Through Smart Delivery, a once scoffed at service, Xbox has managed to make the implementation of next-gen updates to current games easier for the consumer. With it being as simple as sliding in your disc, the newest series of consoles now plays the best version of the game automatically. PlayStation enables this as well, but there are some more hoops to leap through. Likely due to this, they have sidestepped the competition with their own form of double dipping. This is the Director's Cut movement beginning with Ghost Of Tsushima and Death Stranding, but most certainly will fall into other games both recent and old. The conversation that Cog and Matty bring you is simple. Is this a conversation we're having because of Smart Delivery simply doing its own thing free of charge? Should PlayStation fans need to pay $10 for minor mechanics like adaptive triggers and the expected 4K 60 FPS targeted updates? Together with your feedback, we go through all the perspectives on this sticky situation that will only grow.

Big titty drinker

Matty people should have to pay 10 for the upgrade. It's a native ps5 game at that point and includes the the dual sense feature which are transformative to the experience of playing the game. Also there are many free upgrades given out by sony Tlou 2 , Gow, Ghost already had free 1800 p and 60 target boost plus an entire multiplayer added after the fact. Having to pay for dualsense features is fine by me becuase honestly it's the only " next gen " thing I have seen Ethier company do. Trying to write it off as "minor" is something I disagree with. 10$ is minor dual sense features tailored specifically for a game are not. If you dont think the features are worth 10 bucks just buy the ps4 version and dont pay for it. The price and value conversation is getting annoying it's the only area where xbox is competitive so I feel like people are making mountains out of mole hills to highlight it. Which is pretty corny.

I have no problem spending 10€ extra on a game like Death Stranding Directors Cut. The extra content and work that goes into these upgrades are worth spending some money on I think. Still, I would prefer it to be free and you can clearly see Sony trying to squeeze a little more out of these (really good but older) games.

During the credits in what I guess is pre-recorded Colin he still says “ACG as the host” after Matty is he just waiting until next month to do a new pre-recorder credit with LORD COG as the host?

It’s important to note that Smart Delivery doesn’t mean the upgrades are free. There’s paid games that use SD. SD is just about simple save transfers and the console you’re on knowing what to play. Sony doesn’t have that, while also charging for some upgrades 🥴

it's the ghost of Tsushima one that's egregious, $10 for haptic feedback is crazy and if EA or Ubisoft did it, way more people would be complaining

Death Stranding doesn't seem like minor updates to me...(maybe I am easily impressed and I enjoyed the game immensely). Ghost updates for $10 seems like a stretch but I played through it once and don't plan on another play through, so I won't be purchasing it. Speak with your wallet, nobody is forcing players to upgrade. And if you haven't played through before and don't care about the extra content just purchase the PS4 versions.

For an Xbox podcast you sure do spend a fuck load of time talking about PlayStation… 🧐

Outside of the dualsense features and the expansion, a lot of these upgrades are basically high/ultra PC settings. I’m certainly not buying it, but I see what the issue is. Plus it’s july, news is slim rn so I don’t really blame this being a topic.

Hey Cog, just a correction of "the problem you have" with GoT upgrade. There is not a $10 upgrade only option for base GoT. If you want the native PS5 game you need the Iki island expansion. There is no base GoT SKU for PS5. On the charging aspect I'm fine with it as they are giving us the option without charging us existing owners of base PS4 version full price for the next gen features (not the 60 FPS boost as that was free for GoT anyway) ala Nintendo game pricing strategy.

Just wanted to chip in and say this was a really good episode boys. I know people get sensitive around this stuff but the most important thing is that you speak candidly about it, which I appreciate. Keep up the good work 👍

I think the smart delivery argument is more about how Save Transfers are handled between Sony and MS, which I feel is blow a little out of proportion but Smart delivery is the better service. Directors Cuts are just “Game of the Year” or “Complete “ editions. It gets more bracketed because Ghost has a lot of new and bigger seeming content than Death Stranding for instance, and I’m guess Sony didn’t want to overprice Death Stranding since it’s not really a game that sold that well so they’re just staying with $10. Ghost does have a free upgrade for visuals/performance already, just no PS5 hardware features.

Great episode guys, really good points with a great flow

It's hard to talk about Xbox since most of the games are a year away.

Shawn Hayden

2k21 had a free next gen upgrade at every sku. Most games have had free next gen upgrades. I don't see your argument at all.

Shawn Hayden

This. They're talking like smart delivery gives you the next gen version no matter what, and that's not the case.... It works the same way, just with a snazzy marketing term behind it. This whole episode is laden with misinformation.

Shawn Hayden

Plague tale on ps5 is the plus game this month. You didn't even need the ps4 version to get the new one. How is that worse? If you're going to be critical at least pick things that have some sort of base in reality.
