Analyzing Xbox at E3 2021 | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 98

Sony may have opted-out of the yearly June festivities, but its archrival Xbox sure didn't. Microsoft showed up with bells on, discussing around 30 games, some exclusive and some not, some timed and others day-and-date, and even some next-gen products, too. Starfield has a release date (and no, it's not coming to PlayStation 5), Halo Infinite seems primed for this holiday, Arkane is working on a new franchise called Redfall, and more. Oh, and it's pretty much all coming to Game Pass. Welp! Let's chat.

Chris saying Disturbed did a good Sound of Silence filled me with a rage I did not know existed

I agree with the trailer comments. Personally I think E3 needs to be concerned with the upcoming year of games and nothing that is so far out you just get a trailer or even worse just a logo with a year under it.

I think the new line going forward may be "Sony has no fridge".

I don't understand why Colin is worried if Gamepass itself is profitable today? Doesn't it seem clear the goal of Xbox is to grow Gamepass exponentially, as they are going to integrate it directly into televisions. This is just the beginning. They are almost certainly taking a loss right now, but it's an investment and that is expected.

Colin, It appears that Flight Sim 2020 is also next-gen only. You will only be able to play it via xCloud on an Xbox One. This is a new strategy for MS. MS plans to put out more next-gen games on Xbox One via xCloud: "For the millions of people who play on Xbox One consoles today, we are looking forward to sharing more about how we will bring many of these next-gen games, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, to your console through Xbox Cloud Gaming, just like we do with mobile devices, tablets, and browsers." So, I will probably be able to play Starfield, Perfect Dark and Fable on Xbox One via the cloud. This is a neat way to circumnavigate this awkward cross-gen period where 2022 Sony games need to support old hardware while 2022 Xbox games do not (necessarily - we will see how strongly this strat will be employed). https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/06/13/xbox-and-bethesda-games-showcase-recap/

Hey Chris, are you going to pick up Aragami 2? It seems like your kinda game with the stealth and all. Cheers, Chepe

Contraband feels like our only opportunity at a new game remotely similar to the Getaway

Mason M

“Lockmort is a huge…stalker”

Shawn Hayden

If it works as good as Psnow, I won't need to upgrade my one x for awhile it seems

Ib Saint

The Forza part of Xbox e3 was in my opinion, the best part of the conference.

...and skipped from 57:45 to 59:03 :D

I don't know why people keep telling me I'm worried that Gamepass isn't profitable. Why the fuck would I be worried about that? I'm simply saying it isn't. And that's a relevant thing when a company much smaller than Microsoft tries to replicate it.

Starfield, Stalker, Contraband, Plague Tale Requiem, Slime Rancher 2, Shredders, Outer Worlds 2, Flight Simulator, and Red Fall are all Series S/X exclusives

LastStandMedia

Stalker, Plague Tale: Requiem, Slime Rancher 2, and Shredders will all come to PlayStation.

Yes, sorry I wasn't clear with my wording. Meant in the the showcase they made zero mention of Xbox One. A lot more next gen exclusives on the horizon. A good thing for both PS5 and SeriesS/X

The Lizard King

I have a series S and a PS5. I’m not sure what it is but I will use Gamepass for exclusives such as Halo etc but the likes of Hades which will be available day one on gamepass and for a price on PS5, I will play it on PS5. I can clearly see that there’s no logic in that but I just have a different feeling when playing my PS5 to Xbox. I can’t explain it. Trophies are a factor I guess?

Brannon H

It's quite humorous whenever Chris mentions skills based and competitive based games when he struggles and/or can't beat games like Returnal and From Software games

Maybe it's just me being frugal, but I've never been able to understand that mentality. It's probably just me not caring that much about trophies or achievements. I just don't like spending money I don't have to I guess.

I’m a long time Playstation fan and as long as they keep making games like The Last of Us and God of War (which I’m sure they will) I will buy their systems and their games. However, Microsoft is doing an incredible job because for the first time ever I want to get in on the Xbox side of things too. I think everyone’s going to be eating this generation.

Anonymous

name me a single game that you really want to play on Xbox ?

Anonymous

It would be easier for me to tell you want I want to play on Playstation (For now). Horizon and GoW full stop. My PS4 (now PS5) has been an exclusive machine pretty much since gamepass launched.

Colin talked about all these people gaming the system for Gamepass, but I would say those aren't the average consumer. That always seems to be overlooked. I have plenty of friends who game, but aren't as dialed in as myself and also parents who swear by Gamepass' value for $10-$15 dollars a month. They put their CC info in and just let it ride. Great episode gents.

BlindRiot

Sony needs to step it up in the games variety department, over the shoulder third person is fun…but it can’t be all that you’ve got anymore.

LastStandMedia

I have no real preference; I'm an analyst, first and foremost, and I just want to see what they're going to do.

To me, the original Xbox and PS2 had very different libraries. Morrowind, Jade Empire, Fable, KOTOR vs FFX, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, etc. It’s almost as if the Xbox series X and PS5 are going to be more similar with OG Xbox/PS2 than the Xbox One/PS4 generation.
