The words are hard to type, but they must be typed nonetheless: Sony is pulling the plug on PlayStation Vita. Beginning in late August, you won't be able to buy any games anymore (though you'll still be able to download what you own). The same goes for PlayStation 3, though its ignominious date comes even sooner, in early July. Thus, we are left with more questions than answers, and a lot of emotion, too. And so we spend a lot of time talking about the PlayStation Store shutdowns for these platforms (and PSP) this week, and work through all of the philosophical, commercial, and other relevant ramifications that this major move presents. Other news this episode involves fresh PlayStation Plus games, an unfortunate AAA delay, more nonsense from CD Projekt, and much more, and we round it all out -- as we always do -- with questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas from the audience. What's the best time to play during any given title's day/night cycle? Which games would be best for someone new to the shooter genre? Is there any hope for relationship co-op, or will the likes of Overcooked forever ruin love? If you were offered $1,000, would you eat a random person's boogers?

And just like that my day is great ♥️

Dan Morgan

Been playing it takes two with my girlfriend who doesn’t play games much and she loves it, some really unique gameplay elements in it so far. Looking forward to listening !

Jack Doheny

listening to this while i cut the lawn perfect timing

Bryan Watkins

If you're looking to jump into a game with your significant other who doesn't play games, may I suggest CUPHEAD? It's fantastic, you'll have a great time playing together lol.

PuppiesOnParade

I'm fucking crying laughing at the booger convo. Gagged a bit at the thought, but that was genuinely hilarious.

The Late Nate

I threw up in my mouth a bit as Chris was describing the booger orange. This is the shit I pay for, top tier commentary!!

Dennis Fox

I was in the middle of my lunch break as the booger conversation started, safe to say I didn’t finish my lunch. Keep up the A+ commentary guys!

Hose A Contra Razz

So close of buying the habroxia 2 vita copy on eBay because I missed it originally

Jordan Avery

Shout-out to Dustin for suggesting Stardew Valley for co-op

Simon Payne

I'm working away listening to SS, when suddenly I'm gagging. I was fine until Chris brought up an orange sized booger made of 100 boogers. That shit got me. So good job I guess.....

Anonymous

Remind me to never eat food while listening to your podcast again. I soft gagged during the booger conversation 🤢

Jake Z

Colin, stop playing bad games and play It Takes Two. You have a gamer girlfriend and you're wasting it. It's legit one of the funnest games you'll ever play. It's Naughty Dog level environments and set pieces combined with the inventiveness of the best Nintendo games.

BM

Omg don't make your girlfriends play retro games to learn imput controls they arent your parents who have never used a computer or smart phone. Have them play something modern with all the accessibility options turned on and slowly start removing them like training wheels. Be supportive and pick a game with good story and gameplay so if she doesn't like the gameplay the story might get her. Uncharted worked for my wife. Also try Fallguys my wife is addicted to it.

Jeff

This is good feedback. Colin and Micah playing It Takes Two would be awesome content for both of you (and us!).

Shawn Hayden

The continued practice of ignoring things that are inconveniently fact are just funny at this point.

Jake Z

Totally agree haha. I thought it was horrendous to suggest they go back to retro games. Retro games are for hardcore gamer nostalgists. Sackboy, Fat Princess Adventures, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, are modern PS4 games that are great for playing with people who don't often play games.

Ryan Harvey

I don’t know if I’m in a better mood these days or you are Colin but you’re being really funny and seeming in great spirits. Life is pretty good my friend! 😄

lazer_josh

I'm borderline dry heaving rn. The booger talk. Fuck

D'Ante Almo

Jim Ryan is quickly becoming a suit I don’t like... I really miss the early Ps4 crew.. The industry personalities were great!

Xbox Game pass (console/pc) Roughly 400 games Xbox Xbox 360 Xbox One Xbox Series Xbox back compatibility Xbox natively(up-rezed)- 39 Xbox 360- 568 Psnow: Over 800 games Ps2 games (up-rezed) natively- 16 Ps2 remasters streaming- 8-12 Ps3 games streaming- 438-450 Ps4 380 Ps4/5 back compatibility Ps2 natively through the store - 54 Ps3 only available through streaming on PSNow- 450 Ps now offers nearly as many games as microsoft offers back compatibility with THROUGH PS Now. Sonys marketing for just about everything since after the launch of the ps4 has been nothing short of awful. What they're actually doing is pretty close to what MS has done or is doing, except cheaper, and more honest. Colin is right, PSNow isn't in competition to game pass, it cost a third of what game pass does, and I hope it stays that way. I enjoy what Psnow offers. It gives me access to alot of games I didn't buy and/or games I'd like to go back to and play. The streaming works, it saves hard drive space and bandwidth, and all of that for 60 bucks a year. Gamepass offers some new games, and has games coming in and going out more often, the promise of every first party exclusive coming to it day and date is it's real shining spot, but so far in my experience with it, I'd almost be money ahead for myself by buying those games. At $15 a month, that's $180 a year, or 2-4 games depending on price point. My whole purpose for game pass was to get the microsoft first party games and since I subscribed over a year ago, 3-4 games is all they've released. If the xbox was my primary console it would make that $180 make more sense, but the constant attitude that game pass is just this impeccable deal for everyone is just laughable to those of us that it's not. If your done talking about the pros of one service over the other, then you're done having an objective look at them both. All of the arguments I've heard Colin make lately seem to be 100% marketing problems.

Context Should Matter

Booger convo: Chris keeps talking about how covid can kill someone in their 20s & 30s with zero preexisting conditions. What news is he listening to? You have a better chance at tripping and dying from that fall then dying from covid if you are healthy.

@ Levi Bordette: Re your girlfriend playing couch coop games for the first time: May I recommend this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/ax7f3JZJHSw The channel has several other videos along similar lines and could give you some perspective on why she's struggling with these games, and also may spark some ideas about some games you all could play together. Cheers and best of luck!

1:11:54 “The people who jumped on late are the ones getting least fucked.” OHHHHHHHH!!!

Another thing about the shirts that are premium is that the sizes are a size smaller then normal. I am 6' 2 230 and I ordered a 3X because I had a feeling that they might be on the smaller size and even a 3X is a bit snug. So if you're ordering the premium shirt make sure you order a size up compared to normal

Anonymous

But even this doesn't make sense. If you bought the games already, you're not losing access. They are just shutting down the store fronts so the people who try to buy games in the future would be the ones affected, not the early adopters.

Anonymous

It seems that people looked at PS Now years ago when it was only streaming, formed their opinion and moved on. Even Matty confessed on latest episode of DDU that he hasn't really looked at its since 2019. I'm not saying PS Now is great or that criticism isn't warranted, but it would be nice to hear some updated takes.

Paul Knickerbocker

Colin, The premium light blue sacred symbols shirt also has a made in India tag on it. I just received it in the mail last week and want to bring this to your awareness that it may not only be the normal shirts. It doesn't bother me, but I just wanted to make sure you had accurate information. I can provide picture/receipt details if needed. Thanks, Paul

Brandon Soto

Personally, I really don’t care about any of these stores shutting down. I got everything I wanted out of the PS3 store, including my favorite PSOne classics. I just wish they were on new hardware, as well as downloading PS3 games instead of streaming them. The Vita’s dead, whether people wanna admit it or not. It’s been dead for years, but I do sympathize with Colin & other developers making games for it. But it’s been time to move on. (In my opinion) And the PSP, what year is it again?

David P

I see you're taking the "not my problem" route. So much for everyone else who doesn't own a PS4 or 5, huh?

Wayde

That explains why its a bit snug since sizes coming from Asia tend to be on the smaller side. I will have to check my shirt as well to see if it came from India

NeO JD

I’d prob eat that booger for 1K. lol Reminds me of I Bet You Will on MTV. 100 for 100K? I’d prob still do it. 😅 Best COD to start with is either Modern Warfare Remastered or Black Ops 1. Complete packages for both. Also, I wanna say that despite 1 or 2 levels, the Cold War campaign is pretty meh. “Where are my crops, woman?!” 😂 A look into Colin’s future life.

Samuel Ashley

First off, y’all are disgusting. I spent half of my dog walk listening to y’all talk about eating boogers. Anywho, after listen to you guys repeatedly talk about not having very much new to play, I highly recommend checking out IT Takes Two with your significant other or close friend (the whole game is co op). It seems to be flying a little under the radar since it’s release but I’ve been playing with my wife and it’s absolutely fantastic! It’s honestly the most fun and refreshingly new gameplay I’ve played in a game in a long long time. I can’t recommend it enough!

Anonymous

Sorry, I was one of the guys asking about releasing a Vita game physically after the store shutdown. I was just curious if that was possible to do 🤷‍♂️

Wayde

I've been saying for years digital games is not true ownership. They can take the rights from you at any time they want. whether it's good business practice or not is irrelevant. In 20 years I guarantee you won't be able to play playstation 4 games unless you owned them physically or downloaded it before they removed it The reason why there is a run on physical games is because at some point here in the near future since you cannot buy those games digitally anymore the game becomes way more scarce with time.

Lee Bull

For the guy having Co op issues with his girlfriend... Lego Games👌🏻

Bobby Rigo

Ayyy a shoutout to MVG! Nice, Dustin

TL

I agree with you Colin, that a new generation should be new exclusives.

The Late Nate

They should get him on one of the patron shows! If they want to discuss emulation more in depth there is nobody better on YouTube!

Wayde

While I agree I think that is not the end all be all anymore. Consoles are becoming more like PC's where it's more about the upgraded hardware to make games future and past play better.

Cam McCabe

I’m fairly confident that “I think you’re underestimating the size of 100 boogers...” rivals “what the fuck is a shump???” as one of the funniest utterances in Sacred Symbols mythos

What the hell was that one guy talking about with the Japanese frowning on nostalgic consumption or frowning upon playing games past the 5 year mark of release? If that's true then how does one explain the dearth of 2nd hand stores that are all over Japan dealing in Manga/Anime/Gaming/Movies and anything media related? Even more, how do you explain the constant foot traffic those stores get? There is quite a sizeable nostalgia market in Japan. I've never heard anyone (of the people I know who live in Japan and consume old media) being frowned upon for doing so. What is this nonsense?

ur ppnballs

24:50 Chris:"What the hell is going on?" Dustin:"We're dying." Very Ubik moment. Great Book from Phillip K. Dick. You never know where you are in that book but you're not lost.

David P

Yeah it sounded like BS to me. I'm sure the amount of people in Japan saying to "move on" is the same as anywhere else, relatively, rather than a cultural phenomenon.

Anonymous

Colin has mentioned a couple of times on previous shows that the Gameboy Mega Man games are not available digitally. I bought most of these on the 3DS store, am i misconstruing which games he is talking about?

FluffyNeko

Knock Back is basically "But what does his brother think?" The Podcast

FluffyNeko

For me I care about these old games because I didn't grow up playing games that others of my age played, I only had access to very limited amount of games, (mostly lego games), and my family wasn't keen on letting me play games. But when I finally got a full time job at 19 I decided I wanted to play all the games I've always wanted to, or the beginnings of franchises I love. Two months ago I got a ps3 and a day the rumors came out, I got a psp and now I have to spend a lot of money all at once to get the games I've wanted and it frustrates me because I know I won't be able to get a lot of them. I know that I'll miss some and I'll be saying 'fuck I should've bought that!', After the store is gone. I'm turning 21 in July and I'm very late to the ps1-ps3, psp, vita party but I want to be part of the circle that played these games because I really love video games as a whole. And the fact I won't be able to easily buy 3 console libraries from Sony is a really big shame. But it won't stop me from buying digital, only reserving to buy physical of games I really like.

FluffyNeko

Also Colin and Dustin, when I bought my vita it was a used pspvita slim aqua blue, the same Colin has in the box, for only $150 and it came with a 4gb memory card. But I'm sure that because it's used and the screen has small scratches and a few cuts in the edges in the vita, that I got it at a low cost.

BlindRiot

How’s everyone feeling about the new MLB coming to Game Pass day 1?

Kaz Redclaw

(I think the rush on physical games is likely because suddenly people won't be able to buy the digital ones anymore, so suddenly the demand will spike for those physical games when the store closes.)

Jonathon H

The PSN could be permanently shut down in five minutes and I wouldn’t care.

Douglas Morreale

We can't buy old games digitally a *decade* after they released on old hardware? What if I want to buy Cabela's on PSP from the PSN store some day?! I'll have to go through the incovenience of buying it (cheaper) on disc? Damn you Sony! 😱 OUTRAAAGGGEEE!!! 😱

Max Stahl

Another week, another instance of Sony not giving the fan base a reach around.

Edwin Magana

All I can think about is an orange sized compressed booger ball. Thanks for the amazing content and laughs.

Paul Andrew

Not gonna lie, after this news, I finally broke down and jailbroke my vita. I didn't even do this to get free games. I did it because SD2Vita is gonna be the only way I can confidently save my collection.

LastStandMedia

As Richard Hoeg will explain, buying digital isn't much worse than buying physical, in which you are also buying a license.

LastStandMedia

I feel far less bad about PSP and PS3, which are old pieces of hardware. Vita is different.

BlindRiot

I keep coming back to something Matty said on Defining Duke Ultimate, “Microsoft uses Sony as their optical rival”...I think there’s a lot to this idea.

LastStandMedia

To each his own! It's certainly not a road I wanna go down. I'm just gonna buy everything I want and hope they don't shut the store down, and that my extra Vitas hold up. =D

Jaime Martinez

I picked a bad time to listen to this during during my lunch break

Michael Buffill

Hey guys just wanted to clarify i dont bunch you guys in with the games media who overblow everything. Your takes are always informative and well thought out and I appreciate you guys taking my question and the insightful responses. Thanks for the great content!

Joseph Ady

I am confused as to why vita physical games can't still be released?

Anonymous

Chris should know that the vaccines have all been approved by the FDA and are triple the effectiveness of a flu shot, 90% compared to 30% and he really should stop spreading misinformation even if its not on purpose.

Zack Fair

Jim Ryan needs to go unfortunately, he's bad for PlayStation, first MLB goes to Xbox, he shuts down the Vita store and now reportedly, Kojima is making a game for Xbox add to the fact the Bethesda deal.

Richard Court

if there is some new backwards compatibile solution, perhaps sony needs a cutoff date for purchases to sync licences with accounts. migrating that much data over to new databases or whatnot while new purchases are made mid migration could be a serious headache and we just chalk this one up to Sony being the "Sony" of great messaging.

I mean, they can be if you pass certification and publish digitally first, get the carts produced, and then hold them. But after July, it's over.
