The third entry in the Metal Gear Solid franchise is the first game to take us backwards in time. While the original two adventures took place slightly ahead of their release window, MGS3 takes place 40 years prior to its 2004 launch, and within is a captivating Cold War-slash-alternate history tale about the Soviet Union, some American (and other foreign) agents, and a vaunted, nuclear-armed super weapon that will change the face of warfare forever. Infused with memorable characters and dialogue, revamped combat, and a deeply geopolitical tale, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is considered by many fans of the series to be its best entry. Do the Moriarty Brothers agree? As usual, there's only one way to find out: Hit play.

One of the greatest games of all time! Pumped for this 🏆

Shaun Wilkinson

Still my favourite game of all time. Looking forward to this one.

everythingevi1

Hey! You’re pretty good.

Ben-Roy

Good thing you downloaded this in time 👀 For some reason this one is super easy to Platinum.

Rob Kvasne

"kept you waiting huh?" So excited for this!

Pasqual Ribot

Colin, I dont get your take on too many mechanics with mgs3, gta:sa and botw. All super succesfull games and they have that in common, maybe that's a factor in their succes.

Campbell Parker

Been super excited for this coming up!

I’m pretty sure you can have no kill runs all 4 mgs games. Idk though, starting not to enjoy these knockback episodes. You act like things like MGS 3 and Ghostbusters are beneath you and those people that enjoyed the properties are also beneath you. It’s like you have some sort of agenda when you focus on negative after negative and after you beat it like a dead horse, you come back later in the episode to trash it again or how you rather talk about a completely different subject for 20 to 30 mins instead of covering the big beats of the games. It seemed to be a chore for you to review these for us and 3/4 of the episode isn’t that much fun to listen to. For a game you say you enjoyed, you made it sound like you were reviewing the bad Star Wars movies. MGS 3 and MGS are my favorite Kojima games and it’s truly too bad that you got hung up on little things and missed what made things like this and ghostbusters magical by doing so. I wish you would capture the last 30 mins of this podcast and apply it to the rest of your critiquing. Take it easy guys.

Colin, you mentioned in the episode that MGS3 doesn't feel like Metal Gear and that your experience with MGS5 Phantom Pain also didn't feel like Metal Gear. I agree with you that 1 and 2 are the best. That said, I would give MGS5 Ground Zeroes a try. You've mentioned that you liked the opening of Phantom Pain in the hospital but didn't like the open world missions afterward. I felt the same way. Ground Zeroes is the prologue to Phantom Pain and is very short, maybe an hour long, but is the true modern Metal Gear game that feels very classic MGS. It isn't open world, but rather works like a Shadow Moses style setting of a base that has no load screens. You can often find it in PSN sales for less than $5.

The James Bond-esque aesthetic from direction to theme song is absolutely GENIUS. Really personifies the idea the global politics is all “an act” or a Scene to be consumed by the masses, regardless of truth. Brings chills to me bones

Noah Friscopp

(Jokingly) horrified imagining these two just shooting their way through the game with shotguns and rifles and not mostly non-lethally haha. Great episode.

Maxx Lazos

Solid Snake is the dominant dominant gene clone of big boss. That’s why he sounds and looks the same. Liquid is recessive recessive, that’s why he’s different in every way. Solidus (in between liquid and solid) is a clone with both dominant and recessive genes from Big Boss. Hope this context helps

Paolo is awesome. The day in a life of a manga artist is awesome. I highly recommend abroadinjapan he goes to a lot of awesome historic areas that are not so popular in Japan. He went to this museum that preserves a lot of the tech and furniture in japan from the 50s/60s very cool stuff

KomakiKhaos

Love the snake eater theme

TROTMAC96

Considering all of your complaints with mgs3, I really don't think you're going to like mgs4. I still can't wait to hear your thoughts on it though.

Nicholas Perfect

Still my favorite entry in the series… even though the ending feels like half the game.

MarkGrouch

Following Colin’s point about it being cool if everyone actually spoke Russian, Kojima actually does something like that in MGS V. In the game there’s different groups that speak different languages and you cannot understand what they’re saying until you find interpreters for that specific language and recruit them.

Otrant

Solid and Liquid are clones of Big Boss, that’s what the Les Enfant Terribles project was all about. And yes, Solid and Liquid DO look alike, which is why Meryl thinks you’re Liquid when she first meets you. If you watch the mission briefing in MGS1, you’ll notice that Solid Snake’s hair is naturally blonde like liquid’s. He dyes it.

Otrant

You cannot do a non-lethal run in MGS1. You have to kill the bosses. Also chill

Peter Pham

You guys need to finish this up with MGS 4 now! I don't understand how Colin played MGS 4 without 3. It's like watchin back to the future 3 and skipping the first one.

Brandon Soto

Need an update on the pool situation next episode, Col’.

Matt Stinnett

I know it wasn’t on purpose but I’m kinda bummed out that The Sorrow and his “boss fight” got completely ignored. Such an interesting segment of the game which varies depending on how you played the game up to that point. I really gotta remember to write in and ask Dagan for his thoughts on Yoji Shinkawa as an artist.

Your Boi Nicky V

Got to say, this is one of my GOATS but that's mainly for the story and setting. I pretty much agree with you Colin that it doesn't play too well, I think 2 and even 1 hold up a lot better. Very excited to see what you boys make of 4 now.

Mark Michaels

Metal Gear Solid 5 is a direct continuation of Portable Ops and Peacewalker which continue the Big Boss story directly from 3. The gameplay, mission structure, gathering resources, soldiers, and building a base is all from those games. The games are pretty ugly by today’s standards but are important to the overall lore. Particularly Peacewalker. The first time I played this, I completely missed the fact that Ocelot is The Boss and The Sorrow’s son.

CJ

I was going to buy the MGS Collection to play these games but alas Konami doesn't want me to

Josh Correa

Paolo is one of my favorite YouTube channels. I love the series where he goes to different areas of Tokyo and has a list of things to do there. It's definitely useful for planning a trip to Japan. I also recommend Only in Japan if you want to learn more of the different places, food and traditions in Japan.

Fernando

The entire MG saga should be rebooted for the current generation of consoles at this point. This franchise has so much potential but even the HD Collection looks like ass compared to modern games of the same genre. The story and the topics are so good but are no longer accesible with these games. Imagine a rebooted series in the same technical level as Horizon Forbidden West. It's like this franchise was meant to be executed on this generation of games and has always been waaaay too ahead of its time. Make it happen, Konami!

Fernando

So weird to find a reference to Paolo on a Colin show. Really took me by surprise. I love that dude and his Day in the Life series is absolutely phenomenal. Great shout.

Fernando

I only played MGS when it came out on PS1. I've ALWAYS wanted to experience the entire franchise but even with the HD collection the games are way too dated. I couldn't even watch a game walkthrough on YouTube. These games are screaming for an entire saga reboot for modern consoles. The possibilities are endless and both the story and world would really come to life with the current technologies. I hope Konami figures out that's what needs to happen.

Luke Silletta

Dude I love Paulo From Tokyo!! Another great similar channel I love is Abroad in Japan.

tejotl

one correction - at one point you suggest that Shagohod is where Metal Gear started - actually in the game you hear that Shagahod is actually a competing concept to Metal Gear ('put legs on a tank') which is pushed by Otacon's father. So if anything MGS3 shows why Metal Gear came on top design wise while Shagohod crashed and burned

Jack Sibert

When MGS3 was ramping up for release Kojima said many times that you would be playing as big boss, the DNA donor for the various snakes. As far as why Solid Snake and Liquid Snake look different- Solid Snake and Solidus Snake were considered to be "perfect clones" while Liquid was flawed.

Greg Hommel

Oooh I know you are hearing it from the fans Colin. I liked all that shit. It’s funny that you found those things to break the immersion, when I and most people found those exact things to be immersive. I find MGS to be the most evolved franchise that exists. Every title added new mechanics until 4 and 5 where you could crawl, creep, roll, on your back, on your belly, stick up your enemy, pat them down, so many options. I don’t blame you for your opinion though. I can definitely appreciate the way it affected you. Thanks for sticking it out enough to realize the great things about it.

LastStandMedia

I just ran through half of the scenes with people shooting at me. The game doesn't exactly stop you.

CJ

Maybe.. or maybe Konami just doesn't care and will not do anything lol it's not pachinko so why would they care haha

Matt Stinnett

You're right, I totally missed it and I don't know how. I listened to most of the episode on my way to work so maybe something happened with Apple podcasts where it skipped ahead a bit between listening sessions. That app does some strange stuff at times. Thanks for the reply.

Rob Kvasne

Imagine my excitement when Dagen laughed at my stupid "Dear Naked Moriarty and Big Boss Moriarty" write in. Absolutely incredible. Thank you both for another great episode!

OrochiNewsTeam

Great take Moriarty Bros, I liked the end discussion. It's interesting how a videogame can touch so many deep topics. Only Kojima can do this. It gave me a new perspective on patriotism and being a soldier. I know Colin didn't delve in the radio conversations and survival content. But its very interesting and somewhat educational learning about moss, mushrooms, rodents, field medicine, classic movies history of military rations and my favorite; eating and learning about snakes. So many rabbit holes of information that Kojima finds fascinating. No doubt Kojima inspired so many types of people in many fields of work and why he is forever beloved by a loyal fan base. The end of this game made me cry oddly enough. Not from sadness but respect for The Boss. Her story is very intriguing. Peace Walker continues this storyline the best. I know the content of Snake Eater is thick but I'm surprised you guys didn't hit on how space program was a cover for nuclear advancement with Russia and how Kojima tied in Adam(ska) and Eve(Eva) and Snake reference. What a special game. Looking forward you guys playing other games in the series.

Tony Bertucci

Did either of you guys pick up on the fact that Ocelot was the Boss and the Sorrow's son?

Carlos Quintanilla

I remember being super surprised as a kid when it's revealed SIGINT went on to be the DARPA chief from MGS1.

LastStandMedia

I wish they integrated that stuff better into the story, especially the conversations with the woman operator, who I didn't feel like I ever really got to know because she only wanted to talk when I was shutting the game off.

Dalton Kolkmeyer

I love MGS3. I felt a little burned by the bait-and-switch in MGS2, which I ended up warming up to. I remember refusing to read any previews, reviews or look at any screen shots for MGS3. I went in completely blind when I played it for the first time on Christmas morning. I was completely blown away when I realized I was playing as a young Big Boss during the Cold War. I completed the game in one sitting on Christmas and it's one of my favorite gaming memories.

Felix Johnson

Onto some of your comments about David Hayter voicing Big Boss in this game. In MGS2 in Japan, both Solidus and Solid share the same voice actor. It makes the whole who's the real Solid Snake situation more strenuous in that game. Something that didn't get localized too well. Both Solid and Solidus also share a identical facial model, but PS2 graphics don't portray this as well as you might imagine especially since Snakes bandanna covers half of his head. Them all sharing the same Voice Actor and face was a little more direct in Japanese IMO. It's a tad bit clearer that they're all identical.
