Sixteen Candles | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 211

We love John Hughes here on KnockBack. The (sadly deceased) American filmmaker and writer is perhaps best-known for his work on the likes of Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, and Home Alone. But before he got to any of those films -- and the rest of his legion of '80s masterpieces -- he undertook Sixteen Candles, which also happens to be his directorial debut after a series of writing gigs, including with National Lampoons. Starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall, two staples of his actor stable, Sixteen Candles is a surreal, funny, and emotional movie about a 16-year old girl whose family forgets her big day... and all that happens thereafter. However, there's a lot of weird stuff in this film, too: Implied sexual assault, casual racism, and more. All told, just where does Sixteen Candles fit in the Hughes Pantheon? Good and bad alike: Let's discuss. A new episode of KnockBack launches each Monday morning. I gotta say, no idea why, but I love listening to the updates and stories/anecdotes on your guys’ lives in the beginning. 25 minutes of gold. I know the pool situation must be absolutely frustrating for you, Colin, but the saga and the way you describe it and your reactions are hilarious content. And then with Dagan’s whole bit of new, mildly annoying, if-y human interactions every week—it’s like a Seinfeld episode. 😂 Please don’t worry about going too long in the intro

Colin, I am glad someone else shares my general sentiment with Long Duck Dong and thanks for taking my question!

What I still cannot believe this movie is PG. Overt sexuality and nudity. Pg-13 did not exist so it should be R rated at this time.

Dagan seemed a little vague on who was wearing a mask in that story. Is it possible she was being douche coz he wasn't wearing a mask?

I ended up watching this movie really drunk and really high after watching this episode and enjoyed it a lot. I saw some parts of it when I was a young child as I can remember certain parts of the movie, but It was nice to enjoy it with my 45 year old brain. :D

All I remember of Sixteen Candles is the boobs scene from the showers. Not for obvious reasons.. but actually due to the fact that one of our church leaders thought it would be a fun movie to throw on the coach bus when our youth group went on a ministry trip. I’ve never seen an adult jump out of their seat so fast, his head hit the ceiling of the bus and arms were flailing to “TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF!!” 😂😂
