Most of you know EA-owned DICE as the Scandinavian creators of the Battlefield series (and the resuscitators of Star Wars Battlefront, too), but tucked quietly away in Los Angeles is a DICE support studio aptly called DICE LA. DICE LA is essentially the remnants of the old Medal of Honor team Danger Close that's since been relegated to secondary status, but it appears all of that's about to change. Electronic Arts has opted to dispatch the creative might of Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella to revitalize and rebrand the dev, with a new game promised for the coming years. Is this a wise move, or is EA getting distracted by shiny objects to the detriment of perhaps its most reliable talent? Let's chat about it. Then: Sony talks PlayStation 5 at CES (kinda), Dragon Quest XII is officially in development, Final Fantasy VII Remake is getting a demo, and much more. Plus: Listener questions galore, and Colin tells Chris he's getting drafted and going to Iran to fight on our behalf. How unfortunate for him.

Finally! I can stop the jitters.

Ryan Rumsey

The new PS I Love You XOXO just posted too. So bizarre. I’ll be staying right here.

Brandon Lahood

Thanks for doing what you do guys! #1 PlayStation podcast on the web.

Forrest Hunter

The part of my Tuesday. PS I Love You XOXO was started up again. Would love to know how you feel about it. Have a great day!

Anonymous

I feel like this should be said, not knowing what Colin has said yet since my episode is downloading. However, you don't have to choose one or the other. Colin will not be mad at you for listening to his old podcast, he will be mad however, if you stop listening to his (I'm making this part up).

Craig Carter

Thanks got addressing the elephant in the room. Sacred symbols is far superior to your previous products and I say that with the utmost sincerity. PS I Love you is just gonna shit out the same kinda funny-like product and the world shall continue to spin. Always have your back Colin and best of luck to those guys, but they get no support from me.. which isn’t much in the grand scheme of things but still. Adios

Dean Redinbaugh

If you're a real PlayStation fan youd listen to both of them at the same time and c l s s s at half speed....

Anonymous

you're a great guy Colin! As someone that has followed you since Beyond, Sacred Symbols is my Playstation podcast.

Jon Barnett

Just wanna say that Violet Beauregard was not in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, she was in A Series of Unfortunate Events, which had at least a dozen books, a movie, and a Netflix series, as opposed to one book and two movies. R.I.P. Gene Wilder.

Honey tastes like flex seal? I'm gonna be honest with you, sounds like somebody served you "honey" that they scraped off the bottom of their car

Jeremy Menear

I haven't been a regular since colin left. I unsubscribed, so I dont see their stuff unless I go looking. However, I do check in from time to time. Just to see what they're up to. As I do like Greg, although, not as much anymore. And you can just tell Kinda Funny lost its shine. It's way to over produced and satured with so many unnecessary things. They're adding way to many new people as well. The focus has shifted from Greg and moved on to way to many other people. I dont get that, greg and colin were the main reasons for the following. And once you get rid of colin and use greg sparingly what are you even left with? I dont get what they're trying to do over there. The revival of ps I love you xoxo is even more baffling, it's not the same product. They should have named it something else. But I guess they're trying to bring people back as it looks like they're following has lessened while colin continues to grow. But it's just not going to work. I definitely won't be listening to it, without Greg AND Colin together. Because it's just not ps i love you without both of them. I'm just glad Colin is staying true to his brand and providing quality content for all of us. And honestly, his content is better than ever in my opinion. Colin, Chris, and of course DAGAN (my favorite) are all we need! :) (Sorry for the long rant, I had to get it off my chest)

Jose Horrach

Your dad is going to have to find another way to hide his movements, because all tolls in NYC are cashless so they take a photo of your license plate every time. And then mail toll bills directly to your home. Some real big brother shit

Kenneth Oms

I wanted to comment about the episode but hearing more of papa moriarty makes me want more episodes about him haha

LastStandMedia

Thanks! We'll probably lose that moniker now that my old show is using the old feed, etc. But... we'll just keep saying it anyway. LOL.

LastStandMedia

No, I'll definitely be mad at you if you listen to PSILY. (Only kidding. Do what you want. <3)

LastStandMedia

Thank you. I know that I wouldn't say anything else, anyway, but I do truly believe Sacred is the best show I've ever been a part of. The center of PlayStation knowledge on the other shows was with me, not the other hosts, who brought other stuff to the table. So that we're able to transfer that to this show and bring Chris' more youthful perspective and comedy makes what I think is the perfect combination. You guys and gals will, of course, be the ultimate decider.

JD

There's a few Knockback episodes about Papa Moriarty and even an episode with him as a guest. Check em out!

I only listen to PS I Love you, for Colin.

Martin

Hey Colin, the Bastard game you were wondering about was Steath Bastard (Stealth Inc on PS) :)

Saulius Vekteris

For me game of a decade would be Witcher 3 or Red dead redemption 2. Those games blew my mind how good they are.

Anonymous

Just gave the first 30 minutes of PSILY, Colin I don’t think you have much to worry about. **Boxing announcer voice**... “AND STILL, THE #1 PLAYSTATION PODCAST...”

Kristen Zwick

Hey Colin, just a heads up that my download of the podcast didn't include the list of supporters at the producer level or higher. Mine cut off right right before that. I'm using the apple podcast app with the RSS download link. No big deal but thought you'd like to know about it!

Sam Dunham

I'm baffled by the complaints about the store. It's not perfect, but it's serviceable. I've literally never had the store not load. Not once. And I've also never seen this "information coming later" message. Though that could be because I've never looked at a game that has that message. But I've never had to test my internet connection unless I've changed something on my network.

Jack Sibert

There is a "zero year" to every decade...it's the year in which the singles digit, or "tenths digit" is a zero... For example- 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020, and so on. This would mean that we are in the "zero year" for the current decade now. The previous decade is definitively over, RIP 2010-2019. Please stop with the blasphemous suggestion that the decade somehow ends in 2021. That would mean you started tracking the previous decade in 2011, which is just weird. 2010-2019 is ten full years, let's move on now haha

Jason Bristol

Hey love the show as always. I planned to write in about the rpgs you plan to play, wanted to give some advice. The Cold Steels series is probably best played on PS4, the Vita version has some bad slow down so just a heads up. I would also like to try to do this challenge but I don’t think I’ll have enough time. Pier Solar was a Genesis made game that I tried and like, which I put in more time but never did. I’ll write in next week, looking forward to the next show!

Kelly Perkins

I never use the store via console, always on their website. This way makes it super simple to find everything you want, 100 item wishlist and an easy way of finding all the ps3 games you wanna redownload without scrolling down a 1000 item download list full of demos themes and pointless avatars to get to that 10 year old game you want. Plus you can get all your ps3 games to automatically download this way.

LastStandMedia

Hey, Dustin is a complete disgrace and messed it up. He sent me a new edit, so it should be fixed. Thank you for your patience!

LastStandMedia

I already popped a Trophy on the Vita version when it launched though. =\ Dustin isn't crazy about it on PS4, so now I'm wary. =(

Anonymous

Hey Col, regarding back compat with the vita on the ps5 do you think there is any chance that the rumored back paddle buttons on the dualshock 5 could emulate the back touch of the vita to bring that library to the ps5?

Jeremy Miller

In regards to the Trophy reward system, Why not scale the reward based Trophy rarity? Say a. 01% plat is worth $1 and a 89% garbage plat like My Name is Mayo is worth 19c and just have it be automated? I still love the idea of Bloodborne giving you a theme or Spiderman giving you a custom avatar for getting the platinum trophy

Anonymous

Was it Stealth Bastard you were thinking of?

TheBufferPiece

Don't judge honey based on what you buy in stores, fresh honey straight from the comb is one of the best things I've ever tasted. You can only get the stuff if you have a family farm nearby that has a bee hive or know someone who has one, so most people will never have the good stuff

LastStandMedia

Possibly, but the back touch pad is a touch pad, not just some buttons, so I don't know how it'd work. Above my paygrade, honestly.

LastStandMedia

I think it's too far gone for them to do anything. The system was great in the beginning. We were stupid for asking for easier Plats.

Alan Ortega-Lopez

Microtransactions should not appear when searching for a game on the ps store!

Hose A Contra Razz

You said the attach rate is about 10 games to each console does that include the free games? I have bought about 5 games and the rest are I got free from Sony.

Nate McKinney

Ah, here it is. The worlds NUMBER 1 and MOST BELOVED, PlayStation podcast. Accept no imitations! It does me good to hear you, gentlemen.

Jack Sibert

The comments section on the new PS I Love You video on YouTube is very heartening. Alot of people miss you Colin.

Nate McKinney

Interesting note: at one point there was a remaster or port of Witcher 1 in development for PS3/360. It was going to be called "Rise of the White Wolf" but got canceled obviously. https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher:_Rise_of_the_White_Wolf

Will Hahn

Kinda Funny: Guess what everyone, we brought PS I Love You XOXO back, and we are getting a bigger studio! CLS: The saga of the poop story may continue. Plus, we are making a video game. CLS: 1 KF: 0

Alvin Banaag

I think Harvey Smith, director of Dishonored could rival Ken Levine. Dishonored 1 & 2 are fantastic games.

Michal Dudic

absolutely. him, ken levine and warren spector is the holy trinity of supremely influential designers.

Forrest Hunter

A JRPG every month? Are we FINALLY getting a Wild Arms Knockback? Come on, brother! Please?

Michal Dudic

Witcher 1 got two sequels so someone must have cared about it

JD

The thing about Witcher 1&2 is that CDPR have already released subsequent "Enhanced Edition" of 1&2 on PC with all DLC and patches for each title. If they ever decide to port them, it'll probably be these Enhanced versions.

JD

I suppose Sony factors in the price you pay for PS+ to get the "free" games.

Nlindz27

With Trophies they should do what Microsoft do. They create gamepass quests where you must do certain quests such as "earn 3 achievements in gears 5" and they will reward you with microsoft points. It's a cool feature that i check out every month to see if there are any quests I'll pursue.

Sam Dunham

Totally with you on the inanity of review scores. When I started a (super tiny) video game review blog a while back (which I have completely ignored for far too long), I decided against scores outside of "Pass, Rent, or Buy." IMHO, that's as granular as a summary needs to be. Anything else seems arbitrary and pointless.

Eric Smith

I am so happy you addressed the kinda funny situation, seeing them bring that back is good but a reminder of why I support you. There is nothing like Sacred Symbols out there. I try and listen to other podcasts and this is the only one I support with monetarily.

Michael Miller

I agree with y’all’s thoughts on PS I Love You keeping its name. It reminds me of when a pornstar retires from the adult industry, but they keep using their stage name on social media only to get mad when someone brings up their pornographic past.

Anonymous

I'm just glad you addressed the elephant in the room and my huge issue... Smelly people from history. I always think of this a when watching entertainment. I also can't get my mind off it when two characters in a movie are whispering in each other's faces. All I can think is, "I wonder how their breath is?" I also have a theory that it's why so many sexual taboos are more acceptable nowadays. I mean, if one is to go down on someone (male or female) I imagine it was much less fun back when people took baths once every few days and gromming/scaping was pretty well unheard of. Let alone tossing someone's salad. 🤢

Ørjan Benjaminsen

Colin, You really should play throught SOMA. It raises some really cool questions about being human that i'd think you'd like. Also its a relative short experience. Gameplaywise its mostly a walking-sim ( which you love) I finished it last night so ca 10h. Just a suggestion.

JD

I cannot sing the praises of SOMA enough! It's a slow burn horror game like no other - existential horror if you will. Also I highly recommend playing SOMA in Safe Mode which was added by the devs after release which removes the annoying hide and seek gameplay and let's you focus on the exploration, puzzles and delving in to the amazing story.

Zack E

The trailer player for the game on its store page in PSN Store is horrendous It’s horrible. It never streams at a good quality whatsoever. It makes the best looking games look like crap. I always just have to go to YouTube on my phone to watch the trailer.

Daniel Schiffer

Witcher 2 was a fantastic game. It was a critical and commercial success. Winning over 50 awards including GOTY and selling 900k copies in its first month and 1.7 million in it's first year. The game is phenomenal and has always been considered one of the great RPGs among the PC gaming community. It holds a candle to any Western RPG that came out at the time and previous. I played it 3 years after its release and still enjoy it now. Witcher 1 wasn't as great but was still a good game and showed potential. Although the gameplay is outdated by today's standards.

Daniel Schiffer

I know everyone says "I feel like we're putting out our best work we've ever done". But you can actually say that and it be true. 2020 is the year for Sacred Symbols! SS+<3

Dan Parsons

A two hour episode with no drop, perfect! (I love the drop really)

NeO JD

While I enjoy the new PSILY, it’s not better than the classic. I enjoy SS as well, but nothing will ever top you and Greg together. You guys at the time were brothers and that’s still podcasting’s biggest tragedy. Game of the Decade I’d say is The Last of Us Colin, you’d beat Chris in a fight anytime. The best Uncharted movie is already on YouTube starring Nathan Fillion. I love BioShock but I’d put Neil Druckmann above Ken Levine. 🤔

Anonymous

Hey guys, So towards the beginning you were talking about how the show is growing and you're being "meaner" to people. You're being funny and authentic, and people recognize it. Nothing is worse than listening to / watching people who are clearly fake, and you two are not that. For example, I watch a lot of streams on Twitch, and the ones I find the worst and don't watch for long are the ones that are trying to make a sterile, and safe environment for everyone to chat in. The best ones are people like you. I watch, for example, a streamer called "MoonMoon". He's about our age (I'm 30), and he just doesn't give a fuck. Yells at chat, calls us cunts, it's great. He's joking, of course, but it's hilarious nonetheless. Point is again, ya'll are real and funny and we love it, don't change c:

Jeremy

Just to annoy Colin I’m one of those people who’s never had any of the network or store issues he describes. And I’ve been on PS4 since launch day. Also just loaded the store in 2 seconds and only typed in D and R into the search and poof there is Dragon Quest 11

Owen

PlayStation store is straight trash. I have stopped using it on my ps4 altogether. I do all my shopping while I’m on my computer at the website. Where it’s still clunky as fuck but at least I can get it to function.

Murray. M

Have you considered Ys 8 for your JRPGs? Probably was my favourite game last year.

Anonymous

Why does my Patreon RSS link download this podcast on Friday when it is posted on Tuesday? Does this happen for others?

Oliver Johnson

Alright, let’s pump the breaks here. I’m not affected by network issues with PSN so while that needs to be fixed for those who are, it’s pretty insane to claim the PlayStation Store is as broken as you described. I hope PS5’s Store is relatively similar with its UI because it’s a Store is actually inclined to pop into every time I get on (my day one version) PS4 because it’s just so easy to see what’s new, what’s on sale, and various recommendations. The Xbox Store is a total dumpster fire and you better watch yourselves before you will that into existence. If you think auto play videos on PS4 is bad, on my OG Xbox it would crash the store. While it’s much better now with the One X, the store is still flooded with ads and has no convenient way to browse or see Sales. Granted, Game pass is so good that I don’t need to even check the store. Anyways, just because PSN has connection issues, it does not mean the store front isn’t solid.

Cammoses87

All I want is Syphon Filter and I feel at this point it’s never gonna happen I feel :(

Zack E

Offline bots are awesome. You can get similar experience even if there is no active online population for the game. I don’t think it’s as difficult as you guys think. Now maybe it’s something a developer doesn’t want to put resources into. I’ve actually been playing Gears of War 2 recently with offline bots in the multiplayer modes. It’s feels fairly similar to the standard experience, and there are difficult settings you can select for the enemies. This game came out in 2008, and allows offline bots for the full suite of MP. Call of duty has allowed this since 2012 or so. I love every bit of allowing bots. If there was an active population for the game, then of course I’d prefer going online vs humans. But no game lasts forever, and yes it’s fun to go back to Black Ops 2 and experience the Domination MP mode vs bots.

Kaz Redclaw

Not having BC to all prior generations wouldn't get me to buy an Xbox 2020 instead of a PS5, but it might make me wait a bit to buy it. Playstation's dodgy BC means that I have to keep more playstation systems active on my systems wall to be able to play my entire library. I have a PS2, which covers PS1 as well, a PS3 that also covers most PS1 games and PSP Mini games, but not PS2. I have a PSTV, that covers PSP and some PS1 games, but not all Vita games, I have a Vita which also covers PSP and some PS1. A PS4, which covers some PS2, but no PS3, PSP, or Vita games... I have to keep every one of these systems active to cover all of the games I have for Playstation. But I only have a Switch, 3DS, and Wii U to cover all of the Nintendo games I have, and I only have an Xbox One S to cover all of the Xbox games I have.

Kaz Redclaw

(Also, PSP BC would probably just be the games you've already purchased for PSP on the PS Store, just like the Vita and PSTV's BC to PSP.)

Daddy Dilkers

In the now confirmed sequel to Twin Breaker, which one of you will be Dip Shit and which will be Bitch Ass?

The Rose Experience

I'm going to suggest you guys use the Rebuild Database function on your PS4 because this PS Store problem really isn't a prevailing one on the PS4. It's far from an ideal store that's wonderful to use but it shouldn't crash or run like absolute garbage, I'm going to say it's a you problem in that respect. Sometimes it will slow if your PS4 is continually coming off of Rest Mode but that's nothing a clean restart shouldn't fix so if it's still running like crap you need to Rebuild which will re-order your HDD from all that installing/uninstalling we all do. Trust me, this will fix it, the PS Store really isn't as horrendous as you and Chris are making it sound.

Joseph Losinno

I totally agree the PS store doesnt work. This whole PS4 lifecycle I have been using the store on Google Chrome to make purchases and initiate downloads

LastStandMedia

We just wanna make great content for you guys and gals to enjoy. Never understood the obsession with studio space, even when I was there.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, I think they could do something like this and have full control by keeping it all within the first and second parties.

LastStandMedia

I really just like "Play" or "Skip" at most... but even then, I think the devil is in the details.

LastStandMedia

I appreciate the kind words, but think about Chris when you say something like this. I mean, I think Chris is doing an awesome job, and I think our chemistry far exceeds that of mine with Greg's after 80 episodes. But that'll be up to you to decide. Thanks for your support!

LastStandMedia

We're also rarely mean while meaning it, if that makes sense. We just think it's funny. We're both massive curmudgeons.

LastStandMedia

It's definitely as broken as I describe, and has been since PS4 launched. I know I play up the "I don't know anything about tech" thing, but I'm not stupid. LOL.

LastStandMedia

It's probably not LITERALLY difficult, but to make it meaningfully function, I imagine it's quite difficult.

LastStandMedia

I hope they have something positive to say about it when the console is officially revealed.

Orion88

I actually did like Witcher 1 and 2! A point that I think will loop in with an earlier comment about browsing on the Playstation Store, I remember being on Steam one day in 2009/2010, looking for a new game and the Witcher randomly popped up as an option so I bought it. LOVED it, and purchased Witcher 2 as soon as it released, also on steam. Ironically, I never played Witcher 3 until this year because all the hype turned me off as I felt I was a true believer from the start! Anyway, you can chalk up my Witcher fandom to random browsing on Steam.

Joey Rawlings

Why were name changes so late to the game and finicky when announced? My logic is that Sony didn't (and hasn't) invested a lot of time in looking through their players' eyes and tried to make things better with quality of life upgrades and focusing more on big, exclusive IP.

Oliver Johnson

Yeah, I'm sure it's broken as in, not functioning properly, but the conversation spilled into the actual design and UI and that's the part of the PS Store that I do support.

Kevin Cooper

Oh man... The PlayStation Store. It is admittedly leaps and bounds better than it was on the PS3, but it still has a lot of headaches. Nothing aggravates me more than browsing a list of 500+ games in the Deals section, only to have the store bump you all the way back to the top of the list because you decided to view a trailer for a game you're interested in. That is, if the trailer decides to even load -- as you mentioned.
