Paucity | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 176

Bad news: Sony isn't going to be able to make as many PlayStation 5 consoles as it was hoping, at least in the short term. What does that mean for you? It means that, if you're still on the hunt for a console, you may want to get used to the idea of ponying up for a black market unit or settle in for a long and painful winter. We discuss. Plus: Gaming engine Unity has made a substantial acquisition, Q-Games acquires The Tomorrow Children from Sony, licensing issues bog down GTA's re-releases and Metal Gear Solid's legacy titles alike, Konami has totally botched the rollout of eFootball, and so on, and so on, and so on. Listener inquiries allow us to cleanly wrap things up as always, touching on subjects like Mass Effect's revival, the demise of Jump Force, the uncertain future of Media Molecule, and word from a funeral director that -- yes -- she listens to Sacred Symbols while embalming bodies. We suppose somebody's gotta do it. Get some Sacred Symbols merch! https://LastStandMedia.shop Follow the hosts on Twitter! Not gonna lie, when you were reading the doctor fly thing I was half expecting the story to ends up with "The doctor then asked me, if I wanted to know what games came out this week, where would I go?" The brain does its own weird thing sometimes hehe

As someone who lives in Calgary, the Last of Us sets seems awesome. They kept shutting down streets and major highways and the way they broke down cars and buildings looked great. Also, my best friend is still working here, in Calgary on the set, they are not quite wrapped production, as at least Pedro Pascal is still kicking around filming all week here. It has definitely gotten me more excited about it :) I hope its good.

Yeah I also think the supply constraints on the PS5 does help Xbox. I was able to easily order an Xbox Series S for pick up at Best Buy last week. That Best Buy seems to get a new batch every week and they don't instantly disappear. Right now, I'm not even bothering to try to get a PS5 (or even Series X so I went with the S). I think the S might suffer less from supply constraints? Idk I heard that somewhere. I'm not going to pay scalper prices or put a crazy amount of effort into buying a consumer product whether it is a PS5, a watch or that Metroid Dread amiibo that sold out instantly (I tried to get it immediately after the direct where it was announced!)... Going nuts to try to get some entertainment product is just falling prey to consumerism.

Man can’t wait for next weeks episode so y’all can cover how bad the GTA trilogy looks now that it’s been released. The character models are looking awful, the changes in faces for side characters looks so bad, and the rain mechanic has been done pretty bad. They were so lazy they didn’t even bother to put the rain mechanic over bodies of water in San Andreas. In some ways this trilogy version is completely gimped compared to the originals, and now you can’t even get the originals anymore. The memes have been great though.

Pedantic Police here, It was Hitler's bodyguard who hastily burnt his body outside the Furherbunker, as it was Hitler's last order to them that his body not be available for desecration by the Russians. It was however a poorly done job thus the Russians finding the remains of a smoldering corpse outside the bunker. Just wanted to expand on an interesting piece of history. Fun fact, the KGB supposedly have Hitlers partial skull with a bullet hole in it, located in their archives. There are pictures and video online if you search.

I agree with Chris on the spawning issue in Vangaurd that's why I stay away from the blitz mode it's way too chaotic. The campaign was surprisingly good with awesome characters but was pretty short as always. Zombies is really bad but I have to grind it for the last trophies lol. Overall I'd give it a 7 or so not the best cod but definitely not the worst. Colin I also liked Far Cry 6 early on but like a lot of Ubisoft games the more it goes the more repetitive and bloated it gets and by the end I was burnt out and just wanted it to end. I'm curious if you will feel the same way or if you will enjoy it the whole time.

I was super-hyped for the PS5, based around current exclusives like Demon's Souls, God of War: Ragnarok, and whatever will be coming down down the pike from Fromsoftware, Bluepoint, whatever Silent Hill is doing etc. But due to the shortages, I have redirected my energy into catching up on my backlog, and of course always returning to the fine wine that is the Super Nintendo. Personally, I'm just fine with waiting until whenever. But it has gotten to the point where I could get an email saying they are in stock and I might say "Meh". I'm sure I am not alone in this, and that might be the most foreboding thing for the console's foreseeable future. Great show, dudes!

The whole "college is a necessary next step after high school" is also true in Australia. I remember all my teachers in school just acted like it was the only option.

As someone who lives in Japan, it is entirely due to supply issues with PS5. I have applied to every lottery I've seen and only won mine a week ago since my wife was nice enough to apply as well (the sales clerk even mentioned how we were lucky since it will be even harder to get one soon). PS5's do not exist here. Xbox is selling better but I would wager it's only due to the fact that you can actually buy them if you follow Twitter supply tracking accounts (versus PS5 which basically get instantly bought by bots). Another thing is the fact that mobile games are MASSIVE here. On a packed train, you will basically never seen Switches but you will see 80% of people on their phones with a large number of them playing crappy reskinned mobile games. Sony has abandoned the Japanese market.

This thumbnail made me do the impossible. I rewatched Jingle All the Way for the first time in like 10 years. My God it’s bad, but it’s charming in some strange way. It’s on Disney Plus btw. 😅

Regarding picking pronouns in games, picking your character as a male, or female makes sense... but pronouns? Example; I booted up Forza and was asked to pick He/Him, She/Her, no problem there tbh but for some psychotic reason, They/Them. That's the one I have the contention with, it's normalising this nonsense for children, they'll think this is a normal thing... It isn't. It's pandering to an infinitesimally small amount of attention seeking people. I know it's easy to just dismiss this stuff as something you can just ignore but this stuff isn't healthy at all, the they/them stuff, I mean. If an individual person wants to live this way.. Fine, not my business, you do you. But why is it being openly advertised as a normal thing in games that children play? I won't have my daughter play any games that let's her think she can be a "they/them".

Angel DeJesus

The convo about games in movies and tv reminded me of this one scene in Netflix's Atypical(great show). There's a point where two of the characters are playing a game together on PS4. Then they show the tv, and it's Horizon. My internal scream was so loud.

Simon Pusateri

I struggled to come around on this topic for a while, but I think your argument misses the point. Inclusivity in this way isn't meant to brainwash non-trans people into thinking that they are trans by providing a "they/them" option. People will choose the option that makes sense to them, and as you alluded to, 99%+ of people will choose one of those first two options, but by doing so they will be much more comfortable with someone who chose the third option if and when that happens.

Liam Mcnulty

Disagree with you, Simon. Trans people transition from male to female, or vice versa. They/them isn't transgender. And I know from personal, anecdotal experience that it does actually make many children identify as they/them because its considered "cool" and trendy to be anything other than they're own gender identity. This person I'm referring to got so confused and depressed she attempted suicide. I didn't want to bring this up, but even she said she got confused by Tumblr pushing this stuff that she felt it was the trendy thing to do, and then struggled with mental illness as a result. She's currently getting help. But sure, it's "harmless" to push this made up they/them nonsense into children who are easily led. You miss the point.

Just on the Destiny conversation (As I'm a recent new player too) there's sadly not much in the way of free content. However, all the expansions are on Games Pass! I suggest starting a character on Xbox or PC, and playing though the campaigns there (especially Forsaken), then when you have had a decent try of the content, move your character save over to Playstation and buy any content packs you like there! (all your trophies come over too!) Thats what I did :-)

You're 100% right about Fight Night, it was really the king of boxing games and still is, it hasn't been topped, and now that it's gone theres an awful hole where it once was. They lasted the test of time too. I got an old ps2 copy to play it again recently and man, it's so much fun and still holds up. We NEED another boxing game, its been too long

Nygile Oliver

Also it's a travesty chris hasn't seen grandma's boy, hes gotta get on that, hed love it

Julian Zhu

Get well, Dustin. Great episode, guys.

Comment comes in on how Colin pronounces DOOku wrong as Doeku then 2 seconds later he pronounces it Wheta Digital instead of “Wet”a. I think Beta is what’s throwing you off. Colin you are like my Dad who calls his farm animals by the wrong name and calls his male animals girls and female animals boys. Even if they have 3 foot horns lol. Bless you. Great episode.

ender wiggin

I believe Colin mispronounced WETA. Later, Chris says it correctly, but seems to stop and "correct" himself, and he starts pronouncing it the same way Colin was pronouncing it. I went and listened to a few videos in which Peter Jackson says it... and im pretty sure he isnt pronouncing it like Colin. Am I hearing things?

Jeremy Craves

I started The Persistence and it’s pretty good. The walking is slow since it’s made for VR but there’s a short teleporting mechanic that can speed movement up a bit. I’ll probably beat it and look forward to whatever they are doing next.

LastStandMedia

I actually just added it to my download list today; PS5 reminded me to do so, which was cool.
