What can you say about the best-selling home video game console of all-time? PlayStation 2 -- launched in 2000 -- completely morphed the way we looked at gaming machines. The fact that PSone could even play audio CDs was a revolution; now we were looking at a machine that could play game discs and DVDs alike, opening up even more entertainment possibilities. More than 150 million units sold later, PlayStation 2 is a staggering 50 million units ahead of the second place console on the vaunted Best-Selling Home Consoles of All-Time list. Let that sink in. Think about how incredible that is. And then listen to our 2+ hour reminiscence of Sony's beloved second foray into gaming, the wonderful experiences that it brought with it, and the memories it left with us all.

You guys have us spoiled for topics. Downloading this as we speak and I can't wait to listen! Hope you're both keeping well!

Owen

Geez the beginning of this cast is like the darkest timeline hahaha. Was like how did we get to the horrific death talk.

Ryan Harvey

Oh man the FFX hate bums me out. I mean it's all your opinion, but I think it may be a generational thing like the StarWars prequels, FFX is divisive within the fanbase. 😭😂 Great podcast guys!

Brian Borlaug

Black was a great game and it was made by Criterion games, did great work for EA with that and the Burnout series. Also had amazing audio design way before it's time.

James Kinslow III

I always listen to you podcasts at work as it helps pass the time; however, I won't be back to work until Sunday night so I may have to make an exception for this episode and just listen to it today (and then relisten to it Sunday night). Thank you for all the hard work you pour into CLS. You're the best. :)

The PS2 is the one Sony console I never owned. I was so turned off and sick of "memory cards" with the PS1 and N64 that I didn't want to purchase another console that used either. I bought the original Xbox instead when it became available. Halo and MGS2 being available on the original Xbox was good enough for me. I do regret not getting a PS2 tho. Missed out on a lot of games at the time but I played a lot at my buddy's house.

Phillip Guglielmo

Colin, I am now setting aside all my goals and ambitions. My purpose from this moment forward is to help you see the light that is Final Fantasy X. Seriously though, PS2 was my first Sony console, and I just HAD to try out Final Fantasy (I had a Mega Drive so it was completely new to me). I fell in love with that game in a way I never had before, and I'll cherish that first playthrough forever.

Richard Duflo

Colin, you’re absolutely right about Vice City having the soundtrack in any game. It’s just so good Socom, I miss that series. Lots of great memories playing S2 online. I had a long Ethernet cable running from my room and down the hallway into my parents room where the router was. Good times

Been waiting for this one for a long time. Are you planning to do an episdoe on the original Xbox as well? Those 6 generation felt like the last gen where the consoles were mostly different

Zack E

I had an N64, and then an Xbox. I had very little exposure to both the PS1 and PS2, but when I did go over to my cousins and see their PS2 I just did not understand why they needed Memory Cards, it seemed insane to me (being young and naive) that you needed this extra accessory to save your progress, considering the Xbox had an internal hard drive and I never had to worry about save files.

Michael Miller

I will forever defend PS2s launch library. SSX, Time Splitters, Kessen and Dynasty Warriors 2 were my jam. Side note: the Jak collection is indeed on PS4!

Will Hahn

Correction! You two did do a Nintendo GameCube episode awhile back. I remember you guys taking extensively about it’s history and your favorite games for the console!

David Graham

I wouldn't say starting with Persona 4 is the correct entry to the series; Persona 3 definitely is, IMO. Damn shame you never played it, Colin. Now that's a game I hold in the same regard as you do Mega Man 3. What I would give to hear Colin Moriarty discuss it... sure you don't have a spare 100+ hours lying around? ;-)

Brandon Hardman

Thanks for getting to my question! Dagan made me realize I didn’t mention my favorite PS2 RPG’s. Suikoden 3, Wild Arms 3, and the OG Kingdom Hearts.

Trent Miller

You guys were wondering why I jumped from the NES to the N64... well, I didn’t realize that the SNES was different from the NES until I had the 64 for awhile. I was a dumb kid lol.

Zack E

The way you said “You haven’t seen the last of Ratchet and Clank on PS4” And you’ve recently mentioned that there is still an unannounced 2nd party PS4 exclusive coming. Makes me wonder :) I absolutely loved Ratchet and Clank PS4.

Josh Lucas

All the Jak and Daxter games are available on PS4! I got em all during a PSN sale for like $10. Played the first one for like an hour and never played again lol.

Nate McKinney

Glad I'm not the only one that got Summoner at launch... that and SSX were my first two games. Needless to say, there was a whole lot of snowboarding going on until I got my mom to buy me another game.

Andy Jenereaux

One of my all time favorite games, (dark cloud)came from the ps2. I even have a drans feather tattoo. One of the only people I ever hear talk about dark cloud is you Colin, and I appreciate any time you mention it

Philip Andersen

Dagan, you said you never played the first ratchet and clank game. Any plans to play the remake on PS4 then? It’s fantastic.

Jason Stafford

That video where the characters in Summoner were playing D&D though! Best part of that game! "Do you have any cheetos!?"

Drew Lee

Anyone else enjoy/play the game Extermination? It was sleeper game on my top PS2 games. The voice acting was terrible, but I enjoyed the action and it always gave me The Thing vibes. I bought it used a few years ago, but sadly it has just collected dust on my shelf. Maybe it’s time to bust it out!

Brandon Soto

Thanks for using my topic / reading my question, Colin. Always appreciate it. Can’t wait for the PS3 episode.

Nate McKinney

Killer 7 was the other Capcom 5 game. Great episode, guys.

LastStandMedia

I don't edit the show anymore, so I have the pleasure of having no idea what you're talking about. LOL.

LastStandMedia

It's superb. I remember the commercial for the game so crisply, too, as the camera panned in on the protagonist with Flock of Seagulls playing. Classic stuff.

LastStandMedia

I'll defer to the gigantic nerds in the audience to steer people in the right direction there.

LastStandMedia

It's awesome! I wish Level-5 would return to it (with Sony's blessing, obviously, as Sony owns the IP).

LastStandMedia

I can't say I remember that one. Strangely, I don't even recall the title. Rare for me, if I do say so myself! LOL.

Wow. Thanks for using my PS2 buying, then breaking experience on the podcast! I was drinking a bottle of water at work while listening and almost choked on it when you said my name and read my comment. It was so unexpected. Thanks Colin!

MeatSpin11

The PS2 was great for us DBZ nerds too. Budokai and the Tenchaichi series were amazing and some of my favorite fighting games ever. Other PS2 favs were the Midnight Club games, NFL&NBA Street, SW Battlefront, Tony Hawk Underground 2, and Sly Cooper. Great episode.

This is the first time I feel I NEED to see the drawing 😂

Tony Colton

Technically a new Uncharted would be Uncharted 7 - 1, 2, 3, 4, Golden Abyss & Lost Legacy 😜

Anonymous

Great episode! I feel like you missed one big topic though. How did the PS2 help pave the way for online console gaming? SOCOM, the Tony Hawk games, FF14, etc.

LastStandMedia

Did online stuff not come up? It's been awhile since we recorded this (and I don't edit the shows anymore, someone else does). That said, with major topics like this, we can never cover everything. Which is kinda exciting, actually, 'cause it means we can return to some of these topics in the future!

LastStandMedia

When I started reading your comment, I was asking myself, "is he really going to bring up Fight For Fortune?" LOL.

Persona 5 is definitely 100 hours, but Persona 3 and 4 can easily be beaten in 60-65 hours without missing much at all. Still might be a bit much for your liking, but they're not quite 100 hours

LastStandMedia

It's too much time to spend with a game for me, at least these days. I used to eat that shit up when I was younger.

Tyson Williams

I would’ve drawn David Bowie

Jewelbox

Late on this but the game that Dagan mentioned at the end 'melty blood actress again' can be bought on steam right now in its most recent version. It is a Japanese arcade port and in my mind one of the greatest fighting games ever made (second only to vampire savoir and SfIII third strike). As a big fighting game nut I recommend everybody play it. Melty blood also has a spiritual successor in the form of Under Night In Birth, a still very popular fighting game also developed by French Bread that will be on the main stage at EVO this year.

Criterion made Black, same people that made the Burnout games. A lot of the Criterion developers are part of a newer studio called Three Fields Entertainment, they made Dangerous Golf, Dangerous Driving, Lethal VR, and Danger Zone 1-2. The Jak trilogy has been ported to PS4 as well as the racing spin-off. Odinsphere is awesome and looks stellar in HD
