Where is Kratos? Belief that we'd see God of War: Ragnarok by now has left us dismayed, particularly in light of a rather odd video from Santa Monica Studio that gives us little information about a game originally slated to launch in 2021. But without a release date (outside of year) and no confirmation it's even incoming by year's end (except for from a random Tweet from a dev), PlayStation fans are left wondering if their faith in getting something timely from Santa Monica Studio was ill-founded. Other news this week includes the return of Amy Hennig to the Star Wars universe, endless rumors about a new Uncharted game and The Last of Us' remake, the arrival of the NFL on PSVR, the increasing perils of in-game advertising, and more. We wrap up with listener questions galore, as usual, including inquiries on what Netflix's fall in fortune means for gaming subscription services, circumventing old-school punishment with save states, the bad design around level caps, and so much more. Would we do it with an alien? We talk about that, too. Enjoy!

My comment on having real Ads in games. As a FIFA player, This game has had real sponsor ad boards for several years. In fact, PlayStation is an official sponsor of the UEFA Champions league & as official sponsor of the tournament PlayStation ads appear even in the Xbox & Nintendo Switch versions of the game.

Yes, but that's not what they're really talking about. They're talking about a truly dynamic, private ad market.

If they can put micro transactions in a 70 dollar game I've no doubt they'd find a way to put ads in a full priced game. They could start with the next Gran Turismo or The Show, which in the context of those games I'd think most gamers would deem reasonable. Btw I could've sworn Square Enix and most Japanese companies learnt that "don't force your Japanese devs to make a western style game" lesson in the PS3/Xbox 360 era.

Wow, those comments on his tweet about this lol. I’m not surprised, but it’s pretty wild.

Got a little confused on Chris's point about Naughty Dog being subject to remaking Uncharted games to have those native on the PS4 store when they already are native via Bluepoint's trilogy compilation. Regardless I do agree with the sentiment that keeping Naughty Dog in the silo of Last of Us/Uncharted for the foreseeable future doesn't sound exciting from a fan's perspective. I'd personally love to see what they could do with a mature, story driven FPS with a 15ish hour campaign as those type of games seem to be fewer and far between these days. I do wonder if Sony's reliance on their self-limited pool of established IP, no matter how good said IP is, starts to bite them in the ass if Microsoft is able to get their stable of devs cooking with variety abound. One great sequel may be better than 5 mediocre original titles, but if the latter quality gets bumped up to "very good", I'd argue the scale starts to tip the other way.

Not a correction per se but I opened the God of War Ragnarok page on PS App on mobile and it does say it will be available 2022 so they definitely have an internal goal of releasing this year

DB Cooper

David Ellison (Skydance) following his sister again - Megan Ellison running Annapurna. Maybe he can crack games too 🤔

Dustin, I can’t believe that you’re from western PA and have no idea what Ope! means. For those curious is kind of just a midwestern expression that can be used in many different contexts

Fair enough, appreciate the reply! Hopefully we do see it this year!

Thinking about the question of what Bungie should do, I wonder if successful live service games will “jump the shark”. This is a term describing doing something gimmicky on a T.V. show to engage viewers after a loss of interest. I would argue that Warzone “jumped the shark” with the release of Rambo and John McClain. If not then, they certainly have now with Godzilla and Kong. Fortnite started as a shark jump in my opinion, and I would bet this will become a normal occurrence in future live service games. The ways it could manifest are endless. Keep on rolling guys. I hope you are all media moguls one day that have your hands in every facet of entertainment.

I'm sure someone could find it in the way back machine, but I don't have the time, so I'll just reference it. When The Mandalorian was killing it on release, I remember seeing Cory Barlog telling twitter how perplexed he was that no one was making a game based on that IP. He even took a few moments to spell out the upgrade path, starting with garbage and working your way around the galaxy to get better armor, ending at Beskar. Amy Hennig responded to him, citing some notes in Project RagTag. So after hearing this conversation around what Amy is going to do at Skydance, I wonder if she's going to take a lot of those bones from RagTag, and use them to create a new Mandalorian game.

Just going to drop this here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_Planet_Cuties

Shit. Wasn't Amy's ragtag. Was Star Wars 1313. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-wars-1313-dev-reflects-on-its-cancellation-in-wake-of-the-mandalorians-popularity/1100-6485254/
