Welcome to the inaugural episode of KnockBack, the all-new podcast series I announced last week co-starring my brother, Dagan!

KnockBack, as you likely know by now , is a series dedicated to the nerdy things we love from our past, from movies, TV, and video games, to books, toys, and comics, and much more.

Dagan and I dedicated the first episode to a topic we know and love: The Empire Strikes Back. We hope you enjoy our chat.

Can't wait to listen to this on the way to work.

Mario Miranda

Can't wait to give it a listen

Joey Finelli

2 hours!?!? My afternoon is set!

Ryan Martinson

I’m working on an essay all day so this is a godsend!

Christopher Hopkins

2 hours! Yay! Day is gonna fly by listening to this, Thanks dude!

Brian Dewire

ESB has always been one of those movies that I always wish I had seen in the theater when I was older. It's aged so well and has always been the definitive Star Wars movie. Little details like Vader fighting Luke with one hand and the hints at the twist would have been awesome so soak up with more understanding. I prefer Jedi because of Luke and Anakin's relationship but Empire is just so damn good.

Christian Thomas

The lengths of seemingly mindless topics I could engage my brothers with whether it be Jon Connor war room maneuvers to which classes at Hogwarts would be the most fun to take are all pleasant means to enhance the strength of our brotherly bonds. Anticipating the chance to set aside some time to enjoy the convo as I sit back, jello out and knockback a few brewskies prepared to learn what this film represents for both of you.

Kevin Diaz

Yeeesssssssss. Shout out to you Colin.

Marc Boggio

I fully support Dagan’s idea to do an episode on Timothy Zahn. His trilogy is the real Episodes VII-IX; and there’s a good bet a lot of the CLS audience isn’t aware of them.

Michael Ferrari

Hahaha. I love that your dad is like this total badass, and also a low-key Star Wars nerd. Dude, please get him to rank the Star Wars films for us. Whether it's via a podcast or a simple list, I'd love to see his opinion.

Cannonball_Jones

I’m really glad we’re getting to know Dagan more. Looking forward to listening this evening!

Brian Dewire

When you mentioned Yoda lifting up the x-wing as a low-key "fuck you" to Luke, he kinda does the same thing in Last Jedi when he blows up the tree and just starts laughing. This is a really solid episode.

Nathanael Haller

Just started this! ESB is my favorite movie of all-time. Thanking the gods this is 2+ hours.

Josh James

You talked about Timothy Zahn in the podcast I just wanted to let you know if you weren’t aware that he’s written a book in the new canon called Thrawn with a sequel come by later this summer, thought the show was awesome by the way

Will Hahn

What a great first episode! I especially loved when you guys starting cracking up about “suck-ass” 😂. Would love to hear your thoughts about how you wish the prequels should’ve been done or what an old republic movie would be like or something like that.

Adam Niksch

Great episode Colin! And thanks for reading my question! For what it’s worth, I agree with you both. I doubt this movie will ever be topped. Watching this with my brother on our little CRT back in the day is something I’ll remember. My parents recorded all 3 movies for us when they were aired on TV. I remember having to leave for dinner right as they got to the part where Luke and Vader face off. And once we got back to finish it I turned to my dad and said “No way! He’s lying!” when that big reveal finally happens. Such a fantastic movie. Also, shout out to you and Dagan for saying my name is cool. Made me laugh at work. You gave a valiant effort in pronunciation (way better than I’m used to), but ‘Nix’ is how to say it. Who’d of thought that many consonants together make a sound so simple.

Chris B

Great first episode. Yes, temple of doom is the best Indy

LastStandMedia

Dude, my dad is so funny. He's ex-FDNY, 6'3", well-built, loves building shit, old cars, being outside, fixing things... ...and he's also a gigantic Star Wars nerd, Game of Thrones nerd, Walking Dead nerd, LotR nerd, et cetera. It's fun. =)

LastStandMedia

We intended to go "at least an hour" for each of the first eight episodes, and all of them went well over an hour. LOL.

Cannonball_Jones

I think I will, booting up a game on my PS4 and putting my headphones in now! I don’t know if you saw but I also sent you a message through Patreon after listening to your Fireside Chat with Matt Patrick last night.

Nathanael Haller

I’m gonna be honest, the length is perfect for me. The chemistry with you guys since you’re brothers makes the time just fly.

Marc Boggio

...and an excuse to re-read the Zahn trilogy has been presented 😏 My inner mid-90s Star Wars geek thanks you 👍 May the force be with you both

Beau

Y’all talked about how open Last Jedi left things compared to Empire. How Empire was very focused on where it could’ve gone next. But Last Jedi...who the hell knows. Do you think that’s a byproduct of Disney clearly not having an architect for this trilogy that lays out a basic story over three films? They’ve bragged that they let JJ tell his story, and then they let Rian tell his story. I think so far you got two movies where two Star Wars fanboys loved playing in the sandbox for two hours but forgot they had one part of a three part story. I think that’s why it feels so open to where it could go next.

David Mann

I am just sitting down to listen, but just wanted to chime and say "thank you" for this. You keep giving us more and more of what we want, and it's very appreciated.

BettyAnn Moriarty

OMG! This episode was fantastic. Great work, boys! I had so much fun listening - SO many memories!!! I laughed out loud a lot - just to listen to the familiar banter - it really tickled me. Proud of you both. Thanks for the great content! ❤️❤️👏🏻👍🏻

LastStandMedia

What you're describing is, of course, a totally believable worst case scenario. That said (and to be fair), I highly doubt Disney would move forward without an overarching plan. Whether it all comes together in the end or not is, of course, unclear.

Karlos Rey

Loved the first episode. Farout! You have no idea how much people like me have missed this sort of content from you. Dagan and you have an absolutely fantastic relationship and vibe that really comes out in the way you interact with each other! I know I can’t wait for the next episode. :) 🤙🏻Mahalo

Honestly can not wait. I was writing a paper today and have been feeling really down. Hearing you guys shoot the shit about empire was a good way to feel like I was doing something I enjoy rather than something I hate.

Cameron Paterson

As a huge Star Wars fan and a huge Film fan and of course a huge CLS fan I really enjoyed this. Great stuff guys👍👍👌👌.

Jakeytar

When Dagan makes you laugh over “Suck-Ass” or other topics of conversation, it instantly reminds me of laughing at my older brothers’ jokes/remarks. I can’t help but laugh as well!

Ryan Taylor

This episode was absolutely brilliant and I can’t wait to hear more from you guys!

Luke Farinella

This is great. I would love to hear a series on each of the movies in the universe.

Kenny Gutzler

I am midway through, usually hold out on commenting until I have completed the segment. I had to pause it this time to simply say - this conversation rules. Can't wait for more!

2022-01-24 16:04:27 Enjoyed the episode. I'm more of a Empire then Star Wars type of person (those bloody ewoks. Nope, no way.) The Red Dawn gag cracked me up as I'm a big fan of that film. I thought the cinematography deserved more comments. It was by Peter Schusitsky, who is one of the UK's great DP's, who has had a great career over the years, who gave that film a visual distinctiveness beyond the other Star Wars films or any Kershner film. (For example he shoots David Cronenberg's films). He's one of those pro's who people who know film really respect. Also, of interest, for years I have had the making of book on Empire. written during the making, Once Upon A Time, which is done as a diary format and is a fascinating look at the nuts and bolts of the film. Yes, the "I know" was improvised as the scene wasn't working and the director said to For, just try something. Here's the amazon link to the UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Once-upon-galaxy-journal-strikes/dp/0722156529/ref=sr_1_19?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1518821808&sr=1-19&keywords=empire+strikes+back

Joe Schleif

That was a real pleasure to listen to! Thank you! :)

TheBufferPiece

Great episode and I'm happy you read my question. My last name can be hard to get so it's no big deal. It's al-kuh-teeb instead of al-kah-tib.

Tyler Greene

I did not want this episode to end. I would absolutely love to hear both of your thoughts on the Prequels.

Jason Pettet

I love this. I was so sad when it ended can’t wait for the next one. And also an episode on why you think temple of doom is the best. Raiders would like to speak with you!

Kc Wright

Loved the podcast going foward is each topic going to be a full podcast or multiple topics per podcast

Jacob Vega

This is a hell of a good podcast. Bravo guys!

Michael Bonnano

I feel like an old man asking this, but I can't seem to find an RSS feed for this one- Got it for Fireside Chats, but can't find it here. Am I missing something? I use Beyond Pod.

Michael Cline Jr.

When you first became a Patreon, it should have automatically emailed you a link to the feed. In the Apple podcast app, push the plus sign to add a podcast and paste the link in there. I much prefer Pocket Casts, but I couldn’t get the link to work.

Koray Savas

Really enjoyed this episode. Thanks for all the hard work!

Ty Dame

As someone who doesn't have much appreciation for Star Wars it was cool to see hear the perspective of people who really love it.

ScKeptiC17

This was really well done by both of you! Bravo!!

LastStandMedia

Thank you! Moving forward, the topics will vary. For instance, Episode 2 is Ranking the Nintendo Consoles and Handhelds. But, I wouldn't be surprised if we did an entire episode later dedicated to the NES, as an example. Hope that makes sense.

LastStandMedia

Hey Michael, sorry for the delay. Did Michael (Cline's) advice help? Or is there any other way I can be of assistance? If so, message me privately here on Patreon and I'll get back to you.

Michael Miller

I’m a little late, but this was really cool. Keep it up, dudes.

Chris Deadman

As a life-long Star Wars fan, I really enjoyed this first episode. Just a point of interest to note; Boba Fett wasn't scared of Han Solo - he actively objected to him being put into carbon freeze - they were testing the process on Han first before using it on Luke: "The Emperor does want his prize damaged". Good stuff tho - I look forward to a Timothy Zahn episode. PS. Should have called the podcast Super Moriarty Bros.

Christian Doolan

Ah, the feeling of nostalgia - a weird mix of joy and sadness (or is that just me?)! I was a happy wee 4yr old in 1980 - what a great time to be a kid! My daughter loves this film. She call’s it “The one with the wampa!” Great show!

LastStandMedia

Remember: Nostalgia comes from the Latin "nostos," meaning returning home, and "algos," meaning pain. Basically, "painful memory." So, it makes sense that you'd feel a little sad... that's the thing that's lost on most people! =) I'm glad you like the show. And your daughter has great taste!

LastStandMedia

Good point. Thanks! We actually were originally going to call it The Brothers Moriarty. Then we were 99% settled on Dialogue Box. I like the name as-is. I think the former name will come through if we do a YouTube show (maybe an LP series) together one day. We will see!

Eric S

Great listen. I really enjoyed going back to thinking of when I watched the empire strikes back for the first time. On a foot note why was Qui Gon as a character gone so fast. I really liked him and Liam Neeson was great as that character. I agree darth maul could have been a great villain if allowed to develop a little more.

Michal Dudic

Only just got to this, and simply had to comment. I recently got more into stuff that was the zeitgeist when I was a little kid in the 90's and so I had barely caught a whiff of. Buffy, alt-rock of that era, and now here you come with the old Star Wars trilogy which my mom introduced me to in that same time period. When you pitched Knockback originally, I definitely underestimated how much of an effect it would have on me. I have been enclosing myself in a weird 90's comfort bubble more and more recently without even realizing it, and this Empire Strikes Back discussion fit right into that. I have this vivid memory of my mom putting a TV with a VCR in my bedroom when I was home sick, and she rented all three of the original Star Wars movies and watched them with me. I couldn't have been more than 6 at the time. The glow of the blue lightsaber over that bright red neon light of the carbonite room is burned into my fucking skull. This podcast made it all come back for the first time after a very long time. It's just pure warmth in an mp3 file. Thank you.

LastStandMedia

I agree! Killing them both off the bat didn't serve the story at all, so it made no sense, really.

Always86

I think Qui Gon dies in order to become Obi Wan's Obi Wan. I agree Liam Neeson was great. I also think Lucas felt that Obi Wan needed to be Anakin's only mentor in order to have fewer people in the way of his decent.

Aaron Solet

Really enjoying your content Colin. I'm a big SW fan and it was great listening to you and your brother discuss my favorite of the bunch. I was eleven when Empire came out and I vividly remember one of my friends trying to spoil the reveal. It seems foreign today when nothing is really off limits, but I refused to believe the rumors. This relationship just could not exist. Also, one note regarding Dagobah - the cave scene gave me serious chills.

LastStandMedia

It's so funny that you have that memory. That must be the first "ultimate" movie spoiler in history, one we all take for granted today!

Kevin Diaz

Holy crap just read this! Wrapped the Empire Strikes Back Knockback. Amazing stuff, loved it. Especially after a man at one of my tables I was serving last night tried to tell me that Revenge of the Sith was better than Empire. It was quite the debate lol.

Justin

Just got around to listening to this! It is so great! Congrats Colin on launching ANOTHER awesome show. You have a nice little podcast network forming.

LastStandMedia

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah... something sure does seem to be brewing! =)

Seth Eden

Such a great episode Colin, I had to comment on it to let you know that I now think this show was such a great idea. Your brother and you have an amazing rapport and I honestly felt like Dagan at the end in that I couldnt believe I had been listening to you guys dive into the Empire Strikes Back for over 2 hours! I was with you Colin when you first started Colin's Last Stand, I have been listening to you (and Greg) since the Beyond Days can vividly remember the the Great PSN Outtage of 2011 but unfortunately a few months back I canceled my pledge to you. I felt like the quality had slipped in the videos, you had put on hold the very show that I came to CLS for and had announced yet another new show you were going to do, I wasn't convinced it was a good idea. This inaugural episode however has changed my mind, it was a joy to listen to and hearing your brother and you dive into something you were both clearly so passionate about was a treat. Very much looking forward to the upcoming episodes and am happy to say I am back as a patron. The casual, off the cuff nature of this show might be my favorite you have put out yet! Keep it up!

Loved the insights. My fave film of all time and love hearing peoples thoughts on it and always get a different perspective, which is great. Just became a supporter today and already feels like money well spent. Empire stuck out to me too because it was dark and foreboding...so many films today just don't get how powerful it can be for the bad guys to win and win big! Can't wait for more of these podcasts. Keep up the great work!
