In 2015, Sony quietly opened a brand-new, British first party team called Manchester Studio. Their charge? Make PSVR games. And so they did. Or, they tried to, anyway. Five years later, before even announcing their project or even leaving pre-production, the studio was shuttered, and now -- for the first time ever -- we know what they were working on and what went wrong. Their search-and-rescue virtual reality adventure sounds interesting, but leadership left much to be desired, and their execution was non-existent. So let's discuss. We'll also get into Call of Duty: Vanguard's proper reveal, chat about relics of The Last of Us: Part II's scrapped multiplayer functionality left in the game's code, wonder at the first-ever release of the original Quake on PlayStation hardware, and more. We'll also get into the mailbag, fielding your questions on topics ranging from emotion in our medium and the meaning of AAA to corporate consolidation and an unfortunate catastrophe concerning a Kit-Kat.

The answer to the question at 5.47 is a resounding no :)

Sacred Symbols is never too long in my opinion

MJ SKA BOI

Boys, Sacred Symbols is only too long if it is too long for YOU. Haven't listened yet, so I don't know the full context of that time stamp, but a major chunk of the work day is made more entertaining by listening to the SS crew. And when I say the SS crew I am of course referring to Sacred Symbols and not the other SS crew.

Rage.Quit_Richard

Length and girth are both equally important. Keep slinging it out boys

Stephen Forgione

Sacred Symbols is the perfect length, I get everything I need from gaming news/analysis for the week along with DD. Tbh the content cycle we have is ideal, and I don’t want to see it change for the foreseeable future.

Brian Comstock

I’m a big fan of Steve Wallis too! I love his stealth camping video’s especially. I’d love to sit down with him and have a step 2 one day.

Anonymous

It doesn't matter how long it is, it's the quality. If Helen Mirren puts out a ten second podcast of her taking a shit on Ostrich, it's ten seconds too long. You guys are shitting out 24k gold gents, so keep it coming and keep it long!

Cody Richter

I get the concern of missing out if you don't have the time to listen/watch a whole episode of SS but that's what the timestamps are for. That and the video clips on YouTube. I personally love the longer pods, they don't feel bloated or drawn out for no reason. I personally love the length, you guys keep me company at work and make my days go by quicker.

Anonymous

The lack of Hades talk this episode hurts my soul

Big titty drinker

Are you guys gonna play ultra age and baldo? Both look sick.

Julian Zhu

I stand with Colin -- I sleep the same way. Who else will rally behind him in this new culture war?

Anonymous

If Sacred Symbols is any shorter I'm gonna lose it! I work at least 8 hours a day, I want Sacred to fill as much of that time as possible. XD serious though, I'll love it at any length but am a fan of the longer form. Keep it up boys.

Madshibs

Colin talking about the Blue Box thing kinda reminds me of Tim Gettys explaining how The Grinch was definitely going to be the next Smash Bros. Fighter, just a lot more well-thought-out.

Raymond keys

Please do not shorten the show. I don’t think there is any unnecessary bloat or fluff. There is variety in the content so if I am not interested in a particular subject, I just skip it. Its that simple.

A Hind D

Keep the long podcasts !!!!!! Please

MJ SKA BOI

Haha Tim bought into that? I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain that theory originated from a shitpost on 4chan

Anonymous

Sacred Symbols is not too long at all. I work long, long hours every day of the week. Having SS to keep me company makes it much more bearable.

Jesse spivey

So blasphemy to the person who don’t break the Kit Kat right! Are you kidding me it’s has grooves to break but I agree with Dustin I bite right into pull & peel.

Max Stahl

I respect the girth.

Anonymous

I listen at 1.5x so there’s some shrinkage when these guys enter my ears

PuppiesOnParade

Here's my personal take on SS in regards to length, a few years ago I tried out this show as I was a fan of Colin during Beyond days. A few minutes in and there was nothing but poop jokes and stories pertaining to poop. I immediately turned it off and said, "Nope, not for me." Give it a few months, idk what caused me to want to try again, but I did. And the show hadn't changed a bit, but this time I enjoyed it. Gave a few months to really become a fan, and consequently became a patron. Now that the show has been averaging 3 hours, I'm grateful. I LOVE this show. It actually makes my day/week better just hearing what feels to me like old friends just shooting the breeze about the things I love. Go as long as the conversation takes. Each one of you brings so much to the table, it's all valuable to the fans. This is one of the best shows on earth, and I'll firmly stand by that statement. Thanks guys.

Jeff Caseres

Right off the bat, I agree Colin, I just listen to the whole podcast, any podcast while doing something else. Time stamps are for losers imo. 😝

LastStandMedia

Yeah, and we also can't really cater to people who are afraid to miss out. There's nothing we can do about that.

Madshibs

WASSAAAAHHP? I was listeningto you guys talk about the options that the Call of Duty series has with regards to campaign settings and the limitations thereof and I wondered: could you imagine a future where a Call of Duty game has a campaign that focuses on China (or some reasonable facsimile) being portrayed as the good guys and the bad guys are some stand-in for American/Allied forces? Do you think Activision would go that far to get that bittersweet Chinese money? Surely China would approve of a game that glorifies the Republic, even if the medium itself has recently been deemed a detriment to the youth of the nation. West, diehard COD fans would still buy the game almost out of habit and many casual gamers may not even care who the baddies are. Sure, some players might walk away in disgust, but as we’ve seen recently, the gaming community seems to be more Twitter bark than financial bite. Perhaps offsetting those losses with a billion Chinese consumers and pro-Chinese product might be worth it to money-hungry Activision. Do you think Activision would sell their American souls to China for profits, dividends and shareholders? Or would such an about-face be too jarring and amount to PR suicide and consumer backlash?

Michael Buffill

Sacred is never too long I always listen in full in one session and never feel like it was drawn out. Makes my work day more enjoybale.

Madshibs

I guess I’m an idiot because I always thought A, AA, and AAA came from the meat world. “A” is decent meat, “AA” is better quality and “AAA” cuts are high-grade, prime cuts. Either I’m wrong in my video game/butcher shop correlation or I have a fundamental misunderstanding the meat communities hierarchy of cow pieces.

LastStandMedia

Hey! If this is for the show, submit it on the weekly thread (posted Wednesdays for Sacred).

Dick McFarmhouse

Slight correction, well more of an FYI. CSAR is a military acronym which does indeed stand for Combat Search and Rescue. However, it’s pronounced SEE-SAR instead ZAR. No big deal but I figured I’d let you know. Keep crushing it gentlemen.

Wayde

Sacred symbols can never be to long. Now baseball games that's another story

Piston Pants

Seems like the show could just go about 25 minutes in length each week since all the comments are about something talked about in the first five. Plus we had tacked on filler before, it was called the drop.

Joe McPartlin

You and Micah should play It Takes Two. Playing through with my own girlfriend has been a joy

Napoleon in Rags

Chris! Thanks for bringing up It Takes Two! I’m playing very slowly through with my wife and this really is GOTY stuff. It’s strange for me to say that because I never, ever play my games with other people until this one came out. Colin, you and Micah will love this game…I promise 👌🏽

Anonymous

Playing the new Ghost of Tsushima content while listening! So far so good!

Brandon Soto

Dude, I love the Blue Box story. So many weird, yet fascinating points. But Sony / Konami really should address this situation. Just tell us if it’s Kojima, or Metal Gear or Silent Hill already.

Liam Mcnulty

Colin: "I'll put what I know about PlayStation against anyone" OK... What's Abandoned? 😂 Have you reached out to Geoff Keighley, or anyone else about it, and found out what it is? I'm not expecting you to tell us, but just curious if you know anything from reaching out. And FYI, I don't get tired hearing the weekly updates regarding Abandoned on the show, it's a lot of fun. Please keep talking about it! It's the highlight for me lol.

Derek Alcott

I hope Colin plays Hades soon. This show is something that I look forward to and the length is just right.

Greg Ohlenforst

Colin: "I don't know if I want Sacred Symbols to be that approachable" I love that this is his stance. In my opinion, there is an overabundance of other gaming podcasts/shows online that contain very sanitized, surface-level discussion catered to an often younger audience with shorter attention spans. Sacred Symbols is not that, and I'm glad it isn't. I feel that the show has only gotten better recently with the addition of Dustin (and the longer runtimes as a result).

Jamie Milligan

My heart bleeds for people that don’t have monotonous long hour jobs who don’t want long format podcasts because it’s too much. 😑

Otrant

To be clear, there are plenty of monotonous long hour jobs where you're not allowed to listen to podcasts.

Tom Cargill

A slight correction to Colin when saying that there having a single Black character in a ww2 unit is ahistorical. As far as I am aware, Britain didn't have segregated units like the US did. Not really a major issue, just thought I'd let you know.

TROTMAC96

I don't think Sacred Symbols is long enough. Like the saying goes: You can never have too much of a good thing.

Daddy Dilkers

Just chiming in to say I love how long the show is. I have a lengthy commute to work and love that Sacred Symbols lasts multiple to and from work drives.

Anonymous

No, I don't find it to be too long. I appreciate the work that goes into making each episodes. Like Dustin said, most people don't consume podcast in one setting...with one episode a week...I find length of SS to be just right

Avery Illies

Great episode as always guys! I have absolutely no issue with the length. 1) The episode should be as long as it needs, and 2) The episode can always be listened to in chunks, that's podcasting.

Anonymous

Love the podcast length, and especially enjoy the longer episodes. It usually means theres an interesting, in depth conversation taking place - and i can stretch it out throughout the week during commutes, dog walks, etc. The only thing I’d like to see now that there’s more content would be separate show feeds. Seeing more content in my feed and receiving more notifications is a little overwhelming - would be nice to filter and manage 🙂

Luke Silletta

If anything the show isn't long enough. I listen while I'm at work so if you could make it 8 hours that would be great!

Matt Wiles

Hades, Colin. You’re missing what I think may be your game of the year. It’s not the type of game I’d usually be interested in but I’ve fallen in love. It’s incredible and addictive.

Anonymous

Please do not make changes to the show's duration. It's as long as it needs to be and we love it. I do skip some segments that don't interest me now and then, but that's an exception and not the rule. Those of us who support on Patreon are indeed the next-level PlayStation nerds wanting a deep dive into Sony, PS, and the Video Game industry.

LE

You fight Chinese factions in battlefield 4 and battlefield 2042

Wayde

The difference between a loot box and trading cards is you actually have a physical item that you can resell and it's a collector's item from a collector's standpoint. Loot boxes provide no inherent value outside of the game itself and that's why I think it's considered gambling.

Anonymous

Colin, You said something in this episode about this podcast being primary for hardcore playstation gamers. I know you were just being general, but I wanted to let you know that I listen to Sacred Symbols (and SS+) every week, despite having not turned on my PS4 to play a game in probably a year, and before that I don't even know how long. I listen because I like to hear your collective takes on the industry and just because I like hearing you guys talk. Anyway, figured I'd throw that in there. I love everything that you guys do!

lazer_josh

The quality of discussion has only gotten better with legnth. I love the longer firm shows. I can only consume in 30 minute chunks because of my schedule so I really get a good value with a longer show.

LastStandMedia

No, Geoff wouldn't tell me so there's no point. Like I said: I reached out to Hasan directly, both publicly and privately.

LastStandMedia

Believe me, we would LOVE to have separate feeds. But that's not functionality that Patreon allows for. They know that's what we want, and some other 'high-end' Patreons are also pushing for it... but the reality is, it's not a feature that most users care about. It's a problem for us because we have a true business with a lot of moving parts here. We're growing faster than Patreon can accommodate. I hope that changes!

LastStandMedia

I bought it, I'm gonna play it, it's downloaded. I just don't wanna move forward until I beat the game I'm on.

Greg Mocha

Just a quick thought after listening to the loot box discussion, which was great. I've worked in the public service for the last 20 years as an IT manager for child and family services and now with an indigenous police service, so I've had first hand knowledge of families and youth in Ontario Canada. The majority of kids unfortunately don't have two parents available to them, it's roughly half of all kids have one parent here. And I would guess 75% of parents dont know how to use the xbox or ps4 for family controls. I've seen good kids so addicted to loot boxes they've stolen goods to buy xbox and Playstation cash cards to buy fortnite bucks. These don't require a credit card. I agree there should be gambling options but maybe if they forced all gambling purchases to use a credit card it would help. But as it is,you don't need a credit card. You can walk to Walmart and buy a Playstation store card. My thought is they don't want in-app purchases that bypass the store because they wouldn't get their cut.

NeO JD

Usually when I’m listening to this, I write notes and then pick whatever stands out most for the comment. This time, I scrapped the whole doc when I heard you never played Halo 3. This is a crime my friend, and I don’t know how Chris and Dustin let you get away with it. Let alone Dustin or Cog or even Micah. Please fix this asap. The soundtrack alone will be worth it.

Zack E

I would guess Sony wouldn’t want to endorse releasing games for such old hardware because of the implied customer service support. All of a sudden they may need to respect and handle PS1 support calls. From just my own perspective, the only case I think would be interesting is releasing the old games as new. I don’t really see why we would want new games to target the old hardware. Is there anything the PS1 can do that the PS5 can’t? Nothing is preventing a developer from making a very PS1-like game for a modern console. With that being said, it would be pretty fun if they did a release of “new” PS1 or PS2 units. Sort of feed the ecosystem some fresh official hardware to maintain the legacy gaming community. It pains me that all of these pieces of hardware will be incredibly unlikely to work within the next few decades

Sweeney's Girlfriend Archive

If you think the show is too long literally just pause and pick up where you left off next time.

The Eclectic Gamer

It was refreshing to hear Chris get through A Plague Tale and put some time into It Takes Two…the latter is definitely a top 3 game for me this year.

Anonymous

The Kit Kat/ twizler talk had be cracking up. Just turn the 3rd weekly sacred symbols episode into a bullshitting podcast like comedy button.

Brian Lau

I have no problem with the extra content since I also subscribe to the other pods from Colin's previous stops. With the extra + content, I've actually stopped listen to the other two. Great for LSM and bad for the others if I'm not the only one. Also love Dustin's Theranos reference. Just a minor correction, the founder is Elizabeth Holmes and she's not in prison yet.

LastStandMedia

It's true that they'd have to deal with more... but that seems to be neither here nor there if there's profit to be made.

MISZCZOGRZMOT

Dunno about Spyro, but I'm all for Naughty Dog taking a break from $200M cinematic experiences, and crafting a quick, fun, relatively low budget, Crash Bandicoot-like game. They've been neglecting the gameplay side of their titles for a while now - this could help them flex that muscle, and catch a bit of a breather, too. Who knows - with the talent there, it might just turn out to be a big seller.

Hoder Erroneus Jensen

I agree the shows can get a bit to long sometimes. I would prefer they were around 2 hours, or at least under 2½ hours. I appreciate when one of you just say: "X has covered it nicely, I don't have further to add. " I know you can pause and resume the show, I think most people do that, but it's simply a matter of time. I gotta follow tv-shows, play games, do sports, and go to work, and sometime even sleep, so it can be hard to fit in 3-4 hours of podcast also. Off course it's a tough thing to balance, as there should be room for the small banter. And on that note, the timestamps are really really important, because it let people jump to content they prefer, when I'm pressed for time, I often skip the intro talk and certain topics which I don't find interesting.

David Taylor

Not sure if anyone brought this up about Quake but ModernVintageGamer mentioned having worked on it for the last 18 months (I believe he specifically said the PS4 release) so it would have predated the Bethesda Xbox deal and may have had some kind of inked agreement. The PS and Switch versions are both getting physical releases while the Xbox version is not (so far) and the PS5 version is getting dualsense support so they at least are doing more than the bare minimum. That makes me think that deals with Sony and Limited Run Games were probably in place beforehand. Just speculation though. As for Skyrim, they just gotta put that on absolutely everything they can at this point to troll us, the more ports the better for the joke. They may also have more unannounced PSVR titles coming out, I wouldnt be shocked if they announce any more.

Jake Shapiro

Boys, don’t trip about the length of regular sacred symbols. Worry about the length of the two additional episodes per week

Anonymous

Colin math 😄 ‘adding Dustin makes it 30% longer’ - actually it should make it 50% longer (assuming Dustin is of equal value?!)! So even more of an excuse to keep the longer shows!

Anonymous

Dont make any of your content shorter. Please and thank you

Anonymous

I agree with the length critique. Since the podcasts have gotten longer and more have been added, I have been missing more podcasts and have listened to and completed fewer of them. I listen to JRE and other long form podcasts, but I wouldn’t say I care as much about finishing those as I do with SS. Like the guy said, though, that doesn’t seem to be the popular opinion so I guess do what the majority wants.

LastStandMedia

I still think this would be a waste of their talent, but if they wanna spin-off a team to do something small, that's fine. The question slowly becomes, what is a Naughty Dog game?

LastStandMedia

I think we will begin more earnestly not kicking things to the people who can't speak much to it. That may shave minutes off, or at least get us onto more pertinent topics. That said, I'd find it hard to imagine the show ever being two hours again, unless we're doing one-offs.

Anonymous

Jet Ski’s look fun, but are dangerous? Dustin, Dustin, Dustin… This made me do a double take because I have taken both my 9 year old and 7 year old on Jet Ski’s with me. So I was like wtf, is there something to this. While I agree Riding a motorcycle is dangerous and Darwinism in affect when not wearing a helmet, Jet Skiing is not dangerous. There are 40,000 automobile deaths a year and 40 jet ski deaths a year. I am pretty sure most of those 40 are folks doing stupid stuff like driving too close to shit and maybe not even wearing a life jacket. Dustin, if you are willing to walk out of your home, it will be ok to ride a Jet Ski.

Hoder Erroneus Jensen

I appreciate you listening to feedback, and it's genuine feedback, because the shows are great and you are guys are doing great, so it's a smaller gripe. Two hours is not realistic and that's okay, it doesn't have to be about you hitting an exact time, but more about cutting a small bit of the filler away. One example I can give, is eg. from this episode, where you spent 16 minutes on Abandoned. At this point, you have said everything there is to be said about Abandoned, and IMO that topic should have been covered in maximum 5 minutes. Sometimes it's okay to give an update about something you already have talked about, but if doesn't really change anything, move quickly on. Personally I skipped the entire Abandoned topic after 3 minutes of talk.

Eric S

Well on Christian’s comment there are times when I think a certain subject might go past my interest point. That is when I might hit fast forward 15 seconds once or twice and then I will resume listening. I don’t feel like any of it is wasting my time. I also think Dustin is a great addition and I really resonate many times with his opinion. I think in response the timestamps are there for a reason. Also Sacred Symbols is for the true PlayStation fan and gentlemen I salute you for feeding that need for me!

Jack Sibert

My take on amount of content Last Stand has been producing: I disagree with whatever grievances there are regarding the length of podcast episodes. I think the podcasts should and have been lasting for as long as they need to last. In other words- it seems natural to me. However, I do agree with what was said regarding the sheer amount of episodes and products that specifically Sacred Symbols is pushing out. I think less is more in this regard and flooding the channels with a higher volume of episodes (Sacred Symbols + and Sacred Symbols ++) is and will overall detract from the brands value over time. I tried continuing to watch Kinda Funny content after Colin left, but the daily show was just too much. Podcasts that adopt a more daily strategy just become less interesting over time for me because they end up TRYING to fill out the content with things that simply aren't worthy of the time and space. It didn't happen automatically, but gradually over time my interest in their shows just naturally died off because the potential value of each episode just seemed less and less. Personally, I would be most happy with one episode of SS every week and 2-3 episodes of SS+ every month. Of course- Defining Duke and Knockback will fill other niches and can operate within their own parameters

Jack Sibert

And side note- isn't Dustin like 25 years old or something like that? Wasn't he like 7 years old when Halo 2 came out? That's impressive that he was dreaming about a prospective M rated game launch

LastStandMedia

As I've said in a separate thread (so as to not fully repeat myself), I respect your feedback, but find this line of criticism hollow. SS+ has been a weekly show since it began. Now it's bi-weekly. Why would we take a show that's becoming more popular and reduce it? Just doesn't really make sense. SS+ twice a week allows us to do more, and gives you the OPTION to listen and enjoy at your leisure. I wish the creators I loved gave me as much as we give to our audience.

David Taylor

I don't mean just because it existed beforehand means it would still come to Sony, just that there may have been a deal with, at the very least, Limited Run Games if not Sony themselves that is still being honored (I doubt LRG would be publishing the phsyical copies of Starfield). I think it can be taken as fact that Starfield was in development for the PS5.
