By the early '90s, Disney's much-vaunted animation revival was in full swing. The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast had the company buzzing, yet the decade still had much, much more in store. In late 1992, Aladdin joined the roster, packing a rock-solid cast of voice actors helmed by comedian Robin Williams. Yet, while Williams' ad-libbed performance as Genie is the most celebrated part of the film (and the way Disney treated him perhaps the most notorious), a wonderful crew of animators worked tirelessly to bring the world of Agrabah to life. So let's take a step back and remember a movie from the very thick of the so-called Disney Renaissance, and remember why it was so special to begin with.

Capcom’s Aladdin trumps all!

Every Thursday I get excited for the Parks & Rec episode, hopefully next week!

I came here for the same question. Always love the tv show knockbacks best and parks and rec might be my number one. I’ve been patient week after week when it doesn’t show up. BUT I WANT IT NOW! Kidding of course, just looking forward to when it does post.

Knockback is the greatest Podcast, and it's not even close. Thursday really is the best.

As a kid Jasmine was my first big crush haha. She was fit and boy did she know it =) Another great episode, thanks Colin!

This was very fun! Aladdin is a classic. I wonder if you guy's will consider doing the live action one as well?

One step ahead of the hit men...

As a kid, Aladdin was one of my favorite movies! I’m excited to watch it tonight after listening to this episode. I want to see if it holds up to my memories or if I see in in a more critical light.

Fun fact: Tim Allen was arrested for possession of coke in my hometown of Kalamazoo Michigan. A rite of passage for kids from when I was in grade school was finding out the guy from the Santa clause movies was an infamous drug lord

My childhood nostalgia took control! I could definitely see the things you guys pointed out about the magic carpet and Cave of Wonders. However as soon as Genie made his appearance, my inner child laughed at all the stupid jokes and sang along with all the songs. I think I appreciate Genie as a character even more now after this episode. The jokes do date the movie in a way other Disney classics do not, but knowing it was mostly improvised made me enjoy it even more!

To your point on when people didn’t recycle in like the Seventies and shit: I live in Northwest Louisiana, and we do no have recycling bins. The city provides none, and they take none (my town has about 80,000 people, right next to Shreveport). Everything’s just thrown away. Visited San Francisco and was mildly upset there were like 3 separate cans everywhere with pictures for each and I was like “The fuck’s goin on here? Where’s the >trashcan<.”

Jonathon H

This garbage bin story hits home hard. Every Friday when I put the trash out it reminded of the bin that used to be but someone swapped mine with this herpes infested, no handled, broken trash bin. EDIT: In FL, we have recycle bins but maybe 3 out of 10 people use them. It’s still the 70’s here.

If you're interested in the economics behind the recycling industry then there's a good Planet Money podcast episode on it (episode 926). China has historically been the largest recycling market but they've recently changed their policies and now costs have skyrocketed, making it largely cost prohibitive to send recyclables to China to process (around $200 per ton to recycle while it can be land filled for $30). So most of the garbage we put in the recycling bin just ends up being treated as regular garbage and put in a landfill. Oddly though it might be better for the environment to just landfill the garbage if all the externalities associated with recycling (water use / heat etc) are accounted for. Crazy...

Loved this movie. It's really what made me fall in love with Robin Williams as a kid. One of the most mind blowing things that strike me about this movie/franchise, with him improvising most of it, I read that Disney has so much unused material of his that they could make a 4th movie. And they had intended on doing so, but a clause in Robin's will said unused material of his couldn't be released or sold for like 50 years or something. So there's all this unused Genie material just sitting in a vault at Disney. Pretty interesting shit. I miss Robin Williams a lot.

So where I live and grew up we didn't have recycling. Even today it's actually harder to recycle then not. Everything goes in the garbage that's all I have ever known. Just thought that was interesting.

LastStandMedia

There's such a thing as too many cans, I think. I like "garbage" and "recycling" and we can just leave it there.

Omfg, When you guys started talking about movie video games I immediately thought about the weird adventure Casper game on original PlayStation! Have you ever played that Casper game? Just wondering! Great episode!

I'm in Baton Rouge currently for work. 100% agree Caleb. I will say this. Do some research on recycling. A lot of it is being dumped in landfills. Ever since China started buying our used plastics in mass, the recycling economy has tanked. There are some interesting podcasts about it.

100% agree with Rob. That episode was awesome. Planet Money is an amazing podcast in general.

2022-01-24 08:13:47 The Thief & The Cobbler is one of the greatest stories to do with entertainment I've ever learned about. I was so infatuated with it that I went looking for the most complete version available & low and behold a dedicated group of fans put together a compilation of sorts called "The Recobbled Cut" that more or less makes up a finished film. I really wanted to give my computer teacher in high school this collector's edition documentary on the movie, but I was trying to be too cool in those days so I never did.
