I would say the three main things to blame is 1st the shooter, 2nd the parents, and 3rd how society treated the person before the incident, in that order. Of course there are an infinite number of causes at play here that pushes the person to ever consider shooting up a school. But in reality, it comes down to those three things. The person didn’t have to go in a direction in their mind that lead to only one outcome of shooting everyone up. The parents or guardians have a responsibility to provide a home where the child growing up to be this person becomes someone who feels loved and balanced. This also means making sure they get the proper medical and mental treatment they need if it just so happens to be needed. And society, whether it be the security, doctors, or the people around the boy could have been more aware of potential threats and taking the proper precautions for them. And those precautions could be many things. If you feel the person is disturbed, show them love and talk to them to see if you can make a difference. I don’t know. Obviously all this is much more complicated, but to me, that’s a base level understanding and a good place to start.

Great episode, Colin. I definitely agree with how you view gun violence, though we probably have differing opinions on how we should look into it. I don't think the guns are doing the killing (the people are), but I do believe that it's making it extremely easy for these people to get them. When I worked at GameStop, we were robbed by a man. He held an automatic rifle to my head and starting counting down threatening to kill me if I didn't get the money in his bag in time. He was eventually caught, and news broke that he legally purchased the gun. A quick Facebook search showed his public profile where he was shown with stacks of cash, drugs and guns in every photo with violent descriptions inciting criminal activity. How did this man get that gun so easily? Because of these stupid laws, I had to deal with the emotional trauma from that event. I'll be honest, I battle with depression (runs in the family), and this event really made me think about suicide. Why should I have to suffer the consequences from laws that DO NOT protect the citizens of this country? I would like to hear your opinion on this.

Like I said, there's a ton of blame to go around. My major concern is making sure that we aim the blame at the culprit, and not at a series of things that are true for millions, and yet millions don't go and shoot up a high school. For me, it really is that simple. No one wants to lean on personal responsibility anymore, and I think that's a bummer.

I'm really sorry that that happened to you. That sounds horrific, and I'm glad you're okay.
