It's about time! Sony has revealed that it will be conducting a 40 minute PS5-centric presentation in the coming days, and it'll be our first real, showcase-like look at PlayStation 5 content since the console launched (in fact, since long before it launched). The question is therefore this: What should we expect? God of War and Gran Turismo 7 seem like obvious choices. A Deathloop launch trailer, too. But it's what we don't know about that's most exciting of all, particularly from first and second party studios where the possibilities are seemingly endless. Plus: Death Stranding 2 looks like a distinct possibility, PlayStation Plus' newest free game offerings are a step in the right direction, Final Fantasy is about to storm PlayStation Now, and much more. Then: What's the difference between a remaster, a remake, and a reboot? Speaking of definitions, how do we define shovelware and vaporware? Will live shows like PAX ever make a full return? Will Chris ever return, or did he float away? All of that and more, as -- per usual -- we litter our show with your inquiries.

All you crazy kids have fun this weekend! I'll be there in spirit!

I think we’re gonna get a teaser for Spider-Man 2.

I find the whole Horizon upgrade path intriguing. I totally agree that it's a bizzare move, and absolutely the wrong move from Sony given the strides Microsoft has made with the Xbox ecosystem. I have to think though that this is absolutely an optics thing, and if Microsoft's strategy with Smart Delivery wasn't around to make comparisons with, then the vast majority of people wouldn't even bat an eyelid at Sony's strategy (or lack thereof). In any event, we live in a world where Smart Delivery is the new standard when it comes to cross-gen upgrades, so that's the standard Sony should be held to, and in that regard they are absolutely failing. As Colin points out, what makes this whole circus so bizzare is that it's coming from Sony, who absolutely have enough of a cushion and dominance in the market, that fucking over their customer base should be something they are actively trying to avoid. It's actually a pity that Xbox failed to compete with Sony last gen, as it's becoming crystal clear that Sony is now sitting in a spot where they are so complacent, doing right by the customer no longer seems a priority.

Stephen Forgione

Upgrades were a thing before Smart Delivery, the term is just a marketing term to describe the experience PC users have already.

Jake Z

Has LSM increased its podcast output to crowd out the competition?

Mike Po

I know Colin doesn't appreciate being told he's got to play certain games, so I will frame my thoughts differently. I am eagerly anticipating Colin's thoughts on Hades if he ever gets around to giving it a shot (also can't wait for his thoughts on Tales of Arise, which should be coming soon).

I agree with Dustin. Let me start by saying I’m a huge Death Stranding fan but I’m finished with that world. I just don’t see how you can build off of what I feel was complete/?concise? and sent off with a pretty bow on its head. It seems far too manufactured and forced to even suggest a sequel. Give me more Kojima but please no more Death Stranding

The problem with Saints Row is that old fans wanted to go back to Saints 1 and 2 which was a mixture of chappelle show humor with expanded gang elements of San Andreas. This new Saints Row is going to deliver on that but the characters in the trailer came off as super cringy. However, youtubers have seen 13 minutes of gameplay and are upset at volition for not letting the public see the gameplay like they have. The marketing team here fumbled, and they’ve been making up for it by answering questions on Twitter and letting everyone know that it is a gangster game still but that it’s an origin story and that the characters will change throughout the game

The good thing about the horizon update scenario will be you’ll have to pay full price for the easy platinum from PS4 to ps5.

Wayde

Paying full price for an upgrade is insulting. Not having 1 of the 2 collectors edition come with a physical copy of the game is pure fuckery. Plus the digital code most likely has the dlc so you can't just buy the physical copy and sell the digital version. I don't consider a bunch of digital items a collector's desire. I want physical items I can show case and if they are valuable in the future have the ability to sell Why even include a steel book with no game lmao. This reeks of the same crap that mass effect legendary edition cache that had a helmet, steel case and no game

Cole Barker

Lmaooooo at Dustin at the end

Caleb Greer

Great episode, however I really think you guys missed an important talking point about the Horizon news, which is that Jim Ryan said last year about the game, “…we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free.” https://twitter.com/andyplaytonic/status/1433494558462124035?s=21

Worth mentioning that Square has a Dragon Quest theme park and from what I've seen online, it looks pretty sick

The issue with the saints row reboot is we don’t know what we are going to get. Saints row leaned into the Shlock of being a campy over the top trip. They had weapons like the dubstep gun and Keith David as the Vice President in later games. The only concern I have is will the humor not be there and the dialogue will just be preachy bad modern humor. The plot sounds funny but will it be as funny as it could have been in 2011 remains to be seen. I’m open minded on it cause I haven’t played it yet.

Philip Andersen

I play online on PS5 without playing for PSPlus because the games i used to require pay online is somehow in the free section even tho the games isn’t free, like COD and FF14. I can pay for ps plus a month every year or so. It’s never been a must have for me.

NickBLeaveIt

I miss getting different kinds of smaller experiences that respect my time on PS Plus, like Thomas Was Alone or Valiant Hearts. While it didn't take a genius to deduce the "leaked" lineup was fake, Haven is the kind of game I miss getting on Plus. Hitman 2 is dirt cheap to buy used, whereas a lot of games have no physical version or are rarely on sale. And this month Games With Gold gets Mulaka. Sigh. In addition, this marks the first time the PS5 Plus game isn't new. Whether it was a new game debut or a PS5 version, up till now the PS5 Plus games have been debuts. Lastly, while I think enough people will preorder Kena so it doesn't need no stinking PS Plus boost, can I really say the same about JETT: The Far Shore? Is it indie developers arguing Sony doesn't pay enough, or is Sony "rationalizing" that "Our gamers want Overcooked cause we have numbers of high play count", and thus giving away Stray would be meaningless because "it won't be as frequently downloaded as Black Ops IIII"?

Philip Andersen

As for redemption story. FF14 was so bad they did took the game down, apologise, remade the game with a new director who was a MMO-fan and it’s a huge success now as of the most popular MMO.

I signed up for Playstation Plus the day it came out. Of course I add the monthly games to my library but that's not the main reason I have kept it. It's just essential to the PlayStation experience to have a robust reliable online network. Compared to how terrible it was when it was free compared to what the Xbox 360 offered it's worth the money.

Ryan Zimm

Dustin is crazy. Halo 4 was by far the best campaign of the series. I loved all the Masterchief and Cortana stuff. And none of the lame Flood or Gravemind nonsense. Halo 5's story was terrible...but the gameplay was actually super fun IMO

Jack Sibert

If Sony announces Bloodborne 2, I'll buy a (probably scalped 😥) PS5 that same day

Jack Sibert

Dustin- I gotta say that I was the exact opposite of you regarding Halo 4 When I originally played it I was very unimpressed and slightly disappointed. Now, however, I've come around on it. I find it to a very compelling sidestory to what the usual Halo fare was at that point in time. I now think that focusing on the ForeRunners as the main villian instead of the Covenant and Flood was a great idea- although I will grant that some of the forerunner enemy design left alot to be desired. I just think that lumping Halo 4 and Halo 5 together these days is a little ....well, un nuanced I want to give 343 props where they are due, and while I can't forgive them props for Halo 5, I think it's fair for Halo 4

LastStandMedia

It seems hard to believe that they could make a sequel compelling, but I'm not in the room. =)

LastStandMedia

I remain adequately confused about special editions not coming with the actual game, though I assume they're for digital purchasers...

Oliver Johnson

I thought that we didn’t need a sequel to Last Of Us and I was certainly wrong about that. I think Death Stranding has a lot of potential just by asking the question, “how does this world develop now that the States are reconnected?” I really don’t know how the gameplay will evolve but I think it’s such an interesting world and I’d love to see what happens next as it keeps spinning.

Felix Johnson

I don’t think Souls-like is necessarily about difficulty but rather the style of action game. The ability to respawn enemies at a “campfire”, Stamina, and some RPG elements sprinkled in. I consider Jedi: Fallen Order to be a Souls-like, but it doesn’t have the iron clad difficulty that people expect from something classified under that moniker. What’s annoying is you can ask anyone and we’ll all have a different idea on what Souls-like means. Not to mention a lot of Souls fans on the internet like to gate keep by what they find “difficult” Regardless games have always been labeled in obtuse ways with a lot left up to interpretation. I know some people will consider Souls or even early Yakuza titles a “JRPG” because they take the “Japanese Role Playing Game” title literally while others would consider South Park Stick of Truth and Rainbow Moon JRPGS because they’re clearly inspired by those types of games. Either way keep fuckin that chicken guys. Good show as always

The Eclectic Gamer

I don’t see an issue with a $10 upgrade, though do find the previously described $20 fee for the dual entitlement to be questionable. My question is why doesn’t anyone give flake to NBA2K22 and Call of Duty for charging $79.99 for cross-gen bundles? It is literally the exact same thing.

Cristian R

I actually think you can find “Metroidvania” as a category on Xbox.

David P

I fucking hate the name "soulsborne" as a naming for any subgenre. even metroidvania means something to me. it's even worse because after sekiro, people call it "souls sekiro borne." disgusting. I can't even imagine what forced term people will have after elden ring comes out.

LastStandMedia

I think it's nuts to charge someone $130 to buy a game on two consoles, in which one is an upgrade of the other released simultaneously.

The Eclectic Gamer

But that was never an option anyone needed to originally take. There was the $80 cross gen bundle (just like CoD and 2K do) if you bought the standard PS4 version for $60, then you are likely going to play it there and move on. If you are actively attempting to procure a PS5, then you’ll want to play it safe and get the cross gen bundle… not needed anymore though.

Clint

At my local theme park carowinds they have a Plants VS. Zombies ride. It was popular for about 3 months a few years back but now its super dead. Never a line and its mostly empty.

Kevin Cooper

I dunno... I think the Norman Reedus slip-up was an intentional Red Herring to distract from what's really going on with Abandoned/Silent Hills. As you say, Norman knows what's up with the games industry and his buddy-buddy relationship with Kojima is no secret. #TinFoilHat #ARG

I've been on a Halo replay as well and my experience with 4 was quite the opposite. I thought Halo 4 was considerably better than I remembered it being, even tossed the 360 version back in and was shocked by how good it looked even on the old console. Halo 5 not so much, it looked great, it played great, I enjoyed what I played of the multiplayer, I even thought the level design was decent with the branching paths and Uncharted-esque over the top sequences, but the overall story was very weak an the ending was a miserable rush job. Also I hated pretty much every character, even Buck who I had previously liked.
