By now, you've undoubtedly heard of the Coronavirus, a lethal illness originating in mainland China that has so far claimed the lives of more than a thousand people. What you may not have considered, however, is how this might affect PlayStation 5. No: We're not kidding. Game consoles are manufactured in Chinese factories, and it's entirely possible that Coronavirus could delay PS5's launch, a possibility so real that even a mainstream investment firm is warning its clients of such an eventuality. Should we really fear such a delay? Would Sony launch a supply-constrained console instead of being late to market? Do people really need to be eating bats to begin with? We discuss. This episode is chock-full of other news, too! Long-time Rockstar creative lead Dan Houser is leaving the studio he helped create, Sony shut down a first party studio that never so much as released a game, BioWare and EA simply won't stop trying to make Anthem happen, and much more. Also: Let's hear from you, dear listener! Has Chris been unexpectedly teaching Colin a thing or two about video games? How come Ninja Theory stopped working with Sony? Will we ever give Yakuza a chance? Should one listener return his old roommate's forgotten PlayStation 2 games, even if he hated that roommate? Let's go deep.

My goal is simple. I will always try to get you to play at least 1 yakuza game. Like I said before you played person 4 I have hope you will play 1 yakuza game

Hopefully there a 1 game limit for the physical copy, and is there a way Patreon have early access to buy the physical game before the public

Yay! This is the thing I needed today.

Good afternoon duders, they are building a Foxconn in southeastern Wisconsin. On another subject, I do not feel badly for the psvr company that was shutdown, 5 years and they don’t have a product to show for it. That is unacceptable in almost all walks of lives, unless your valve of course, and I would not want any of the “talent” in my fictional company. But it does seem as though there isn’t as much talent as in the past to go around anymore, so maybe I would have to.

Speaking of catching something catastrophic from children. I caught hand, foot and mouth disease from my 4 year old son, who caught it from daycare. For any other parents on here, it's no joke. Pretty sure I got it from letting him play Ratchet and Clank with my controller.

Ryan Harvey

Since the early access Dreams you guys made a let's play of is now the full game as of today - will you guys revisit to take a look at the full game that media molecule themselves made for their campaign?

Bats eat mosquitoes. I live in New Brunswick, Canada and outside city limits so we have a lot of black flies and mosquitoes in the summer. We put bat houses in trees because they're great for bug control. The more you know..

Great episode guys! Idk about you y'all, but I live in a post-Colombian universe.

Hey Colin, "Take it, it's yours!" Is said by Achilles in the movie Troy, who is indeed played by Brad Pitt

You're cray if you think the new consoles launch at $500. The current XBox One X is still $500 right now. And the upcoming consoles are supposed to have way better components than even that. I say the new consoles launch at $600. And they still be eating shit at that price point.

Anonymous

Colin's take on GTA 6 breaks my heart but I think he is right. I saw the writing on the wall after 5 didn't get any single player DLC but I've been living in denial.

Alan Ortega-Lopez

I bought 3 copies of Anthem new at 5$, and my little brother had fun with it, but he plays Roblox so what does he know.

Joey Rawlings

I think Sony would be better to release on whatever schedule they do have and go into a shortage. Because of how many PS4's are in the wild, how many Sony 1st party studios don't seem to be ready, and how the coronavirus will possibly affect manufacturing in the short and long term, I think it's a safer play. Sony can launch on time with limited stock and, if the virus is still a problem in Q4, then it'll be understood that manufacturing is slowed due to the virus. Sony would be smart to not force employees to 'come into work' and make consoles - that'd avoid the PR headaches. Would PS5's be scarce? Absolutely. Will PS5's be marked up on eBay, Mercari, and the like? Guaranteed. That's the risk - based on Sony's track record with the PS4, as long as Sony's long term plan is stable, then the console will sell. The PS5's biggest selling point so far, to me, that separates it from the PS4 is the faster loading speeds; aside from that, I can't see what the new hardware is worth $500-600 to upgrade. If it's backward compatible with PS4 games as we think, then that's not a selling point to me. Colin has always said that 'software sells hardware' and typically launch games aren't the best of the consoles' generation. Early adopters and opportunists will buy up the early stock of PS5's, but I think I'm with many fans that will hold off until stock is available 'system selling games' that are exclusive to the PS5 come out.

Joey Rawlings

$600 might work (with a truckload of salt) if both the PS5 and XBSX are released at that price. That said if there was blowback from fans after PS3's price and release, looking at the landscape if console gamers recoiled into Stadia or PC gaming would be worthy of a 'holy moly' at best.

Brent

As for Rockstar games Dan Houser, I think he left by choice and Colin is right that he is super rich and most likely wants to enjoy his time with his family. I don’t think that the writing will suffer as long as they can hire talented writers. Dan was part of a large writing team. He didn’t do all the work himself. Also I don’t think that Rockstar has had very well written games besides RDR and RDR2. GTAV and GTAIV were decently well told stories but I think they will have to set some new horizons with the next game. I do believe GTA6 is and has been in development for many years and we will get a story and hopefully an integrated online mode.

Brent

As for Anthem, I would be compelled to try the game if it was legitimately improved. I never played it before so maybe there’s some chance of getting some new people on board. It it’s funny how EA just doesn’t learn from their mistakes. I don’t know why they insist on prioritizing development on finding ways to insert transactions to build a digital content sales platform instead of building a fun and complete video game first.

Anonymous

Assassins Creed Black Flag was only for the ps4. Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed Rogue for the ps3. So the next AC game can be solely next gen.

LastStandMedia

Yeah... I just think if Rockstar wanted to go down that road, we would have seen GTAV DLC. They're pretty clear the direction they wanna head with that series, but I'd absolutely love to be wrong, because GTA is revolutionary solely for its single-player.

Anonymous

I cannot recommend Yakuza enough. Just play 0. The voice acting is fantastic, even with it being all in Japanese. The story is basically Game of Thrones in 80s Tokyo. All of the characters are interesting. The gameplay is built around having fun, with over-the-top combat and ridiculous mini games spread throughout a vibrant, densely packed world. It starts a little slow, but once it picks up, you're hooked. It's an absolute blast.

LastStandMedia

You may be right, but my counter-argument is that Coronavirus is unlikely to be a problem after the summer. And if it is, we've got bigger fish to fry with the market than PlayStation 5, because China is gonna be absolutely fucked. So, my wonder is based solely on the pipeline being cleared by the end of the year, but Sony merely being behind on manufacturing units, which -- if a hypothetical delay moves into the summer -- will set them back considerably, and for a long time.

LastStandMedia

No one writes games of that size and scope by themselves. That's impossible. The point is: Who was the visionary? Who came up with these stories? Ken Levine didn't write BioShock alone, but it sure as hell wouldn't be BioShock without Ken Levine.

LastStandMedia

The game is so buried under bad press and player hate that if it ever managed to emerge and become "a thing," it would be one of the biggest stories in the industry in some time.

LastStandMedia

Ah yes, that's right. Feel free to submit a correction on the thread this Friday, if it pleases you.

Lee Bull

FF VIII, great choice. Unpopular opinion it's better than VII and IX

Joey Rawlings

The reason that BioWare is doubling down on Anthem instead of Andromeda is probably the same reason GTA5 never got a single-player DLC. There’s more of a return on an investment opportunity with Anthem than Mass Effect; Mass Effect has a massive reputation but in the current games-as-a-service MTX market, Anthem is worth doubling down on if done right. If the gamble fails, then BioWare knows they could probably fall back on what they do best - high quality, story-based single-player games. Dragon Age 4 feels like that fallback plan. This smells like an EA ‘corporate overlord’ decision rather than a BioWare ‘make good’ decision.

Joey Rawlings

Yazuka 0 is the 'start' of the game chronologically, right? The numbering of those games are a tad confusing.

Forrest Hunter

Do you know if the “most downloaded games” list is a compilation of downloads tied to new purchases or ALL downloads the game receives (including re-downloads from people who already own the game)?

Joey Rawlings

Calling it now - the 'beloved' Activision IP that they'll remaster is Skylanders. All of those toys lying around getting dusted off for a high-definition remake or collection of all the previous games. The last Skylanders game was "Imaginators" in 2016, so the timing kinda fits. #MakeToys2LifeGreatAgain

yoo sup c and c the brad pitt movie is troy he says it when they land on the beach to begin the Trojan war

Good Morning C and C: The reason why manufacturing is at risk of being delayed in China is because the government is not allowing people to return to work. Additionally, the Chinese New Year (a 2 week period where nobody in the country is working) was right before the virus outbreak. Companies plan for CNY, but you're generally running lean by its end. I work at a company where we are dealing with this exact same issue; we are about to launch a product, but we can't get enough inventory in the door to effectively launch.

Marcus Brown

Another great episode down the pipeline and I'm ecstatic on the Matty contribution and other great content coming! You spoil us Col. Appreciate ya. Also beware of the bats.

Kenneth Oms

Chris, your start yakuza at yakuza 0, unlike games nowadays the yakuza series goes by numerical value story wise. My brother who is not a fan of heavy Japanese games loved yakuza 0. It made him cry out of laughter and out of the heavy focus on brotherhood.

Cory Towler

Hey Colin. You mentioned MAGA. “Make Anthem Great Again” that insinuates that it was great at one point. It was never great. Okay bye.

Brandon Soto

Ahh, memories of watching porn on the Wii’s Internet Channel

Nick

The movie you were referencing when you said, “Take it! It’s yours!” at around the 23 minute mark is Troy with Brad Pitt. Total classic.

Finn

I URGE you to play Yakuza 0, it will consume your mind. Just play zero and maybe you’ll want to play the rest.

Craig Mcguire

Great episode gents and congrats on the game, the trailer is really great. Although it's not a genre I have any interest in I will be buying the game, will play it, and shit on it all the same (joking) Also shout-out to that guys professor doing God's work

MY BAD, WOAHHHH!

Petre Cismigiu

Hey Colin. Twin breaker is releasing on March 24th and that is too much of a coincidence not to share this with you. 24th of March was the birthday of one of my best friends from childhood. Used to call him Fido. He sadly died in a car crash 3 years ago at the fragile age of just 24. He was a huge fan of yours and we both loved your podcasts and humor. And if he could give a single game a 10, it would've been The Last of Us, just like you did. I felt the need to say this here. May he rest in peace. He would've loved your game, I'm sure.

LastStandMedia

I'm not sure there's gonna be ROI in either direction, but Mass Effect means a whole lot more to EA than Anthem. They should just move on.

LastStandMedia

Glad to hear it, man! Happy to have him doing some stuff. His first video should be next week.

Biv

Hey Colin, so you know, Dreams appears to be a fairly reasonable Platinum.

Thanks for the response on my first inquiry about rogue-likes! Dead Cells is definitely bumped up on my backlog since you guys seemed to like your time with it. And The Division 2 was super cheap so I already bought and downloaded that one hearing you had such a good time with it Colin. Much respect Colin, for the opportunities you create for the people around you with Colin's Last Stand and the warmth you spread along the way. Sometimes a man's gotta do what a man does. And right now, that is appreciating Colin fucking Moriarty.

Hey there, Where is our pop tart tier list?

Daniel Bowen

You mentioned a Triple Point brewery, in Richmond. Were you, perhaps, talking about Triple Crossing? If you are, they have amazing IPAs. Their Falcon Smash is amazing 🍻 If I ever run into you at a brewery in Richmond, first beer's on me.

LastStandMedia

Looks like they're gonna cost about $450 each to manufacture. So we're looking at $500, I think.

Anonymous

I thought Chris put system shock on this 2020 most anticipated game a fews weeks ago and now he said he never knew it was coming out lol

Jack Sibert

There's no world where Sony would have even considered pricing the PS5 at $400 in the first place. Based off approximate specifications that they provided in the Wired interviews- the performance that they're trying to accomplish- native 4k rendering, complete solid state storage, 16 GB DDR3 Ram- it would take somewhere in the neighborhood of $700-$800 for a person to assemble this PC system at retail. With that said, Sony's does buy their components in bulk and receives some discounts from the manufacturers when they do so. If they price the PS5 at $600, they'll probably be able to break even on their manufacturing costs. But my guess is that theyre currently trying to convince their shareholders internally that pricing it at $500 and eating shit like they've never eaten shit before is the right move forward. But yeah, $400 is completely off the table my dude. They may even just keep the PS4 pro in that spot.

Anonymous

Hey Collin. Rumors say the ps5 will be backwards compat. Do you think it’ll only be for PS4 games or do you think we’ll finally be able to download and play our ps1,ps2,ps3, and vita library’s on the big screen? (Download, not psnow)

Conor Wilson

Is this weeks sacred symbols plus not showing up for us freeloaders?

LastStandMedia

PS3 maybe; I doubt it'll go any further back than that. But if I were a betting man, I'd say only PS4.

Conor Wilson

I got it now, thanks Colin! :)

NeO JD

I’ve never thought about the possibility of the Series X being cheaper than the PS5. That’d be wild. I think BioWare can make a looter shooter IF EA actually let them use something other than Frostbite and they had proper direction. Thanks for taking my question. Your launch lineup argument is a good point, but being a “Ubihead” like Chris said, and with the price of the next gen consoles, I don’t know how much people are going to be willing to shell out that fast. I’m looking forward to all those games though.

Nathan Guergis

On the topic of Activision IP’s, I find it amazing that they’ve attempted to revive Guitar Hero this gen, but have completely abandoned the DJ Hero franchise. DJ Hero 2 came out right as live EDM took on a new form and began to explode on a level unseen beforehand. The first game was so good too with mixes by DJ Shadow and songs from Marvin Gaye, Justice, Gorillaz, and Daft Punk. I think a third installment could have an insane amount of potential...

LastStandMedia

It's not too surprising to me, personally. Guitar Hero's revival failed, so DJ Hero wouldn't stand a chance. The age of peripherals is behind us!

Kevin Cooper

Sorry if this has been asked already (loading comments in Patreon sux), but does purchasing a physical copy of Twin Breaker on one platform give us digital access on the other platform? Specifically, would purchasing the physical Vita version include a digital code for PS4?
