Through a modern lens, board games seem... well... quaint. After all, why would a child play with plastic toys when they can hold an iPad, are we right? Thus, it's incumbent on us to explore the Old Ways, and in reality, those Old Ways are still quite new, indeed. Board gaming, as it turns out, is in a boomtime as we speak. But enough of the contemporary. Let's instead explore the borderline-antiquated, from the capitalistic madness of Monopoly and the frantic Game of Life to the ever-pugnacious Battleship and everyone's first bout with murder: Clue. Oh, and there's plenty more in there, too, from your checkers and chess to your Risk and Axis & Allies. So let's roll the dice to see who goes first, and don't even think about cheating. We're watching closely.

My wife and I have really stepped up our board game play since the pandemic started.

Id been getting dipping my feet into board games the past couple years, but the past couple months I've spent like 5 or 6 hundred bucks on games and another 500 on kickstarters. Board games are just great.

Now with the cams Col is gonna sit there wondering why the same van down the street has been in the same spot for 2 days 😂

I already had the security company come back today to plan moving the recorder box to a closet, because it's too loud. LOL.

When's the Assy McGee show coming?

PuppiesOnParade

Top tier knockback episode, guys. Really sparking a fire under my ass to get back into board games.

Greetings gentlemen! Would like to suggest to you guys if you like Monopoly, check out Monopoly Deal. 2-5 players, card-based Monopoly. Designed to be played in ~15 minutes. It takes the essence of Monopoly (property management, renting out and paying people, screwing people over) and boils it down to a 15 minute, excellent card game. It has been a hit at every family function I’ve been to for about 5 years now. Anyways, hope all is well for you guys. Cheers from Texas 😉

Crossfiyah!!!!!

I was really happy to hear you defend Monopoly and shit on house rules that fuck up the flow/chastise people who claim finishing a game is impossible. The only thing that made me go “woah woah woah” was you saying a game of Monopoly should be finished in 30-40 minutes. Are you playing 1 on 1? My buddies and I do a yearly game (100% inspired by you and Greg back in the day) and we have 4-5 players. The games take 2.5 to 3 hours. And we’ve done it on the board and on PS4. There’s no fuckin way in hell a 5 player Monopoly game can finish in 40 minutes, lol. And to be clear, that entire 3 hours is fun. God damn board games can be the best.

Speaking of risk did you guys ever play 2210AD Also GO>chess

i actually played Battleship with my mom last xmas and she won! it was a super close game down to the wire when she took the win. she bought the game for her grandkids but they weren’t interested sadly. also i always think of the movie Batman Forever and the silly battleship scene

The Devmeister

I don’t know why this feels so weird but I’m listening to this while playing Habroxia 2 and I feel like Colin and I are just one right now. LOL.

Andres

this episode ruled. experienced so much pure nostalgia listening to this! I actually ordered the board game Pandemic while listening to this.

Will Hahn

You know what game I can’t stand? Settlers of Catan. I just can’t do it.

Brandon Soto

Board out of my mind listening to this one.

Daniel Boyer

CROSSFIRE! always accusing the other person of tilting the board. Great episode!

That Tic-Tac-Toe point had me dying. 😂 We really should stop people playing it.

Jose Horrach

Name 1 person who actually played Mouse Trap properly. I bet you can't.

Hey Colin, have you guys done a knockback on the original run of The Twilight zone? That series is still so thought provoking and ahead of it’s time. Rod Sterling has to be one of the coolest TV hosts of all time.

Jeremy Menear

Colin! There's a Mega Man board game you should give a shot! :)

NeO JD

The camera set-up sounds cool. Figures you’d be the best at Monopoly Col. I can’t remember ever finishing a game either. 😄 Preach on the boring front. I can’t even talk to someone who says that. Boring people get bored.

Since the lockdown I've really broadened my board game experience. As a kid I mostly played just the basics which you've covered in this podcast. I can't believe on how many fun games with deep mechanics I've missed out on all this time. If you haven't played them I really recommend trying games like Food Chain Magnate or Cuba Libre. I can't see myself going back to games like Monopoly or Risk any longer.

Andrew Sutton

Listening to Dagen talk about Mouse Trap cracked me up. My parents got me and my brother a game at some point. I don’t remember much about it except the fact that it didn’t include all the parts and you couldn’t play it. What a crock! 😂

Nate McKinney

I can relate to the Scrabble story. We played it and Words With Friends (the cell phone equivalent) and all us English majors played it. Those games were no fucking joke.
