Atari is one of the most important brands the gaming industry has ever seen, full-stop. Progenitors of what we would come to know as home console gaming, Atari's ups and downs are the stuff of legend, and indeed, the Atari that exists today isn't remotely the Atari of the past. But that's what makes it so interesting. The reformed, smaller, more nimble Atari is quietly releasing console games again, and gearing up to do even more. To get into the company's plans, its present, its future, and of course its past, I invited Atari's Associate Director of Production, Jason Polansky, to Sacred+. Together, we discuss his current projects, Atari's development pipeline, the various tasks of a producer, the future of console gaming, and so much more. We hope you enjoy.

Another absolutely brilliant and insightful conversation! Cheers Colin and Jason 👍

I personally think the 2600 is trash, but it holds a place in history no doubt. Would make an interesting Knockback episode.

Fun and insightful episode. I particularly liked y'alls' analysis of mobile and "trash" games. While I never owned any of the Atari consoles, I have fond memories of their splash screen whenever I booted up The Witcher 1. Considering CD's prominence now compared to then, Atari made another major contribution to games that perhaps goes under-discussed.

Another fantastic episode Colin. I really like the candid nature in which he spoke, I know his situation's a little bit different than a lot of publishers but it was still very refreshing. I know you've been doing more and more interviews outside of the realm of PlayStation. Maybe just continuing to do that under Sacred symbols make sense to you... But I am willing to bet that I am one of the many patrons who would continue to support if you took away one of these bonus episodes to bring back Fireside Chats proper. You have a skill for conversation, and it doesn't just have to be used for video games. P.S. on the main show that has been very noticeable that you've tried to be more cognizant of interrupting people. Kudos on trying to improve your craft. You are a legit inspiration to me dude. Thanks!

Great episode it's really cool that you give Atari a full podcast. The Atari 2600 was the first console we had in our house. It is good to know the brand is still out there in some form, the Atari brand has a special place in my childhood, and this podcast brought up some memories of living through the great video game crash of 83 seeing game prices plummet made for interesting times.

I personally don't think the last of us 2s sales are indicative of much. The game has a really bad reputation among a lot of normies. Its surprising how many people I personally know talk shit on it or refuse to play it. Many of them were huge fans of the first game. In many ways it has a lot in common with the last Jedi. There is a stink around it that many people act like is just from the internet, but I think the ramifications are broader. Every nerd adjacent person I know has had something bad to say about it. It has its fans for sure (I see them on Reddit), but it's not universally beloved like the first game.

Very happy to do it. It was before my time, but because of my brother, I was still familiar with it. River Raid is a favorite of mine.

Yeah but God of war and spiderman did amazing right? I'm just saying I think the IP got massively damaged by a story a lot of people didn't like. I don't know if it's indicative of overall triple a trends.

Great conversation! Atari was already 'dead' when I started gaming so I have no connection with the brand. After listening to this I'm kinda rooting for them, who doesn't like a come back story? Gonna give Missile Command: Recharged a try.
