The Model of Perfect Health | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 148

PlayStation is booming. Recent financial results from Sony prove it, countervailing the prevailing wisdom about the brand's shortcomings. The reality is stark: PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling home console of all-time so far, even under severe supply constraints. Meanwhile, more games have now been sold for PlayStation 4 than any gaming hardware, ever, and PlayStation made nearly twice as much in revenue as rival Xbox over the last fiscal year. They're very much in the black, with billions in profit to show for it. So what does this all mean? Well... it means we need to give Sony a lot more credit than we've been providing in recent weeks, so let's remedy that. Let's also cover the other news, as it presents itself. Ideas for The Last of Us III are percolating at Naughty Dog, PS5 launch game Godfall looks like it's getting a PS4 port, old LittleBigPlanet games have apparently been in a non-functioning state for quite some time now, Sony filed new trademarks for PlayStation Home and Soho Engine, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is the key to accepting a $70 price point the launch functionality (or lack thereof) of modern games? Can you host industry events, galas, and the like, and be an objective critic? Has a game ever been so good that it's ruined everything else for you? Is Colin lying about his lack of a sweet tooth? I cannot stand the water slander. It's the only beverage in the world that goes with everything. Pasta and water is bad? What else do you drink with pasta besides wine?

Justin O'Reilly

I definitely agree with you guys in regards to the coverage of "blind spots" such as Gran Turismo. I don't think there's any value in you all forcing yourselves to play and speak about a game that you don't enjoy or don't have expertise in. Though, I will say that I appreciate that a site like IGN can rotate employees onto their shows to talk about specific games that the usual hosts aren't familiar with. Maybe you could find a middle ground and invite guests on to discuss certain games. Maybe a Balan Wonderworld spoilercast?

Michael Miller

Nex Machina is based on Robotron :D

2:21:35 You can have it both ways. You do it and then you act like it's not a thing and keep doing it, it's very common, it's called delusion.

Hey Colin, I'm regards to TLOU part 3, do you not think this could be a perfect opportunity to show Joel's missing 20 years in some way? They might Godfather 2 it, where half the movie is a flashback to Don Corleone after he died in the first movie and the other half is his son after the first movie. They could do that with this game. Joel is dead, but TLOU is Joel, they could have present day stuff going on with Ellie that ties in thematically to what Joel got up to in those missing 20 years. It'll be a way to keep Joel in the series without retconning his death or having a cheesy hallucination for Ellie to talk to lol.

Kam Wallis

The MLB players in the PS Studios logo is the same for the PS4 version, so I don't think it's a MS deal or anything like that.

Kenny C

Excellent show guys, everyone was on fire...even Chris. Hope you enjoy Returnal, maybe a bit too brutal for me. Have a good weekend.

Daniel Vacura

I do think that we will get something in regards to Ellie’s mom’s story with future Last of Us content. Neil Druckmann has mentioned it many times and that’s the new thing that I could see in the remake or a future Last of Us 3. The two protagonists would be Ellie’s mom and Ellie in 3 to show their dichotomy.

My feed just deleted the episode as I was listening to it? On Apple? Now I can’t find it to re listen to it? Anyone else have this issue?

Michal Dudic

chris has absolutely been on point. great show, men.

Nicholas ONeill

I dont post on Twitter Colin but in response to your message to your fans. You are the man. You have built something fantastic in LSM and we are all proud to be part of it.

Matt Matlock

Quick correction. Jedi Fallen Order is running on Unreal Engine, not Source, like Titanfall 2 does. It’s cool EA let’s Respawn use whichever engine they please, considering they force most of their studios to use Frostbite.

Hose A Contra Razz

I don’t know if it matters but containers are being sold to people to built homes all over the world

Colin, you have built something truly amazing and I’m happy to support it in a small way each month. It’s a testament to everyone that’s a part of LSM the success you’ve had without relying on industry access. I was resistant to Dustin joining SS at first, but I think the 3 of you have developed good chemistry, and it usually makes the episodes a little longer which I am all for!

Zack Fair

Colin, do you think with the conditions of acquiring silicon chips for this Gen will increase the longevity of these consoles until we see a PS6/Xbox etc. Keep up the great work guys!!

Danny Akenson

Hey, Colin. Just thought I'd provide some context. Tolkien's legendarium is the body of J. R. R. Tolkien's mythopoeic writing that forms the background to his The Lord of the Rings, a high fantasy novel which is widely considered to be his magnum opus. The origins of Tolkien's legendarium dates back to 1914, when he began writing poems and story sketches, drawing maps, and inventing languages and names as a private project to create a unique English mythology. He composed the earliest story drafts in 1916 (some of which were published in 1983's The Book of Lost Tales) and continued to expand, revise, and rewrite these mythological and cosmological works for most of his adult life, a period spanning almost half a century. The Hobbit (1937), his first published novel, was not originally intended to be part of the larger mythology but was eventually incorporated into it. Both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (1954 and 1955) took place in the Third Age of Middle Earth while virtually all of his earlier writing had been set in the first two ages of the world - learned characters in The Lord of the Rings occasionally allude to key figures and events from the larger legendarium, but such ancient tales are depicted as being remembered by few until the events of the story make the old legends relevant. While the canonical form of Tolkien's narrative is often called "Middle-earth" after the setting of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and a few short stories, this region is only one location of many for the events of the legendarium, which cover many thousands of years and describe a fundamental reshaping of the world. The success of The Lord of the Rings inspired Tolkien to return to his older sketches and stories with the intention of revising them into publishable form. However, the legendarium project was still incomplete at the time of his death in 1973. Tolkien's son Christopher chose portions of his late father's vast collection of unpublished material and shaped them into The Silmarillion (1977), a semi-chronological and semi-complete narrative of the mythical world and its origins. Since then, many volumes of Tolkien's stories and story drafts regarding his legendarium have been published; some presented as completed tales, and some illustrating Tolkien's long creative process by analysing his many revisions and rewrites. Tolkien research, a continuing examination of Tolkien's works and supporting mythology, became a scholarly area of study soon after the author's death and has continued to develop in the decades since. The First Age began with the awakening of Men in Hildórien, and ended with the overthrow of Morgoth. The First Age was also known as the Elder Days. Overview It lasted about 587 years. It ended with the final overthrow of Morgoth by the combined armies of Valinor and Beleriand, after the voyage of Eärendil. Map of Beleriand, the regions northwest of the familiar later "Middle-earth" J.R.R. Tolkien describes primarily the events of the First Age that occurred in Beleriand. These were centered on a series of wars waged by the Sindar, the Ñoldor and the Three Houses of the Edain (Mankind), against the power of Morgoth. The wars had actually begun during the Years of the Trees, but began again with renewed fury after the arrival of the Ñoldor in Beleriand. There had been Elves in Beleriand for uncounted millennia, but they sought merely to exist, and Morgoth had little to do with them. The Ñoldor, on the other hand, particularly the Sons of Fëanor, had come with the express purpose of defeating Morgoth. Timeline Year Events 1 The Sun first sets sail. Awakening of Men in Hildórien. (According to legend, Men now lose the gift to die at will as the result of divine punishment, and are doomed to lead short life-spans at the end of which death takes them by force.) Not true, According to The Silmarillion, based on Tolken's notes, Men were intentionally created with shorter life spans because the life span of Elves were unending. 64 Turgon begins building Gondolin. 65 Finrod builds the tower of Barad Nimras ("White Horn Tower") on a cape of the Falas between Brithombar and Eglarest. c. 102 Founding of Nargothrond. Finrod is slain by a werewolf, but Beren is rescued by Lúthien. 466 Beren and Lúthien achieve the Quest of the Silmaril. Beren dies, and Lúthien abandons life. Maglor begins raising Elrond and Elros. 545 to 587 The War of Wrath. Morgoth is cast into the Void. Most of Beleriand is sunk. The Sea of Helcar is drained through the Great Gulf. The plateaus of Mordor, Khand, and Rhûn rise from the former seabed. The remaining two Silmarils are stolen by Maedhros and Maglor but are lost in the earth and in the sea. The elves are summoned to Valinor and settle on Tol Eressëa. Galadriel refuses the summons and is still banned. A small part of the Ñoldor remain in Lindon. Many Sindar depart east and establish realms, under Oropher. Chief Battles of this Age The Dagor-nuin-Giliath, so named because it was fought before the rising of the Sun) was fought soon after the arrival of the Ñoldor. Morgoth sent a raiding party from Angband to attack the Ñoldor encampment in Hithlum, but the elves drove it back. Fëanor was killed. It is considered the second battle in the Wars of Beleriand, after one that took place during the Years of the Trees. Morgoth Bauglir, Enemy of the World and the first "Dark Lord" The Dagor Aglareb was fought about seventy-five years after the return of the Ñoldor. Morgoth again attacked the Ñoldor, and (again) with no success. The Ñoldor became so bold as to besiege Angband. However, the Siege was of limited effectiveness, because the northern side of Angband on the north side of the Ered Engrin, and was unapproachable to the Elven forces. The Dagor Bragollach began when Morgoth poured rivers of fire out of Angband, ruining the besieging Ñoldorin armies. The Ñoldor eventually mustered a defense, but their losses were severe. For instance, the green plain of Ard-galen had been permanently laid waste by the rivers of fire, and was now called Anfauglith, the Choking Dust; and the highlands of Dorthonion, which had been inhabited by Edain, were made inhospitable. The Nirnaeth Arnoediad was the first battle to be started by the Ñoldor for the purpose of ending the power of Morgoth. They massed an army composed of Elves, Edain, and the Easterling houses of Bór and Ulfang allied to the Sons of Fëanor. The Elves and their allies came very close to Angband, but Morgoth's trickery had upset their battle plan, and Ulfang proved to be treacherous. The name "Unnumbered Tears" comes from the fact that the Elves' last hope of victory was destroyed. The land of Hithlum was lost, the Sons of Fëanor were largely scattered, and the free peoples of Beleriand had been decimated. The forces of Morgoth made a heap of the Elven and Mannish dead in the center of Anfauglith. The War of Wrath took place after Eärendil sailed to Valinor and persuaded the Valar to help those whom they had forsaken. The Valar gathered an army comprised of Maiar, Vanyar, and those Ñoldor who had stayed in Valinor. The Teleri refused their aid, due to the Kinslaying at Alqualondë, but consented to ferry the armies of the Valar in their famous ships. This battle marked the first appearance of the winged dragons, most notably Ancalagon the Black, but the Valar had the day. Morgoth was captured, and cast out of Arda, but his lands, as well as most of Beleriand, had been destroyed and sunk under the sea in the heat of battle.

I would love for Sony to move just a few inches from third person, stealth’ish’ action. It’s just getting old.

BlindRiot

Somebody’s gotta say it, Greg Miller & Tim Getty’s are a pair of ignoble coward…in addition to that, Kinda Funny’s become just a marketing arm of the major publishers. I mean c’mon, doing a review and then hosting a spoiler discussion with that same games devs, not to mention hosting E3. The entire scenario is entirely inappropriate.

BlindRiot

So I’m Puerto Rican & Sicilian, does that make me some kind of Mascot for Sacred Symbols? Maybe a deal breaker, but my head is not nearly as spherical as Dustins.

@Colin - while most of us agree with your response to potential conflicts of interest in the games media space, I think it was a mistake to use Greg as an example (even if the listener was the one to write the comment). Greg/KF did a great job with their TLOU2 coverage last year - which I’m sure you didn’t listen to, but I think should at least make you think twice before being critical. Early access to the game allowed them to confirm it was good with their audience and reassure that none of that spoiler stuff mattered. (i.e being able to say yes, you should go buy this day one - it’s that good) Industry access (assuming w/ Sony PR) set up some incredible conversations with Neil, Troy, Ashley and Laura about how the game was made, the story and the controversy, etc. That shit is so cool, and really adds another level to game discussion. Finally, they were able to do all of that while literally sharing the same criticisms you/Chris had about *summarizing* the length of the game and how “in your face” the story can be while it’s trying to make its point. Accepting gifts from companies you review games from is weird, but most of us are okay with it if we trust people like you (and Greg) to still be real with us at the end of the day in your coverage. Even beyond that, I think you’re underrating your audiences ability to “take it with a grain of salt” and enjoy/consume content for what it is. You all do a great job here with the work you do, but those sort of comments feel like a disservice to the industry and folks who are also doing good stuff.

LastStandMedia

It's just an impossible standard to hold ourselves to. Now that we've widened our net with platforms and have drafted Matty and Karak, we have more opportunities to touch on more things deeply. Matty and I doing an Outriders spoilercast this week is an example.

LastStandMedia

Could be. It's an interesting point; will these ever get better, to where you'd even want to regularly release consumer hardware?

superbadisfunny .

Loving the show of course. I did however wanted to ask why is it looked at so differently with next gen titles on console from pc? I see no problem with God of War being on ps4 and ps5. Ps5 being a more enhanced version. Games on pc look and play differently depending on the hardware. You can have an incredible high resolution, high frames, better AI experience to a lower experience so why can't it be the same for ps4 and ps5? I just don't understand why ps4 owners have to be cut off to please ps5 owners

Anonymous

For sure. And the fact that you can be honest about that and have a transparent conversation with your audience continues to build that trust. Just sticking on the example of your friendship with Neil, it seems like that relationship has generated so many interesting insights to some of the major topics that you cover. IMO from an audience perspective, I think that's totally worth it even if it means the way you talk about his work is subconsciously affected.

Nygile Oliver

I'm actually very glad you guys dont play games you aren't interested in, that type of stuff leads to hosts speaking definitely on genres they dont know/care about, and theres way more than enough of that with games media and other games figures smh, take care guys

P Neal

Even my daughter is getting used to the log off and resting on ps5 vs ps4

P Neal

The last tomb raider had a different ending for anyone who was not connected to the internet.

Zero Hedge is great. Check out Seeking Alpha too. Really interesting points of view.

LastStandMedia

I still think there is aiming to the lowest common denominator. We do it at my own studio. Every game runs on the lowest hardware first.

LastStandMedia

I read a little Seeking Alpha when I see it pop up, but I'm not familiar with it as a publication apart from that.

JusticeSoulTuna

With all due respect Colin and cast, it is STILL impossible for the average consumer to get a PS5 here in the UK. Neither myself, nor my friends or known acquaintances have a PS5. And quite a few of us have been trying. The only people I see with PS5s are influencers and a few very lucky people. I use websites like Stock Informer and keep multiple tabs bookmarked which I check damn near everyday. Sometimes I catch them on sale at GAME (UK retailer), Very, Argos and others, and I get stuck in a digital queue for over an hour, only for them to say sold out once I get to the page. It's currently June 2021 and this is STILL the same story, and I've been trying since launch. Mind you; I managed to get lucky and snag a Series X back in April, but no PS5. Saying that anyone who wants a PS5 should have one by now is grossly unfair.
