Defining Duke, Episode 40: Xbox Makes Big Announcements In Japan (Patreon)

At the Tokyo Game Show, Xbox unveiled quite a bit ranging from exciting additions to Game Pass in the form of AI: The Somnium Files and Scarlet Nexus to Cloud Gaming finally being available in many more areas around the world. The question we're left with is, is this enough? Has Xbox ceased its half measures in Japan and are finally taking it seriously? Cog and Matty debate. There has also been much movement on the PC front from Capcom's public commitment to Epic taking a page out of the PlayStation playbook for their own achievements. It's not all good news as a leaked memo has stated that China plans on implementing more restrictions on gaming. That plus your Patron write-ins!

Thanks for talking about the government memo in the Chinese games industry regarding the depiction same sex relationships, effeminate men and grey morality in games and that most media are not talking about it. It SHOULD be at the front page of IGN, you are correct Matty. A lot of the media champions LGBTQ+ and diversity initiatives yet are silent when something something that directly targets them through censorship in China happens, all because of their financial conflicts. It's the highest form of hypocrisy and brings into question their integrity across the board. Great show guys!

I agree with the write-in about the same people getting their questions highlighted week to week, and I feel like Matty could have explained why that happens without being completely dismissive to the question. Matty actually did a really good job of explaining why some questions aren't read. But flat out saying the write-in was "false" was dismissive of that individual's perception. And likely the perception of other patreon supporters. A better way to respond, instead of getting defensive, is say "We hear you. We try really reallly hard to get diverse write-ins. Here are a few reasons why we may not read someone's questions .... ". Your audience loves you guys. I'm a patreon of LSM because I was a Matty supporter first and the creation of Defining Duke introduced me to LSM. Keep working hard and getting better everyday.

I usually read a bunch of the questions before the podcast airs, and I can typically pick out which questions are likely to get read. So I agree. That said, I was super surprised that my question on nerfing the gnasher in Gears got read a few episodes ago.

I like your idea for tying the "platinum" into reward points. I think to further evolve the system too there should be an award akin to th platinum for beating a game. I know many games do give an achievement for this, but we also know that most gamers don't beat games. If there was a reward point carrot on a stick for each completion and each platinum that would be a whole new game. As many games out there have a 1000/1000 without ever the rolling credits. I'm rambling.... My bad.

Poor China. I feel for China. They are thirty years behind the US in a time where they think the censorship of the media will mold their society in to the shape they want. Or perhaps they are insecure and do not wish to project weakness to the rest of the world. Either way, it will take them about thirty years for art to begin imitating life, at which point they will blame the media for society’s woes.
