Mark Darrah on BioWare, Dragon Age 4, & EA's Impact | Defining Duke Ultimate Episode 57

Mark Darrah spent over 20 years with BioWare and has overseen its many incredible RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Knights Of The Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and most notably on his portfolio, Dragon Age. He was also present during the pre-EA era and experienced much of the changes within the company after BioWare had been purchased by them in 2007. Today, he joins the show for a sobering conversation on the status of this once beloved gaming titan after speaking out in a recent YouTube video of his on "BioWare Magic" in which he holds the developer accountable for their bad processes. The conversation goes into deep waters no other outlet has reached yet, so we do hope you enjoy our biggest interview yet.

Fantastic episode. I still don't think Matty is a big of a BioWare fan as he claims/thinks he is (I think he just loves KOTOR, 😁), but I enjoyed this interview a ton. Great job, fellas!

These dev interview episodes are so interesting, great work guys 👏

Stephen Richard

Easily my favorite DDU episode, dukes brought in the legend.

You guys are awesome, thank you for the great interview!! BioWare is one of my most favored developers as well, and hearing such a candid interview with enlightening answers was much appreciated! Keep up the great work :)

Loved this interview. What he describes at the end of a smaller core team building the main component of a game and then having a bigger team help to complete the development and the surrounding aspects. It sounds a lot like what the gameplan is with the Initiative.

Why do people feel the need to constantly question someone's fandom? He loves both kotors, dragon age origins and jade empire. He likes mass effect 1,2,3 and dragon age 2. Thats enough to call yourself a big fan. Hell, if your favourite game is a game made by a studio, you are automatically a big fan of that studio. Whats with the gatekeeping?

Joseph La Russa

I don't know what gatekeeping you're talking about, no one is telling him he can't or shouldn't play the games, so I think your use of that term is confusing and inaccurate. I said what I said because his criticism of the studio's games doesn't line up with the community's general consensus. Fans of studios/products overlook things that others don't by the very nature of being a fan, and I feel as though Matty's comments are extremely nitpicky most of the time. And that's fine, I enjoy the content and he has every right to say his opinions, but in my opinion, he doesn't come across as a BioWare fan. Bethesda? Yes. FromSoftware? Yep. Xbox? You bet. But BioWare? Nope, not to me. If you disagree, that's fine, but to my mind, that's how it sounds.

Couple of minutes in and already very interesting.
