Returnal Review and Story Discussion | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 101

PlayStation 5's most unusual game is also one of its most critically-acclaimed to date. Returnal -- developed by one-time second party (and now fully-owned) developer Housemarque -- is the culmination of 25 years or so of rock-solid arcadey goodness. But the team that revolutionized the twin-stick shooter and modernized score-chasing walked away from both for their highest-budget game yet, a title with a dense story and a recurring series of worlds where you, as astronaut Selene, try to escape a mysterious and galactic purgatory. It's a journey worth delving into, and to do so, we brought games industry lawyer and friend-of-the-show Rick Hoeg on to accompany us on yet another trip to Atropos. Big titty drinker

Aye new post who dis! I dont think the game is as hard as most people do honestly. I died maybe 9 times ( 2 were crashes) in about 80 hours. I think as long as you play strategically and dont rush and understand the way the game world works you can really bus this games ass. By the way I definitely like it better for spoiler cast to dissect lore and story beats as oppose to it being a review

On the flip side, rushing is a viable strategy once you get used to how the game works. It's actually more beneficial to rush as the RNG can ruin a longer run.

Hey guys, you tagged this as SS+ rather than SS+ video like usual

Colin, I also had trouble with one of the glyphs in Crimson Wastes and what eventually solved it for me was running the fortress section of the level backwards. I had run the level about 70 times with the normal path and somehow never came across the final rare spawn room that has the glyph. I then saw the video below and only had to run it backwards about 3 times before the glyph spawned. This was by far the most frustrating part of the platinum for me. Hopefully this solution will work for you too so you can platinum, delete, and never play again!

This is my game of the year so far. I got the platinum trophy yesterday because of the patch finally fixing a glitched trophy that you couldn't get unless you started from scratch. With the patch all I had to do was fight Ophion again. Pretty cool they they addressed an issue like that so I didn't have to lose all my progress.

I’ve had a really odd experience with this game. I’m really bad and struggled just to get past the first biome. When I finally beat Biome one, I felt so satisfied that I had no desire to continue playing it. This is definitely a me problem, but I never got that feeling in other rogue lites like dead cells or curse of dead gods.

Really glad I decided to listen to this, despite putting the game down in the second level. Finding out that they don't actually answer anything bluntly, I don't regret getting the spoilers. I'll experience it myself someday, I was enjoying the game, but now just isn't the time for me to focus on it. Great show, Colin. Get Rick back as often as possible, he's the fuckin man and always makes for a great show. It was nice to hear him focus 99.8% on games rather than "hey come on and talk lawyer shit." He's genuinely great in both roles.

I'm not a skilled gamer at all, even as a kid I never really related to the idea of "Beating" a game, I'm more into RPGs. Nowadays, more and more, it seems the games with the most astounding visuals and esoteric stories are ones that are incredibly difficult. it annoys me, but you guys have convinced me to at least give it a try. I will definitely check it out if I find it on sale.

This is my GoY too. And Inspired me to get the Plat. I think it was about a Mom/Astronaut that was tired of her kid (single Mom) and not able to travel in space because of this obstacle

This was the hardest platinum for me yet. This game was such a wild ride. Initially I didn't even liked Returnal all that much. But there was something about it that just kept luring me back, like a siren beckoning me to crash head first onto the shoreline rockbed. it almost made me feel a masochist

Just got my PS5 (finally) and this was the first game I got. Love it. Still only on the second area but I have to listen to this now. Too hyped about it.

Lots of great insight from the lads on this one - especially from Rick! Loved the way he dived way deep into the games little intricacies. Felt like I learnt a ton of new things about Returnal today.

Also just wanted to chime in with an interesting tidbit since you guys talked about the game's resolution near the end there. There was an interview done where the devs mentioned that the game did indeed run at 1080p initially and the art director decided to stick with this lower resolution because he preferred the more atmospheric/blurrier look for the game.

BlindRiot

Hoeg and Moriarty, the new chocolate and peanut butter. Excellent cast!

I love the way you put it: Esoteric, weird shit typically does require more of the player. There's no doubt.
