Obsidian's all-new open world RPG The Outer Worlds is a blatant (and in some ways even shameless) ode to its 2010 cult hit Fallout: New Vegas... and it should come as no surprise that it's pretty damn good. So let's spend some time talking about why, and celebrate the many things it does so very right. But let's also not neglect the news! The Last of Us: Part II has been delayed, Ubisoft admits its recent critical and commercial reception has been tepid, Fallout 76 gets perhaps the most unpopular subscription service ever concocted, and WWE 2K20 is an unmitigated disaster. Plus: Audience questions! What's the specific definition of Metroidvania? Is 3D audio here to stay? Is anyone else experiencing inconsistent performance on PS4 Pro? Has Chris really never eaten corn-on-the-cob? All of that and more on the other side of the play button.

My body is ready for some Outer Worlds talk 😩

Joey Finelli

Outer worlds is my game of the year.

Mitch Trubisky’s Number 2 Fan

colin you gotta bring back the friend of the week. i have every trophy in dying light except for the online ones and i don’t have 3 friends who play that game

Devon McCarty

"They've proven that there's a slight chance that you can die by waking up too quickly. Isn't that great!?" - Chris This is the only Podcast that understands me.

Adam Thiry

Over 2 hours. I like that. Let's get listening

Anonymous

Colin and Chris, that was in fact all I meant to ask, I wanted to know how you two fine gentlemen were doing. But you did get my laziness down to a T.

Anonymous

2 hours?!? My boner is ready 😎

Kenneth Oms

I’ve been enjoying outer worlds as well. Super Nova difficulty has really helped me enjoy playing the charisma type, and because my companions can die permanently I try to play the game smarter as opposed to fall out where I just go crazy. I agree the corporations are evil hammering on and on is too much. Even in the opening world they make you seem like siding with Corp is a bad move but also the better move? It was weird.

Juan Paolini

I'm loving The Outer Worlds, too! The writing and characters are so good and having smaller maps to explore doesn't fill me with OCD stress (as much). I just have a couple of criticisms: - They recreated the feel of Fallout games almost perfectly. However, the game runs great and I haven't had any Bethesda bugs. WTF guys? - I have these extra 100$/year lying around that I want to give to Obsidian and there's just no option to do this.

Craig Carter

Since you guys mentioned the movie Annihilation you should put it on the list and give it a watch. One of the best suspense/horror/sci-fi movies of recent memory.. sure you’d love it!

Anonymous

Colin is there anyway you could mention to patreon that their app is awful to use? I can't download this podcast at all, and there's no way to sort anything. The app makes me want to delete my patreon account and become a freeloader.

Andrew

I am keen for a new friend of the week segment too !

FitzIsCoy

Hey Colin and Chris, in support of that one question that asked "How are you guys doing?". I can totally see how that happened and I have given up on trying to start a new paragraph on patreon. I once tried submitting a comment here with a space between my intro,"hey colin and chris" and the meat of my question, however none of the methods of creating a space worked for me. "Enter" and "Alt+Enter" ... Not sure if there's other methods, but that's it. I'm done.

Adam Barnes

I was washing the dishes when that pregnant woman question was asked and I lost it. Well done, sir. That was sensational

Juan Paolini

Normally "Shift+Enter" works for me. Another annoying thing is when a comment is long enough it starts to get cut by the dialog box on the top. It would be cool if it adapted to the length of the text and someone could read all the way through without having to go line by line.

Adam Barnes

This excites me! However... my backlog was already 10+ games and then I bought Breakpoint, and then my girlfriend bought me Control and Modern Warfare.. There isn’t enough time!

Luke Bernhard

The stem "Crypto" just means secret. I don't know shit about the currency, just the grammar.

Andres

ffs Colin stop doing those screenshot compilation tweets about the absolute morons who hate on you and your platform for no reason. I implore you to just IGNORE them like everyone else. It's just Twitter... you don't need to defend your reality. You can see in the threads that at worst it leads to conflicting debates between your followers and them and for what... no one ever ends up conceding or understanding the other. Like you've mentioned before - time is such a valuable currency - did those couple of minutes on twitter responding, compiling the screenshots, etc. really pay off? Please finish Resident Evil 2.

Caleb Greer

“Friend of the Week” (though you could call it something else) should come back, I think. It’s a nice service for people, and it takes like 15 seconds in the show if you don’t linger on it. Shows goodwill to the audience when you’re helping some dude out and bringing people together.

Real Radec

Sir Dan one of the worst characters? Love ya but git gud. Watch him be top tier in the spiritual PSAS successor.

hugplx

To make a top tier WRPG you need to nail two things, Characters/Story/Dialogue and highly customisable and fluid RPG mechanics. Of the two, the latter is much simpler to nail imo. Given that, I think Naughty Dog could absolutely crush in that genre if they ever saw the desire to. I'd love to see them try it, and to see them tackle something different.

Sony’s 3D Audio is similar to Atmos. Where sounds are rendered as objects not channels. It is the future of game audio which is why the PS5 will force all games to support 3D ray traced audio.

Anonymous

The PS9 commercial aired around the launch of PS2 not PS3.

Context Should Matter

I love Helldivers. I enjoyed the audio books too. Arrowhead is currently working on another unannounced game. I hope it's helldivers 2

Dre Rams

Looking forward to listening CnC!

Jake H.

Hey Colin, near the end you mentioned that Medievil wasn’t on disc but I actually got a physical copy of it. Just thought you should know for all the lovers of physical media out there.

Kevin Sullivan

The hard working men and women of America deserve a four player let's play of Helldivers featuring you, Chris, Dagan, and Tom Sweeney.

Jeremy Miller

I asked the question and already got some people messaging me offering help. It really helps and hopefully more people submit.

Jeremy Miller

Hey Colin, thank you for the PSN shoutout! I've already had a few people messaging me offering help. Some people are also showing support for it returning. I even thought of some names... - Colins Charity Case -Sacred Symbols Supporter - SOS: SYMBOLS OFFERING SUPPORT

Jose Horrach

I may be in the minority, but I am HYPED for Spookys House of Jumpscares. Its much better than it should be

Caleb Peacock

Never heard chris laugh so hard when Colin was talking about D Trump dunking on a dead isis leader lmao.

To the person who brought up poor performance for some games on PS4 Pro. Check if Boost Mode is on, older games do not like it, if it is on turn it off and the game should run fine. You can find it under system settings. I know I noticed it with the Borderlands remaster.

Dan Nolin

Chris, you said that Destiny was the last game you bought on physical disc... however, I know this to be untrue. One year ago you purchased the Marvel’s Spider-Man edition of the PlayStation Pro which came with a disc copy of the game. This leads me to my question: why, on God’s green earth, do the special edition consoles that Sony puts out come with a physical copy of the game?!?! I see no business reason for this to happen. For much cheaper they could just include a code (what Microsoft does) and I don’t see how anyone could complain.

Devon McCarty

PlayStation's Sharefactory is why I think "In Dreams" will fail overall. I'm a video editor. I've spent the past almost three years cranking out videos for the marketing department of the company I work for. To do that, I spend 90% of my time in Adobe Premiere, and the other 10% in Audition and After Effects. So when they launched ShareFactory, I remember thinking, "Oh cool, a native video editor!" Except, sharefactory is fuckin garbage to use if you've spent any real-time in video editing software. It's hard to understand and very clunky to use. I bet that when it comes to video game design, the User Interface of In Dreams will pale in comparison to actual video game design tools that actual editors use. But, I fully expect there to be a handful of people who can't afford the type of rig and hardware to do the level of game design they want, and to use In Dreams as a way to realize their dreams at a fraction of the cost. Creativity, like life, will find a way.

Forrest Hunter

Chris didn't laugh at the awesome Polyphony joke. Time for a new co-host... :-P

NeO JD

Chris has never eaten corn on the cob? As a fellow bootleg Hispanic, I find this odd. 🤔

GameSimp

Either pro runs until dawn HORRIBLY or the game itself runs poorly. I’ve only played the game on the pro, and the frame rate was 15fps most times, but would randomly switch to 60fps sometimes. I know it’s the game and not the console because I haven’t had this issue with literally anything else.

Drew Sleezer

As a resident mega nerd who plays PC primarily, it should be noted that digital games do have the capability for “trade-in’s” of sorts. Steam has a refund service for customers who would like their money back. While this isn’t necessarily a trade-in, it does prove that there is a possibility for a service like this in future.

B

For the person asking about games with 3d audio. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice used it fantastically

LastStandMedia

I've mentioned it many times. If you're having specific issues, I'm glad to try and help. DM me!

LastStandMedia

I feel like Naughty Dog can't do an open world game. They'd have to sacrifice polish, and they can't do it.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, that's my concern as well. If you're used to using one of these famous engines, are you really going to use Dreams?

Benito

Go watch the digital foundry for Control. they go over the Pro versions problems

Chris

Hey guys! I adventured to buy the outer worlds yesterday after hearing your glowing recommendations. But after visiting all 4 of my local supermarkets to my horror I could not get a copy as it wasn’t even stocked. Which generally means in the UK it has not charted in the top 10. For context I could buy medievil and even control. Do you think the outer worlds could bomb or is this a game that could have a long sales tail after the fall once people have had hands on and forgot about modern warfare

LastStandMedia

Seems a little harsh, considering one of my favorite games (BioShock) is a comprehensive takedown of one of my favorite authors (Ayn Rand). The Outer Worlds is heavy-handed. It's interesting, and I like the characters, but subtly would help me care more.

LastStandMedia

I think the game is probably doing great, but I've not heard anything about sales yet. Part of the reason it may be hard to find is because of who published it. They simply might not have the reach. Just one idea.

Ethan Barbee

I would actually really dig a Friend-of-the-Week sort of thing. I know it’s probably gimmicky, or too similar to your previous ventures, but I used to really enjoy those segments and I’d always love new ways to connect to the community through actually playing games.

Anonymous

You spoke about how you'd like members of the industry to get together to create proper definitions for terms such as 'Metroidvania' and 'Roguelike'. Well, it so happens that this has actually happened already, for roguelike games at least. In 2008 a group of developers got together in Berlin to discuss what defines a roguelike game, and the definition that came out of this is now known as the ‘Berlin Interpretation’. Not to get too in the weeds, but they devised a set of ‘high value’ traits and ‘low value’ traits, meaning high value traits are essential, and low value traits are simply common among a lot of roguelikes. Examples of high value traits would be random world generation and hack ‘n’ slash elements, and low value traits would be elements such as dungeons and a tactical challenge. Games that don’t fit the criteria of the Berlin Interpretation are generally considered rogue-inspired or, more commonly, roguelite. There are criticisms to be made toward the Berlin Interpretation and the idea of creating guidelines for a genre in general, as it can limit developers who want to experiment but don’t want to risk being labelled as a ‘lite’ version or not as valid as their contemporaries. Just thought I’d share this considering it was brought up and sorry for the length lmao

Watch Ergo Proxy

Believe it or not, Borderlands 3 actually does run better on base PS4 than PS4 Pro. Not sure about Control, but I've seen the benchmarks for BL3, it's unreal.

John the Nabo

Not sure if i should post a clarification here or on the next episode questions thread, so i'll post in both just in case. The Genre of "Rogue-like" is actually very specific, having high and low factor values that define it. Some of the high value factors are: - Permadeath - Random Environment generation - Turn-based actions - The world have to be grid-based - The game have to be Non-modal (every action can be made at any point in the game) There are more items on this list, so the genre is very specific and as of late, some people define games like The binding of isaac and Dead Cells by "Rogue-Lite" because they dont fit all the definitions of a rogue-like.

John the Nabo

I only ever had a ps4 pro, but i did play some games on the base ps4 and the pro always seemed like a step up in every case.

Nicholai

I like the segment of sharing a person who needs psn friends

Oliver Johnson

I have to say, I take umbrage with the comment about Xbox live being better than PSN. I get that you guys have connection issues with the store but the UI is probably the best there has ever been on a console. Xbox’s UI is a joke. It’s so frustrating how often their apps don’t work. When opening a game in the store it immediately plays a trailer for the game that freezes the interface. Xbox can’t even open games offline which is a huge problem because it often has issues connecting. I’m genuinely fearful that the PS5 will mess with the UI. Just make its connection better.

Kaz Redclaw

The only way that you get to billions of damage in Disgaea games is if you're deep in the post-game for them. Usually you only need to get to around level 70-120 or so to finish the storylines for these games, and you're usually doing less than a million damage at those levels. Billions of damage is stuff you get to when you've reincarnated a few times at level 9999. It's a game designed to be reasonably easy to complete but has a ton of extra stuff for people who just want to pour hundreds of hours in.

JusticeSoulTuna

Great content as always gentlemen

Kaz Redclaw

Well, I just said "less than a million" I looked at a video of someone finishing off the last boss of Disgaea 4, and the combo that killed the final boss was 17 attacks that totaled only about 46 thousand damage adding all of them up. I don't remember how much each final boss has, but that seems to be around the range.
