In 1897, a most unusual British novel was written by an at-the-time unknown author named Bram Stoker. It was simply called Dracula, and for most western readers, it was their introduction into the centuries-long mythology, mysticism, and straight-up horror stories coming from Eastern Europe and surrounding environs, tales of men and women who would feast on the blood of others, and who may even be immortal. Stoker's novel isn't only important in the history of western fiction, but especially vital in the development of nerd culture, video games, and more. Even if you've not read it (and you should!), understanding just how much hails from this book is important for any dork. So press play freely, and of your own will, and away to the Carpathians we'll go...

2022-01-24 06:46:45 Sorry for the five hour delay on this week's episode. Due to a scheduling issue, Dagan and I could only record last night. Instead of asking Dustin to stay up overnight to edit and hit the 9a PT, I told him to just edit it during his normal day, which he did. Thank you for understanding! <3

Next time you get the cereal mix frankenberry and count chocula into one bowl, it's insanely good, chocolate covered strawberry

Damn, I’m halfway through a book right now, and I have the strongest urge to put it down and reread Dracula for the umpteenth time...

Another fantastic episode, I almost forgot I was doing year-end inventory all day. Thanks for taking me on the journey gentlemen, always a pleasure. I don't believe I've ever read the original, but I think it's time to add it to the list. Also the Netflix Castlevania is AMAZING, it blew my freaking mind how amazing that adaptation is.

Nate McKinney

Great episode. Made me want to re-read the book. On the Carmilla issue. In Castlevania lore she is a vampire and boss character in several games. In the Netflix series she is one of Dracula's generals in season 2, and survives to have what will (presumably) be a large role as an antagonist in season 3. Here's her character Wiki page https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Carmilla

I’m not very steeped in Dracula fiction or lore or anything so this was really informative and interesting to learn about from my perspective.

I would pay good money to watch you two run through the first three Castlevania games.

I liked this knock back. Back in October i played the anniversary collection. It had me doing research as well. As Nate McKinney in this thread has mentioned, Carmilla has an interesting rabbit hole. Outside of the games the stories about her supposedly are previvious to Bram's Novel. Yet Carmilla is linked to Dracula. Interesting stuff.

Gonna have to both read the book and watch the movie now in that order. Been watching cringe playlists for the last few hours and the dude talking about taking shits and catching them with his hands(with a tissue at least) thinking that was the proper way, is where I have to call it quits.

Is this the first book-related KnockBack? If so, we need more of them. The discussion of the writing style, imagery, and all the other literary-specific aspects was awesome.

The title of the movie is Let Me In. The girl who plays the vampire is the one from kick ass. The movie is really great. Definitely recommend it.

It's so awesome. Shockingly so. Glad to hear from Dagan that it's getting a larger budget.

I completely agree, I caught me 1000% by surprise and I can't wait for more. (also loved that I didn't have to search the internet to see if another season would happen since the last shot of the show is a 'splash screen' saying they have a deal worked out)

This is one I really want to look into as well. I couldn't recall the movie when I first heard about it a long while back, but as soon as I heard them mention the title here I stopped in my tracks as if I was suddenly arrested by it, I knew...this was 'that' movie, haha.

Check out Brian Lumley’s Necroscope series. Especially the Blood Wars trilogy. A great take on vampire mythos

Love the Vampire Hunter D shout outs. Fun fact I won a hardcover first edition of the first novel about 10 years ago from the VHD website. I assume no one else entered haha but it's an awesome piece. The 2nd movie was okay, I've read all 27 of the books and the new comic is great!

LastStandMedia

I've never seen Vampire Hunter D, I don't think. My good friend was really into it growing up... and Dagan, obviously.

I have read this book...... great discussion. I feel like you skipped or missed Dracula himself in terms of his central conflict. He felt that his condition made him irreconcilable to God. I found this a powerful metaphor for the sheer number of humans who feel their nature has them at odds and equally irreconcilable to God... believe themselves damned. Also - you must, MUST, read Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles. Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned (ignore the horrible movie), Tale of the Body Thief and Memnoch the Devil.
