In A Galaxy Run Far, Far Into the Ground | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 187

Disney couldn't care less whether or not you want more Star Wars, because you are, nevertheless, getting more. In our realm, three new Star Wars games have been revealed -- one we kinda knew about, two we certainly didn't -- but what makes things interesting is that they're all coming from the same source: EA-owned Respawn, the team behind Titanfall and Apex Legends. What's with this massive investment into Star Wars? Do we really, honest-to-god need more of this series? We discuss. Plus: Horizon 2 is gold, as is Elden Ring, Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation through at least 2023, PlayStation Plus' February offerings leave much to be desired, Sony invests even more into first and second party teams, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it the right time to revive MotorStorm? Will Spartacus ultimately disappoint us? How do analysts draw their sales conclusions? Will you join us in Richmond, Virginia for Episode 200 live?! Follow the hosts on Twitter! Colin: https://twitter.com/notaxation Chris: https://twitter.com/ChrisRGun Dustin: https://twitter.com/DustinCanFly A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. Ha ha ha awesome title, Colin!

Frank G.

I almost thought this was Colin or someone replying to a comment I made earlier this week. 😂 I do talk a lot of shit but I'm just playing I love shinji I mean Dustin. However it's official Star Wars is run to the ground already, its unavoidable! Book of Boba Fett is a rip off of the Mandalorians formula and they don't let shit rest or marinade. Honestly a reboot of the whole thing sounds more refreshing not everything needs to be tied to the original 3 and the prequels.🤔 We'll always have Rogue One.

Roger

Is that a fucking NINTENDO WII in Chris’ background?

Zack Fair

Colin can you confirm if Hasan Kahraman Is coming on to do a podcast on sacred symbols as he said one was incoming on twitter

Ryan Hayman

Chris - although watching Fight Club blind is an experience in itself, I would suggest watching it even knowing what is going to happen. I find it one of those movies that is better the second time.

Rage.Quit_Richard

Colin, Just wondering…Is Jeff Ross still gonna be on sacred plus? I’ve been looking forward to that one. I love papa jaffe but let’s call his interviews “unfocused” and I’m sure there’s still meat left on the bone there.

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Respawn is so damn good, I trust them with Star Wars or whatever else. But, what I really want. The one thing in life that I yearn for every day with every fibre of my being, is Titanfall 3. Come on, guys! Wtf?

LastStandMedia

Yes. The episode was recorded a couple of weeks ago. I don't want to publish it when there's so much other industry shit going on. I think we'll put it live Tuesday.

Joe B

Colin, why do you think the PS4 Pro and standard sales should count as 1 and series x & s should be seperate? IMO series consoles launched together and their sales are to people at the same time with the option for both to choose from. Sony sold the pro after they sold 70 million standard PS4's and double dipped with improvements. Seems like PS4 sales are the more questionable of the two.

Michael Miller

You guys aren’t supposed to talk about Fight Club…

Owen

Been a Star Wars fan for over 30 years. Not once have I ever been like “I want less of this universe.” But I understand other people getting fatigue

Erik Roth

Sony removed the screenshot/video auto upload option the morning of Jan 26. It still has not yet been readded

LastStandMedia

The PS4 Pro came after the base PS4, and is an enhanced version of it. It's iterative. And I'm not entirely sure Sony sold a whole lot of them. Seems to be there's a much bigger difference between the two consoles, which came out at the same time. But that's my opinion.

I've honestly been loving all the Star Wars stuff. The movies are never allowed to go this deep with a lot of the lore or more out there aspects of the force like the witches of Dathomir so I'm all for it.

Josh Paradysz

The Crunchy Roll included in Spartacus is interesting, game pass is actually giving away 75 days of crunchy roll premium right now as a perk

Sean Hatfield

The conversation about recycled animations is hilarious because it's so ridiculous. Not only does it make sense for developers to reuse complex animations, but it also makes sense for a character to repeat a motion for a repeated activity. I'm a drummer, so I'll use drumming as an example. I've found a technique that works for me and I have my drums set up to obtain optimal speed and movement around the kit. I'm not going to move my drums around or change my technique for every song. That would be inefficient and just plain stupid. Aloy has found the optimal way to jump off a cliff and throw a grappling hook and Kratos has found the best way to get a boat in the water, so that's what they do out of habit. It's practical from a development and character perspective in my opinion.

George Hall

After the years of wasted potential with EA having exclusive rights to Star Wars and doing nothing creative with it - I don’t mind the announcements. I do want Titanfall 3 though.

Just a thought on the last topic - how will game pass be profitable. I'll start by saying I agree that it will be a long time before it is profitable and the rising cost of game production will only make that worse. However, keep in mind that every subscriber is also paying for the games they would never normally buy. So, if Microsoft would normally release a $60 game and sell let's say 3-4 million, then they would arguably be making just as much if not more when they have 25+ million paying $10-15 per month instead. Like I said I think they're a long way off from being profitable, but just wanted to offer those two cents. As always, love the show!

Hey guys, I wanted to chime in on the “profitability of GamePass”. I hear you all talk about Microsoft buying Activision and obtaining their IP. I haven’t heard you mention that they also will own all of the internal microtransaction data from Call of Duty. I would argue that this is more valuable than Call of Duty, itself. When we talk about tv and music subscriptions, we have one monthly price. They don’t have much else to monetize. You watch the show, or listen to the album and move on. When we talk about gaming subscriptions, we should also consider that gaming has the ability to be monetized further than the game purchase alone. Free to play games are becoming more common, and recoup their costs through battle passes, cosmetics, boosts, etc. Microsoft knowing how Call of Duty has successfully monetized its games is an insane value. I suspect we will see more games with similar mtx systems to CoD in place to gain Microsoft more money than just subscription price, alone. Great conversation! Keep up the amazing work!

Dan Parsons

Why should Disney care if a specific person wants more Star Wars? Many people do and if you are not one them, simply don’t watch/play/read it.

Anonymous

Killzone and Resistance never had the super satisfying gunplay that CoD/Destiny/Halo have. They were great campaigns but it's unsurprising they never got to the same level as the other shooters in the space

Walker Simmons

I never understood Colin's love for rogue one the action and visuals were great but the characters were forgettable and bland

Fourth dimentional hypercube

I feel like I’m one of the few people pretty happy with the February PS+ selection simply because I don’t actually own any of them. Won’t touch the borderlands stuff but I’m really looking forward to diving in to planet coaster.

To make the 70B$ back from the ABK purchase with gamepass would require ~115M subscribers over a 5 year period (assuming 10$ pm profit per subscriber). It’s astronomical… but maybe they are comparing to Netflix’s 220M…

NotSkyWalker

I feel like something often lost in these gamepass vs. Netflix conversations is well... unlike Netflix, Microsoft still runs a game store. With "only" 20 million gamepass subscribers, we have to keep in mind that, broadly speaking, there is a huge subset of folks who still just buy games in-store or from the Microsoft store. Gamepass isn't the only source of Xbox profit. Microtransactions, games themselves, DLC, and movies/shows even can all be purchased from the store... and I think there is a significant number of people still engaging with it (like Micah, as mentioned in the episode) without even touching gamepass. Then of-course being a gamepass subscriber doesn't exclude you from buying games either. Maybe it'll all go up in flames one day and Xbox will implode from some self-induced bankruptcy, but tbh I think the higher-ups probably have a better idea about what they're doing than we give them credit for..

Piston Pants

I love that Chris has a Wii and what seems to be a cassette of Michael Jackson's Bad on his entertainment center.

Kenneth Oms

Hey brotha, finally finished the whole episode while shoveling snow, hope you and the fam are staying warm down in VA, I hope one day you do a knockback plus episode with Dag and ya'll discuss the present and future of the Star Wars franchise, so that you can get all of your thoughts out there. I'm looking forward to the new games and new stories in the universe, but like you I want quality stories and not quantity. I wish they had the balls to do a smuggler story and we can finally explore the cartels and the Black Sun gang

Anonymous

Dude I was seriously like screaming this. If you have high number of subscribers paying $15 a month your getting sells from a lot more people every month. If they get to a number like 60 million that’s exposing 3x more players to these games than the most selling 1st party game on Sony God of War.

looper

I'm so glad you gave a shout out to the Solo movie for Star Wars. Severely underrated! Incredible story and the cast meshed so well together. It is definitely up there with Rogue One.

Ryan

I really like solo. The bland characters and weird boring tone kill rogue one for me

LastStandMedia

Right, but doesn't this alone create the biggest argument against subscriptions, full-stop? I pay a subscription for Spotify; it doesn't ask me for any more to get the very best out of it. We're going to pay for Spartacus to get access to games we're going to have to pay for again, in some way? It's not gonna sit right with folks. Doesn't sit right with me.

Just wanted to throw in a quick correction related to the trophy discussion for Uncharted. The reason it's notable because it's never been done for a game before*. Even GOTY editions with DLC (which Colin mentioned) do not require all of the DLC trophies for the plat. One game previously did try to require DLC for the platinum (Life is Strange: Before the Storm) and then patched the game to reverse the decision (story from PushSquare: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/08/life_is_strange_before_the_storms_platinum_trophy_requires_the_deluxe_edition_updated) I believe it was originally Sony policy that platinums couldn't require DLC packs, but they may have given Uncharted a pass since it's a "bundle". Or, more likely in my opinion, it's just another symptom of them lowering standards and caring less about the intricacies of the trophy ecosystem. I have no "insider" documentation one way or another so it's all ultimately speculation, though. * It's worth noting that there are some games that have been updated since their launch to make the platinums either impossible or nearly-impossible - The Hungry Horde and Destiny 1 come to mind. Sorry for the short novel and being the "ACTUALLY" guy, just wanted to chime in on one of the few occasions my niche knowledge has offered further context. Hope you're all well!

Greg Dawson

1. Why is it "@:@" and "AT-ST". Surely its "AT-AT" so the names are consistent? 2. When talking about new games in the SW universe, why do anything that happens in the movies? There's infinite cool stories to be crafted in the history/future of the Jedi/Sith & the underworld and never even mention Skywalker or any other familiar name. Let the movies rest, there's too much nostalgia for eps.4,5,6. They're the proverbial dead horse - so much so because the other 6 movies aren't great and all of the other fiction has been binned.

BlindRiot

This show has become grim dark…PlayStation will be fine, as it’s always been, just fine. It’s good enough. Not everything has to be great. Spartacus will be ok, and that’s just going to have to be good enough.

Dion Collier

Holy shit that last part with the southern accent. I must have replayed that about 7 or 8 times hahahah 😂 Let's get a segment where you use that accent lol

Andrew Gambill

I agree with the criticisms of what Disney has done to Star Wars, but I feel like the games are the one bright spot in Star Wars and games as a medium don't need to be married to the IP in the same way as tv and movies because it's more interactive than passive.

OCEL0T

I agree, I usually enjoy the snarky jokey depression stuff but that has shifted from being fun to seemingly being down on many topics throughout the show. Not saying we need fake optimism but I think the industry is in a fun place with a lot of games being made that appeal to a lot of people. Yeah Tencent is scary, consolidation is scary, Bobby Kotick sucks, but games are fun. Lets talk about them like they are. Hopefully with potential bangers like Horizon, Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, Witch Queen, Sifu, etc. we can get back to talking about awesome games.

Greg Dawson

For the inevitable "Sony only bought Bungie as a reaction to Microsoft / ActiBliz". Didn't Mr Hoag tell us that by the time it hits the news, conversations between the two companies have been going on for months?

LastStandMedia

We used to say "chicken walker" for the AT-ST, though I honestly have no idea where that came from.

LastStandMedia

Yes. We know this, also, because Sony told sources post-deal that it's been about six months.

Greg Dawson

That's sound. Seems the twitterverse has run away with the story that it's reactionary to ActiBliz. That will slowly change once the six month news travels. Not seen anything that indicates that Sony or anyone else knew about ActiBliz so it seems this was gonna happen regardless.

I just relistened to make sure I wasn't making a fool of myself. The inquiry you read did ask if it was the first game to require DLC for a plat and the response was "Basically DLC lists only are required to get a platinum trophy if it's typically like a game of the year edition or something and they're all baked in and/or redone so that they share one list(...)" But to my knowledge even those GOTY editions/re-releases continue to segregate DLC lists and don't count toward the platinum - Shadow of Mordor, The Witcher 3, and PS4/PS5 re-releases like the BioShock games, Alan Wake, Goat Simulator, The Binding of Isaac, Spider-Man, and Borderlands all follow this trend. I feel like I have heard of trophies being moved from DLC lists to the main list (which would then count toward the platinum, and is what you seem to be alluding to after a relisten) but I couldn't find any examples from a few quick searches. Maybe just a slip of the tongue, or maybe some list(s) I've overlooked?

Y’all see the interview that came out with the author of Fight Club we’re he said that while he doesn’t agree with censorship, but he found it amusing that the Chinese ended up almost doing the books ending. *spoiler* The crew is caught by the cops. Tyler shoots him self in the head and ends up in a coma, and wakes up yeas later in the mental/ medical hospital.

Tyler Cumerford

A third person knights of ren party swapping game would be dope.

Kaz Redclaw

Resistance 3: Yeah, I bought that and played it when it was released. It's on my list of the best games released in the last decade and a half. It should have gotten way more users. Killzone Shadow Fall: This was actually my first Killzone game, I went back to 2 and 3 after I played it. It wasn't my favorite game, but it was solid. I also played the Resistance on Vita and got the platinum, but it's definitely the worst game in that series. I've largely given up hope on a PSVita 2 or PSP 3. Most of the good games on Vita were third party anyway, so might as well play on Steam deck and Switch Lite instead.

Kaz Redclaw

(That said, I like Horizon so much better than Kill Zone that it's probably best if they keep their main team on that.)

flytroop

Killzone: Shadowfall was a great game
