What was supposed to be a routine exchange between corporations and an economic regulatory body in Brazil has turned into the hottest news in gaming over the last week. That's because both Sony and Microsoft have launched soft salvos at each other, picking apart each other's strategies on the market and their intentions to squeeze the other guy out. Buried within both of their arguments are interesting tidbits, though, particularly in regard to how Xbox and PlayStation see both themselves and each other, and we couldn't help but delve in head-first to pick it all apart. Plus: Square Enix is either priming to sell or buy more studios (potentially both), Call of Duty's beta is inbound to Sony platforms in September, PS+'s new offerings are surprisingly solid, and more news. Then: Listener inquiries! Are we tempted to go-in on the Backbone One controller? Can a game be so good that it ruins every other game you play? Is keeping old hardware less important in an era of digital software and backwards compatibility? What lessons has Colin drawn from living to his advanced age?

ah. peace and quiet. a day without a woman. If only lowercases were used Colin... To be sincere though, thanks for the great (and long!) episodes every week!

Red Red Redemption 2 is the game that ruins other games for me. I love how cinematic it is, how the world feels alive, graphics, story... And character movement. It felt really weird playing Horizon Zero Dawn afterwards, because Alloy was moving so fast. Plus there's The Last of Us Part 2. Killing people feels and looks so fucking good in this game. Gameplay in general is top notch.

RDR 2 hit so hard. I don't usually play games multiple times, especially long ones. I've played RDR 2 three times.

I was looking into the backbone, but if you have a steamdeck you can setup ps5 remote play on it with Chiaki instead. I have been using it since we have a newborn and it works great for me but I assume ymmv. It took about 5-10 mins to setup completely.

The closest a game has come to ruining other games for me is the original Mass Effect trilogy back when they came out. I was so immersed in those worlds that other games felt a little lacking in comparison. Never really stopped me playing other games but there was a time where Mass Effect was head and shoulders above everything else I wanted to play.

I wonder if PS will add those classic games that are available ala carte in the Premium tier like Syphon Filter to Steam and Epic. Not sure if there's a market for those games on PC due to the ease of using emulators. Still, doesn't hurt to give those interested a legal way to play. Also, if I remember correctly, I think Colin proposed a Star Wars fighting game by ArkSys before.

Colin, are avid trophy hunters a part of the problem with these shovel ware games? not saying it's all their fault but surely if these people weren't buying these "games" for the sole purpose of getting an easy platinum, there'd surely be less of them being made and therefore a less cluttered store.

Dustin hit the nail on the head. As Colin has pointed out, the issue here is that Microsoft’s only goal with Gamepass is to harm Sony. It is not an interesting or modern business model, it’s a tactic to force Sony to change their behavior. Sony does come off as hypocritical but I see it as a complaint about purchasing the industry in stead of growing the industry. Still, better left unsaid.

I'm not sure why the mainstream games media are now making fun of that Forspoken trailer since that is how most of them genuinely sound 😂

Interesting. Going back to the original ME on PS3 in 2020 for KnockBack, I must say that it holds up well in some ways, and not in others. Still awesome, though.

The Backbone is surprisingly awesome. I played Bloodborne from a hotel in Mexico from my console in LA

I think Sony is becoming a woke hypocritical company, and this is too bad, their number are good but they have changed a lot in the past few years, it will not take long for this to bite them back.
