Sacred Symbols is a PlayStation-centric podcast. You all know that! But we thought we'd change things up in this month's CLS Patreon-exclusive podcast by dedicating an entire episode of Sacred Symbols to The Other Guys: Nintendo, Xbox, and PC. We solicited questions from our $2+/month supporters all about what's happening outside of the PlayStation ecosystem we cover so thoroughly, giving our thoughts on the status of the industry's other major players in the process. This is a fun, loose, and altogether quite different episode of our show, and we very much hope you enjoy it.

Happy Friday!

Lockmort

I was just about to go for a long walk. You just made my day/walk.

Tyson Williams

Finally! A Knockback episode about the Other Guys, best movie ever

Jonah Gespacho

I thought it was about the movie. You are a liar and it was not the best movie ever. I did get excited though, maybe it is.

Tyson Williams

My one problem with Breath of the Wild is it suffers from Ubi-Sandbox tedium and repetition. Like it’s often compared to the original LoZ because of its nonlinearity and discovery but I feel that a lot of what’s on the map in Breath of the Wild is filler unlike LoZ where everything was deliberate. If they just take what they have and cut down on filler and skinner box designs, I think the game would be perfect

James Galos

Right when I was hitting the wall of pushing government paperwork around my desk a ray of light shines down to make Friday’s great again! I don’t think Friday’s ever stopped being great though haha

Hose A Contra Razz

My experience was totally different i loved the exploration and had no repetition because i deleted enemies directly every time, I played this game over 150 hrs, Its my favorite game next to spider-man

Excellent show guys keep it up!

Can we please get a once a month podcast called "The Other Guys" where Chris hosts (since he's more agnostic with his gaming habits), and you guys just talk about all the non-Playstation related news for the month? You're welcome. When it comes to fruition, I prefer cash, not check.

Awesome episode guys!

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who had issues with Breath of the Wild. It didn’t feel like a Zelda game and it’s the first one I lost interest in.

Carson Smith

2018 was a pretty soft year for Nintendo game wise. They definitely blew their load in 2017. However; 2019 is really shaping up to be pretty stellar. Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, Pokemon confirmed. Metroid and Bayonetta maybes. Good time to have a Switch.

LastStandMedia

I wanna circulate Fireside Chats and KnockBack back in, but there will be future Sacred Symbols exclusives, too. =)

LastStandMedia

None of those games will push units, save Pokémon. I'll be very, very, VERY interested to see the Switch's sales trajectory YoY, beginning this past March.

Marcus Brown

This was a very fun show. Great work as always.

Jason Stafford

2 thoughts: I may be alone in this, but I don't think I am. 1. I play a good bit on my Switch because I don't get to play at home as much as I'd like to, and the games are close to what I'd play at home. 2. When I do get home and have time to play, I want a console because I don't want to sit at a damn desk all the time. I want to be in my recliner with my dog. :)

Will Hahn

Lol Colin when you said “The Other Guys”, it reminded me of the Will Ferrel and Mark Whalberg cop comedy. That movie is absolutely hilarious and I highly recommend you and Dagan watch it. Also to your points about Switch, I really am rooting for Nintendo. I want them to succeed. But could you imagine if they sold their classic games with trophies on PS4 and Xbox? I would be all over that shit. LOL.

LastStandMedia

It's kind of the same conundrum my Vita has been in for a few years, especially as the meaningful releases have slowed.

Jake H.

I absolutely agree with Colin’s notion that the Switch is in a lot of trouble when the next generation of consoles come along and third party support dries up. However, I do think that 2019 will see a meteoric rise in Switch sales. Pokémon is the obvious console seller, but I seriously think that the appeal of Animal Crossing is being overlooked, since that most certainly will draw in an audience of people who don’t have a Switch already — namely, female gamers. Animal Crossing sold sensationally well on the 3DS and between that and Pokémon I think a bunch of 3DS holdovers who only bought Nintendo handhelds previously will finally graduate to the Switch next year.

I can’t see Microsoft ever going full on publishing on PlayStation, the reason they publish on PC is because they own PC (as in Windows) they’d never directly publish on a competitor (outside of Minecraft which was already there to begin with). Just my two cents though

Sekani Adebimpe

Hey Colin and Chirs! Loved the exclusive episode and looking forward to more content in the future! In regards to the episode, there is a pseudo-correction that I’d like to bring up: In Japan, it is possible to officially purchase a Nintendo Switch without the dock. However, it unfortunately carries a lot less value than purchasing a normal Nintendo Switch (I believe a dockless Switch costs around $260-270, when the dock normally retails at $90). Don’t know why the option hasn’t come to America yet, but I found it interesting!

John Lynch

Loved the episode as always. I’d like to make a comment from a point of view from someone who just started playing PS as his main console around 2016. In my opinion I believe that HAlo 5 is hands down the best multiplayer the series has seen. I think sprint and aim down sight are perfectly fine for the arena shooter, that isn’t what makes or not makes an arena shooter. It’s the symmetrical maps with power ups and weapons being controlled on the maps, which halo 5 absolutely nailed. I think the issue really is just that since competition is so much more stiff people go elsewhere

John Lynch

Also I 100 percent free with Colin about Nintendo should have achievements. My brother asked me about that and I told him that is the decider for me on what system to get if everything played the same. There are more than a few games that came out I’d prefer to play handheld, but because the switch doesn’t have achievements I bought it on PS4

John Lynch

Colin I’m curious if this is something you know or can talk about. Prior to Microsoft buying gears, the coalition was called black tusk, they were making a new IP. Do you have any inside information about what they were creating?

John Lynch

Listening to you guys tal about switch, I own it, and completely agree. I believe for Nintendo the only chance they have to succeed is to stop considering it a home console. If they occupy this hybrid space, and say there are no more consoles ore no more handhelds, they do this hybrid and they do it well, they can keep pushing units, but they need to commit to THIS vision

Phillip Guglielmo

Great, great episode. One thing to keep in mind regarding Nintendo: they have far more aces up their sleeve than people realise. 2D Mario vastly outsells 3D Mario, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem have gradually become smash hits that do push hardware (see 3DS), Odyssey and BOTW are likely to receive Majora's Mask-style sequels etc. I'm pumped for the Switch's future. I also think once the PS5 is released they'll double down on it being a handheld and allow it to occupy the space 3DS did while PS4 was storming out the gate. I think all 3 players are looking good right now - the next gen's competition is going to be fierce as hell.

Zach Brown

From the comments here and from your comments on Breath of the Wild on numerous podcasts, it seems that a major problem that Zelda is running into is its challenges in staying fresh AND remaining true to itself, especially as "remaining true to itself" is something that seems different to different players. It began as a completely directionless open world in 1986, and BotW arguably captures that better than any of its entries since, thereby "remaining true to itself." However, Link to the Past and Ocarina strongly laid down the identity of temple exploration (as you mentioned), and while BotW tried something new and avoided this to the level of mastery that past Zelda games did, BotW did seem to drift from Zelda's identity in that matter. I absolutely loved BotW because I, like Miyamoto described himself when telling tales of exploring caves in his youth, enjoyed just exploring the nature, and I always felt there was something to discover, a story from the past that the environment told, or an interesting challenge to overcome. Like many others, I put over 150 hours into it, never bored once. I guess boredom is a personal matter and dependent upon the player; after all, unlike most gamers, Witcher 3 bored me, and I gave that three chances. Hopefully, the next Zelda entry will try to please all gamers and the various definitions about what a Zelda should be. Possibly have the Western-RPG-inspired open world to explore, but less mini-dungeons and more true, grand dungeons. Maybe even take a tip from Majora's Mask and infuse the world with deeper stories and characters that better inspire the player to care about them.

AEKR

I sense venom in Colin's voice when he talks about Nintendo. I can tell there's some personal skew on his points. For example the idea that Nintendo is going third party is just nuts.

Germanos

Hey, Collin will there be a exclusive RSS link for such, special episodes that I could add to my podcast app?

LastStandMedia

I think what's lost on some people is that dragging people into the Nintendo ecosystem isn't a one-time thing. It's gradual. So this assumption that something like Animal Crossing would be the game that finally gets someone in... it's like, why? Wouldn't have Zelda, or Mario, or Smash, or whatever else already done that? In other words, it's the law of diminishing returns in action.

LastStandMedia

They should embrace handhelds. Give players the option to plug 'em into a TV, sure -- they've been doing that since SNES and Game Boy -- but you gotta embrace what you do best.

LastStandMedia

I'd have to look, but is that true? 2D Mario outsold Galaxy, 64, and even Sunshine? I'd believe it, but I find that strange, particularly with Wii's reach with Galaxy.

LastStandMedia

There's no doubt that, at the very core of the original Zelda is an open-world and meandering spirit captured by Breath of the Wild. There's no doubt about that. But there's something there -- a direction or an intent, perhaps -- that I feel is essential to Zelda's spirit as a game series. Breath of the Wild just isn't a Zelda game, for me.

LastStandMedia

I love Nintendo. NES is my favorite console of all-time. I don't agree with your assessment. It's not insane that Nintendo would go third party. If Switch did Wii U numbers, you'd already have seen it.

LastStandMedia

Hey! You should see an RSS feed link on the front page of CLS' Patreon (just look on a browser). If you have any problems, DM me, and I'll see if I can help you out.

Phillip Guglielmo

You would be amazed (and saddened) by the ridiculous sales of New Super Mario Bros. in comparison to the 3D Mario games. NSMB Wii: 30.2 million / Super Mario Galaxy: 12.77 million / NSMB DS: 31 million / Super Mario 64: 11 million

Zack E

There is always going to be a market for consoles. I think people are being silly about a “one-box” type of future. It’s not like PS4 came out 15 years ago. Have people already forgetten the crazy hype and excitement for both PS4 and Xbox One that 2013 holiday season? And the continued and ongoing success of the consoles? The Switch has been a great success as well. People may not physically walk into stores to buy the product, but people will continue to want to buy specific branded consumer electronics.

Zack E

If you sense anything, it’s probably his annoyance of the blind fandom and free passes that Nintendo seems to always get. I recommend listening to the Knockback episodes that center around Nintendo if you’d like to hear more Nintendo viewpoints from Colin.

Germanos

Forgot you have a one RSS to rule them all link :) Added it to my podcast app and filtered it so I have exclusive episodes only there :D Thanks for the reply. Best of luck!

Michael Morris

I don’t know man, I fucking love the switch. There is absolutely no way I’d play games like hollow knight, mega man, steam-world dig etc. on ps4. It’s my console of choice for most games. I’ve played only 3 games on ps4 all year the rest of the time it’s a Netflix machine. I get that it’s underpowered and they have a bit of first party problem going forward, but frankly it’s a better place to play games for the way my life seems to be going. I feel like you and Chris are missing that a bit.

Michael Morris

That being said I also am sick of the “Nintendo bump” from seemingly everyone.

LastStandMedia

I don't particularly think it's silly. I think that "PlayStation" will be an app, just like Netflix, in 10 or 20 years.

LastStandMedia

I'm glad you're enjoying it! Note that all of those games are on PS4 (I've played two of them there), so I don't think we're missing anything... though, to your point, we may be missing the actual point of the handheld. I just don't think it's for me.

Michael Morris

I know that most of those games are on other platforms and I probably should have prefaced that I rarely dock it, it’s pretty much only a handheld for me. Some games (maybe most) fit the handheld platform better, I’m just happy we have the option for both.

Ethan Barbee

I know I’m late to the party due to finally becoming a supporter, (which was LONG overdue) but I wanted to express how much I enjoyed this episode. It was really cool to hear Chris’ insight into his side of the console space, and as always, he always inspired me to go back to Doom and finally get that platinum🙏🏽

Andrew Lee

As much as there's an admitted Nintendo "blindspot" among the gaming press and community, I've noticed theres been an equally loud and obnoxious anti-Nintendo circlejerk accumulating in places like Reddit, and among gaming YouTube channels. I remember back in March of 2017 just as the Switch launched, there was a bombardment of Youtube commentary and opinion pieces about how the Switch was DoA and how the idea of an admittedly underpowered hybrid console would never succeed. Now, almost 2 1/2 years later with the Switch already surpassing Gamecube's lifetime sales numbers, most of these voices have remained dead silent. Maybe this says something more about the predatory nature of Youtube opinion pieces, where hot takes and reactionary responses are what end up getting the views and making the money, but I feel like they need to be held just as accountable as those who give Nintendo an easy pass.
