Next month, the long-in-development Avengers game comes to PlayStation 4 (it'll come to PS5 when the console launches, too), and there's a special sort of catch for Sony gamers: When Spider-Man arrives in Crystal Dynamics' long-awaited multiplayer adventure in 2021, he'll only be available within the ecosystem. That is to say, Xbox and PC players won't have access to arguably the biggest character in the entire experience. Is such a move a vestige of generations past? Or are the Big Three about to compete for every exclusive scrap like never before? We delve in. Then, in other news: PS4 continues to climb the historical sales charts, Street Fighter V is about to welcome four new challengers, 2020's Call of Duty is on the verge of being revealed, Ubisoft sheds more dead weight, and more. And in listener questions, we explore if visual novels are really video games per se, whether Wild is officially vaporware, if the so-called "Console War" between fans of the different consoles is getting better or worse, and if it's possible that Chris doesn't understand food. All of that -- and much more! -- on the other side of the play button.

What’s up C&C, 2 parter: Have you guys already decided to do a SS+ episode of your Top 10 games of the PS4 generation? I think it would be a cool format to sift through your trophy lists and come up with a top 10 list and explain what made the games so special to you (could even toss in 2 or 3 of your biggest disappointments of the generation, lookin at you Destiny 1) Okay, so here’s where it might get, what Colin might refer to as “weebish.” Colin - I’ve seen you post pics of your yellow legal pad notes that you take while playing games to prepare you for either KB or SS/SS+. Have you ever thought about selling these or doing some sort of giveaway/contest each week? I would honestly love to have this deep bit of Sacred Symbols lore signed by the best duo in podcasts. (I did warn that it would be somewhat of a weebish post, don’t bash me too much)

I wonder if Colin loves John Waters' Pink Flamingos?

Chris

Oxford comma makes no real difference in a sentence like “I like waffles, pancakes, and French toast,” but if you write “i watched x-files, parks and rec, and community,” you’d lose clarity without your old pal Oxford comma.

Gr4vity400

Flamingos are pretty tall and scary. I was staying at a resort in Dominican Republic that had Flamingos and they hissed and chomped at passing people constantly. They're mean and kind of terrifying. Much better in plastic (and metal.)

My favorite thing about Colin is he's an underdog hero.

CHRIS YOU'RE WRONG, I WOULD ABSOLUTELY WANT NACHOS IN MY LAST MEAL BEFORE DEATH ROW

I learned inverted controls with flight games and a joystick in the 90s. You pull back to pull up and forward to go down. Lol what happens if you play the opposite way is you just constantly look up or down and then try to just stay level until it pisses you off enough to change it. Only one of my friends besides me use inverted controls, so it comes up a lot. Flamingos are just pink geese btw lol

Chris really has a very pro consumer opinion on spiderman Sony is being smart and good on them

Hey C and C Just thought i would weigh in on the iron man VR topic. I bought the VR Ironman bundle when it came out, and this was my first venture into VR I can’t see why that one guy was calling it bad. I had a great time with it and am looking forward to more VR experiences. I will give one negative comment about the game, loading times. It seemed to take forever to load the next level, but the game was awesome. PSVR in general is better than i anticipated. Have a good day guys, keep the podcasts coming.

Hey C’s In regards to Sony games with micro transactions, the big one that comes to mind is the mlb the show series. You can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on “stubs” (their virtual currency) and use those to buy cosmetic and perk items for created players, or the big one card collection in diamond dynasty. Love you guys thanks for the content

Getting mad that Spider-Man is exclusive to Sony is like getting mad that main line Pokémon games are exclusive to Nintendo.

I'm not really interested in the Avengers game since I think it looks terrible and previews haven't been kind. I think what annoys me most about the Spider-Man exclusivity situation is that the game is being sold for the same price on Playstation and Xbox, despite the Xbox version having less content and support. As you mention, it does make total sense for Sony to want this deal, if anything it damages the integrity of the game itself and people who now find themselves disappointed should probably direct at least some of their frustrations at Square instead. I know when Destiny did similar dealings with Playstation it significantly hurt the overall community and longevity of their game, and since breaking free from Activision, Bungie have sworn off such deals in the future due to the harm it caused. Also I think the DualSense controversy is pretty trivial, although when the primary competition is allowing their controllers to be fully forward compatible I think it's valid to be slightly disappointed. I agree on Raven being a good fit to at least lead development on a COD campaign! I loved Singularity but hated the multiplayer achievements and multiplayer mode generally though.

Correction: Sony does not have exclusive rights to the Spider-Man IP. I don’t know why people keep saying this. They have the FILM rights to Spider-Man. He is still in every other Marvel game that comes out (LEGO games, ultimate alliance, etc). He is still in Marvel comics and TV shows. Insomniac doesn’t have the rights to Spider-Man either. In an interview with IGN, the director literally said that Marvel approached them to make a game and were able to choose any IP they wanted and they chose Spider-Man. However, you have to compliment Sony’s marketing; they have everyone, including both of you, convinced that Spider-Man is a Sony-exclusive property.

Jake Z

Iron Man VR is very good! Yes, the load times are bad and some of the textures are low res, but it really feels awesome to play! You do feel like Iron Man with how good the movement is! And for all the people jaded by so many games playing the same, this really is a game like nothing you've ever played before. It truly feels fresh and cool.

Anthony J Sanchez

Crash 4 looks awesome! Keep up the great work guys!

Jake Z

Are you sure they don't now have some "Spider-Man third person action game" exclusive rights after making the Insomniac Spider-Man game? Did Sony agree to make those games while allowing the possibility that Xbox or Nintendo also fund a third person Spiderman action game? That would be hard to believe.

Doesn’t Sony ‘own’ Spider-Man in the same way Microsoft owns Master Chief? There’s no way in a million years Master chief would ever appear on a PlayStation console, and people wouldn’t moan if that character appeared in (for example) Mortal Kombat exclusive to Xbox. People need to stop moaning or buy a PS4.

Brandon Soto

You’re telling me a bush baked those beans?

The console war negativity has always been around even in the PS2 /Xbox/Game Cube era. It was just relegated to niche gaming forums which made them less visible to the general public. With social media sites like reddit, twitter, etc... making those niche forum sites less relevant, these console war arguments are more visible to more casual gamers and non-gamers alike.

Jake Z

Re the visual novels as games question, Chris had an interesting answer about games having fail states, but Colin's response was valid. Games don't need to have fail states. Wittgenstein, the great 20th century philosopher, famously argued that much of ordinary language could be likened to our concept of "game." "Game," he argued, is a family resemblance concept that doesn't really have necessary and sufficient conditions, but is commonly understood as something where rules are made and followed. He also described much of human interaction as the playing of various language games.

Joseph Tartaglia

Colin, keep killing those cows...I got your back lol

Explosivebob

Good episode guys thanks for the entertainment!

This talk of Frolf just makes me think of Ribbit King. Bring that PlayStation classic to the PS5 Sony!

I considered visual novels in the same camp as walking simulators, they are "games" that are designed to tell a story, but not taking advantage of the medium outside of limited interactivity, like a "choose your own adventure" book. I don't care if people consider them games or not, but I recognize them as a niche that doesn't appeal to me as I don't play games solely to be told story. I read books, watch tv, or movies for that.

Keep fucking those days; Great chickens again!

Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is definitely a game you can play with no effort. A fun collectible game. Easy platinum.

I like buying games digitally, I have bought every game digitally this generation, however I will always buy my consoles with a disc drive for as long as possible. First, I want the blu ray player since I continue to buy movies/shows on discs. Second, I want the ability to play disc games if the need arises. I want my friends to be able to bring over physical games to play. I also buy physical backup copies of those games I really like and will still want to go back and play 5, 10, or 20 years from now. Can't be sure that it would be possible to download Bioshock on the Xbox store or PS store that far in the future. And sometimes the ability to play the unpatched version of a game can come in handy. Like the recent Bioshock patch that added support for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro actually fucked up the frame rate a little bit, it's actually better to play the disc version..

Ryan Ripley

Hahaha I live in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan Canada....can confirm very mysterious families up here!

I'm gonna really miss physical games, now I'll always have to wait hours and hours to download anything): SAD

Chris- a dvd menu is a video game. Colin - speechless 🤣 I’ve had ps plus way before you needed it for online and I think getting rid of it is a terrible idea. Make online free sure but keep the deals and games going. Not interested in renting games with ps now. What happens to the library of games over the years if Plus is gone

Dylan Neves

I feel like inverted vertical controls were inspired by aviation cockpit stick controls. IIRC if you pull towards you, you'll go up, and vice versa? As far as preference, I think most of us who like inverted controls were simply conditioned to it with older games, namely Zelda for me. And yeah, PS+ should integrate PS Now into itself. Nintendo is doing something similar, giving you a vast catalog of games, albeit in a limited, retro and perplexing way.

Around the 40 mark I was so worried Chris was gone for the rest of the episode! SS without the dream team is just not the same!

have a mechanical keyboard as well and it's the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I even bought a "mem-chanical keyboard" (membrane keyboard that types like a mechanical) for work so typing feels better but doesn't have the loud clicking. Typing on mechanicals is just amazing.

lazer_josh

I live 20 minutes from the bush beans museum in TN! Actually the main Bush beans plant is in Newport. Pretty neat. ....thinkin bout thos beans

Jordan Knepp

As for what Chris said about buying digital for so long and then wanting to go to physical, I must say that I'm thinking of going back to physical with ps5. With the amount of games I bought digital and platinum'd it would just make way more sense to buy physical so I could resell it. Now I have all these games I'll never play anymore that I've platinum'd that I could make a ton of money on (with the amount I have) I don't know if I will, but I like to think I would stop being lazy and actually get up and go buy it rather than just buying it on ps store.

Were you buying all of your games full price? I would suggest practice patience and hold off on buying games within the first 4 months of launch and buy them after they've been heavily discounted. I just bought Doom Eternal, a game that only came out in April, for $30 on PSN.

Good day to you fine gentlemen, As an Englishman who was nearly killed by Crohn’s disease, I can honestly say that you both had me crying tears of laughter during this latest episode - you’ll have to try harder if you want to offend this Brit! (Although, I’ll never understand the pronunciation of niche as “nitch”.) I’ll admit to enjoying beans on toast occasionally and can exclusively reveal that spaghetti on toast is also a fairly common British “delicacy”. Chris can relax though, I can’t say that either option has ever given me gas... Anyway, love you longtime and stay safe over there!

Joseph Tartaglia

Solid episode and appreciated the video game adjacent talk at the onset

Josh Lucas

My biggest concern with not being able to use the DualShock 4 with PS5 games is what if I dislike the DualSense? The DualShock 4 is one of my favorite controllers of all time, and the DualSense looks more like an Xbox one controller than DS4.

My Dude

Sony's rights to Spiderman are limited to film. For anything else, the character falls back under Marvel's control. This exclusivity isn't just a case of Sony simply not letting one of it's characters on another platform, they instead went out of their way and paid for this exclusivity, which is kind of a dick move when it comes to such a major character.

JD

Dick move to who? Xbox and PC players? That's the intention. Grow the PS5 ecosystem as much as possible to lock down player purchases and get 30% of every transaction made. Xbox is going the subscription and 70% of every Xbox game on steam purchase.

LastStandMedia

We'll do all-generation episodes towards the end of the year and in 2021. Per your second part, it's a really nice idea, and maybe I can do that... but I kinda wanna keep my notes, maybe? I dunno. We'll cross that bridge one day. =)

LastStandMedia

I've never even heard of this; I just Googled it. This looks awesome. I gotta check this out.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, it all depends on which side of the equation you are. But such a move certainly makes sense.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, that's the first time I've heard anything bad about it, actually. Not that I've been digging too deep.

LastStandMedia

Yeah: This is ultimately Square Enix's fault for capitulating, but I don't blame them. They want money.

LastStandMedia

No, Microsoft owns-owns Master Chief; Sony owns specific rights to the Spider-Man character. And you'll see Halo on PS5 at some point. I feel it. Still, I agree: No real reason to moan about it.

LastStandMedia

I think it's very wise for the market to continue to cater to people like you. You're just now officially in the minority!

LastStandMedia

I would assume you'd just get to keep your Plus games for a certain amount of time. I'm sure it's in the ToS that they can take the games back.

LastStandMedia

That was the inspiration. The question is: How did I -- a person who didn't play flight sims -- come to play inverted?!

FoxHopSmash

I know the backlog is huge Colin but if you like old school Bioware RPGs I recommend Greedfall. Its campy but the story is good and the whole colonial theme really works well.

Sumojoe118

They definitely need to combine PS Plus and Now in some way. I was really annoyed a few months ago when they gave out Farming sim 2019 and Cities Skylines on PS Plus but both were already available on PS Now which ripped off people that pay for both services.

Anonymous

You better believe I have a response to the question about visual novels being videogames, and I only pray that it gets picked up because I think it truly frames the discussion in the most productive and accurate way.

Matthew Skora

Just here to say the episode still isn’t showing up on YouTube yet. Want to make sure you’re aware of this. But, listened to the episode on the Apple Podcasts app and it was great as usual.

Erk-Prime

GoT is too long for me. I'm going through it but feeling boredom with the same old fox chasing and battles- is there anything else to do? LoZBotW had the Gold drop temples to add variety but GoT- lwhy is this so boring at times. 33% trophies act 2 Max weapons etc. Am I losing my interest in video games? Lol

LastStandMedia

It is really long. I was shocked when I zoomed out on the map and was like... wait... there's so much more. I don't know if I'm excited about that or not, but I'm gonna stick with it.

Craig Mcguire

Colin with regards Spiderman, would it not have been also smart to let Spiderman be available to PC and Xbox players to give them a taste and potentially create more interest in the character in video game form especially with the upcoming Miles Morales and inevitable Spiderman 2 on PS5. Basically they play Avengers, the Spiderman levels are awesome, well play the full spiderman experience exclusively on PS5

Pete

Hey Colin, Great episode. As always. Regarding the summer of gaming vs E3. Agree 110% with you that this summer has proved that we don't need E3. Publishers, developers, journalists, content creators, consumers all just benefit from having more oxygen. Sure, the highs aren't as intense as an E3. But I don't think the hype was any less for the PlayStation showcase this year compared to previous years. Cheers, Pete PS. Your Watch VR write up was hilarious

The free camera adapter will probably be the same way Xbox did it by you registering your old camera serial number and the PS5 online. No double dipping unless you have another Ps5 and extra cameras
