The Man Who Always Gamed | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 150

William Holbert is a 74-year-old retired San Antonio police officer, married for 52 years (!), with a daughter, a couple of grandkids, and even a great grandchild. He's also been playing video games habitually since 1972. Students of the industry will know '72 is significant, and is widely-considered The Beginning of Video Games As We Know Them, as that's the year Pong launched (and it was indeed Pong that caught Billy's attention). Since then, he's seen, owned, and played it all: From the earliest arcade games and crudest consoles to hobbyist computers, IBM-compatible PCs, and consoles galore. The earliest electronics and games shops? He bought things there. The first magazines and newsletters? He subscribed to them. The cassette tapes we'd listen to music on in the '80s? He'd store data on them. Fast-forward all of this time, and these days, he and his 22-year-old grandson still play. He loves Skyrim. He loves the Witcher. He thinks Game Pass is amazing, and marvels at how his back-catalog is made better by Series X. He's currently stuck in Guardians of the Galaxy. He's a treasure, really. So let's pick his brain. He's William Holbert, and I really, really think you're gonna love hearing from him. I got some snacks and a pizza, and was planning a chill movie night. scrolling a little netflix before ending up watching this instead, mutch better use of my time :D

TheSilverLabGuy

Yep, I had a smile on my face for the duration of this podcast. Lovely gentleman, great talk. LSM is so precious to me! With this kind of content, I'm honestly thrilled for what's next. So glad we're gonna welcome him back, I want to hear more! - And a little message for him : No worry about what console he likes, we just all love gaming! So much so that we listen and discuss it for hours!

Rage.Quit_Richard

I was really close with my grandfather before he passed when I was 22. Teared up a little when he talked about gaming with his grandson. That’s incredible. Really nice ep especially during Xmas.

Anonymous

Hire him

brody_low

One of the best episodes of the year! Bring him back! Would love to hear more

Edwin Garcia

I had a smile on my face the whole podcast

Andrew

Oh man, listened to this and I'm not exaggerating but I had tears in my eyes listening to this and I can't explain why. Amazing Colin. I hope you can pass on a message to William that we loved this conversation/podcast.

Kickstand

This is awesome! I know you guys might already plan this, but could you make this conversation public facing? My dad is 62 and has made comments about having an interest in gaming as he transitions to retirement. I remember us playing Super Mario All Stars on SNES, and am curious if this conversation would grab him. I think it is inspiring to hear how games can help people find meaning and contentment as Bill so eloquently put it. Just want to say San Antonio is a great city, if not the best in Texas! I lived down the street in Houston for many years. Thanks for your service and I hope you find enjoyment in games for many years to come.

Marc L

This brought me so much joy, definitely one of my favorite eps. The SS+ episodes this year in general were incredible. I really can't wait to hear more from William!

InsufficientWzrD

If only my grandpa was half as cool as you, what a great episode. I look forward to hearing more!

Lord Zedd

This was a great interview Colin. You guys continue to kill it with content and topics that no one else would think of or even want to do.

Derek Alcott

This makes me feel good to hear the honest truth and positivity from William. I look forward to the Q&A. It was great to hear about how he is not good at Souls games. This hit home too for my father is in his 60s and still plays Fallout on the Series X. Never too old to game.

TL

I recognize that face, ready to listen to this for sure. Always cool in the groups I interacted with him in.

BettyAnn Moriarty

Fantastic episode! What a wonderful guy… I can’t wait to hear more, and more… from the two of you! 👏🏻💕

Anonymous

You should hire him or collaborate. He needs is own show/podcast on LSM :)

Anonymous

Oh amazing! Cannot wait to get into this!!!

Johnny Shoulder

What a great, feel good episode! Can't wait for when he is next on. My dad is 73 and has been gaming since he was in his forties. He got made redundant so was the first time he wasn't working full time in his adult life. He was struggling a bit, so I thought giving him my old PS1 would help him. And it worked, and he has playing ever since! He finds it the best way as a form of escapism.

Bob Spiers

This was great. Somehow stumbled on you interviewing Green Day earlier today……. Quite the range!

NJ

Hi Colin, thanks to you and the Last Stand crew for making this happen, this is one of this best pieces of content I’ve seen from you and I’m glad that it’s out there in the world! (I presume that this will become free to all at some point.) Thanks also to Mr Holbert, of course! It was wonderful to hear him talk of his love for technology and gaming, but also to hear his general philosophy in life. I think the world would definitely benefit if the more toxic elements in all walks of life took a page (or ten) from his proverbial book. Great show - I’m looking forward to the next instalment!

Jeremy Shook

What a great episode! I could listen to Mr Holbert stories for another hour.

Best Sacred Symbols + episode ever.

Frederick Corbin

Really fun episode. I can see a lot people my age as they grow older having the same love for video games just like him.

William Holbert

Thank you all for all your Kind and uplifting comments.

Jeff

This was wonderful. I, like Colin, have been gaming my whole life, but that started right with the NES. My parents were all about the arcade and pinball, and had a PONG console at home, too, but they were hot and cold on gaming. Love hearing the stories and reminiscence. Thanks William, and thanks Colin & LSM team!

Anonymous

Made my day, thanks Colin and Bill for a great episode!

Anonymous

This is absolutely incredible

Travis Stockton

This man is a legend. I hope to still have the same passion for video games at his age. Very fun listen.

Anonymous

Thank you Colin for bringing people like William to our attention

Caleb Greer

Few things: 1.) Colin, I’ve never seen you smile that much during an episode of anything. 2.) This was just the most wonderful piece of content related to gaming ever produced. 3.) This man also found and acquired a Series X, so I don’t want to hear “I can’t find one”

Caleb Greer

Fantastic episode, truly. You’re the cool grandpa all us younger listeners wanted so badly!

Kaleb

I was pretty bummed with how short the podcast was as I was getting towards the end so it was great to hear you invite him back so soon. Great way to end SS+ for the year.

Lucas Gremista

What a great conversation with the coolest grandpa around!

Anonymous

Colin this was a wonderful show! I am excited to watch the follow up show.

Anonymous

I was smiling basically throughout the whole episode, can't wait for the follow up!

Brian Walsh

Great episode; i only wish it were longer. Was very happy to hear he will be back for a more in depth discussion + commentsquestionsconcernsthoughtandideas

Samuel Mills

This was a great show. Made me smile several times while listening. Hope to still be gaming like this guy in 30-40 years.

omar del rosario

thanks colin!! for introducing us to our future selves....

Cam McCabe

This was a great conversation to listen to

Casey Powning

That man needs his own show. What a breath of fresh air.

Jake H.

William’s eyes don’t deceive him! Dragon Age: Inquisition got a 60 FPS patch on Series X, and I remember on Xbox One that game dropped below 30 FPS on the regular, so no doubt it’s a more fluid experience now. Can’t wait for another episode with him.

Ambitious Casual

This podcast literally gave me happiness. Colin, these variety of Podcast hosts and topics is amazing. Thank you

James

this is honestly the best episode so far, what an amazing guy and amazing interview, so wholesome and so genuine. 😊😊😊

Rob Aitken

What a genuine man and a fantastic listen. My heart skipped a beat when he talked about Wing Commander. Great idea to have him back Colin, looking forward to it!!

OTTAPPS

Easily my favourite episode. Genuinely had a smile throughout the entire thing. What a wholesome episode 👏

Chris Morton

This is easily one of the best episodes of SS+. Hope we get to hear more from him.

Anonymous

This was so wonderful - Thank you for this!

Miracle Peach

Damn, Colin, you continue to crush it. This episode was a joy to listen to. Also unique, as I’ve never had the opportunity to listen to someone in their 70’s speak about games on this level. William is such a positive, joyful individual, and it was a pleasure and super interesting to hear him speak about games and his many years of experience playing them. What a great episode. You’re the man, Colin. Continue to love what you’re doing.

Awesome episode! Bill is the absolute coolest dude!

Stuart Johnstone

Outstanding episode. I say get rid of Dustin and bring in Bill lol. Keep up the great work guys and have a great New Year. 🤘🤘

Eebo85

I just had to stop what I was doing to comment. I got misty eyes listening to this episode, I think in part because the relationship with his grandson is something I wish I could have had myself growing up. But also, the absolute charm of this gentlemen is something so rare these days. Thank you so much Colin and LSM, this has been one of my favorites to listen to. Oh, and the fact that he loves Witcher 3 just seals the deal!!

Dylan Michael

I never comment but I had to here, this episode was beautiful and made my week. It’s nice to just see positivity within gaming. Also, probably the most I’ve ever seen Colin smile :) almost passed out laughing when I heard him say “teabagging”

Dennis Parker

What a nice guy. Great episode

Mario Villelli

I loved that episode. Keep up the great content as always

Greg Middleton

Fantastic episode. Thanks 😊

Billy boob

That was ace 👌🏻

Great interview, Colin. Can’t wait for you to have him on again.

Alex

I had a big smile on my face the entire time listening to this. I'm looking forward to the follow up interview later this year.

Blake Wall

I have to say I agree with his taste for games and for the same reasons I also am bad at online multiplayer games and I could take the time to get good at them but I don't find the community very enjoyable so I'd rather just play something else

This has been the best experience with media I have had in a LONG time. This was truly special Colin, and I hope you realize the importance of having William tell his story. I am a Major Crime Detective (Robbery, homicide, and Gangs) video games are my escape to decompress from the stress of the job. Listening to William was so joyful and gave me hope that my video game career is FAR from over. Cheers sir.

LastStandMedia

That's my thing, too. I don't really find meaning (or quality) in online play. It's not even a talent thing (though it can sometimes be that, too).

P Wolly

God damn this was so good. Thanks William for taking the time to share with us!!

Iqan Adil

Probably my favorite episode on LSM. This was really wholesome for some reason, and having it around Christmas was just perfect.

Davosplat

I echo the sentiments expressed in this thread, I loved this episode as much or more than any other to date. Mr. Holbert is an inspiration to me and I have only heard him speak for 45 min. Thank you sir for showing how to enjoy a hobby with dignity and grace. I look forward to being a similarly cool and adjusted grandpa someday.

Jordan campos

This episode made me upgrade my Patreon Tier. Love the interviews Last Stand has been doing lately.

lazer_josh

This episode is top tier col 👌

I finally had time to sit down and enjoy this episode. It might be one of the best episodes on LSM yet. What a wonderful man. Please make sure to have him back. I would even love to see LSM make him part of the family in some capacity should he have the time for it. Great job Col!

Quintin Propes

I’m super behind and playing catch up here. Colin we need Bill on again. We just need a more in depth conversation about his gaming experiences throughout life. Walk us through each console and such. Hell I’d love a side series and could listen for hours about his time as a beat cop and a homicide detective. We need more of this fine fine man.
