For as long as there have been video games, there have been remakes of video games. Today, some five decades into the history of our industry, the market for rereleases and remasters is thriving, and some of players' most-anticipated games -- like Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake -- are old products made new. To celebrate our love of the classics, let's take some time to go over our 10 most wanted remakes, games that can be served best by not only being repackaged, but reimagined entirely. And fear not: We have (literally) dozens of your ideas in here, too. THQ Nordic, are you listening?!

Honestly all I want to see regarding FF6 is on the same engine as octopath traveller

Elijah VanderSande

God I know it’s really not old or in need of a full remake, but why the fuck isn’t there a sly cooper collection on PS4? 2 is so timeless to me and I want to experience it on new hardware. I know they released a collection on PS3 but I think they would fit perfectly right on my PS4.

Josh Moore

Dino Crisis needs to happen. Get on it, Capcom.

The name is real, the first day of school was always a treat. Thank you for the great episode!

Forrest Hunter

Great episode! Slight correction on Parasite Eve: the game is actually a sequel to a Japanese novel written by a pharmacologist named Hideaki Sena. The only reason I bring it up is because I think the author being in the medical field is pretty cool and lends some authority to the admittedly dubious science presented in the game.

My man Colin with the clutch pod, thought I had ran thru all of them this morning. I'm heading to work now and hit that refresh and wouldn't you know it a fucking new pod good stuff man

LastStandMedia

I could dig that. A lot of the early footage I saw of the game way back when looked a lot like Narshe...

Interesting pulls in this episode, I enjoyed it. Just a note, when you were discussing Def Jam and fighting games, Colin asked where were the games like Samurai Shodown. There is a new Samurai Shodown game on PS4 that SNK released earlier this year and it is really excellent. It had really high EVO turnout but I forgive anyone that’s not into the FGC for not knowing about it. Absolutely worth checking out if you like simplified and incredibly tense 4 button fighting games.

Critical feedback: this episode was great. I like that the audience write-ins pretty much led the latter half of the show’s discussion, and I don’t think that an episode should be longer than it needs to, but the hour and a half long episodes feel much better than the 55min ones when you can manage it, especially when you have so much audience input. Felt engaged. Well done!

CORRECTION! Dart never actually made it into Playstation Allstars, he was supposed to be a dlc character bit it was scrapped.

"I think I AM autistic" LMFAO just lost it while sitting at my desk

Great episode, made me fantasize about all kinds of games I'd want to see again. I'm glad KotOR got a mention, I'll be eternally grumpy that the stars aligned for Bioware to make another one once EA got the Star Wars license and they ended up doing fuck all with it (even if it isn't the same Bioware). I should mention something interesting tho, the guy who, at least around when they got the license, was in charge of star wars projects at EA was a friend of the family and I actually asked him about this. At the time he said they were considering it, but Disney hadn't decided what from the old EU to include in their canon and what they intended to toss, so they had no idea if the KOTOR storyline could ever be revisited. It's possible this is what's keeping the series from getting touched even today, especially if Disney is thinking about doing something in that era. Interestingly tho, KOTOR 2 (my favorite rpg and probably favorite game ever) got a very random overhaul on PC and Mac around two years ago that included 4k textures and resolution support, achievements, and even baked in Dualshock 4 support with proper playstation button prompts, so there's SOME amount of life in the series somewhere.

“Where are the Samurai Showdowns?” didn’t one JUST come out? Unless you meant that as a generality, as in games of that ilk. Would be curious to hear if that’s what you meant, Colin. Great episode as always 👍

Context Should Matter

I would love a new breathe of fire, advance wars and bloody roar. I loved bloody roar back in the day but unfortunately hudson was bought out and I think the IP is dead now.

Mr. Joanna Dark

I was just thinking, what if, the reason Death Stranding has been so cryptic. Is because at the end as credits roll. We find out Cipher has had Solid Snake trapped in his mind, having to live as Norman Reedus. Then the title on screen shows Tactical Ghostbusting action Metal Gear Solid 6: Ghosts of the Patriots! Mic drop lol lol

Luke Farinella

Cyber Shadow!!!! It is basically what you are asking for Colin.

Luke Farinella

I’d kill for a FF7-esque remake of Chrono Trigger.

Josh Walker

The one Crystal Dynamics game that needs a remake/remaster is their 2003 game Whiplash. Am I the only one who thoroughly enjoyed this game or played it? If this game ever sees the light of day again, I can die happy.

Mr. Joanna Dark

I want a Metal Gear remake of 1 or 2, in the fox engine. Having those games from the Nes modernized, would be awesome. I would also take a legacy of kain

As it wasn't on the podcast (and I missed the questions thread), SOCOM 2 deserves a mention. Such a huge game at the time with a hardcore fanbase that played it, many of whom went on to become part of the foundation of the PSN community. It'd be an ongoing shooter exclusive which Sony lacks, providing potential for in-game purchases, plus eSports and Twitch coverage, similar to Rainbow Six Siege. It'd also bring back many of the players that jumped onto Xbox 360 or PC instead of PS3 at first due to the better online options at the time (and the poor sequels). It'd be an ideal launch lineup game for the PS5 now that it's been ignored for the PS4 generation. Well, one can dream..

TheBufferPiece

I'm one of the few who's played all the main Persona games. The first 3 persona games (P1, P2:IS, and P2:EP) played very differently than 3, 4, and 5. They weren't really high school stimulators like the newer ones (but they still had high schoolers). The first 3 were more traditional RPGs. They did get PSP remakes, but the PSP version of the 2nd P2 never made it west while the PS1 version of the 1st P2 didn't make it west so the only way to play them both on one system is with either the PSP or the Vita (they're both available as classics). Those games are massively due for another remake. P2:IS and P2:EP are the best of the bunch and I know you're tired of hearing this, but I've thought this since Beyond: if there were any Persona games you'd like it's the Persona 2 duology (and they feel right at home on the Vita).

Steve hamilton

Not only did 1080 and SSX exist at the same time but there were also at least 3 Cool Boarders games in the same time period.

LastStandMedia

I actually knew that. I suppose I should have been more specific: Where are they generally.

LastStandMedia

Awesome! Thank you for your feedback. I wanna shoot for 45-60 minutes at minimum for these episodes, but they should go as long as they need to... as you can see!

LastStandMedia

When it comes to KOTOR, it's surprising that EA hasn't tried to do a third one in this new generation of EA-Disney collaboration... and maybe they will!

LastStandMedia

As I recall, a Breath of Fire game came to mobile in Japan in the last couple of years. =\

LastStandMedia

It's funny that SOCOM continues to have such a hardcore fanbase. What happened to that H-Hour game?

Kenneth Oms

KOTOR 2 needs to be remade. Obsidian was made to abandon a lot of content for it by Lucas arts, so the devs released all the content as patches for the modding community. So if you want to play the complete KOTOR 2 it has to be done on PC. BioWare finished the KOTOR story through the mmo which is why they never made a KOTOR 3, to many people’s disappointment.

Nlindz27

Nobody said Silent Hill? I'd love to see the first 2 get the resi 2 treatment.

Brent

The funny thing is that with PC and emulators the need for many “up-res” is doable without re-releasing.

Anonymous

Late to the convo. But Bloody Roar.

Marcus Brown

Love all these inquiries, I hope they all happen.

Metal gear solid got a remake on the GameCube if you get the hdmi converter it actually plays and looks amazing

Danny Akenson

In regards to the Humongous Entertainment games, they're planning on releasing nearly their entire catalogue on the PS4, with the exception being the Backyard Sports games, as they sold the rights to them. They announced the release date as this year, but I'm unsure of whether or not they'll hit that.

Danny Akenson

Also, most Persona fans have played Persona 3, but not Persona 1 or 2 (which was released in two parts). Persona 3 was the turning point for the series in that it introduced the social link feature that has made the series popular. I'm currently about half-way through Persona 2: Innocent Sin and find it good, but it's definitely not as good as 3-5.

Alex Lawrence

Missed this one cuz I've been busy with school but this is the epitome of what Ss+ episodes that aren't spoilercasts can be

Alex Lawrence

That's cool, but kinda stinks cuz the sports games are what I and I assume others remember fondly

Kevin Cooper

RE: Myst. On the PS4 you'll find a game called Obduction, which was created by many of the original team members from Myst. It is a VR game first and foremost, but it can also be played with the Dualshock 4 as a traditional puzzle game/walking simulator. The game has its flaws, but it is worth checking out for those in search of a similar world.
