The Battle For Disney | Defining Duke Ultimate Episode 33

Disney owns some of the most alluring IP and game creators are taking note. The largest investor in that space is PlayStation who has locked down multiple Marvel titles and now an exclusive Star Wars game. On the other end, we have Xbox who has worked out deals for both Indiana Jones and Pirates Of The Caribbean. The real question Cog and Matty pose is, does Xbox have their finger on the pop culture pulse? Should they follow in the footsteps of PlayStation and shoot for their own Marvel or Star Wars games? It's a fierce debate, so enjoy!

To both of your points, I think foresight in pursuing a Disney IP is critical. It is risky, to an extent, but the payout would be great. Making a game about Ahsoka ahead of her Disney+ show, or a game about Marvel characters that are coming to the MCU in the near-future (Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Fantastic 4) seems to be a good bet... as Marvel Studios rarely misses (with the masses). Games take longer to develop than a movie/show, generally, so a proactive approach is the best one IMO!

The hard part about Ashoka is that she is that she is canon. So the amount of scrutiny and the fact that anything you do with her has to fit the narrative and the timeline because its existence would automatically be canon.

Yay, I finally got a series x today :) been playing gamepass on my PC, but I'd like to see the console set up. My previous Xbox purchase gleamed a red ring into my Iris with a forecast of depression.. I've been jaded ever since, but everyone deserves a second chance right? Wish me luck 😃

Fellas - just got to say phenomenal content. Love the energy and back-and-forth. As someone who wasn’t seeking Xbox content initially, I have to say this show has easily become some of my favorite internet content bar none. Keep up the excellent work, and I look forward to hearing more!

I wonder how much of an influence Sony having the rights to Spiderman plays a role in their relationship with Marvel and Disney overall. Could the deal to include Spiderman in the MCU include some kind of first look deal with new IPs for Playstation?

I really enjoyed this conversation you guys had. The one thing your conversations made me immediately reply though was that Xbox has to have a team that actually wants to make a game with that IP. As when Xbox bought all these studios the one thing that was heralded by the community and creators alike was that they weren't going to get in the way of the creative process and they could make the games they want to make. Well that is great but that also means Xbox can't just go to the Coalition and say hey you're making this captain America or blank panther game. Hey Ninja Theory we want you on this star wars game. As that is the direct opposite of letting the creators create. Fan's and the Media can't trumpet and ask for letting the creators create and then also say hey make whatever you want but you need to make this starwars game or marvel game, etc. Maybe they just don't want too. Freedom to create is great but that also means if they want to create a game about a fish in a post apocalyptic world instead of black panther then that needs to be okay too.

I'll say this: I don't care a huge amount for Star Wars and Marvel (getting tired of the latter, even) but not getting KOTOR was such a huge miss for Xbox, especially if they were in the bidding. All the points you guys say stands (new unproven studio and such) and while I'm pretty damn interested in Xbox's upcoming games moreso than Playstation's, it does indeed make it look like Xbox has far less for the common person to be interested. I mean, even now there's discussion that Kotor may never come to Xbox due to the precedent that FF7 Remake has set with PS and timed exclusives. Maybe when Indiana Jones (the movie) comes out it can be a cool touch stone again, but Star Wars is pretty much the other biggest thing and they missed out on it. I don't know what other properties can much. Maybe Xbox doesn't have their finger on the pulse at all. I think of popular games like Genshin Impact and how Xbox could probably pretty easily pay to get that. I do roll my eyes at the idea of Insomniac/Playstation having a marvel game universe though.
