Halo (Combat Evolved) | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 207

There's just no denying it: The gaming series Halo and the Xbox console are intrinsically linked, and will be forever. Indeed, Microsoft went and bought Halo mid-development to become its maiden console's killer app, and... well... it worked... because Xbox was unlikely to survive without it. Two decades-plus later, Halo remains one of the most important console franchises in the world, and yet, it all began innocuously enough with a 2001 product subtitled Combat Evolved. While far from the first FPS on console, there's no doubt that Halo -- through control, story, LAN, and more -- set the precedent for the next more-than 20 years of console-based shooting, which, as we well know, is now big, big business. We may just have the esteemed Halo to thank for that, and so, we welcome a conversation all about it here on KnockBack. A new episode of KnockBack launches each Monday morning. One of the best games ever made

Caleb Greer

Great discussion. I thought you guys nailed it

Great episode. Happy that you two enjoyed it warts and all. My brother and I played this game co-op from start to finish when it came out, we even got as far as beating the game together on legendary. We got into a lot of fights over the warthog run at the end.

Great episode! Appreciate the content!

I feel like the co-op campaign is a fundamental part of Halo. The guys should have took an hour or two to play together.

Great discussion. I played this game for the first time this year on Series S. Really impressed with how it ran on modern hardware even though I preferred Halo 2.

First time watching knockback. Your brother is pretty talented as well.

I really enjoy listening to you two. Happy to have called Colin's MoH question immediately. I played Halo CE on PC after it launched on Xbox, and it felt so refined and perfected like classic Doom. Previous games like Goldeneye and MoH had control limitations and part you knew it but didn't at the same time, until you played Halo. Not the most experienced with the series, but Halo 1 and 2 were a big part of my teenage years.

Good discussion, Moriarty men. I enjoy Halo CE and I admire its depth at the time. But it was actually Halo 2 that introduced me to Xbox, which I played first, and I like that game way better too. I think Halo CE Anniversary did a lot to polish the game visually, and make it easier to know where to go. I too think the final level is a bad joke tbh, and I hate how it felt to play. I believe the final level of Halo 3 is a way better version of that; granted that Halo 3 is a legendary game overall.

Goldeneye was awesome, but Medal of Honor, for whatever reason, was a game-changer for me. Possibly due to its subject matter, too, which was also virtually never-before-seen on console (and rarely on PC) at that point... which is absolutely insane to think about 23 or 24 years later.

Great episode! Halo is my favorite game series ever. And this game is fantastic. Very happy to hear you both enjoyed it so much! It's really strange to hear Colin talk so much positive about Halo and Xbox, but feels very nice! I think this is the first time I've heard somebody say Master chief isn't cool, wow that was shocking. Also, I think you get more of the story in the game than you guys think. Maybe you missed some stuff or didn't pay attention. But certainly Halo 2 really dives into the story way more, and you learn alot more about the different factions and characters. Very excited to hear the Halo 2 episode hopefully in the not too distant future.

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Yes, you absolutely do! I guess the difference is here you're talking about your experience of playing an Xbox game, which we don't get to hear very often! And it was really enjoyable! 😀

This is so beautiful Colin. My brother is 9 years older than me and I remember when we both were playing Medal Of Honor. We had daily conversations about it and I still remember my brother in his over the top German accent saying “The American has dog biscuits in his pocket!”

God bless Dagan(sorry if spelled wrong). He’s a treasure and so was this episode as a whole.
