On its periphery, the 2006 film The Prestige is about an ever-escalating rivalry between two 19th century magicians, but in reality, its thematic focus is about something far more sinister: Obsession. Christopher and Jonathan Nolan's adaptation of the novel by the same name boasts a star-studded cast and a convincing recreation of late-Victorian London, but -- in true Nolan fashion -- it's what rests far beneath the surface that perhaps matters most. So practice your sleight-of-hand and pay your ingénieur well, friends. After all, it's worth paying a high price in order to revel in the glory of the crowd. Are you watching (well, listening) closely?

Years of pleading and we're finally here.... Sooooo excited to listen to this one!

I wonder if the IGN UK crew will check this out.

JD

.... It's been 84 years .gif

I assume you don’t listen to them, they worship The Prestige, last question they ask in every interview and guest is have you seen it, they also organized a huge public screening in London last year, like festival sized lol

Small correction, Hugh Jackman is the Australian, and Christian Bale is the British (Wales) one. Believe you mixed them up. Enjoyed both your thoughts on the film, I really enjoyed watching it again recently as well.

Another great episode. I love The Prestige but I do agree it's lower Nolan for me. But I think it's better than Dunkirk but thats just me. His true underrated gem is Insomnia and would love to see an episode on that. I'm pretty sure besides Following it's the only ones y'all haven't done yet besides obviously Tenet.

Maybe I missed it but did nobody bring up how the story itself sort of mirrors the three steps of the magic trick? The pledge of the setup, the turn where you find out there’s two of them and the bonkers prestige ending with the sci-fi angle.

Evan Bederman

There were a few times in the episode where it felt to me like Colin was confusing Julia (played by Piper Perabo) and Sarah (played by Rebecca Hall). Julia died early in the film and didn't have much of a role beyond the initial cause of Angiers' hate for Borden. Sarah was Borden's wife who had the apartment and was a significant character for most of the film.

I'll check it out! Always looking out for documentaries. =)

Well I definitely confused them in the beginning, but I don't think I did after that? My notes may be wrong. =\

Definitely recommend Ford vs Ferrari, very good movie with a really interesting true story to look into after you see it. Dagan.... Thank you again for your therapeutic voice

Still waiting for the time to listen to this. I really enjoy the Prestige, both Jackman and Bale are great. Interested to hear Colin and Dagans thoughts on the weird Tesla sci fi elements Nolan brings in, i know some dont like it but i think it works well and really emphasises just how desperate and how far Angier was willing to go to beat Borden and experience the audiences reaction. I also think the real twist is that its actually the the daughters real father who stays with her in the end, I think its quite obvious later in the movie that Fallon is Borden and it all results in a really satisfying ending for whats really quite a sad and depressing story about 2.. or 3 men and what are willing to sacrifice for their craft and rivalry, and how that ultimately hurts and destroys the people around them.

Robert Graham

Lol that beating my rivals comment XD. The product speaks for itself.

Happy belated birthday Colin! Hope you had a great day and enjoyed your feast with your family!

I think the buildup and introduction of David Bowie's Tesla was so perfect. Him strolling through the electricity gives me goosebumps.

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned it but it’s Fallon who hangs and Borden is the one who survives and lives on.

I'm so glad you guys covered this movie, but disappointed that it's so low on your list as it's my favorite Nolan movie. I think it's because what grabs me most in movies and games are characters, and this movie has my favorite characters of all the Nolan movies

Dee Han

Colin, you have not played Jak 2 or 3 so how can you claim that Uncharted or The Last of Us are better? For me, ND peaked at Uncharted 2 post Jak 2 and 3. Now they just make generic zombie games.

Tyler Bello

This is sometimes disappointing I feel like you rate movies lower if you dont understand them immediately and movies like this i hate that you didn't get it the first time :/ breaks my heart. No disrespect love you Colin!
