Daemon Hatfield isn't only a good friend; he also happens to be one of IGN's longest-tenured employees. I invited him to record an episode of Fireside Chats with me to discuss all sorts of topics, from our shared years at IGN, to how games media is evolving, to how politics is finding its way into every nook and cranny of our lives. As you'll find out when you listen, few professionals in games media have the experience, the knowledge, and the wit of Mr. Hatfield. So lend us your ears!

Stuff like this is why i keep coming back 🤙🏼

Martin

Awesome, great stuff recently Colin!

Marc Boggio

Daemon! Sweet! I haven’t really been keeping up with IGN these days (they do great work, but it just feels like I’ve grown out of the IGN target demographic), but Daemon is one of the voices I miss. Listening now 👍

James Galos

Gamescoop is about the last gaming podcast I listen to. Excited to pass the work day with this one.

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

I’m so happy that you and Daemon are still friends. Daemon is I think about the only one left at ign from when I started listening to Game Scoop! Beyond and the seminal Lost podcast Three red lights like ten years ago I think. Daemon is awesome, really looking forward to listening to this!

Eric Gee

Wonderful podcast - thank you very much for posting this

Bryan Finck

great interview as always Colin, i never took in a lot of Daemon's stuff back in the day so his was a relatively new voice. Good to see someone with the ability to have a balanced life and balanced viewpoint in the media sphere. Keep up the great work, hope you are feeling better about things!

Michael Ferrari

Awesome episode! Daemon is still awesome. In regards to the game prices, I'd be totally down to pay more for games if they stop with these microtransactions and nickel and diming us. If games were more consistent with content, I think a lot more people would be cool with it too. There's a huge difference between paying $60 for a Call of Duty or a Witcher 3, and paying $60 for a game that last 5 hours. Given, I got it on sale, but I just played through Batman VR, and that game is literally an hour long. I think seeing such a variance in quantity, as well as quality, spooks people when talking about the benefits of raising prices.

Daemon was probably the first true face and personality in gaming i was introduced to through ign close to 10 years ago when i first remember seeing on screen personality come to the forefront in games media. I've always thought of him as a very humble and down to earth person with a very fair and honest opinion on all things gaming or otherwise. Over the years my respect for him has only grown after years of consistency and most of all the fact that he never stopped supporting Colin through all the turbulence that he's been through. I think that was huge and it meant a lot to me to see and spoke greatly about his character. Looking forward to this episode.

I hear you close a lot of content with how people will pay a cost for talking to you. My two favorite people in history are Churchill and Patton. Both men have many famous quotes, but I’ll remind you of my two favorite. “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood for something, sometime in your life” - Churchill “Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.” - Patton Keep up the good work sir.

Daemon has always treated me with kindness and respect, and we've had a lot of funny and notable memories together since 2007!

LastStandMedia

Just remember: Length-of-adventure is not the only thing you should be paying for (or worrying about). A tight 10-hour experience could be far, far better -- and worth far, far more -- than a long, middling 50-hour experience. Just my two cents!

LastStandMedia

He really is one of the OGs of the gaming podcast/video movement. One of the pioneers, for sure.

Ross Arbour

I've been listening to GameScoop as long as I can remember. Scoop!

Loved this, Daemon seems such a great guy. Doesn’t seem to carry any real negativity with him about anythingZ Also pleased he hasn’t turned on Colin for not being a yes man. There seems to be a real split with OG games media personalities sticking by Colin but the new class seem to gain traction by hating on Colin? I know it’s unlikely but would be interested in your thoughts on this Colin?

LastStandMedia

The New Class has to make a name for themselves somehow, and it's easier to do that by attacking someone than doing good work. Daemon has always treated me with kindness, and I am glad to call him a friend.

Ty Dame

Loved this episode! Daemon is an absolute treasure, hope you guys can do more in the future! As for game prices, I imagine the numbers show micro transactions, if done properly, are far more lucrative than rising the price of games 10 or even 20 dollars.

LastStandMedia

Thank you! I'm sure Daemon will be on the show in the future. I'm not sure what the right answer is in terms of pricing. It's a complicated question.

Ty Dame

It really is, as long as micro transactions arent tied to progress or giving players an advantage, thats the route I'd prefer.

One of my absolute favorite people at IGN! It warms my heart that you still have some people who ACTUALLY know who you are there in the industry. (And it shouldn't matter, but for some reason the fact that hes such a prominent name makes it even sweeter)

Edwin Garcia

He sounds like a very honest man and a good friend, I’m sure he is 💪🏽

Hose A Contra Razz

Tell you the truth I truly hate read along videos, I feel like the only way to get the news sometime is to watch it, other than that love daemon one of my favorites on ign along with magaffey and peer

Michael Miller

It was great hearing you guys on the same podcast. Brings me back.

Cameron Paterson

Great podcast Colin. Really enjoy playing them while on my way to work and back home again👍👍👌👌.

LastStandMedia

I hate them in premise, but I still find myself watching along on Facebook and Twitter every now and again, so... =)

Joey Finelli

great podcast. nice way to kill an hour at work :)

BettyAnn Moriarty

So, that 'kiss' belonged to a response (above). It's scary how bad I am with using technology. Right, Bud? 😬😂 I really enjoyed this chat. Daemon is one of the good guys. And my respect for him grew even more today. He's so right IMO about real friends 'being' friends. Just my two cents. 😘❤️

The Rose Experience

I actually met you and Daemon at an IGN First Friday long ago, it's great to hear that he simply loves games and is an all around normal guy who doesn't define relationships based on whatever the way some peers may feel. On that topic, we obviously don't know eachother but if you'll allow me a word of advice: stop referring to how people don't like you in games media, it does no good and it shows it's still effecting you (1/2)

The Rose Experience

2/2 Move past it man, you're better than this and bringing it up keeps it near center stage. Your content, voice and personality are too important for some games hive mind and a Napoleon Dynamite look alike to define your content. Fuck em, you're more well rounded, real and have more to say than their entirety put together. Anyway, been wanting to say this and finally put fingers to keyboard. Do you Colin, all the best.

The Rose Experience

Sorry, meant to add this clarification: I didn't mean to diminish the effect of harassment here and I don't blame you at all for feeling as you do, I only wrote this to try and help.

LastStandMedia

Hey Jason. I appreciate your feedback! That said, this episode was recorded on December 6th or 7th. So, I'm not referencing anything specific.
