Predicting PlayStation 5 -- CLS Side Quest

In late 2019, chances are PlayStation 5 (or whatever it’ll be called) will launch. So let’s start framing the conversation around the new upcoming Sony console. How can Sony convince tens of millions of happy gamers that they need something new? What studios should be ready to go with games? What’s a good price point? This week’s Side Quest covers these preliminary PS5-related questions, and much more. Nailed it with the point on independent developers and keeping the ps5 PSN up to a certain quality standard

The system the Final Fantasy 7 remake will actually come out on? (haven't had a chance to watch yet)

Marc Boggio

Personally all I really want to see in a new console generation is a focus on game performance over game resolution. A few PS4 Pro games have graphics options (though not nearly enough), but the majority of games just go with checkerboard 4K at 30fps. While this doesn’t “ruin” games, it does make it hard for me to justify playing a multiplatform game on Playstation, when I get a version that looks just as good and performs twice as well on PC. That being said, if given the option to use the PS4 Pro to play those same games at 1080p, but a smooth 60fps, I’d likely play those games on PlayStation, as I’ve got more friends on PSN than I do on steam. On the point of the PC comparison, I think modular consoles with super simple, plug-and-play components are an amazing idea. Thinking from the perspective of a kid with a part time job, it’d be a lot easier to say, drop $150 on a processor or GPU upgrade every couple of years, than it would to put $500 down on the Pro/X version of a console. This would also basically necessitate graphics options, which as I mentioned above, are nothing but a good thing.

I personally don’t see what the ps5 can improve on besides the specs. This current generation HAS to be the last one running at 30fps or else I don’t see a point (Also true 4K not upscales). Of course there are little details but PS will really have to wow the mainstream market with some unique tech much like the switch did. I don’t think they can do it but we’ll see

Peter Campbell

Liked the video. I bought a pro in the summer for PSVR so am hoping Ps5 is still a while away.

My fear with modular consoles is consumer confusion. N64's minor modular nature with the Expansion Pak caused so much confusion back in the day. The Internet is more ubiquitous now, and consumers are generally better informed... but it could be a problem.

LastStandMedia

I would assume 60 FPS will be essentially mandatory on the next consoles. The power of the machine could put that entire argument to rest once and for all.

Will Hahn

Great stuff, Colin! I am puzzled though because I could live with my ps4 for another 7-8 years. Just like you say, gameplay is king.

Will Hahn

I personally never have really cared about graphics and frame rate. I mean yeah, they are icing on the cake... but what was the best part about TLOU? Or Horizon? For me, it was the gameplay and the story. But yes, both of those games are beautiful.

LastStandMedia

Truth be told, I felt the same way about PS3, and I agree with you about PS4. But, if it could BENEFIT gameplay... then... perhaps it's worth it?

Will Hahn

Right! That’s what I’m most curious about PS5 and how this system would create innovations on gameplay and the way we play/interact with games.

Cameron Paterson

Great video Colin. Really liked the bit when you talked about what games might be cross generation games.

Ray Briggs

Great video Colin, I never miss a SideQuest. I don't think we see a PS5 until 2020. Why rush it given how the PS4 has been a juggernaut and there is already an incremental PS4 Pro. I am with you that the PS5 should be more backward compatible forward thinking especially given Sony's large catalog of classic games at that point. I think Sony should take one more shot and not leave the handheld market to Nintendo. But I think they should sell it as the PS Portable Classic. Don't split the market with Sony console and handheld games. A Sony handheld with the ability to download and play offline (for travel) any PSN game (PS5, PS4, PS3 era). Also load it with the ability to play PS3 games and PS2/PS1 classics. Everything is crossbuy/cross save with your PS5. And all for a 199-249 price tag. I feel like that would sell and compete with the Switch. Pipe dreams I'm sure.

Michal Dudic

I'd prefer another PS4 hw revision, this time with a UHD player, and have them stick to that for ~2 years. Just to relieve what little stress I have as a late adopter.

Owen

Oh Knack lol

Dan Parsons

Great episode. Although I'm not sure the DS4 is actually worse for the touchpad, even if its unnecessary and I never really use it unless I have to.

LastStandMedia

Thank you for your dedication to Side Quest! I truly appreciate it. 2020 is I think the latest we'll see PS5, but you may be right! A handheld that would play PS5 (and probably even PS4)-caliber games would be cost prohibitive to the max, so I doubt we'll see it. But one can hope!

LastStandMedia

Thank you! I don't think it's WORSE for having it. I just don't think it needs to be there. Devs don't use it the way it was intended, so that tells you all you need to know. Put a few new buttons there.

Ray Briggs

I meant to say it would play smaller PSN games from the PS5/PS4 era, not full PS5/PS4 retail titles, more like indies. A smaller device could certainly handle titles like Night in the Woods or Celeste. Add in PS3, PS2 and PS1 classics and I think the Sony faithful line up. But that might be enough, see the Vita.

A.G.Rowe

Thanks for yet another great piece of content Colin. Hope you have a great day!

Eric S

I think PS5 should have UHD drive and also like you said Colin a way to play previous generation games.

strawhatninja

I do have a gaming pc so honestly the games convince me to buy consoles over graphics etc. I agree that we will probably see it next year, and since Sony has the games that speak to me I will buy one at some point like with the PS4. This question is off topic but do you have any interest in doing a weekly/monthly gaming podcast? I know you are already super busy but I know I would definitely enjoy it.

LastStandMedia

Do I have interest in that? Sure, I think that'd be a lot of fun. But I'd need to find the appropriate partner for such an endeavor.
