With Rugrats, Doug, and Ren & Stimpy, Nickelodeon launched a cartoon revolution in the early '90s. These three initial Nicktoon-branded offerings toted completely unique art styles, stories, tones, and even target audiences, and the trio proved to be animated powerhouses that persisted in popularity long after their initial runs. Nicktoons' positive reputation continued right on through the decade, though, as shows from Hey Arnold and Real Monsters to Rocko's Modern Life and The Angry Beavers delighted audiences around the world, replacing those older offerings with something fresher. Today's episode of KnockBack -- as voted on by the show's Patreon supporters -- is all about the Nicktoons of the 1990s. And no, this won't preclude us from doing specific episodes on specific shows in the future, so fret not. (There's a Ren & Stimpy episode of KnockBack, after all!)

I never clicked play so quickly.

The Rugrats theme started playing in my head just by reading the title, I'm ready for this.

I mostly watched FoxKids and CartoonNetwork as a kid. They had the most IP shows, reruns of 80s and shows that was similar (Like how SWAT Kats took that Batman Animated dark theme and put it on high energy which was very cool until it got canned)... but when I think of Nickelodeon I think mostly of friendlier, less and more non-hurtful violence and the show “Hey Arnold”... I always loved that intro, probably watched every episode as a kid..., later on I also saw the first season of Spongebob, which just exploded in popularity.

Well I know what my favorite Knockback episode will forever be.

I loved the episode of catdog where Cats teeth were becoming rotten because Dogs food was passing through to the other end and ruining cats teeth.

Aww Vonnegut. RIP. First fell in love with him in 9th grade. My English teacher tried to tell me not to read him; ended up doing a huge report on him for his influence a couple years later after delving deep into his collection of work. Stellar author, his work will live on for a long time.

I loved 90s Nicktoons back in the day. I was looking forward to you guys talking about Invader Zim, and when you didn’t I had to look it up. It came out in 2001, so it wasn’t part of the 90’s. Apparently as we age, we loose track of when things happened. Ha!

Loved this episode! Also don't worry Col, I'll always love you more. Dagan is still after your Iron Throne though lol Dag is right though when it comes to impact on liking or commenting on tweets/messages I can confirm. Until next time, take care.

Love the episodes about animation. Shoutout to Dagan for being awesome =) Colin is OK too ;)

Rugrats was so creepy lol. I never really enjoyed it, but the theme song was really catchy.

Yes!! I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. It didn't disappoint! I liked Rugrats as a younger kid, but as I got older Doug and Hey Arnold became my favorites. Probably speaks to the fact that even as a 4th and 5th grader I was having some kind of existential crisis. Thanks for the great episode, guys!

I remember when I was living with my dad in the 90s and watching Doug at his workplace after school. There was an episode where Doug's sister (Judy? ) had to parallel park and it scared me for some reason. It's the only thing I remember from that show, and think about it still sometimes lol, I'm 32 now and really have no idea why that stuck with me. Anyway good episode guys!

Kablam! “The Flesh! He’s super strong and superrrr naked” Nice episode fellas!

Devon McCarty

If you can't beatbox the theme song to Doug, then you can lose my fucking number.

Loved listening to this episode today. I never realised people didn’t like the Rugrats art style. I loved it! Ren & Stimpy used to creep me out as a kid. I think the detail in the art style was a little too “gorey” for me as a kid. I always remember it being one of the only shows my dad watched with me through.

Dagan’s brief commentary as Colin left the room gave me flashbacks to the Water Man

Not to go off on a tangent

Rocko was such a special show. It was cool to see a successor with Camp Lazlo. Cool to see SpongeBob going for 20 years. And I don’t know a single soul who watched Disney’s Doug. 😂

I don’t know if you or Dagan have watched ‘Bojack Horseman’ but it’s probably my favorite adult cartoon. If you guys have seen it, and love it like I do, an episode on it would be so cool! Especially with Dagan’s animation expertise and knowledge. The show is still running, though, so maybe it has to end first to have an episode on it. Regardless, I HIGHLY recommend the show. It has a lot of that dark humor that you love, Colin

KaBlam! Oh my god that show was hilarious. The reoccurring super hero segment had me dying with laughter as a kid. Meltman with the power to...MELT. Classic

As I was growing up in Germany, a lot of the classic '90s and early '00s Nicktoons were starting to air for the first time (or as reruns long after the US runtime) in Germany, back around 2007-2012ish, right when I was the perfect age to watch them. I remember the AFN programming being very lackluster and half the time our decoder didn't work, so as a kid I actually did end up watching a fair bit of German TV and as a result I had a similar experience to the generation of '90s kids before me had back in the US.

Ha, well usually the dubbing is laughably bad. However, original productions can be very good. I especially like German comedies, despite the stereotype. There's also a few famous cartoons such as Vicky the Viking and Maya the Honey Bee, which are Japanese/German co-productions from Nippon Animation. This is unrelated, but have you seen the movie Look Who's Back? Hilarious German satire about Hitler waking up in modern day Berlin and getting up to no good. Not sure how well some of the jokes translate but I definitely recommend it and I believe it's on Netflix.

I love Knockback - my favorite podcast out there. However, I have to say I was slightly disappointed with this episode - I wish you guys went into a little more detail about the characters, maybe some favorite episodes/moments and personal memories of the shows. I get that you guys didn’t watch all of the shows much (or at all), but at least for shows like Doug and Rocko’s Modern Life, it would have been cool to go a bit deeper. Also, correct me if I’m wrong - but I don’t recall hearing any fan submissions this week. Would have been great to hear some thoughts from the listeners to fill in the gaps on some of the shows. Just my two cents. I want to reiterate that I do LOVE this podcast and really appreciate Colin and Dagan’s chemistry and banter. Keep up the great work.

Hey, thank you for your feedback! This was a fan-chosen episode, and we wouldn't have picked it to do ourselves. So we did the best we could. We would have preferred to do them all separately, and we probably will at some point (as we already had with Ren and Stimpy). I keep trying to remind the audience to "think small" with topic votes, but they don't listen. =D

Daniel Mitzner

I totally hear that - makes sense. Yea, “smaller” topics are probably preferable. Would love to see a Doug podcast for example. Thanks for the response!

LastStandMedia

I suspect we'll do a solo Doug episode in the future, particularly because Dagan worked there.

Joe Bellotta

I'd really like a knockback on Saturday morning cartoons!
