Anti-Crunch | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 172

Square Enix-owned studio Eidos is running a little experiment on behalf of the industry-at-large: Its teams are now working four days a week, for 32 hours, with Fridays off. In a line of work absolutely demanding of your time, that a AAA publisher and well-respected studio are taking the initiative to do things differently is an awesome sign, though it's unclear if such a life/work balance is even possible if you want to create truly great games. Naturally, we discuss. Also: Sony has quietly poached the Head of Content of Apple Arcade, Ryu Ga Gotoku simultaneously loses its director and producer, EA and FIFA are fighting over the future of Electronic Arts' most important franchise, and much more. Then, listener inquiries! Are we as perplexed by Ubisoft's recent decisions as many of our audience members? What do we expect out of Returnal's rumored upcoming update? Did Crystal Dynamics lie to its audience by unleashing pay-to-win schemes in The Avengers? Will the boys ever cease quarreling about the efficacy of bidets? I just cant relate to this toilet paper talk...you all need to move on to wet wipes, it will change your life as you forever look down on the Godless toilet paper using heathens for the rest of your days....

Kenneth Oms

What Dustin is referring to isn’t a bidet. It’s called a washlet. Washlets are attached to your toilet. Bidets are the ones that are separate from the toilet and next to it. I actually think Bidets are mostly for women to clean their lady parts. The drain is like a tub drain so things can get stuck there if you catch my drift. I had a bidet when I lived in Puerto Rico

Luis Sanchez

Hell yeah ALDI!!! Dustin knows what's up.

Shaun Wilkinson

Just a note on PS5 availability. I work in the UK but for a German Audio Visual company and we were recently offered PS5’s from Sony with a €80 discount. Almost everyone snapped one up. It seems that PS5 availability in Europe is pretty high right now.

Cole Minder

I sit down to watch this as I enjoy a nice Italian submarine sandwich for lunch

Clay Layne

This is fucking gold. Its nice to have the weekly dose of bidet talk!

Stefano Fontana

just so you all know there is an actual store in the Greater Toronto Ontario area called NoFrills and it is the Aldi of Canada. so... Im loving this connection. However, Canadian NoFrills food is OFTEN better than the branded counterparts

Maxx Lazos

I know Adam Sessler was a dick to Colin…but I’ve enjoyed the G4 reviews. Maybe mostly nostalgia but I do have a soft spot for x play. Fuck it, invite him on the show

Hello gents, just offering a brief update to your last discussion question about Marvel's Avengers and their recent XP booster. They increased the XP grind back in March right before the PS5/Series X relaunches of the title. Following that, they would go on to test boosters by offering an xp boost for free and other items. Now it is a paid product. For those playing the game, you saw each of these steps being telegraphed if you were part of it at the beginning of this year.

FYI, I'm pretty sure Microsoft does not own Moon Studios. Colin said so in his script. Please correct me if I'm wrong... Not a big deal of course, so I probably wouldn't write in a correction to be read next week.

Brian Presley

FYI: The Biomutant game trial is 5 hours from WHEN YOU START THE DOWNLOAD…it’s the stupidest thing Sony has done and provides no benefit to anyone with slower download speeds

Matt Wiles

I love the fact that Aldi in the States is EXACTLY the same as the Aldi situation in the U.K. Cheaper, but has many items at a better quality and cheaper than its more expensive counterparts. Really sounds bizarre to hear Americans say exactly the same as what the British say, day to day about Aldi.

Liam Mcnulty

Yep, boil the milk and pour it over some corn flakes, it sounds mental but its genuinely nice. Only works with corn flakes though. And I was cracking up when Colin pointed at the camera and Chris got defensive lol. You lot are the highlight of my week. One other thing, the original Metal Gear Solid end song is an Irish lyric song called "The Best is Yet to Come."

Matt Wiles

Sorry to spam, I’ve never done it before and won’t again, but just to say; well done guys. You guys are truly excellent at keeping it fresh every week. The passion really shows. You’re changing people’s lives and you’re smashing the competition too, so keep it up. The energy is fantastic. Great job.

Liam Mcnulty

My wife likes Aldi, but I have to laugh that instead of Wagon Wheels, she buys Cart Wheels 😂 the rip off names are great

SneakerHead24

Maybe not as much a “correction” than a “different perspective”…..but Colin, I too used to think my cheap ass parents were insane about the things they claimed cost too much when I was a child. So much so that I spent the entire Chicago summer at my first apartment as a 19 year old sweating my ass off because I feared how much the air conditioning was going to cost me due to my dads insane proclamations as a child. Only to find out once I caved in August after I just couldn’t take it anymore that the difference in the electricity bill was only $12!!!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! I began teasing my parents about their false claims of things we couldn’t afford during my childhood till my mom finally shot back at me years later telling me that it’s just me in a small condo that I had to provide for, not a set of parents and 4 kids in a large house. Maybe if you had a wife and 4 kids to buy all those paper towels, toilet paper, and zip lock bags for you would think differently. I still completely agree with you by the way, but I’m just offering a window into their mindset for you to consider. 2 sides to every story and what not. -Michael from Chicago

Liam Mcnulty

He'll definitely refuse 😂"i dOnT TaLk tO nAzIs, i pUnCh tHeM" lol

Colin, fratello, am I your only Italian fan? Any way: - if you ever come in Rome, let me know and I’ll have you taste *actual* Italian charcuterie, and help you with the pronunciation of… everything. - I’ll also explain to you what a bidet is. Nothing you guys or the other fans here have ever said has anything to do with actual bidets. Please. As an Italian-Italian, the past few episodes have been harsh on my mind and soul.

Cash

Love the trend of longer podcasts, thanks

Kaleb

It's fucked that prior to adding pay to win features to Avengers they made it harder to level up. I hate that people continue to support the game. I dont think you guys knew that before discussing the topic. It's messed up.

What about heating up Weetabix in the microwave? Not hugely common but not out of the question....

NotSkyWalker

Maybe it's low-hanging fruit... but I tend to equate G4's transition to stuff like "Ninja Warrior" to MTV's transition to 'literally-everything-but-music.' This is not a positive association... I'm inclined to echo Chris' thoughts and will likely still rely on YouTube + etc. for industry happenings

Sumojoe118

Ubisoft already has one of the best and most popular shooters of the last generation with Siege and its still going strong, I dont know why they don't just double down on that instead of all this trash like X-Defiant and Frontline.

Mike

I agree Adam sessler can go fuck himself

Zack Apuzzo

As a fellow mostly Italian listener, I think the consensus on "gabagool/capocollo" is that back in the day the lesser educated Elis island Italian's said "gabagool" because they didn't fully learn how to read and mispronounced it as such. And that more educated Italians inland say "capicol" Also CHRIS, you mention "just listen to smash" when talking about how to pronounce Samus. I have you know the Smash Melee announcer pronounces her name as "Sah-mus". Thank you.

Raymond Stuart

Hey CDC! Great show and great discussions. I know this is not the questions thread but I’ll probably forget. The discussion about Ubisoft raised a question for me. Back in May Ubisoft announced that they were going to be focusing more on the free to play approach seeking to attract new gamers to the Ubisoft brand. The announcement of Ghost Recon Frontline fits this model obviously. With a generation growing up today on free to play games with heavy monetization; I wonder how far forward Ubisoft is looking in their business strategy. This strategy is clearly angering their current player base but likely represents a shift to a new player base that they believe has a bigger upside. Interested in your thoughts.

LastStandMedia

There's no doubt they're making anticipatory adjustments. It's as you said: Are the gains worth the losses?

Thank you for reading my question out, you made my weekend a lot better!!!

Ross Stoddart

Not sure if anyone has said this, but Colin said that Moon Studios (Ori dev) are a Microsoft owned studio but they’re not, they’ve recently signed a publishing deal with Private Division (Take Two).

Lewis Templeton

Thought I was watching a lockmort edit when Chris started ranting about peoples flies being undone.

Zack Fair

I live in the UK and Aldi is awesome, as is coppa. Dustin, in terms of the Bidet across the pond, its a separate unit where after you shimmy over after taking a dump. Also Colin, how are you not curious about trying it after talking about it so much lol

Grant Ritchey

Colin, where did you get your guerilla shirt? Custom made?

Andrew Gambill

Venom Let There be Carnage is the movie that just came out in October 2021 but was delayed by covid and was supposed to come out sometime in 2020. Could the video be some kind of abandoned cross marketing between the film and Insomniacs games; either Miles Morales or the PS% remaster of the 2018 game that got abandoned after the movie was delayed a year?

Nygile Oliver

G4 actually isnt running with the same old crew surprisingly, they're hiring some youtubers, but I'm not sure about some of the new talent so it probably wont do much help. For example, they got the completionist, who I dont really care for but he does complete a lot of games so hes a good pick for game knowledge, but they also got some weird ones like the black hokage, who I've followed for years and doesnt really know much about games outside of what he plays and hes kind of just an asshole lol, so I guess we'll see how it goes

Nygile Oliver

Also Dustin talking about reviews 👌👌👌 that's a smart man right there

The Eclectic Gamer

Colin, the complaints you levied against Deathloop are completely misinformed and are actually resolved within the game in most respects. I mean did Dustin go take a shit during you and Chris’s discussion of Deathloop because he should’ve been able to clarify things but didn’t say a word. The game does give you these concise pieces of information that you need as it relates to furthering the story. There are always these encapsulations that are stored whether it is a password, key code or something related to story progression that then updates your objective marker. With that said, you can also choose to scour the journal for the relevant information and conceal aspects of the HUD so whatever permutation you want, the game has it! As far as residuum is concerned, it’s part of a story beat that you have to come across that includes research documentation, which highlights this resource as a mechanism to keep weapons and other personal affects. It’s not like Ether in Returnal where it’s not clearly explained, this unique resource in the Deathloop universe is something that has been studied and fits in with the overarching narrative. Plus, it is tied into the lore of the game and the work of some of the visionaries, you just have to keep playing and it will reveal itself… I mean to bring in another game as it relates to systems and the menus-look no further than Death Stranding, this is a game where systems are routinely discussed I mean did you ever look at the Tips section in the menu there are literally hundreds of things overall that appear in chunks after every mission and it’s a game that all of you adored, rightfully so. Lastly, the content is extremely readable as they have concept maps, which is far easier than what most other games use. This is why having advance copies helps a ton so that you don’t feel inclined to share a “too early” impression after having played a game 2 hours . Play the game learn the systems and then comment on it but since it’s the first thing you decide to share about the game a whole month after its released, it do not offer the correct analysis and now mad people won’t buy the game. And for the record, the mouse-like cursor is in FarCry 6 as well, though it does accept analog movement in most circumstances but not all.

I went on holidays last year and used a bidet for the first time in the hotels I stayed at. Genuinely changed the way I think about post-crap cleaning and now that I've retuned to my non- bidet household I long for that sweet easy cleaning. With the bidet, you don't have to spend minutes upon minutes just wiping and wiping and ending up with the dreaded "red ring of death". The mess just washes away! It's awesome. I'm with you Dustin!

Zack Fair

You're right, I've not played Deathloop yet, waiting for all you guys to discuss your thoughts on it as I trust you over sites like IGN, Kinda funny etc

Brian Keogh

Hey colin just listening through the latest sacred symbols and noticed you guys were talking about a possible metal gear game announcement at the VGAs with the recent rumors. Ava McCann could possibly be referring to the MGS 1 song The Best is Yet to Come, pretty famous song from the franchise which lyrics are spoken as Gaeilge (Irish). Just my guess anyways, from a long time irish listener, Brian. PS, in the song at about the 2 and half minute mark it totally sounds phonetically like “Sony is a shit in our mouths”

Zack Fair

Ubisoft must really listen to this show and not like Chris as now they is a rumored Splinter Cell game been developed. Lol
