When PlayStation 4 Pro launched in 2016, it was fairly divisive. Why did we need two iterations of the same console? Isn't it a waste of money? Wouldn't developers have more work to do? It all ended up being needless worry, and so it should come as no surprise that -- if indications are correct -- PlayStation 5 Pro is en route for 2023 or 2024. What's the potential of the machine? Do we even need it? And how will potential consumers respond to a higher-end console when they can't even find the base version? We discuss. This news-thick episode also touches on lots of other issues, from God of War: Ragnarok's release date and Death Stranding 2's seeming leak, to lots of PlayStation Plus drama and new nuggets about PlayStation's PC and acquisitions strategies. Our lengthy podcast ends, as always, with listener inquiries. Why do people insist on scapegoating video games for societal violence? Will Square Enix ever re-package and re-release the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy? Can The Callisto Protocol earn the survival horror crown? Did one listener's car accident bring a deer within striking distance of this very podcast?!

“Every time I hit one…” How many times has Chris hit deer? 😅

Please don't call series of British TV shows "seasons"! 😉

I'll never forget being an elementary school kid watching the news coverage of columbine shooting and instantly laughing my ass off at how dumb they were blaming Doom and saying that game taught these kids how to operate guns and make pipe bombs and all of this outrageous shit that just wasn't true and it baffles me hearing people still spew this crap. Just a few years ago I was with my wife's family and the subject of shootings came up and her uncle said something about violent video games and all I said was numerous studies have proven that to be not true and before I could go further into it he lost his shit on me and said I was wrong and all this shit because it didn't fit into his right wing gun nut narrative that guns can't be to blame and it must be something else

I understand why Chris said that TLOU HBO show is redundant as a core gamer, but if the show is great and manages to get non/casual gamers invested I'd say that's a win. I see it like PS bringing their first party titles to PC, if they won't come to you go to them. Some people will never play video games, so let's bring the great storytelling of PS games to where they are. If these shows & movies are successful then I can see the PS Studios brand becoming a crowd puller like Marvel Studios. Also, I wish I could start a Vita collection but I only have enough money to focus on 1 system so I chose the 3DS.

I remember Columbine vividly, not because it scared me, but because it was everywhere on the news, and you couldn't avoid it. I was in ninth grade, myself.

If only we could go back to those times where a mass shooting was a country stopping event and not another Tuesday.

Chris Dell

As to the GranTurismo TV show, I envision a reality show about going through the GT school, and leading up to I assume a racing sponsorship from a racing team.

Carlos Moreno

LOL! How many time has Chris hit one?

Colin really hit the nail on the head regarding our society and mass shootings. I have long believed that there is a strong link between the internet and the sadness and rage so prevalent in our society. It's no coincidence that Columbine occurred at the moment the internet was becoming ubiquitous in our country. There is something fundamentally wrong with how people have been treating others in the past 20 years. The promise of the internet was to bring us closer together, but I fear the opposite has happened. Today's youths are lonelier than ever. I wish that there were more studies on this trend instead of knee-jerk reactions. I fear how our society will look in another 20 years.

Yeaaaaah! Shout out to Nova Scotia!

Colin/Dustin: I don’t watch the video portion but if your getting light flicker, try adjusting the camera’s shutter if it’s possible, that’s the only way to fix. It’s a matter of synching the camera’s shutter with the recycle rate of the bulb in question. Lastly, “Daguerreotype” is pronounced “de•gara•type”. -your resident director of photography

Indeed. We are fucked, but I think it's a post-evolutionary thing. Like, we're caught in the middle.

I want to bring up something iv'e noticed recently with other countries. Iv'e been living in England for the past two months and it occurred to me just how mundane and boring the BBC news cycle is over here. Compare that to the American news cycle where it's hyper aggressive and vitriolic and i'm starting to wonder if the American media has a big part in this. Even the English people don't seem too confrontational or vitriolic when it comes to politics. In fact i think they spend more time talking about american politics than their own. Just my two cents since iv'e been away from home for a while and I started to notice differences in our culture. When you spend day in and day out bombarded by us Vs them news and rhetoric i wonder what that would do to an unstable mind.

Chris has issues. Imagine not finishing a game because you can’t increase the FOV. Or because it’s 30 frames per second. Or because it’s not an Xbox game.

Glendelman

I can't remember if it was this episode or not but if your webcam has the ability to change shutter speeds, try cranking that up to get rid of that rolling effect on lights. Hopefully your webcam software or whatever you're using to capture video has a way of changing those settings. Generally, that's caused when your frame rate/shutter are out of sync with the refresh rate of lights. You'll have to compensate for the exposure loss but that shouldn't be too hard. Easier than buying new lights or a DSLR.
