Home Cooking | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 165

Depending on who you are, who your parents are, when and where you grew up, and many other factors, your experience eating at home as a kid was... well... different. We Moriartys were quite lucky, indeed: Italian Long Islanders with an extended family of talented cooks constantly putting delectable treats in front of us (carbs, especially). But some of you out there... well... you may not have been as lucky. So let's explore stories of eating at home, of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, or beloved meals and loathed options. Was your mom a better cook, or your dad? Maybe your grandparents? There's much to discuss. Just one thing: Don't go into this episode on an empty stomach. This is the perfect episode because most people celebrated Easter yesterday

That Parmesan cheese story related to your mom reminded me of my own mom with peanut butter: I told her that I thought Reese’s brand peanut butter tasted better than Jif, so my mom would buy Jif (which was cheaper) and put it in the Reese’s container in the cupboard. I had no idea until my brothers told me 15 years later! Great episode!

Who would have thought that Dagan was the one fucking that chicken this whole time

It's great to now get the "ohhhh" in video formats now. Also a great subject and so many relatable parts. My parents divorced when I was 9 so the big dinner scene took a hit early on. Dagan looking great. Today's Vita play along game is Gravity Rush.

Glad my salad comment made the podcast. Perfect palate cleanser after a perfect meal

It was so like that for me, as a kid I always wanted the fast food or restaurant meals. Now I'm always looking forward to Sunday dinner for my mom's home cooked Italian meals or backyard steaks.

I loved my mom's meatloaf. But I think meatloaf sandwiches afterwards are even better!! Maybe, how it holds up for sandwiches depends on how it was made.

Hey, gentlemen! Thanks for answering my question and I appreciate your attempt to pronounce my first name. Don't worry about mispronouncing it. You're not the first, haha! Duy in Vietnamese (South) is pronounced "zwee" but I've also heard "yoo-ey" in a different dialect. Thanks again!

Dagan, I understand your complaints about meatloaf. However, all of the complaints you bring up are exactly why I set out to make what I consider to be the perfect meatloaf recipe, which includes slow cooking in a smoker. One issue I’ll address is the dryness. How I get around that is by using fatty beef that I grind myself, but I have to cook it to a temperature far beyond what you would expect from a medium-rare steak. This is key, because once it reaches a certain temp, that extra fat will render down and add juice to the loaf. All I’m saying is don’t give up hope. The perfect meatloaf is out there.

Something I heard from a classmate once: Baking is a science. Cooking is an art.

Great ep. Needed it today, just had to say goodbye to my Grandpa so a family, food oriented ep really hit the spot. Cheers M bros ✌🏻

In the South, we call it grilling. Barbecue uses barbecue sauce. :) Editing: Well, I posted before getting to that point of the episode. Lol.
