In the early '80s, the home console vanished as quickly as it arrived. But only a few years later, a new champion emerged -- Nintendo -- and gaming on your television has only grown since. Nintendo was a force to be reckoned with during the NES era, with no real competition, but as the decade turned and the Super Nintendo appeared poised to continue NES' dominance, a fresh-faced challenger arrived on the scene: SEGA. A corporated afterthought in the '80s, SEGA's Genesis console rose to the challenge of SNES, and the battle that ensued is one of gaming's most memorable multi-year battles, a battle that coined the term Console War. So let's dive into what it was like to be a Nintendo or SEGA kid growing up, and all that entailed. Mario vs. Sonic. SNES vs. Genesis. And Big Kids vs. Little Kids... or so some people thought.

God I cannot wait for what I can only assume is 90 straight minutes of shitting on the Sega Scrubs.

You used my topic Colin! Thanks a lot!!! Such a shame Sega went out of business. They never should’ve released the CD/32x add-ons, and should’ve put all their efforts into the Saturn or even the Dreamcast. If Dreamcast played DVDs, who knows what might have happened?

I'd agree with you on Superman, with one caveat; one of the elements I did really like about Snyder's take is the whole "what does a Superman mean to human civilization?" aspect. How would the revelation of his existence affect our spirituality, our politics, and our sense of place in the universe. Without that, he is just flat as a character. It's one of my issues with DC in general - when every hero is a GOD (except Batman, who is a multibillionaire), how does the audience identify with them? Don't know if you've watched, but I highly recommend Daredevil on Netflix. It's a shame it's been cancelled, because it's probably my favorite comic adaptation since Nolan's Batman Trilogy. As always, fantastic episode guys. Knockback has a pretty brutal recording schedule, but every episode is enthusiastic, educational, and entertaining as hell. Happy Holidays, my dudes!

Woah! Secret of Evermore - that's the first time I've heard you mention that game! IMO one of the great overlooked and underrated titles of all time. Very relatable - just you and your dog travelling to an alternate dimension crafted by some scientist in your town. It was just enough Secret with an American spin. And man, THAT MUSIC! Jeremy Soule's first game he composed. At just 19 he wrote and submitted tapes to Squaresoft execs, convincing them that video game music could be so much more. One of the few WRPGs I really enjoy. Happy to hear you mention it.

Nicee! One of my favorite era's!

My friend that lived next door had the Genesis while my brother and I had the SNES. Road Rash, Sonic 2 and Streets Of Rage were fun games, but even back then I knew the SNES was better.

Wasn’t a huge gamer when I was really young, but I did have a NES and Genesis. Bringing up the sports games with Sega rang true with me cause that’s what I played the most on it. The EA NHL games and I had this hockey game where the teams were countries. I don’t remember the name of it, but I played it to death

Brandon Soto

Also Colin, my 1st & 2nd consoles I owned were the Genesis & SNES. I believe if you had one and played more games on it, you would like it a lot more.

Great episode Colin. I'm so glad everything is going well with everyone at CLS!

Absolutely loved this episode, well done guys.

My favorite part of the Genesis other than Sonic was the controller. Loved the indented big buttons and the D-pad was ergonomic after many hours of play. The layout however is questionable. Once they made the 6 button with tiny buttons and worse d-pad (later on triggers with the Saturn), they kinda ruined what felt so good with the original.

I wonder sometimes if we really need to identify with everything. To me, Marvel is maybe more about seeing yourself as the characters because they are relatable, whereas DC is more like Greek myths, in that when I read Marvel I kind of see where I am, but when I read DC, I see where I want to be, the ideals and archetypes I want to live up to, if that makes any sense. I mostly loathe myself so identifying with the characters is less important to me than seeing ways to maybe make myself better. Haha :) I had a long post about a perspective on Superman at the bottom, but Patreon ate it. :(

Man this episode gives me the feelz. I'm almost sad I won't be able to experience Chrono Trigger for the first time again, or the weekends at my dad's playing X-Men on the Genesis. Colin, I do have a non-sequative question (not for the show) about Dagan (sp?), is he with Jim Henson Co or does he work on Sesame Street? I ask because my wife and I have been watching "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" a lot recently and they do a lot of bits that ape Sesame Street and I think of your brother and Knockback when I see it. Anyways, happy holidays and keep up the great work.

loved this episode and the part that got me not may question being read but the Dad talk.. Man i know my dad was semi the same way you would be blasting music while in the pool see his car coming around and just jet inside to turn that stuff down.

I text you once Colin and said if you suggest a book for me to read I would start supporting you on patreon :-) I had just read console wars and masters of doom and loved those books and thought you would have good advice for me on suggestions for my next book to read , so I guess I'm asking what book should I read next ???

Great episode! Only thing that could have made it better was to spend the entire episode discussing the nuanced differences between NHL94 in SNES and Genesis. The game we simply called “Na-hull” These knock back episodes that land in my time wheelhouse are a lot of fun! Thanks guys!

I too will never understand the love affair with Sonic. A work colleague of mine has a tattoo sleeve that he calls greatest games of all time. It features Link, Mario, Resident Evil and fucking Sonic. We've had numerous arguments and he still believes that Sonic is superior to Mario in everyway. Funnily enough our workplace has a tattoo policy against sleeves and offensive tattoos, it's a workplace joke now that he has to cover it up because Sonic is offensive trash. Keep up the good work guys, I love Knockback.

I have a game gear, cool stuff, but need to lock down to a wall outlet to avoid spending hundreds of dollars a day on batteries. Of course the console counterparts to the games were a lot better...

I've had a hard time finishing Console Wars. I'm about 60% of the way through and I dunno.

Extraordinary. So why exactly were my last set of comments from 10 minutes ago completely un-viewable to the point that I thought I had a glitch with my account/comments in general and had to yet again make an account to trace the issue???

JusticeSoulTuna

I'm always quite fascinated by the history of gaming, so this was very enjoyable to listen to. It's good to have some perspective for stuff like console wars, which has changed so much in the years

I could never understand why anyone liked Mario Kart for Game Cube and Beyond. The control was absolutely perfect for the SNES version and to this day is the only Mario Kart I am good at. To me adding hills was terrible. Colin, the way you feel about the NHL series today is how I feel about the Kart series today. I need low-res MK.

Michael Raymond

Had a silly comment I wanted to throw in about your soda of choice. I remember a time where I'd absolutely guzzle down regular soda like it was my job! Lol. Even though it truly isnt all that much better for you I wound up swapping over to diet soda. Wound up helping me lose 140~ pounds! 😂 Shame that I couldn't reasonably enjoy those cokes and burgers back in my teens. I'm 23 now. Wonderful episode as always. Hope you're feeling better too. Also, I apologize for the amount of typos I probably make. I'm terrible on mobile.

I was playing the old Mega Man games on Game Boy when I was at Dagan's a couple of weeks ago, and they really are awesome.

For me I was always a Sega arcade guy... although my background in the UK was spectrum followed by Amiga. I did go Saturn and then Dreamcast, whilst buying up all the old systems so now have quite a collection. For nintendo i went gameboy, gba, n64, gamecube, ds, wii, 3ds and bought all the old systems as well and have a good collection. As to what is best, well they are. different.. Sega are amazing for arcade racers, fighters and shooters. nintendo are best for sublime platformers, rpg's. so it all depends on what you love..

...for me I love both.

"Filmer" There's a different set of words for that. Film Buff. Movie Buff, Cinephile...

The question is, why don't we call ourselves Game Buffs, (too antiquated) or Ludophiles (too nerdy.)

LastStandMedia

I agree that preference really did (and still does) matter a great deal when you're deciding what console or consoles to purchase. True enough.

Love Colin's Last Stand and all your podcasts. Greetings from Buffalo, NY

I just began listening to this episode. It's funny when I was kid I preferred Mario because I had a SNES. My brother who was much older and had moved out of the house had a Genesis and liked Sonic. We never had many opportunities to play on each other's console so the one we preferred was pretty well set. For Christmas my 5 year old nephew (my brother's son) got a Nintendo Switch which you can play both Sonic and Mario on and he loves both. He doesn't understand that back in the day which one you played was dependent on which console you owned. Since my nephew can play both on one console, it just shows to me that back in day one's allegiance to either Sonic or Mario just depended on which console you owned and didn't really have as much to do with the game itself.

Context Should Matter

Happened to me and I had to email Patreon support. They said my comments were marked as spam. Hopefully this got solved for you.
