There's just no denying it: The gaming series Halo and the Xbox console are intrinsically linked, and will be forever. Indeed, Microsoft went and bought Halo mid-development to become its maiden console's killer app, and... well... it worked... because Xbox was unlikely to survive without it. Two decades-plus later, Halo remains one of the most important console franchises in the world, and yet, it all began innocuously enough with a 2001 product subtitled Combat Evolved. While far from the first FPS on console, there's no doubt that Halo -- through control, story, LAN, and more -- set the precedent for the next more-than 20 years of console-based shooting, which, as we well know, is now big, big business. We may just have the esteemed Halo to thank for that, and so, we welcome a conversation all about it here on KnockBack.

Fucccccck I've been waiting for this. Can't wait to listen later!!

Ben Scott

… and just like that, you made this county caseworker’s stressful Monday a little less stressful. Thank you!

Robert Graham

Gotta zip tie the charger to the nightstand or other cables at the nightstand (lamp or whatever).

Jack Doheny

This shall be a good one

Domenico Smarto

Really looking forward to this one of my favorite gaming memories was stepping out onto the Halo ring for the first time.

Jeremy Seal

Dagan, I feel the charger pain. We all use USB-C chargers, and they all get gone. My wife just ordered an 8 pack of chargers. Side bar, I switched to android, and I'll never go back. I run emulators, and lot of other open-source programs. And, I can download any ringtone or alert tone for free.

stepping out of the drop-ship onto halo for the first time is a capital-m Moment. it feels so welcoming but alien at the same time. i always take my time to scan the horizon of the ring, bungie did such a great job conveying scale with that skybox. also, WORT WORT WORT

Kinda crazy to hear the fun factor still holds up on a game like this. Dagan, you need to get your affairs in order. Stealing chargers in this day and age is a good enough reason to declare war. Time to take a true head count of your household and sentence those committing these egregious war crimes. We better hear about a healthly 89% instead of a dire 16% on the next knockback.

Great conversation, thanks for reading my question. I am hopeful other companies can follow Microsoft’s example in preservation of their legacy titles

Man, I love this series so much. It’s what made me an Xbox fan in the first place. Great and fair conversation as well. One thing I’ll point out that may help you with vehicles in the future (should you do more for the show). It’s just like being on foot. Left stick = forward, back, and strafe. Right stick = turning. You just can’t strafe in a warthog or scorpion (but you can in the other vehicles). It’s still this way even in halo infinite.

Kenneth Oms

I told Dagan on Twitter that he needs to start charging people for these charging cables. Now that the super chargers are standard for all new iPhones going forward shit is mad expensive. He needs to go full gollum and protect the precious

Carlos

Great episode truly. I feel like a lot of the critical points you guys brought up were rectified in Halo 2 so I can’t wait for you guys to play that as well someday!

NeO JD

Next show? As in a new show? Did I hear that right? 👀

Al Rodriguez

For the Warthog, I think the idea was to mimick the controller when you're on foot to provide a more immersive experience - instead of toggling between two different controller schemes and thus taking you out of the game. Also, the Warthog controls has a cult following. Lol. I agree with Dagan, the problem with the Warthog is speed.

LastStandMedia

It's very interesting, and -- as I said -- a solution to a problem many were tackling simultaneously. So it's fun to see what they came up with.

Colin I think it’s worth it for you to get to Halo 2 some time down the line. I think you would enjoy where the story goes, particularly in regards to the Covenant.

Corey Adams

Nothing substantive to add other than… man do I love me some KnockBack

Another great knockback episode, one I was very much looking forward to hearing due to the topic. With regards to the warthog controls, and it is highly possible I am remembering this incorrectly, but was it not the same system in both Far Cry 3 and 4?

Taylor kazemba

Did u guys not play co op?

Taylor kazemba

The warthog controls are the same in the borderlands games for the Vehicles in those games.
