We're halfway through George RR Martin's famous HBO fantasy series now, and some would argue that season four is the strongest Game of Thrones gets. That's high praise, of course -- the entire run (save maybe the end) is some of the best television ever produced -- but, whether you're a fan of the books or merely a lowly TV-watcher like we are, there's a whole lot to love. What's perhaps most interesting about this season (at least for us) is how different combinations of characters begin meeting, taking the wide-ranging tale into exciting new directions. As usual, it's hard to talk in too much detail here in the description without spoiling the show, but, uh... you may want to hire a food taster when you're done listening to us heap praise on one of our favorite programs ever. And we'll leave it there.

It’s so funny because while he faints he whispers “my name is Jamie” and then blacks out. Like girl he just told you all this stuff, and he still had to tell you again 😭

Dagan should definitely try stand up. I did it for a few years and it was a lot of fun.

I agree with the hot take that Martin has created a more enjoyable world than Tolkien. I read the LOTR trilogy once, watched the trilogy a couple of times and enjoyed them but never really got more involved. With A Song of Ice and Fire, I've read the main series and offshoot stories multiple times, watched the series besides the last season multiple times, and love getting lost in the lore. We wouldn't have Martin's high fantasy without Tolkien, so I have to give credit to the original. And it feels like Tolkien has written more over the past decade somehow.

I have never read Tolkien and do not know if I ever will. It's not that I do not want to but Martin has stated several times how influential Tolkien has been in his life. I am sure I would love the Rings books but I feel like I got my fill for the fantasy world from Martin. Plus, Martin nails the complexity of his world more than anything I have read, watched or played. Great episode and lets all pour one out for the Red Viper.

Great episode boys. In regards to George and Tolkien, I think there are a lot of people who would agree with y’all myself included. It’s great that George wrote the series as a response to Tolkien imitators from the 70s and 80s. During that time he was retired from writing novels and was mostly a screenwriter, but he felt like people had written such shitty wannabe lord of the rings that he jumped back into writing novels. Originally the series was going to be a nonfiction historical book on The War Of Roses in England but a friend convinced him to make it fiction. A lot of the story as we know it, including the characters, are still heavily inspired by that war. It’s a shame that so many popular YouTubers make videos shitting on George and making it seem like he should have never attempted to “subvert Tolkien” as if that’s what he set out to do.

The Mountain vs. The Viper scene is one that sticks out in my mind in terms of having equal shock value in the show and the book, despite missing the intense visuals in the show. I remember throwing down the book in disgust only to pick it up 30 seconds later because I was so engrossed with where the story was at. Can't wait to one day hear either of your thoughts on how the books compare if you are able to work through them!

Back in the days of duels you couldn't just demand someone took place in one. If you dishonoured someone in public (call them a liar, thief, devient etc), they demand an apology and if you double down they could demand a duel. If you still don't apologise you would then be obliged to duel. But it was never mandatory and as far as I am aware in England and France it was very much frowned upon. So Dagan need not worry about living in Final Fantasy where you would end up in a fight randomly. 😂
