Nintendo is undoubtedly best-known for its long-running, ubiquitous franchises: Mario, Zelda, and the like. But sprinkled in the mega-selling mixture are games that sold far less, but have earned their own level of reverence. EarthBound -- launched in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in the US -- is one such adventure. Known as Mother 2 in Japan (the original Mother was a Famicom game that didn't see western release for more than two decades), EarthBound is a truly peculiar, truly charming title, one that pits four children against a dangerous, world-consuming foe. It's a JRPG based heavily on conventions introduced by Dragon Quest, but its quirky style, colorful graphics, and humorous dialogue are all its own. It also didn't sell very well, either in Japan or outside of it, and has many divisive features. So let's chat about all of it -- the whole tapestry that makes EarthBound... well... EarthBound... -- and sort out whether Ness' journey has earned its place in the annals of gaming history. (Topic begins at  0:21:38.)

Sorry this one went up a couple of hours late; I accidentally had it auto-publishing on the wrong date, and just noticed. <3

Hyped! Earthbound, the South Park games, and Ni No Kuni are my favorite RPGs of all time. PK FIRE! :)

This will def be one i will listen to before playing. Too far back to make time for but have heard it is a great game.

I have one word for fuzzy pickles, manscape.

I watched you play this on stream making fun of their faces the entire time it was great! Love the show, Colin!

DB Cooper

Perfect timing. I just started back at work and needed me some Dagan to listen to in the office. Oh, and you too, Colin. 😂

Jordan Falduto

Just wanted to say thanks for playing through one of my favorites and giving it a shot. Getting to hear you and Dagan talk about SNES era JRPGs evokes so much nostalgia. Secret of Evermore next, please! lol...

Brandon Hardman

Great podcast, I forgot I submitted a question. Woodrow Wilson was a real piece of shit.

Craig Carter

I've been listening to your twitch streams at work and I'm excited to listen to your final thoughts on this one Colin and also get Dagans current perspective on this game today

I feel like ‘Undertale’ is a game that has a similar vibe to Earthbound. It’s the first thing that came to mind when the question was read.

Sweden is in a semi lockdown, we never closed schools or restaurants and nobody was forced to stay home although the government recommended people to engage in social distancing. Just as in the rest of the world all public events have been cancelled and everyone who can work from home is working from home. But other than that it's business as usual. The mentality here in Sweden is that everyone is free to tackle the pandemic in their own way, some people I know have chosen to stay inside 24/7 and others are out and about but everyone is careful and follows the standard procedure of washing your hands etc.

Frej Karlsson

Oh and probably 1 out of a 100 people is wearing a mask, again I don't know if this is the best strategy, just thought I should share some info on the situation here in Stockholm Sweden.

I remember being a kid and renting this from blockbuster before I could buy the game. For the longest I was stuck at the part fighting the shark gang. Then the next time i rented it of course I used someone else’s save that got passed them lol. Later on i did end up buying the game and got passed the shark gang myself. At the time I didn’t know the concept of grinding so I suppose that’s why I struggle

Interesting approach this week Colin, but you had the feeling and you were right, Dagan takes it this week for me. 2-1. Just some hot lines in there.

Gotta give Smash Bros. credit for introducing Ness to a lotta people. Had no idea who he was at the time. Could say the same for Captain Falcon, Marth, Roy, etc.

Dude my brother loves Jericho. I told him about it because I liked it too but he really loved the hell out of it.

Whenever you and Dagan do a deep dive of a game on Knockback it makes me want to go play it right after I finish the episode. I actually played Earthbound on an emulator in about 2006, but I definitely didn’t finish the game at the time. I might have to break out the SNES classic and give it another go.

Never could get into this game. Western themed rpg done by jrpg team just doesn’t translate for me. I know tons of people love it just wasn’t my flow. Enjoyed this episode nonetheless

I agree with Colin for the most part, Earthbound is directionless and far from cohesive with so many nagging gameplay missteps. But I'm with Dagan when he highlights just how much earthbound's appeal is how kid focused it is. There's not many games that encapsulate what it is like to be a child and earthbound does it extremely well - better than any other game in the series. But where earthbound falters in its cohesion and depth, Mother 3 shines. The gameplay is improved, the characterisation is incredible, the emotions are heightened and the childlike wonder and nostalgia is bought to the forefront. It all intertwines so wonderfully to create an extremely satisfying jrpg. I would love to hear your guy's opinion on it at some point, especially you Colin. It's very common for people to not get the fuss behind earthbound and be won over by 3. I am definitely one of those people.

I could never enjoy this game. I think a big part of it was the combat had like no animations or anything. Watching a little person walk 2 steps and swing can go along way.

I like the way Sweden did things, though I don't know who's got it right. I guess we'll find out.

Frej Karlsson

I agree! We won't know until all of this is over and all the data is collected and analysed. I expect to see numerous popular science and history books about the corona pandemic in the coming years..

2022-01-24 04:38:50 So, Earthbound is also available on the 3DS eShop but is only playable if you have "New 3DS" system. A bunch of other SNES games are also on it with that requirement. In addition, a version of Mother 1 & 2 was made for the GBA that never got here too.

New non free loader here...Dagan nailed it the perfect age group. My brother got this game brand new....one of the few for Christmas. He loved RPGs and he was around 12-13 years old. This game to this day remains one of his favorites. Over the years we’ve both bought and sold the retro games of our youth but he never sold his original Earthbound. In fact one day when he was still living at home our mother took it upon herself to do some spring cleaning. She threw away many cardboard SNES boxes. Needless to say when my brother came home he almost shit a brick. The one that I survived though was Earthbound. The large unique box had escaped my mother. Simply due to the size and uniqueness she didn’t know what the hell it was.

Thanks for supporting us! I think most of us threw out our old NES and SNES boxes during the time we were buying games... I don't really know what the fuck we were thinking, really.
