While we await news of PlayStation 5 from Sony (seriously... what the hell are they doing?), news has emerged from two important -- and very different -- projects. First, Ghost of Tsushima, arguably the last of the big PlayStation 4 first party exclusives, finally has a release date, and it's a lot sooner than any of us expected. Then, a more unexpected nugget: The Last of Us is getting an HBO series! But is that a wise risk to take with arguably the brand's most beloved IP? We discuss. Lots of other news is circulating this week, too. Sony Santa Monica loses its longtime leader, Call of Duty's free-to-play battle royale has arrived, E3's slow death continues, and the existence of a Star Wars game called Project Maverick leaks on PSN. Also, listener questions! Why did Ubisoft make such significant changes to The Division 2? Does stress and worry ever stop us from enjoying gaming? Should Sony buy Arc System Works? Is Chris dying of a deadly virus?

Fuck yeah. Hey Colin how’s Virginia treating you?

Anonymous

Nice, we're at the number of the year I was born.

Anthony J Sanchez

Thank you both for helping me through some stressful times in my life. You guys are awesome!

Caleb Greer

Hi Colin, I would hold off on the Xbox Series X SS+ episode until next week. Microsoft will be livestreaming their GDC conference would-have-been talks on Mixer next week, including one that is “Xbox Series X + Project xCloud = New Chapter in Gaming.” https://www.trueachievements.com/n41010/microsoft-will-livestream-their-planned-gdc-xbox-series-x-and-xcloud-talks Basically, if you hold off one week, even if you don’t watch the livestreams, you’ll likely get more info reported from mainstream outlets etc. where you can have a better discussion about it.

Kenneth Oms

They added classic mode to ff7 remake so if people want to play turn based they can. My biggest complaint about the remake is that the new combat mode, the party a.i is so fucking bad that you essentially play turn based anyways.

Lee Bull

I submitted this in SS+ XXI "My prediction for 2020 is this, Sony continue the radio silence as long as possible before going BIG. Having their own event showing off the PS5, a number of impressive launch titles, new features etc, with a perfect price point and a mic drop moment" Looking more and more likely 👍🏻

I have a hard time believing that TLOU HBO show will be an 100% retread of the game. I think the show will if anything expand the story and lore of TLOU. I wanna learn more about Marlene and her relationship with Ellie. Also I would love to see more about Joel and Tommy and their time together during those 20 years after the outbreak. I'm fairly confident this show will do the game justice as it seems to be in good hands. We'll see.

OrochiNewsTeam

Why is Chris lying to himself? He will have a full report on COD: War zone next podcast. The world around him will collapse and force him to jump on board. Be 100% he is lying if he has no knowledge on this free title, be it first hand or from watching his room mates.

Detroit: Become Human came out 1 month after God of War and there were no problems. Saying Ghost of Tsushima is in trouble or Sony might not have any confidence in it because it comes out a full month later is a massive reach. Don't mean to be mean spirited, I'm just saying that's borderline tinfoil hat territory. Sony is probably just trying to keep their momentum going, Dreams in February, Nioh 2 in March, Final Fantasy 7 in April, The Last of Us Part 2 in May, Ghost of Tsushima in June.

D'Ante Almo

I never sell my hardware. Literally still have all of the consoles I’ve ever gotten. I definitely didn’t want to sell them to greedy ass Gamestop. Yes, the Ps5 will be backwards compatible but I’d much rather keep my ps4. Why would I bog down my Ps5 hard drive with ps4 games, when I have a perfectly good ps4 pro and base ps4 with the games already downloaded and ready to go.

Loving the episode guys. I feel like TLOU can be a great opportunity for Sony to introduce this world to non video game players. Craig Mazin's work on Chernobyl gives me great hope this can be a successful HBO series.

Matthew Clem

This is exactly what I thought of too. I mean, maybe there are issues, we haven't really seen much of the game over the years, but I feel like it's okay. Gives them plenty of uninterrupted time to focus on PS5 too.

Mark Zebro, Jr.

I gotta say, Arkham Asylum was one of the easiest platinums I ever got. I went back and replayed it only months ago on PS3 and the challenges didn’t seem as hard as they were for me when I played it back in 2009.

Richard Duflo

The original Resistance had an in game achievement list. I really thought that game would get a Trophy patch just turning that list into Trophies. I hope there is a Resistance collection coming. Such great games.

Drew Sleezer

I can’t help but think that Ghost of Tsushima is actually a major casualty in wake of the delay to the Last of Us. I’m sure Sony shows preferential treatment to TLoU2, and that the PS5 major marketing schedule was already in place, leaving Sucker Punch between a rock and a hard place.

Real Radec

The remaster discussion is really interesting to me. As someone who really enjoys Sony's IP the way they handle this is inconsistent. It seems Sony is really particular in which of their games will get the "remake" over the "remaster" treatment. I mean Sony finally got around to Patapon 2, but where is Patapon 3? We got Parappa but no Umjammer Lammy? What I'm essentially saying is that I hope that for PS5 sony get this shit straight and has all their games available to play on it. Whether its the legacy version upscaled or new remakes like Shadow of the Colossus, MediEvil or Demons Souls.

Hose A Contra Razz

So when i get vita card i cant open it because the virus is waiting to pounce on me

Colin I must say this, it was a big miss with the AO question not to mention creampie being one of those words with a double entendre.

GameSimp

I really identified with the question about not being able to enjoy games during tough times. I’ve lost two grandparents to death - and a cousin to schizophrenia - within the last 4 months. That, combined with the usual stresses of college and such, has left me feeling quite lost from late 2019 to now. Not to mention the struggles we have felt as a society with Coronavirus and such. All of this is to say that I feel you, Colin and others. Hopefully a silver lining pops up soon

Timothy Bryant

I just hope twin breaker is popular enough for not only all websites to be forced report that success, but also to see a PS5 version

Anonymous

Thanks for answering my question about a let’s play of Twin Breaker. Can’t wait to play it and see you guys play it too!

Josh Moore

Colin, you should give SOMA a shot. Gameplay is ehh, but the story is awesome. Really thought provoking stuff.

Jake H.

Just a quick correction: When discussing Ghost of Tsushima you conjectured that the developer might be trying to get preorder money from Amazon, but Amazon only charges for game preorders once the product has shipped—not at the time of purchase. Thanks for a great episode.

Michael Thew

So idk if your still picking rpgs, but I’d try out Breath of Fire dragon quarter or skies of Arcadia on the GameCube or Dreamcast

Oliver Johnson

Arkham Asylum was my first platinum! I have all the Rocksteady platinums and it makes me kind of happy to hear that they are considered difficult. Arkham City was really tough. Still I say go for the Asylum platinum. It wasn’t too hard but I’ll be honest, I’m really fucking good at those games.

NeO JD

I’m not worried about GoT coming out close to TLoU. That new trailer was dope. Think Sony’s killing it with the April-June releases. Hopefully that means they want to get those out of the way so they can drop the PS5 deets after. I think TLoU series is probably gonna do what The Witcher did and expose a lot of non-gamers to the franchise and hopefully it’ll be all good for everyone. I trust that Neil will figure out a way to make it different but still be enjoyable.

Josh Lucas

Totally with you guys about The Last of Us HBO show. I was disappointed when I saw it was just retelling the same story from the game. I was hoping it’d tell Joel’s backstory like you also mentioned/suggested. TLoU is already such a cinematic experience, I don’t understand wanting to just redo that again but live action. Oh well. I know I’ll still watch haha.

Bryan Finck

I'm sometimes puzzled by the talk about release dates and how it hurts other games to be released so close together. If a game is good, it will find its audience, even if it isn't on Day 1. You may see a smaller than normal # for early sales on Ghosts, but most folks will buy TLoU, play it, and then move on to Ghosts if they were ever going to play it anyway. Sony may need to have a little patience when looking at the sales figures, but if the game is good, people will play it, end of story. I get the narrative if it's two very similar games, like two modern FPS or two Battle Royale games, but I don't see these games being similar enough to cannibalize each other's audiences.

Kaleb

Gotta say Colin, I almost burst out laughing at work hearing you say the name Midoriya.

Bryan Finck

As far as the TLoU show, I think the point people are missing is there is a massive swath of people in the world who will watch a show but will never play a video game. So there are millions upon millions who don't know Joel & Ellie's story, why wouldn't you want to open up a beloved IP to a wide audience like that? Think about Game of Thrones, everyone loved the early seasons when they retold the stories of the books, with some small changes. Once the books were gone, it went off the rails and people complained. Seeing that reaction, why wouldn't they be inclined to tell the story they have already told, with some inclusions of all the world-building they have in place? You've got Ish's story, you've got Joel & Tommy, Joel & Tess, Ellie's mom and Marlene, Ellie and Riley, all that stuff. I trust Neil to take his world and flesh it out. If the show is good, people will watch it. Clearly there is still an appetite for zombie stuff, waning as it may be, witnessed by the millions who still watch the cinematic shit-pile that is The Walking Dead all these years. HBO is the best studio in the world right now, IMHO, and with the ND guys heavily involved, I am supremely confident we will get the best possible combination of production values and story.

Dom posa

Where are the inFAMOUS games on ps4? They need a remaster, especially the 1st one. If GoT is bad it will be a massive disappointment bc I still think spiderman would’ve been better if made by sucker punch or they could’ve made more infamous. GoT has to be great

Brandon Soto

If Sony made a Vita 2 or PSP 3 with a regular SD card, people would buy it. You can’t just gift wrap the handheld market to Nintendo.

Michael Miller

Amnesia a Machine for Pigs was actually developed by The Chinese Room. I only make this correction because it was nowhere near as good as The Dark Descent.

Anonymous

How funny would it be if Ellen Page was offered the role for Ellie in the Last of us TV show?

Nathanael Haller

Sorry to hear about this all. College was a bitch to my overall stress levels, but it gets better! I felt so lost last year during my senior year. Always here if you need to talk!

Anonymous

Nice little chat about mental health after a good question. I totally go through that as well. When I'm in good spirits I could play any game you put in front of me. When my mood is down I sit and ponder what I want to play and end up playing nothing.

Anonymous

Got a psp a few days ago and the store doesn't seem to be up

Jason Pettet

Hope everything gets better for you Colin, just know you make our weeks brighter!

Kenneth Oms

For the AO market they can age gate the ao search results to your psn account thus giving psn more user data which they want anyways like all companies. And for it not being on amazon, with all game sales going digital as y’all always say, it would be a win for PlayStation. Let us degenerates spend our money dammit

LastStandMedia

With Coronavirus, it's looking more and more likely this thing ain't coming out this year. =D

Haydyn

I think you guys are a little off the money with the Division 2 but makes sense because you two don't really play it much. Gear 2.0 was a change the wider community have been calling for for a while now. I have 200+ hours across three characters and the gear rework streamlined how gear and talents work. I've seen plenty of people complain about losing their specific build or playstyle without really taking into account that they're now level 30 with a new level cap of 40 and haven't even gotten to the end game content where they can start to play around with gear and gear sets. At first it seems like everything has been taken from you, but after a few hours I was steamrolling through the content. I also found it way easier to wrap my head around how gear works in 2.0 than 1.0 which I found convoluted.

Peter Campbell

I hope Dreams does well. I just bought it and it seems interesting but a real slow burner. Going around what has been created so far is fairly basic. I figure the interesting types will keep going into interesting areas while many will give up after a few Simpsons crappy games. It feels at the moment like a No man's sky type of niche audience. I plan to take the time we all now have thanks to the beer-virus to mess around with the creative tools to see what it can do.

Jordan Goodeye

Getting to replay P.T in dreams was really cool. Not the real game, but in this rare case it was really cool.

Anonymous

Thanks for the advice. I've got a Vita and pstv though I'm sure it's fine on them

B00ch

your pronunciation of Midoriya was funny. Midoriya is my boi. I think the ps2 is the best console ever by far, just the sheer amount of great games and exclusives. good times. also cuphead was easy, JK JK, that game was very hard. i felt so accomplished when i beat it. it's one of the harder games i've played in a while

SteelChevron

On the topic of depression I would generally say that I am a bit jealous of people that can "bounce up" as soon as they start feeling a bit antsy. I suppose I would describe it as social butterfly in the form that "oh, I am a bit bored or 'antsy' I'm just gonna go out and 'force' people to notice me until I'm content again" I have never done anything wrong in my life I demand the attention and aknowledgement. Doesn't really work like that for me!

SteelChevron

1:55:33 I agree with Chris but my problem with 6th gen isn't the graphics all consoles had some awesome graphics: Metroid prime, wind waker, god of war, halo and so on. When I go back and play that gen the problem is more often the control scheme and that's mostly gamecube but overall i think they perfected the control scheme in 7th gen

SirMeliodank

Pulled over to write this. Spanish flu was called this because during the outbreak, in 1918, wartime censors were in place in areas such as; England, Germany, France, the US. Spain was a neutral territory and had ‘media freedom’ so could report on an epidemic that had started, these news reports are what led to Chris believing Spain was ‘hammered’ by it.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, I actually did ask them once why they didn't just paste Trophies over that list, and they said they didn't want to send the game through QA.

LastStandMedia

Possibly. It could also be as simple as they need to get it all onto the books in Q2 for whatever reason. Who knows.

LastStandMedia

I never played that Breath of Fire game. I stopped after III. I did have Skies of Arcadia on both Dreamcast AND GameCube, because I'm a nerd.

LastStandMedia

It's simple: You don't want to force your audience to buy more than one must-have game in a few weeks' time, because many won't. Then prices fall, and they'll buy the game on the flipside. If you allow a good cadence of releases, people pay full price for all of the games. It's basic library management!

LastStandMedia

This is my mom's argument: She'll never play the game, but she's curious about the story, and this will be here way to enjoy it.

LastStandMedia

As I recall, she was salty about how similar Ellie looked to her, so that is probably not going to happen!

LastStandMedia

I think they're gonna have manufacturing issues. I'm thinking both may get delayed.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, the control schemes are caught in a space between. This is what we were discussing more recently in regard to RE4.
