Liberty, Vice, and Everything Nice | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 163

These slow summer days have been suddenly interrupted by a most-tantalizing rumor: PlayStation 2's classic trilogy of Grand Theft Auto games are migrating over to PS4 and PS5, reworked and modernized (though not remade!) for a new generation. Yes, it's true that GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are already natively playable on PlayStation 4, but in their stubbornly-old formats. Let's talk about returning to Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas in full, retro effect, and how excited we are to delve back in for all the fun and mayhem. Plus: Sony has officially acquired anime streaming giant Crunchyroll, timed PS5-exclusive shooter Deathloop has gone gold, the US Congress is looking to stomp-down on lootboxes and microtransactions, Focus Home Interactive grows its internal roster of studios, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is 2022 shaping up to be the craziest year in gaming history? Should Sony revive Massive Action Game? Is it possible (or even worthwhile) to boycott a game or a company without actually hurting it? Why does Colin sleep like Winnie the Pooh? Recently listened to the ‘Distant Horizons’ episode of Sacred Symbols. Colin gave a shout out to the Brookhaven Free Library on Bever Dam Rd. on Long Island. How he spent a lot of time there. Something about that name immediately sounded familiar to me. I opened up Google maps and typed in the name. The sight of that small early twentieth century house immediately brought back memories. I visited that library once in 2009. And that was to shoot an interview over Skype. It was for my first feature length documentary film Shoreham. My journalist collaborator, James (he was the one conducting the interview), chose the location. We were interviewing Rod Adams, a lifelong nuclear engineer for the Navy, and we were questioning him about the topic of the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant, and the topic of nuclear power in general. - Ray

That YouTube content outro music always gives me the best vibes, especially on Fridays!! God bless you Ramon!

LastStandMedia

Very cool. That's right where Dagan and I grew up, and around where many of our stories take place. Our sister Dana worked at that library, as well, from maybe 1987 until 1992 or so.

Dude, the Thumbnail meta is ON GAME!

Ok. So I’ll jump on this bandwagon for a minute. Booted up the Abandoned app and watched the infamous 4 second video. One thing no one has mentioned yet is the music.. out of curiosity, I pulled up the Silent Hill 1 intro theme song from YouTube. It sounded similar in scope. Acoustic guitars and the mandolin. Then, I played the 4 second trailer while listening to the theme song on my phone.. they are nearly the same musical keys. They overlap almost perfectly. I’m with you Colin.. this is Silent Hill through and through. Try it out! https://youtu.be/QEUS4uh4c4Y

They should bring back MAG and call it Massive Action Game Again. Just to watch people implode.

Raul Hernandez

Red Dead Redemption 1 remaster would be awesome, the second part of that game takes place mostly in Mexico. To this day I wonder how the heck did Revolver Ocelot make it to that small pueblo in that game. Lol

When I got covid in March 2020 the only thing that made me think it was covid was the persistent headache for 7 straight days haha. I'm also not a headache guy so that threw me for a loop!

"Naruto To Boruto" is pronounced Naru-toe toe Bore-ooh-toe. Toe not to.

Banging episode title and thumbnail 👌

This is top tier thumbnail work 😂

Andrew Gambill

I'm not an anime fan but I love Naruto. It's always made me cringe hearing Colin butcher the pronunciation.

Some loot box systems are worse than others. Games like FIFA have constant promotions going on and if you’re not a great player you will not keep up without spending money. Even then it is luck of the draw on whether you’ll pick up a good player. Then there’s the likes of COD (technically you could say it isn’t a kids game) that I believe has been shown to put none DLC weapon players into lobbies that have high skilled players with DLC weapons, making the low skilled player feel like they need to invest in the new ‘better’ guns. Parenting is the main issue with kids but these loot boxes really do impact everyone and it’s mostly negative. Chris is right, the ‘no loot boxes’ being there as a positive just shows where we are at.

LastStandMedia

I really don't have an issue with lootboxes so long as it's not a mandatory interaction with the game.

can't believe you said deathloop is like persona there's not even a talking cat
