There's little doubt Sony is near (or perhaps even at) the front of the race for mass-consumer virtual reality, and it's done a pretty nice job of putting its money where its mouth is. But with PSVR2 tacitly acknowledged and PSVR itself more than four years old, things are starting to slow down a little bit. Or are they? Out of left field, Sony has announced six new PlayStation VR games -- not PSVR2, PSVR -- all of which are due out by the end of 2021. These half-dozen titles create a tantalizing picture of VR's near-future, but at what cost? Why did Sony reveal these titles all at once, how does their strategy line-up with the future of their VR initiative... and are we not paying enough attention to VR on this very show? We discuss. Plus: News galore! Neil Druckmann and Cory Barlog both tell their fans to be patient for their next games, Japan Studio is indeed being taken over by Team ASOBI, Final Fantasy VII Remake's PS5 port is causing some confusion, live-action Nathan Drake actor Tom Holland sounds like he doesn't even know who Nathan Drake is, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! What's the deal with fanboys? How do we approach cable management? Do PlayStation games go on sale too often and too quickly? Why doesn't Chris tell his mom he loves her when he hangs up the phone? All of that -- and more! -- on the other side of the play button.

As someone who owns a psvr and just bought a quest 2. I think oculus/facebook is pulling ahead in the race. Really an amazing piece of tech if you dont mind giving your data to Facebook. Looking forward to your thoughts!

Making Marvel illegal is a bad take

When Dustin first started I was unsure about him only because I’m so resistant to change. He’s so well spoken and eloquently puts together his perspective. Cannot imagine the show without him now.

Yay! Love the PSVR initiative! Sony did release an Iron Man game for PSVR last year that was in my top 10, so they are putting in some effort to draw people in with big IP. But they should do more with first party IP and I think they will. I bet there are a lot of people out there like my brothers, who want to get in on VR, but are waiting for the kinks to get worked out from the first generation. I've told them it's very exciting for people like me who are into the weird experimentation of first gen VR, but it's probably just better for them to wait for PSVR2 for the polish.

If telling your girlfriend a funny little story about how you and your friend both dreamed the same thing about each other’s gf is enough to destroy your relationship, that’s a pretty rocky relationship to start with. Most normal people would just say “huh, what a weird coincidence, that’s kinda funny” and move on with their lives. Me and my wife share all sorts of weird dreams with each other. It’s when you express some sort of desire that that can get you in hot water.

Hey Colin, to answer your question about FF7R and the upgrade, your thought was initially correct had this been the middle of last year. To add some clarity to the issue, before the PS5 dropped there were online infrastructure updates that occurred on the backend that saw the separation of PS+, PSNow, and PS Store purchases and freebies. Beforehand, there was an issue where if you had downloaded a PSNow title, it would show up as "Purchased" in your library and you could not buy it when it went on sale. Same for PS+ titles for those that did not intend on keeping their subscription. You had to wait until it lapsed to buy the title. With the change, it now makes more sense but now you can not upgrade PS+ titles like you could from PS3 to PS4 back in the day for the titles that were crossbuy.

Dropping to $5 tier from $25 tier for 1 week due to unwarranted mustard slander. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Just enforcing them

LastStandMedia

Technologically, perhaps, but there's still a gap in sales. Whoever reaches the most people wins this race.

LastStandMedia

Well, that I know, but that was always floated as an option, no? I was always under the assumption people wanted the opportunity to pay for a game that was given for free, not have the rules collapsed on 'em.

Mason M

I’ve been keeping an eye on PS Store sales on PS Studios published games since PS5 came out and neither Demon’s Souls or Miles Morales have gone on sale. I wonder if that’ll continue.

Douglas Morreale

"It's not a 71!" - This is an opinion.

Wayde

You should not be able to get a free upgrade with extra content without paying for it. You don't actually own the content with playstation plus This is no different than certain PS plus games just being the base game but if you want all the extra DLC you have to purchase it separately. Square Enix is rewarding those of us who purchased it in the beginning and I applaud them for it.

Just in case you get a wild hair Chris no shirt no shoes to me is bit the same yu me as wearing a mask and any time you want to debate I am here. As a Texan I would love nothing more than to have an intelligent conversation with you about this .

Lee Bull

Grab FF VII free, then buy a disc copy for £20/$30 and use that version to upgrade free. Job done.

Piston Pants

To Colin or anyone for that matter. What was the podcast Colin was recently on, I would like to check it out. Apologies if it was said and I missed the name.

Sumojoe118

Tom Holland needs to share his trophy list I would bet he has never beaten an Uncharted game

Travis B

Colin try Yakuza like a dragon. I feel the same way about that series as you do however this game is a turn based rpg unlike the rest. I also believe the story is pretty stand alone so you wont be lost. I bought the ps4 version on the cheap and got the free ps5 update. Just a thought. Have a great day.

Will Hernandez

I’m glad Colin corrected Chris about which team Keith Hernandez played for. As a Mets fan, I had a fucking aneurysm listening to that 😂 Chris, it’s not the same thing!

LastStandMedia

The hunger for PS5 games is such that they can probably continue to charge a premium price.

LastStandMedia

What you're saying makes no logical sense, and also doesn't speak to what we actually said.

Maybe Tom Holland gave an accurate account regarding the writing of his character. Looks like the writers of the movie aren’t Amy Hennig and maybe the powers that be wanted to go in a different direction with Nathan Drake that matches the mass murder you commit in the game lol. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Romeo

Ill fucking fly to that meet up. Ill do it.

James

Genuinely shocked by the ignorant comments regarding the environmental impact of plastic straws, especially on the health of sea animals. I mean, yes, paper straws are terrible, they are not a viable alternative. But come on, man...very rare for you come off so uninformed.

LE

Just a correction Colin, the survival game coming to PSVR is called Song in the smoke not Embrace the primal wilderness.

Zack Fair

Tom Holland should definitely played the Uncharted games to get a feeling of Nathan Drake before any acting started. Feel like he's just done it for a paycheck without care for the character

Anthony J Sanchez

God of war Fallen God comic comes out March 10th Dustin! It tells the story of Kratos between God of War 3 and God of War PS4

Jeremy Craves

I’ve been playing Rocket League consistently since it released on PS+. I don’t think Epic has had a negative effect on the game. I have seen some people complain, though, but I think it’s more to do with Epic than the game. I wonder how well Fall Guys worked out for Devolver. Assuming Epic bought publishing rights.

BlindRiot

Gotta hard disagree with the crews paper straw logic.

BlindRiot

Solid episode boys.

Speaking to the subject of Sony moving away from Japan and becoming a more US based company, I think it really shows in both the marketing and the way they handle censorship in games. I think the face that they are based in California really shows how those woke California values have permeated the brand. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a much more political Sony going forward. The blacklisting of Colin and LSM is part of this California American culture, where if Sony was still based out of Japan it would not be so. I say this as a patriotic American, I hate to see the globalization of these very West Coast American values.

LastStandMedia

They've definitely allowed the brand to become heavily Americanized. I know many of the faces behind the winning side of the civil war, believe me. =)

FF7 Remake PS+ Discussion = Similar thing just happened recently in reverse. The Shark game you love and always talk about was only for PS5 users, the PS4 version was not included for the PS+ free game of the month!

BlindRiot

What shows have you been on? I’d love to check them out.

P Neal

I'm sure someone else posted this but I can't see it. Maneater in Jan is only ps5 version. While control gives you both on ps plus.

Jonathon H

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Habroxia 2 has the greatest trophy list of all time.

LastStandMedia

Hey Jose, I'm just going to delete all of your future multi-comments, since you're just straight-up ignoring my repeated request to stop. I appreciate our fanbase, and I appreciate you, but it's rude and self-important to flout the rules and flood a thread like you sometimes do, and this isn't your house. Please respect the rules. Thanks. <3

P Neal

Looking into the games list of PS Plus. It looks like the Final Fantasy remake is the sole game doing what its doing. The PS3 ->PS4 had PS4 upgrade paths (e.g., Rainbow Skies), Definitive editions (e.g. Tomb Raider), or the PS4 version was locked away in some special place that was not available for general consumption (e.g. Hitman HD)

The Eclectic Gamer

Colin, I heard you were dabbling with Generarion Zero recently but leaving 13 Sentinels waiting in the wings. Definitely resume 13 Sentinels, I have invested about 40 hours into it and am nearing the end. It is phenomenal and worth your time.

Matthew Pistella

I feel that Sony really needs to invest in marketing the quality 3rd Party VR games. There are a bunch of great ones out there. With more visibility it can show that the library of quality titles is much larger than just the top 10-20 and then bring in/back more users.

NoFate

I wanted to post this question for next week’s podcast but not sure where to post it? When it comes to PS/VR, where is Namco and Sega (etc) with all their classic light gun games like Time Crisis, House of the Dead and Silent Scope? Sony said they were treating the PSVR like a new console release, so where’s the passion they showed for the PS1 days? There are many new light gun games in the arcades that have never come to console and so, PSVR seems like the ideal platform for this genre to make a successful return for fans like myself!
