Getting to the Point | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 170

The inevitable has happened: Bluepoint Games has officially joined PlayStation Studios as its 16th team. You may recall that this news kinda-sorta leaked months ago, and either way, it's the most obvious acquisition Sony could have possibly made, so we're not exactly shocked. Yet, there's much to say, because it seems like Bluepoint may be breaking the mold when it comes to what they're best known for, potentially focusing on new projects rather than remakes and remasters. There's other first and second party news to consider, too. On the first party front, rumors strongly indicate Guerrilla's in-development multiplayer game may actually be Horizon-related, which frankly disappoints us. Meanwhile, over in second party, Destruction AllStars dev Lucid is apparently working on a Twisted Metal revival. Color us interested, though bummed Jaffe isn't consulting. There's other news, as well -- Firesprite's headcount has grown, GTA re-releases have been rated, etc. -- and we end (as we always do) with listener inquiries. What games did we turn our noses up at only to be pleasantly surprised when we actually gave them a chance? What licensed song do you most associate with a video game? Do we even care about Abandoned anymore? Is Colin being too harsh on bidets, and in turn European sensibilities? Shocker of the century said No one. They really should of announced it along with Housemarque.

Us Naruto fans are standing down (but standing by!)

Frank G.

Go on git! Lol

What was even weirder about the fanboying on Twitter was the other type of people it brought out. The people who just couldn't wait to pile on the crew out of basically nowhere. Do these people honestly sit there watching for any sort of perceived negativity towards other companies? Colin and Dustin were still very much correct in what they said during that episode but to remove it from the fair handshake they gave in return is what sucked. It's okay to point out the dissapointing moments of non-Sony gaming companies, but as the crew always says, no one (very few) Playstation fans are equally as hard on them as they are to everyone else.

Very happy for New World. I did some rough numbers but the peak player base was 700k, if we assume all of those players purchased the game at 40$ it means the game has already made 28 million in the first few days of launch. If you ever decide to do a sacred plus episode on when Sony used to have MMOs as Sony Online Entertainment, I highly recommend interviewing TheNerdSlayer. He’s done amazing detective work on how MMOs started, where they went wrong, and why the ultimately shut down. He’s done quite a few videos on Sony Online Entertainment

LastStandMedia

Yeah, it's just not the people I want to be involved with, nor do I want them watching our stuff. They suck.

Hey Colin, I think when you described a guy who trolled people by taking their Photoshop requests very literally you were referring to this: https://27bslash6.com/missy.html Haven't read this in years but it came to mind right away.

Derek Alcott

Oh yeah I look forward to this day. Also, how great is it that Seinfeld is on Netflix now.

The Witcher family show reminds me of when WB had a Mortal Kombat show in production for young girls. It was called MK Ultra Girls, no joke, and it's art was being done by YouTuber Rebel Taxi. It's pretty strange go look at the leaks. They didn't move forward with it though which I doubt will be the case for the Witcher series.

I took my girlfriend to see the South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut movie in 1999. Some kids outside the theater asked me to buy them tickets since it was rated R. I said no, and my gf was surprised. It just didn't feel right.

Denver Walker

I say Naroodo. Annunciating Na-Ru-To properly is what the kids call being too extra. Ily boys this was a great episode :)

You guys to listen to the duke podcast about the crystal dynamics story makes more sense

Julian Zhu

Spider-Man 2 being a bit more dark makes sense given the cast revealed, Kraven and Venom. I don't think this is the "Playstationism" of Spider-Man, as Dustin said on the show, Spider-Man has a ton of dark runs and storylines and tragedy really is a hallmark of Spider-Mans lore. That's kinda the beauty of Peter Parker is how light he can be in the face of the situations he is in. Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films definitely leaned into that. Also-- your guys thoughts on Horizon multiplayer is interesting. Has me thinking, they've already done a crossover with World, what if if this is a Monster Hunteresque Horizon experience they're cooking up? It makes a lot of sense.

Hey fun fact colin cloud was so close to being the ps2 fighter for soul caliber 2 but they couldn't get square enix to sign off on it so they went with heihachi instead

Just wanted to mention another situation where a third party developer helped make a first party game, and it's Bandai Namco with Super Smash Brothers, they've been the lead developer for the past two iterations of the franchise. I agree this isn't normal though, and in fact worrying that they've brought Crystal Dynamics on.

Been playing Death Stranding again myself with the PS5 upgrade, had my old save so it only took about 15 hours to get the platinum again for the upgrade. Had so much fun that I started the game from the start after getting the platinum. This game is a masterpiece and my favourite game of last generation.

LastStandMedia

That could be cool... but I think doubling-down on Horizon is just gonna run it into the ground.

LastStandMedia

Yes, but again, Nintendo is a first party. Microsoft's studio announced the collaboration. It's different.

brody_low

Red Dead Redemption crossing into Mexico has an incredible song.

BM

Why isn't Kojipro on the small list of studios that fit the Sony acquisition framework.

Zack Apuzzo

About the write in on licenced music in games, I've always loved the intro to Jak X with "you think I ain't worth a dollar but I feel like a millionaire" by queens of the stone age came to mind. Such an awesome track fitting with the energy of the game. That game first exposed me to the band and became a big fan ever since. life is strange has a fantastic collection of indie music as well!

LastStandMedia

I never even played Jak X, though that was certainly the time when licensed music was crawing all over games.

Take on Me is a great song and I noticed it’s been featured quite often in media lately, including video games (TLOU 2, MGS5, Just Cause 4). Colin, a-ha is a cool band and they actually have a pretty good and eclectic discography, even some in more recent years. Highly recommend as a fellow 80s music fan.

Just got want to say maybe the people saying the PS5’s are sitting in a scalpers garage are just pointing out the fact that you can go out and buy a scalped ps5 right now. The scalpers aren’t out of stock which means there are ps5’s sitting in a garage somewhere still waiting to be purchased at a mark up.

Nygile Oliver

Im glad you guys make the conscious effort to not just fanboy for sony and actually be honest about the good and bad they do. Cannot imagine being a fully grown adult and arguing with other grown men over which box of plastic is better lmao

KevinFausch

To my knowledge Microsoft never marketed The Initiative as a "AAAA" studio, that all came from a job post from one recruiter which was promptly deleted. If you look at what the studio leaders have said they actually say the opposite.

lazer_josh

Get LGR on as a guest? I bet he'd be down!

KevinFausch

Right, but it wasn't publicly marketed as such. One person saying "AAAA" in a single job post and then deleting it isn't them marketing the game as a "AAAA". It would be different if Phil Spencer or Darrell Gallagher said that.
