Assessing the Scene With Defining Duke | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 218

We heard your pleas: You want more Sacred Symbols x Defining Duke. Well, that can be arranged. In fact, it was! The five of us -- Chris, Dustin, Cog, Matty, and myself (Colin) -- gathered for a nearly-two hour conversation about Xbox, PlayStation, and the current status of our respective scenes. Halo's troubles, a seeming lack-of-excitement about God of War, percolating intrigue about unannounced projects on both sides, the future of subscriptions and games-as-a-service, lessening hardware scarcity, and so much more. We get deep into the weeds, just as we know you enjoy. So please: Do just that.

Was expecting the next crossover to be "SS + DD Play DnD," but I guess my source (Dagan Moriarty) was fed inaccurate information... Fuckin love when the whole crew gets together though!

Guys, I absolutely love these crossover episodes! I’m very happy it seems to be a recurring thing

I love these episodes. There is a fine balance in doing them too often and they lose their luster, but I think you guys are hitting the sweet spot.

More and more embracer group seems like a money laundering scheme…

Cliqued up. That's my games media. Also, GameStop is the worst. I love it when you purchase a "new" game and it gets shipped to you opened.

Posting again just to reiterate that these crossover pods are the absolute best. I’m at the point where I wouldn’t mind losing a SS+ episode a week for one of these to replace it. I just think the dynamic of all 5 of you together really works and the people need it more than once a month! Anyways keep up the great content

Dude Colin nailed my thoughts exactly on Bonnie Ross. There is no way she should keep her job other then the optics. I do believe that they can save Halo as it’s strictly a content issue though. But good on COG to state the fact that these other studios are not a problem. Many of these studios were moved to new buildings, staffed up and given time to completely build up appropriately as they went from indie or AA studios to AAA studios, all while covid was happening. Xbox is giving its new studios time to cook and I believe this narrative will look pretty silly when these games start dropping next year. Xbox fans are slightly subdued to the delays because we know of about 10 or more announced titles coming. Starfield, Redfall and Forza releasing early next year will start what most believe will be a downpour of AAA exclusives.

I had a thought about Factions regarding monetization. What if they release it as a $70 game because they believe in it, but it would be available day and date on PS+ Extra. It could get a lot of people to buy into the new service and that could be the hook for these live service games.

Yeah the whole criticism about how the first wave of acquisitions happened in 2018 and that we are still waiting for those games falls flat to me too. With both Covid and studio restructuring under new management, the studios should take their time. Hell, we are finally getting the God of War 2018 sequel at the end of this year, so it's not been unusually long imo. Yeah I see the Coalition in particular get undeserved flack because of the reputation of 343 and The Initiative. Imo Gears 5 was great, and people dismissed it because it is ultimately just more Gears.

Love this episode and every crossover. Would love to see it random ones like cog and Chris talking about destiny or Matty, Colin and Dustin talking about JRPGS.

Wyvborn

That's what I loved about this episode. While there were some topics that were specific to Xbox or PlayStation, there were also other gaming related topics that didn't involve console talk and it was nice! I hope to see more of these episodes

Love to see you all on podcasts together, thanks for the awesome content

We need a once a month “Defining Symbols”, or whatever you want to call it, where a few from each crew get together and philosophize about JRPGs, shooters, etc. It’s quite amazing to me how a group this large can work without just stepping all over each other on just the second try(?). Especially with Colin interrupting Dustin with just a glance.

What was the fighting BR game that Cog mentions?
