Every month, our lovely Patreon audience gets to vote on a topic we cover here on KnockBack, and today, we deliver one such episode. Batman made his comic book debut all the way back in 1939, and his amazing staying power is due, in part, to the exceptional number of ways DC has allowed him to be portrayed. Perhaps one of Batman's most iconic portrayals, however, is in cartoon form. Batman: The Animated Series -- which initially ran from 1992 through 1995 -- is a stellar piece of art, an accessible-yet-deep look at all the Batman franchise has to offer. From its portrayal of Gotham to its amazing villains (to its treatment of Batman/Bruce!), Batman: The Animated Series has earned its sterling reputation. So allow us to be your billionaire caretaker, and you our boy ward, and let's learn a thing or two about The Bat-Man.

Good topic, but the 90's Spider-Man was better imo.

I’ve been waiting for this one to come for aaaages! Feels like ages since it was announced, top work boys 👍🏻

I can't believe the two of you have got the balls to talk shit on Street Fighter 3rd strike... FOOLS!

Jason Stafford

You guys are right in my wheelhouse this episode. As a hardcore Batman fan of 40 years, it'll be fun to listen to you two talk about not only the only superhero you actually like, but the best representation of the character in any media outside of comics ever. No other media has ever captured all of his facets like this one did. FYI: All episodes are streaming as HD remasters on DC Universe

Uncle Walter/Ben Folds reference!

Hey DM . Amorphous Dad Bod here. Where’s the credit for my part in Mark commenting on your post. I’m watching you! .

Hey guys loving the episode so far. Just wanted to leave a comment about the dichotomy Colin was speaking about Bruce Wayne and Batman. I know you guys don’t read the comics or are massive Batman fans but just want to point out that the glitz and glamour and being a petulant and rich spoiled kid is an act he puts on for the people of Gotham to keep his secret. He acts that way on purpose so they could like you said wouldn’t believe he would risk his life for the city. Ben Affleck didn’t bring it to the character, it was always crucial to his ethos.

Great episode! I loved the animated series when I was younger. "Heart of Ice" was always my favorite episode. Plus Mark Hammil's Joker is undeniable. (Sidebar- I was thinking a "back to school" episode would be neat to listen to. The feeling of summer ending. Getting supplies and clothes. Stuff like that)

Bruce Wayne the playboy is a mask to protect Batman, his true identity. Great episode! Super nostalgic.

This used to be on Sunday mornings where I live, I really liked the show but also dreaded Sunday because my parents were divorced, and I would spend the weekend at my Mums house (which I loved), so I hated Sunday because I knew I had to go back to my Dads Sunday evening, great show, but yea, those were tough times being a kid and not having control over things like that.

Corey

I for one love the ending bit. The reaction to whether he was right or not is always hilarious to listen for. Great Show guys!

Would Alfred really be that clever with technology in the Batcave? Alfred acts like he was born in the Benjamin Franklin time era. I’m surprised there wasn’t an episode where Alfred and Robin get Batman locked out of his Amazon account? “Hey old man! beleivebatman69 doesn’t work anymore!” “Sir Robin, remember it is I before E except after C.”

Man all the Street Fighter 3 bashing :( the first iteration is awful granted but the 2nd version Second Impact is decent and the third iteration, SfIII Third Strike, is considered by many fighting game fans, including me, as the greatest fighting game of all time.

Dagan im gonna internally rotate your shoulder you keep up with those Dad jokes.

Nerd Alert: Bane wasn't created for or in the animated series. His first appearance was "Vengeance of Bane #1" by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench, Graham Nolan, and Dennis O'Neil. (January 1993) He later went on to star in the Knightfall storyline and broke Batman's back. :)

Great episode guys. I could listen to Dagan talk about animation for days on end. To your point Colin about why would someone want to hear you talk about Batman despite not being as much a fan as someone like myself. It's cool to get perspective. I think the greatest thing about Batman and his universe is that its able to speak to so many people. Sometimes it's just cool to geek out and see what other people like about the Caped Crusader and his Rogues Gallery. This has probably replaced G.I Joe as my favourite Knockback episode!

Craig Carter

Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike is the best Street Fighter of all time Colin. Very big (possibly only fan) of that game here

Let me just leave a recommendation for Colin and your taste for a darker batman. May I recommend the Dark Knight Returns part one and two. A very well animated and voice acted rendition of Frank Millers Dark Knight comics. The same comics that inspired Christopher Nolan’s movies. Love you guys even when you’re blatantly wrong about the MCU and what the films are about. Over and Out!

Huge Batman fan as well. Never watched the Animated series as a kid though as I didn’t know when it came on or what channel. lol Don’t forget Batman: Arkham Knight was rated-M and every kid Batman fan played it. Cool Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill to this day still play Batman/Joker from time to time.

Kenneth Oms

Colin, you should watch the DC animated movie Flashpoint. You get to see a Batman who falls off the deep end in way. And the last scene in the bat cave is one of the most emotional scenes ever in a good way

It's strange the things we connect to products like this. But that's the point of our show, I suppose!

LastStandMedia

It's funny; I actually read about it more recently (after we recorded) and I definitely didn't appreciate that it has its fans. I had no idea.

I will eat my hat if you don't like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It hits many of the same notes as Nolan's Batman movies.

One of my favourite Knockback eps by far! Again, loved Dagan's insight into the animation industry in the US and my favourite animated series of all time. This series, in no small part, is the reason I'm a professional animator today - much love again and thanks for another great episode!
