Hey All,

Let's chat.

Over the years that I've been blessed enough to write, podcast, and create videos for an audience, I've always felt like I could be very open with those that consume what I put out into the world. I suppose this is one of those times of absolute candor.

In short, I'm feeling really, really stressed out lately. I feel like I don't have enough time in a day (or week) to do everything I need to do to keep what CLS has become running properly, while also taking care of myself. I'm maxed-out, essentially, and something's gotta give. I'm finding ways -- usually late at night -- to sneak in some "me time," particularly with a video game or book, but I have to find a little more normalcy in my life, because I can feel myself burning out. I don't sleep a whole lot (4-6 hours a night at most, typically), and the constant glow of my laptop is probably giving me a tan (though, as an Italian man, I do have a natural olive hue). I honestly don't think there's been a single day since March that I've done zero work. Typically, even on days I try to take "off," that means working at least a couple/few hours on something, and those days might exist once a week or so. I'm not trying to complain, by the way. I'm merely trying to give you a glimpse into my existence.

The introduction of Fireside Chats has invigorated a portion of the audience that wanted More Colin. To be honest, introducing Fireside Chats has been a shot in the arm for me. It's been a hell of a lot of fun recording these few shows so far, but it's also added a great deal to my already over-burdened schedule. I had originally placed a subscriber count on keeping it going; then I decided I just wanna do it regardless. That remains the case. I have two episodes in the can with two different people, a third one is being recorded with Jeff Cannata on Tuesday, and I'm pursing a few different guests for future episodes, too. I even have a couple "audio essay" versions ready for recording. Hell, Erin wants to do an episode where she interviews me. Could be fun!

But something's gotta give, and in looking at everything I do on a weekly basis, the only reasonable way I could free up a few hours for myself is to forego the News Burst, which is something I've grappled with for a while, now. Is this a useful service? Is anyone even reading it? Is it a waste of time? I dedicate quite a bit of time to parsing through stories, finding the right way to deliver the news to you, and all the rest, but it feels like this isolated piece of content compared to everything else I do, and I think it's time for it to go. If, for any reason, for me to retain my sanity. If I look earnestly and holistically at all I do for CLS -- research, write, record, edit, and post the shows, deal with a ton of administrative and business-related things, jump head-first into the community, et cetera -- the only thing I'd even be willing to cut at this point is the News Burst.

I'm not declaring that this is going to happen yet; I don't know if people are going to have a major problem at this tier if it does go. At $5/month, you already get the audio version of CLS exclusively, early access to Fireside Chats, and voting privileges in the topic elections. Is that enough? I think it is. You guys represent a major portion of why this project exists; your $5/month (or more) is everything to me and this project, and I don't want to do anything that endangers your happiness with the product.

On the other hand, I think that a better-rested, freer, and not-so-bogged-down Colin will generate better content where CLS shines most: On YouTube and podcast services. Plus, I'll have a moment to breathe. While I've already outlined what I'm going to be doing schedule-wise for the rest of the year (I'm taking a week off for my birthday in October, half of the Thanksgiving week off, and then the final two weeks of the year off, as I believe I revealed all the way back in the Spring), finding a better cadence and more normalcy in my day-to-day and week-to-week is going to go a long way for me. I know it. I can feel it. I need just a little more me time, just a little more sleep, and just a little less anxiety and stress.

I'm blessed to be able to do this for a living, and I'm blessed that the support you guys and gals have given me remains nearly three times higher than my wildest expectations. I try to leave it all out on the field, and I don't want to let any of you down. Not one person. I hope it shows in what I do that I really do care, and I really am giving it my absolute all. The show has improved so much over these past six months because you have all been patient with me, provided me with feedback, and allowed me to craft something that I'm really proud to put out into the world. All ad-free and completely independent, thanks to each and every person reading this.

So, consider this a conversation. What's the best course of action? What would make you satisfied as a Patron? And what else do you think I could do to find a little more balance in my life? The only other idea I've come up with is to occasionally do one episode a week instead of two, but not in the "half-week-off" sense, but in the sense of giving you, say, a half an hour episode one week, and two 15 minute episodes another. In fact, Episode 50 is going to be one of those times, and I'm hoping you enjoy what I've got cooking.

As always -- literally, always -- your feedback is essesntial. I hope you have a great weekend, and I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read and respond.

Your dude, -Colin

Hey Colin, I know for me I don’t get much time to read it. Sometimes it is nice to check out but if it went away, I wouldn’t be horribly sad. Maybe option is get someone who could give some time and have them create those for the community if needed. Hope you can find ways to relax and don’t want you burning out.

Anonymous

I love your input on the news in the news burst personally. However, I care more about you not feeling stressed out and run ragged. If it will make you happier I say cut them.

Ryan Berry

Thanks for sharing Colin. It seems like a reasonable approach, but I recommend you consider hiring support staff to assist with your product development. You know what you would trust to someone as far as tasks, but it's an easy and effective way to get some time back for yourself.

Anonymous

While I do occasionally read the news bursts, I'm almost always slimming to see if there's any stories that really interest me. If the news bursts are really taking up such a significant portion of your time I think it's fine to get rid of them instead of modifying the regular YouTube schedule. And honestly, I can't imagine anyone would be too upset if whenever you're feeling too burnt out you put out one video in a week instead of two.

Anonymous

The News Burst is nice to have, but I wouldn't be mad if it goes, if you need the extra time.

Anonymous

I usually end up skimming it so there's probably more value in axing it. I'm sure most of us follow you on social media where you post commentary anyway.

Anonymous

I love the news bursts mostly because I like hearing your take on current events. I wouldn't mind if they went away, especially if it's affecting your health in any way.

Daniel Boyer

If something has got to give then axe the news bursts. I enjoy them because there aren't many places anymore where I can get news that isn't warped by the media and I love your take as well. However anything huge in the news will likely get a video or time on a podcast anyways. Bag it and give yourself a break.

Cameron Liardi

I’ll be honest, I was reading the News Bursts regularly when we first started up, but lately I haven’t been reading them as much as I’ve been settling into just watching the main show and listening to the casts. If you cut the News Bursts it would not be a significant loss for me. I’d much rather have you be well rested and have a workload you feel happy with. I’ll continue to support you regardless of what you choose so do what feels right for you Colin. After all, we’re here for you!

Peter Campbell

I don't mind it going. Its a nice extra but not why is support this patreon.

Anonymous

Personally I enjoy reading the news bursts and getting your take on what’s happening, but also understand the stress. Perhaps an idea would be to do them less often? Or just when you find a specific article that interests you?

Adam Niksch

Honestly, take care of yourself. Do I enjoy the news bursts; yes (I read them in the email notice). Do I enjoy them enough to add a bunch of extra stress/anxiety to your life; no. And being frank, if all we got were the two videos a week, I'd still support you at the same level I am now. I'm supporting you because I believe what you're doing is essential in this hyper-partisan environment we live in. So take care of yourself man. As long as I have the money to do so, you'll have a supporter in me.

Atlas522

I'm probably in the minority here but I really love the News Bursts. I look forward to hearing your insight into the news stories of the week and then thinking about them myself. If I'm looking at it just in terms of content, and to be completely honest, I would probably drop down to the $2 tier if the News Bursts went away. But if you need to stop doing them to make everything else better and for your own sanity then you probably should.

Anonymous

Honestly, you're the most active person I'm subscribed to on Patreon so if you took out maybe one Fireside chat every other week, I wouldn't complain. I read the News Bursts but I wouldn't complain once if you got rid of those. The main episodes are your bread and butter. You put out a lot of content. Don't stress yourself to an early grave in trying to do everything at once. You put out solid work. Keep it up and go take a breather.

Eric S

I agree that the News Burst would be the best option to cut if we are cutting something. If that’s what you need to cut to gain some normalcy back in your life by all means cut it.

Alex Ball

I'm going to be 100% honest with you Colin. I like every post you make on here, but I never read the news burst. I feel if something is very important you will put it in a video. You need to relax and have some you time. I can't imagine the highs and lows of the past few years from leaving a guaranteed job to start your own business. Then leaving that to follow your heart without any idea of if you could support yourself. I don't need your take on every debatable topic. I love everything except news burst. I appreciate and admire your work, but this is an area you should calm down and let a little stress go away. You started CLS because you love it. If you don't wanna do something, then by all means don't. That way you know you will always give 100% to what you really enjoy and not just have to worry about a deadline. Live a little man. We'll be here. I will at least.

Anonymous

I enjoy the news burst but I usually don't have the time to read it or end up forgetting it entirely. I wouldn't mind if they went away, however I think it should be replaced with something else at the $5 level that doesn't add to your stress.

Cameron Liardi

I like this idea. It would be nice if he just gave us off the cuff responses to stories he felt were particularly relevant. Wide sweeps of all current events is probably overkill.

Josh Squires

First off, I'll admit I'm probably not the target audience for the Bursts, as I already spend my train commute catching up with the news. That being said, I agree that the new "series" you've started somewhat outshine the Bursts. Furthermore, the Fireside Chat, topic votes, and Q and A, give Patrons other avenues to pick your brain on current events. Directing your focus from the News Burst to other areas seems like a good initial solution to avoiding burnout.

Anonymous

I enjoy the News Burst, but I don't want you to run yourself ragged. I'm not supporting you for that alone, so I have no problem with you ending it. I enjoy all of your work and you more than deserve a good work-life balance. Do whatever you think is best for you!

Anonymous

Satisfied patreon here, I'm okay with the News Burst going (I barely have time any more to read them, as a UK listener I normally just skim for news which is a bit more relevant anyway). I'm really happy with the fire-side chats and the possibility of more interviews. Keep up the great work!

Shawn Price

I love the news burst messages but if you need to axe them to keep your work-life balance in order, I am not going to complain. Having personal time is really important, so I hope that can be a priority for you (and it's certainly more important than sending us a news burst).

Dustin Henry

Colin, the news burst is nice, but it is not the main reason why I support this patreon. The addition of fire side chats has been awesome. Your health and well being is what is most important. Also, if there is an article that really catches your attention, you could direct us to it at the end of a video. Take care of yourself and thanks for being so candid with us

Adam carruth

News burst falls on the low end of the priority list for me as well. When I get the notification, I usually just swipe it away for later but never get around to it. Whereas an audio file piques my interest much more, I believe it would be the right decision to focus on those.

Anonymous

Honestly I like the News Burst , but I must admit I only casually look at it and I really believe it wouldn't be detrimental to your success at all. Keep up the good work and can you make more historical videos because I really love all of them!

Felipe Brazao Farinha Carvalhaes

While I occasionally read it, it is the one piece of content that I feel is slightly "out of place". Don't get me wrong, I find it ver informative (and as someone not living in the US, I find it quite unique in its perspective, as I don't get anywhere near this much analysis in American politics on the Brazilian media), but I honestly wouldn't mind not getting it anymore. Specially if it means you're feeling better and more focused on the other content being produced. Anyway, thanks for asking Colin, from my perspective, feel free to cut it.

Anonymous

I think losing the news bursts is the most reasonable thing to cut. I too believe it's too much work output for how little it is consumed compared to your video/audio work, I am, admittedly part of the issue. I just don't have enough time in the day to digest the news bursts, much less the actually news everyday. I'm happy with the decision and thanks for the heads up! Keep up the great work colin, looking forward to the fireside chats.

Anonymous

I think cutting the news burst or even shortening it is the best course of action even tho I enjoy it. Thank you for everything you've done between now and your time at Kinda Funny, you've given so much to your community and you deserve to relax a bit. I'm proud to be able to support a voice like yours in today's society especially

Michael Akridge

Hey Colin, for me I really enjoyed your news burst at first, but that was before you got a chance to do fireside chats and discuss items in your videos. Now I just skim them and wait for your videos/chats. I’m happy to see them go if that means a well rested Colin and balance. A special news burst when you think it’s needed would be nice, but besides that I’d say take it easy dude. You already post 100% more than any other person I support on Patreon. Amazing job, but feel free to take a breather dude.

James Schubert

Whatever you need to do to maintain your mind my friend.

Anonymous

Well, I dig the News Burst quite a bit. I always look forward to sitting down on the evening it comes out and getting your opinion on some of the week’s biggest stories. I can tell it’s a beast to write and source on a regular basis though. Maybe a monthly thing instead? I’d be disappointed to see it go, but you do what you gotta do for your own sanity, man. If we’re talking about trimming stuff I’d probably be cool with you dropping down to an episode a week (I think you talked about it in a post before.) It’d give you more of a chance to focus on content quality and production value, which I think would be better for the product/brand overall. That’s just me though. Love what you’re putting out, Colin. Keep it up! =)

Anonymous

The news bursts are an interesting insight, but let them go. Your thoughtful, well researched videos are enough. And if you cut down to one video for a week occasionally, that's fine. Your mental health is far more important than producing a video that will stress you out.

Anonymous

Keep a healthy lifestyle first and foremost man. You'll always have our support. Love the News Burst but completely understand the need for the change. Best of luck I look forward to reading and watching what's coming!

Evan Bederman

To be honest, in terms of content I prefer the News Bursts to the Fireside Chats, but the latter clearly seems to make you happier so I understand if News Bursts are what have to go. It seems like you're injecting more current events into the main CLS product anyway, but I would've liked to keep that analysis for News Bursts to allow more historical pieces in the main show. In short: take care of yourself first, bro. I'm still along for the ride.

Cory Fowler

If cutting the news burst is what you feel you need to do, I say go for it. The bibliography for your videos are practically miniature news bursts anyway.

Anonymous

Thank you, as always, for your earnest conversation, Colin. As much as we diverge in our political views, I appreciate that you continue to be one of the few remaining honest voices out there. In regards to the News Burst, as far as I am concerned, use my money however you see fit. If you say cutting it will make the rest of the content better, I will take your word for it. A healthy Colin, is a good Colin, and I think all of us would agree. Thank you for being the best mk

Nicholas Swanson

I like the news bursts. But with my time spent with school, it’s rare I’ll have extra time to give it attention. The other content I feel is more valuable. I usually play the fireside chats or CLS episodes in the background while I’m doing work or doing some video gaming. Sometimes I just feel burnt out on the political news. That specifically could be a problem that I and a few others have. But overall, I think the bursts could change to a more casual thing instead of a Drudge style newsletter. Like when a friend finds an article and has gotta share it. That’d save time but still scratch the news itch a bit. Whether it continues or not, I’ll still be supporting the Patreon and I’ll still be happy with what’s produced.

Anonymous

I love the News Burst. I think your breakdown and opinion on current events is valuable and I'd love to keep it around, but I don't mind seeing it go if that's what you feel like you need to do. I do REALLY like the idea of one 30 minute episode on some weeks, though. I'm all for longer form content, and it's really exciting to me what you could do by getting really in depth on some topics. I was never a fan of the two part videos you released, having to watch one and wait a few days for the other half. Consolidating those into one longer video and releasing on it on a Thursday is my vote. If you think that's also a way to give yourself some more free time, I'm all for that. I think that's a great idea, regardless what happens with the News Burst going forward.

Derek Kelsheimer

I like the idea of the news burst, but I never get time to read them. I personally would be fine with my $5 tier not having it. I really enjoy the fireside chat, and try to catch as much of the videos as possible. None of your proposed changes will really sway me away from being a patron though. For me personally, I get satisfaction in knowing I'm helping pay for content that I feel is intellectual and needed. Even if I don't get time to view it myself, I'm glad it's out there for everyone to see and hopefully learn from. Whatever you need to do to make your work/life balance work for you, then I'm on board. Do right by you, and you're doing right by me.

Anonymous

Colin, do what you need to do. Personally, while I think the news bursts are great, if it's that taxing on you, let it go. If you're having a stressful week, put out one show instead of two. While I look forward to your content every week, I'm just glad to have you in my feed. You're working hard, and it certainly shows through your great content and success, but don't burn yourself out. I think I can safely say that most of your Patreon supporters feel the same way. Anyways, keep up the great work man. Whatever you decide is good in my book!

Anonymous

Hey Colin! I've been wanting to share my thoughts with you for awhile on CLS as a whole but didn't want to come across as an ass, so here is my best attempt at feedback. Please don't take anything as anything more than a big fan making honest suggestions. Let me get to your original question first. Do what's best for you man, as always. The news bursts are not a major reason for my support and contribution, so I'm fine with it being axed... or maybe delivered differently. I think your product is becoming muddy, with absolutely no disrespect intended. I love all the content you make but it's hard to explain to people I want to share it with what it is. CLS should be your channel, like ESPN. Sportscenter, PTI, NFL countdown etc live inside the ESPN channel. Your content I feel should be organized similarly. If that were the case you'd have 3 different shows with different formats of giving your viewer info. Some episodes of CLS are documentary style where we learn about a topic. Others are more off the cuff and "hey let's talk about this thing". Fireside chats, which I love, is now an interview/discussion style show. If you did a polished video documentary style once a month, and it was branded so that when it hit people knew what it was, that'd be awesome! Then pepper in your off the cuff not overly produced, Colin, the camera, and a topic talk once a week, branded so that people knew what it was that'd be awesome. Maybe have a segment where it is the news burst?! And last the fireside chats. I love them! But if your going to do a weekly podcast, which honestly I feel is what most of your supporters know you for and want to see you do, you need to follow some formula. It worked for you on beyond and psiloveyou. Anyways, that's just my thoughts. Love everything you do and will support you as long as you keep doing what you do. I think your a smart and good dude who I want to do my part to help succeed. Enjoy your weekend!

ScKeptiC17

I enjoy the news bursts but admit, like many before me, I don’t always have time to read and forget to get back to them. The videos I don’t always watch upon release, but ultimately, they are in my repertoire to watch, and so are the podcasts. It’s an easier, more convenient anytime medium to stay connected. Ultimately you’re a one man band to create - I personally am happy with the content as a whole and support the changes you gotta make to stay fresh. I couldn’t work that kind of schedule, so whatever needs to be carved out to make it happen won’t sway me one bit. Thanks for the open dialogue and content to keep on learning!

Drew Packard

You'll always have my support at the $10 level. Whatever it takes for you to be happy, man. As far as the content, I'd be fine with the News Burst going; I rarely read them now.

Brogan Wassell

I'm gonna have to say keep the newsbursts but maybe reformat? Less content possibly? Maybe have it work more or less like Drudge Report and be blurbs or a single sentence or 2 then links or an image etc. I do like reading them but one thing I've noticed is as time has gone on they've gotten longer so to speak. As for ... maybe other ways to solve it? Maybe hire on some extra help. I know it sounds kinda ridiculous but signing on an extra deck hand maybe just to help with news bursts and getting extra eyes might help. Like maybe get a more conservative friend and a liberal friend (since you tend centrist) to come on as the news burst person. I do like the fireside chats though as someone who works on their own side projects I understand how taxing checking comments, feedback, editing videos and general life busywork can be.

Jeff Pollard

The last thing we want is for you to burn yourself out. The News Burst was great, but I don't have a problem with you dropping it if it will help ease your workload. I like your suggestion of one (bigger) video per week. But, if you made Fireside Chat a permanent show, would doing one video and audio recording per week be easier than the two (smaller) videos and one audio you're currently doing?

Anonymous

The news burst is great. I'm one of those guys who reads it in my email. Also agree that it's probably the easiest thing for you to eliminate and free up some time. I won't cry about it. It's essentially the news I've already heard but with your take on it. It's fun but not necessary. I'd rather keep the fireside chats.

Anonymous

I do value the news bursts as you’re one of the only sources I can trust when it comes to that sort of thing. But if it has to go, what about this... I know you want to keep politics out of Fireside Chats. But what if you mix the two? An episode that essentially is the news burst in audio format. It doesn’t need to give as much insight, but just hearing your candid thoughts on current events I think is valuable to the brand you’re building. They don’t necessarily even need to be researched and written out, just you discussing current events in the “classic, off the cuff, Colin” format. You could spend less time researching and pointing us to a bunch of articles, and just discuss your thoughts on current events. Maybe your workload can benefit from a less formal show like that? I know this may muddy the water, but maybe a half hour CLS and one Fireside Chat/News Burst sounds easier for your schedule? Just food for thought. That being said I will continue to support whatever you choose. And I personally know how important that down time is. So whatever you decide hopefully will help you recharge and give us great content!

Anonymous

I enjoy the news bursts and while I don't click all of the links I do read a least one or two of the articles. I'd hate to see it go altogether, but I care more about you keeping your health and sanity. At the very least I'd say going with a "Last Week Tonight" type approach could work out. Rather than trying to find something to say about 4-5 articles every week you could take what could be considered the "main story of the week" and give us your two cents. Hell, it wouldn't even have to be a news burst as some of the stories that come out in the news could make fairly decent CLS episodes anyway. Just my thoughts on the matter. I'm here and I pay for CLS, everything else is just icing.

Owen

If I could make an alternate suggestion - I honestly enjoy the fireside chats as much as CLS, and I'm glad to hear you want to continue them. What about not doing twice a week episodes of CLS proper and doing one CLS and one fireside chat a week? - As for the newsburst, I do read them every week, because I like the source, and I like that there is an opinion to go along with them. It's hard finding reputable stories, so I kinda let you do it for me. Maybe you could break it up, instead of doing a burst, since you read and such all the time maybe make it a thing where whatever story catches your eye on a given day, you share the story, share your thoughts that you had, and move on, instead of compiling a list of 5 once a week... just do it on your normal time that you're consuming your own content? Just some suggestions. Ultimately cut what you need to cut to make it work.

Owen

I like the idea of CLS being the brand, and the content all being under said umbrella.

Anonymous

Don't burn yourself out, Colin! The news bursts are nice but not a huge deal. Living a busy existence myself, I generally just skim them anyhow. Maybe this is something you can set a subscriber-count goal for, and/or arrange something more community sourced.

Anonymous

For me, it's fine to cut the news burst and also to do just one video a week of CLS. The podcast have been really great and you have been doing a lot of work for one man, so is on you to find the proper balance, I'll support you whatever you decide.

Anonymous

Hi Colin. Really appreciate your honesty. Think I speak for us all when I say I want you to be able to take days off work and be able to relax from time to time to ultimately enjoy your job more. You will have my full support with or without news burst. Cheers from Scotland

Anonymous

Focus on your mental health, Colin. If cutting the news bursts help you regain control over your free time, then please cut them. I care a lot more about YOU, than how much content you put out. ❤️

Anonymous

I like the news bursts to get your position on current events, but also understand how much time/energy is needed for all the content you make. Like some people have mentioned, perhaps there are other alternatives to eliminating them. Go once a month, with the top 3 news. Or ask us for support. I for one would be willing to help you with my own time and am sure others in the community agree. We could try to organize a way to vote on the top 5 stories we thought were most important in a certain month and then you could touch on them.\

Anonymous

maybe not even in written form, but just a casual video of you commenting on the news. No need for high production value.

Alex Castellanos

I second Ryan's comment, and also just add that since you are being supported at a much higher level than you originally thought, this additional help wouldn't really any pre-planned necessary monies to hire. Go find yourself a "Kevin"!

Russell Garrett

So here’s the thing. I messaged you a few months ago about dropping my support down because I needed to save a few extra pennies a month, and that I choose to drop my support from $5 to $2 because I didn’t consume the news bursts. Cut to a couple of months later, I’ve secured a decent payrise for myself. when you launched Fireside Chats I wanted to throw some more money your way so bumped my pledge up to $5 again. My opinion hasn’t changed, I’m not fussed about the news bursts. What I do care about is your mental health and quality of life. You’ve seen great success from this Patreon, but if you’re not finding time to enjoy your success, then it’s not worth it. I don’t like to speak for people, but I’m pretty confident is saying that almost everyone that’s still here is here for the long haul. We don’t just care about CLS but we care about Colin. Do what you feel you need to do. Personally I’d take one polished episode of CLS and one episode of Fireside Chats per week. Anything else would be a bonus. I’d also love to see you work on something more long form, almost like a mini documentary of sorts. Pardon me for telling you how to work, but I feel if you dropped one of those every couple of months you’d have time to chip away at it instead of feeling like you need to get something out to meet a weekly quota. Whatever you decide, as always, I’m here. Peace.

Anonymous

Echoing many others here, as well as yourself, while I enjoy the newsbursts and your take on the weekly events that are happening, I think your sanity and work/life balance is much more important in the long-run. Who knows, maybe one day you can find someone to help you take care of the things that don't require your immediate oversight (e.g. business admin, researching news, etc.), but in the meantime, I know I'm not alone in saying that we'd prefer you to be in a healthier place, for the sake of your sanity as well as the continued high quality of your content. While you take care of us plenty, be sure take care of yourself.

Cameron Paterson

Thanks for being honest Colin. I think you should just do what you need to do to have less stress in your life. Whether that means losing the news burst or doing one episode a week ( I don't even think that the one episode a week even needs to be 30 min Im happy with 15 min if you just wanted to do that). I just think you should do what ever you need to do. I will always support CLS no matter how much content you do and I know many of the CLS community feels the same🖒🖒.

Andrew Sutton

I would rather have the news burst stay and drop to one video a week. It is much shorter to consume the news burst than the videos. I like getting your take on the news of the day. That’s just my opinion. Maybe maybe one of your weekly videos just a news burst?

Anonymous

Don't burn yourself out. Do what you need to do. You have my support and admiration.

Anonymous

Hey Colin, thank you for the detailed message. I've been a fan of yours since the summer of 2014, where you and the rest of the crew of The GOG Show (not to mention a lot of Conversation With Colin) got me through my brief stint of unemployment. I've followed you ever since and became an official Patron not too long ago. As far as the News Bursts, while I appreciate them and do get something out of them when I do read them, I feel like it's the least valuable product of the three. And that's not a real knock on it, I really enjoy catching up on the news with your touch on it. But if something has to go, that's it. I support you in whatever you decide for your well being. I suggest taking a long vacation, out of the country. I'm in Germany right now visiting family, and I always notice how refreshed I feel when I come back stateside after a few weeks.

Anonymous

I love the News Bursts, but I don't really think they are essential. If you feel they need to go, then so be it.

Anonymous

Colin, I really enjoyed getting into the news burst when you first launched, however, with all the other content you are putting out they have fallen to the bottom of my cls priority and I often skim through the headlines and only spend time if it's something I havnt heard about already. In short, I won't be upset if you need to cut them to make yourself less stressed. I'm just glad to have you grating content period. Thank you.

Anonymous

Do what’s best for your health and sanity. I shouldn’t speak for everyone but, we view you as family. We care about you brother!

Anonymous

I read it at first, but no longer read the News Burst. I do, however, watch the videos and listen to the podcast.

Steven Camilo

Less is more, good sir. The vast majority is here for the long haul. Healthy/Balanced Colin = Better content.

Anonymous

Personally Colin, what I am dying to have is your main program on ITunes. I would love to see a main Podcast station with CLS and Fireside in there. Podcast is how I digest most of my information. When you were at Kinda Funny that’s how I listened to you 85% of the time. I don’t always have time to digest your News Burst. Maybe incorporate it into your show towards the end of the week? Like Phil Defranco does.. if it were to go away, I can’t say I would be devastated. Regardless Keep up the great work Colin!

John Schulz

While I enjoy the News Burst, I do not always get to give it the time it deserves to be read, but when I do it's a treat to hear your take on current events. Please do what you think you can handle without sacrificing your sanity. I will miss it, but I definitely don't want you to burn out and fall behind on your awesome videos that still have great content and are very easy to consume but fall nicely into my day when I check out my TV Youtube app as I come home from work.

Anonymous

Just to add to what I see many are saying, the News Burst is great, but I definitely don't always get the chance to read it and give it the time it deserves; based on the amount of work you put in to it. It is not like the audience is losing content, since you are replacing it with the podcast. It isn't like in the future the News Burst couldn't come back. So I'd prefer to hear a podcast and lose the News burst for now and see how the CLS community reacts. Make sure you're looking after yourself man! We care about your health more than the content, so do what you need to do. Much respect, as always, for your honesty with us!

Dan Cadogan

My boy Colin, Please ditch the news bursts. They are super cool and it's almost like training wheels for how to approach daily news for a valuable take away however, I leave comments for you to plan to play occasionally just to remind you that we like you above the ground. I think cutting the news bursts is the way to work smarter. Instead of doing the news bursts you can re allocate that time into as you said spend time with Erin or getting back to some games. You carry alot on your shoulders and I think the news bursts would be the best thing to put down. The fans are all behind that and if you were being supported for just your opinions on daily news reports than maybe there is someone else out there for them, but the ride or die are not going anywhere. -Dan P.S. with the utmost respect the last name is pronounced kuh-dug-in I don't wanna correct you because it's not important but yeah

Anonymous

I like the news burst but totally understand if they have to go. What if when there’s some breaking news you just send out a random burst or something like that? I’m ok with you cutting the burst for your sanity man. Be well.

Anonymous

Dude, completely understandable. Your videos are my favorite content, so for me personally - minimize Fireside Chats (put out one episode every few months) and keep the news burst, but you can also make it more sporadic (just put it out when a news story that feels relevant and interesting comes out). I am happy with my patronage as long as I get a video from you once in a while, everything else is a bonus.

Brent Lindquist

I dig the news bursts and I read each one, but they are certainly cuttable! Being maxed out can work for a while, but like you said, something’s gotta give. Cut the news burst, make things better for yourself, and the rest of your content will benefit. Do what’s best for yourself, and we’ll stand by you!

Domanick Leicht

I think I saw someone else mention something like this but maybe just do an brief news burst audio clip. Then you could probably churn that out quicker and just give quick verbal references to the originating articles. Or cut it man. I was reading them a lot in the smaller format. I’ve been missing them since the change. Do what you want man. If there’s a drop in supporters that’s the breaks but a one man army has to rest. What’s it all for if you don’t do some enjoying. Cheers Colin.

Anonymous

Of all your content the best thing in my opinion you could cut out is the news bursts, it’s not that I don’t read them but I know most of the stories that you’re posting anyway, and a stressed out Colin isn’t going to make good content, dust off the PSVR and get some chill time in!

Anonymous

Whatever you decide works for me.

John Wescott

Hey Colin, I can only speak for myself, but I find the News Burst's to actually be my favorite part of CLS. I was one of those that voted to keep it at 2, smaller updates per week and those were perfect for me to brush up on some news in small spurts while looking forward to the next one. With your move to them going once a week, I now set aside more time for it, but it's certainly something I look forward to. Not sure how this would swing with the larger audience, but I would absolutely have no issue with you moving to one CLS video per week. I have to assume those take quite a big chunk of time and honestly I feel focusing on 1 story/subject in a given week might be a bit easier to handle. Best of luck finding the sweet spot.

Anonymous

I really enjoy the News Burst but it will not be a deal breaker in relation to my Patreon contribution if it goes away. If it needs to go away to prevent burn out then it would make sense to stop doing it. If you burn out then we all lose.

Anonymous

If they aren't there then I will feel less guilty about rarely reading them.. like. I love them, and I've loved knowing they are there for me. But I think you're sense is accurate, and if it means you get to live a healthier life then by all means, drop the news burst my man

Jon Barnett

Colin, I love your news bursts. It's a great, easy way for me to keep up with all of the major events, and having them fit in with my schedule. And I love how much work you put in to writing opinion pieces about each article; it feels like 5 written episodes of CLS a week, in addition to the other two. I don't want the news bursts to go. However; your time is valuable to me. I do want a more energized, less exhausted Colin M. I don't want you to burn out on your passion project, because I would be severely disappointed if it left us. My suggestion? Quit writing full episodes for each news article in the week's burst. Maybe just give us the top five news stories of the week, and the links you got to read them. It still gives us the news, and saves you time. We wouldn't get your in depth opinions, or as much content as normal, but we'll still get extra content and stay informed.

Ross Arbour

You could lose the news burst. It's good but not indispensable to the CLS experience.

John Quinn

The news bursts are good, but I wouldn’t mind if you cut them to regain some more time. I love the new podcast, and think early access to that is a great 5 dollar perk, along with voting rights. Take care of yourself man! You’ve been doing great this year.

Anonymous

The news bursts came as a pleasant surprise when I first signed up. In other words, I was fine paying my 5 dollars a month when all I thought CLS would be was the videos.

Anonymous

Honestly, I appreciate the effort, but I never read the news briefs. Retain your sanity and focus your efforts on making your current content super duper and, as a result, have more time to enjoy yourself on the weekends!

Anonymous

By all means, stay happy and healthy. It's been interesting to hear your take on current events and you even "broke" a few stories for me, but it always felt like a bonus. I'd rather you be more present in your life than write news summaries, my friend.

Lucas Gremista

Tbh, if any piece of news from the burst is REALLY relevant, you follow up with a video anyway. Plus you have the "OCDness" of replying every comment, which we truly appreciate. Drop the burst and stay sane my friend, I personally support you for the human being that you are, the videos are more like an amazing bonus!

Jeshua Anderson

I love the News Burts, and always looked for them cause I love getting your take. But, a burnt out Colin is no good to anyone. So feel free to lose em. Keep up the great work.

Anonymous

I'm fine with loosing the news bursts. Since frequently your videos end up cover big news events anyway (like North Korea or NFL kneeling) I think the news bursts can go. Maybe if something BIG happens do a little blog style written essay about, but I'm loving the videos and I want you to keep your sanity haha

Anonymous

You put a lot of passion into your news bursts, despite it being a pretty throw away concept. It was actually a lot more enjoyable and insightful than most news services I follow. Whilst none of your content has suffered yet, it's good to see you've identified where you could be about to break and the news bursts are definitely the first thing I'd agree that should go.

Dominic Dilullo

My ideal CLS involves much more off-the-cuff Colin. My dream would be to see you revive Washington's Beard and do it over Skype with Mark and Scott. Or record a joint show with Dave Rubin? I know you probably dont want to blow up the whole CLS videos formula but I would sacrifice the 2 weekly videos for a bonafide political podcast. I venture to say this would be more popular to those who followed your previous career too. I assume a conversational 90-120 minutes show requires much less preparation and (I would think) is probably more fun to do. The Fireside Chat with Ramon and your dad are my favorite things you've done at CLS, followed by the News Bursts. So I would rather you cut the videos to one per week if you stick to the current route.

Chris Johan

I would be ok woth just one video a week. I haven't been keeping up with all of the videos and the news bursts. I would not be hurt if the videos and news burst dialed back. I really like the news bursts but I haven't been reading them unfortunately. I did think that they were interesting because I do not like the cable/tv news. I think the call to "Regain Balance" is valid.

Anonymous

Colin, I do read & enjoy the news bursts though my email which I believe you said that you do not get any notification that it has been read. That being said, I'm sure like everyone else here, I want you to be happy & able to have a good work/life balance. While I will miss your opinion & no spin attitude towards news you must take care of yourself.

Kevin Almanzar

I do read the news bursts all the time. I use it to catch up on stories I miss and to see your take on everything that’s going on. But if removing the bursts means a better, healthy, less stressed Colin then do it. I supported you at this level since day 1 when you left KF and will continue to do so because I believe in you and the content you put out. Whatever you need to do to have a better work/life balance do it!

Anonymous

I do enjoy the News Burst and read each of them. But they have been the icing on an already great cake. I support you at the level I do because I want to hear your opinions and thoughts on all kind of topics. I was there during the Kinda Funny times and I am here now. You do what is best for YOU, and don't worry so much about us. We are here for you Colin and we have your back. But I love the Fireside Chats so hopefully those don't go away. Thank you for all the hard work you do for yourself and all of us. Now take some time for yourself man!! Get some well deserved rest.

Misty

I say cut the new bursts. I enjoy them but they aren't necessary

Nicholas Amato

Colin, here's how I look at it. I've listened to you so long that while I appreciate all the content you put out, I'd rather less content and you have less stress and better quality of life. I'll support you regardless, for what it's worth the News Burst is what I'd miss least. I feel like many of us patrons are here to support you, the content is a bonus. Take care of yourself, we understand.

Anonymous

Cut news burst, retain usual two episodes a week format.

Anonymous

If you asked me 2 months ago I’d say I read them everyday but now things have changed and I don’t get to read them as much. I say axe them. Maybe to keep the kind of current event thing going you could replace the last video of the month with a “month in review” kinda deal. It would allow the regular CLS content to be broader and more historical while still giving your take on current events. That’s just idea I had

Anonymous

News bursts is something that I really really liked about your content, because it often helped me track those important pieces of news. However, after changing from daily to weekly, I find that their importance has dropped since they are not up to date, and mostly deal with older news (I know the news are not that old, but I saw them as news ticker or something). The point is, it was a nice thing to have, but ultimately not why I am a backer. I want to know more about history and politics, and I like your passion for them. I'm here for the in-depth videos, and your take on big issues and historical events. I'm here to listen about a sensible middle of the road alternative to our polarized political climate. Axe the news bursts.

Anonymous

Being completely honest I don't read the news bursts most weeks and on the occasion I do it's usually just a skim read through. It's not that I don't appreciate the content and from what I've seen clearly a lot of work goes into them it's just that I prefer if your going to cover a contemporary topic or issue I prefer the video or audio formats. Obviously that probably isn't possible at a rate for it to be timely and continue with the other content, nor do I wish for CLS to cover only contemporary issues as I prefer the historical and other content perhaps more than your thoughts on "headline X or Y".

Anonymous

Cut out whatever you have to in order to be able to release podcasts. Those are easiest for me to consume.

Anonymous

I'm in the same boat man. I love reading them, but I don't always get the chance to. If Colin had enough help, I would say to keep the news burst but to do it in a video format.

Jonathan Rice

Like others have said, I enjoy the news burst but I read it in my email so I dont know if it tracks the fact that Ive read it. That being said, I really like them but I think you should cut them if that gives u more balance in life. Hell, if it was easier to just post the news articles you had been reading or found interesting without commenting on them that would be great bc most times you find more articles that I dont have time to find and I find them interesting. But if you need to cut them for more balance and sanity, I vote cut them.

Anonymous

I think I looked at the news bursts the first week. If anything I found it clutters up your timeline and hides the content I truly signed up for.

Arvel Crynyd

Hi Colin, I have always been a great fan of the news bursts. I used to like the previous iteration of the News Burst when it was twice a week. At that time, most of the times, those things were posted while I was sleeping (9hr time difference and such) and therefore, those posts were sometimes the first things that I read when I woke up in the morning. I always considered it to be a great comment on current political issues, also on things that were (let me be blunt here) non-Trump-related. It was also for me (in some occasions) a creative outlet, because I liked to be challenged and I sometimes felt that some of the arguments lacked some details here or there was another angle towards it. It also gave me and others an outlet to discuss current events. Sadly, I didn't have the time recently to interact more for those discussions, but I still liked reading it. However, as someone who also struggles with work-life-balance. Do something for yourself. A little more me-time. You could also think about changing the time slot for the News Bursts to the beginning or the end of the week. The project manager in you should allocate a certain amount of time that is dedicated to some tasks. However, if you are overloading yourself with new podcasts, shows and other creative things, this means you will constantly jump into firefighting mode because you are jumping from this topic to this topic, thus the quality of the final end products is being reduced (Trust me, your quality is still very high :-) ). But you are still a one-man-operation and I understand the entire research and filming process of a single episode, so it may be sad if the News Burst would have to go, but when it comes to trimming the fat, maybe it's the easiest to cut away.

Anonymous

I would say cut the news posts. I often don't read all of them every week anyways. That's just me though, I know people out there do like them. I just want you to be doing good and live a more healthy life along with putting out the videos that you are proud of.

Anonymous

Hi Colin. When you first started the channel I did keep up with the news bursts but I have to say that I haven't really been paying attention to them recently. Mostly a bandwidth problem on my end. So if you want to cut them I think you should. Your happiness should be the priority here. Cheers.

Christopher Lee

I read the news bursts when they were shorter, stopped once they got longer just cause I didn’t feel like I had enough time to read through it in one sitting. All of that aside, given a choice between either news bursts getting cut or fireside chats? I would choose to keep fireside chats over news bursts every time.

Scott Rabideau

Are you completely beholden to your original Patreon promises? I personally don't think you are, and it seems like you should have the freedom to modify your content schedule/reward tiers as you see fit. We are all here supporting you regardless and I don't think your core ride or die audience will disappear if you were to change things (even drastically - are you stuck with two videos a week?). I think Fireside Chats is a great example of this. They are a great way to round out this channel with more varied content, and they are something you are delivering that was never promised initially. Some might even say they are quickly becoming your best content, making full use of your strengths at interviewing and conversation. As for the News Bursts, I love hearing your take on current events, but I don't often get a chance to read through the entire thing, let alone all the articles linked. I wouldn't mind if you cut them in order to give yourself more time. If too many people complain, and if the news is major enough, you could dedicate one video that week to an off-the-cuff rundown of current events and your thoughts on them (like the recent NFL kneeling video). I know you are working yourself to the bone and you continue to inspire me with your dedication, fan interaction, and amazing content. However, in my opinion, I think you could get away with one video and one Fireside Chat per week, and devote the rest of the week to your normal research/production/admin work and actually living your life (or trying to get more sleep).

Anonymous

I barely read the news burst even though I like the concept of it. The one time i did comment you did respond which was cool along with others here. I'd suggest doing it maybe just 2 times/week (Mon & Fri?) to cover the bigger stories of that week/weekend or something that really struck your interest. Or as someone else suggested have another person do the daily blast and you can read/comment when you have the chance.

Zach Brown

I'd echo much of what's been said already - I love the News Bursts, but often I don't have time to read them, especially to the level that may justify the work you put into them. As you continue through your videos, you hit so many of your opinions on current events in them as well, often citing recent articles with those. Even if you have to reduce the amount of video you produce (as you proposed), it is still well worth my patronage.

Anonymous

Colin I support you in what ever decision you make I have been a lurking supporter of yours and kinda funny since ign days this might be my second post I've have ever written. I only watch you tube and mp3 at my $5 level. Ps. Happy birthday you share the same day as my soon to be 2 year old

Anonymous

At the risk of echoing others, I'd just say do what's best for you and your health, dude. We're only going to get "more Colin" if you're healthy enough to produce it. Take care of yourself! Any and all content is much enjoyed and appreciated!

Anonymous

Often times I don't have time to read the news bursts. It was a good place to start, but I think that cutting it is perfectly fine. Take care Colin.

Kevin Diaz

I read the news bursts from time to time and they’re great but if that what has to be trimmed to make way for time for you then I’m all for it. Regardless I hope you find time for yourself as well! You deserve it :)

Anonymous

I don’t read the news burst :/

Luke Farinella

Take care of yourself first. The content will be better when you do anyway. I don't really consume the wordy news posts myself, so less of that and more loose 'conversation with Colin ' would be a good way to adjust the workload. Sometimes I just want a hot take, and honestly I wouldn't mind more time between the highly scripted episodes, if it meant more of chill Colin just throwing something up with little to know editing.

Anonymous

Colin, I support you because I've always enjoyed your YouTube/video presence. Personally, I have not read the News Bursts, and if you feel eliminating them would improve he video context (not saying it needs improvement), then I'm all for it. I don't "need" anything to replace the News Bursts either. Just keep doing what you're doing!

Anonymous

I read them every now and then. You take care of yourself, Colin. I don't think taking the News Burst will devalue the $5 tier as we get so much from you for the $5. If it helps you have more "me" time, then I'm all for it. You're doing a lot by yourself and the content you provide has been great. Thanks for everything!

Josh in Tampa

I read the news burst. Use links thru email so I imagine those don’t really show. All that said, I totally understand your predicament. If something has to go (and I believe it does to keep you fresh and sane lol) then this would be my choice. Love ya Colin and what you do. Don’t want to see you burn out buddy. Keep up the great work and thanks for being so transparent as always.

Anonymous

It wouldn't bother me a bit if you stopped doing the news burst.

Anonymous

I want you to stay healthy. Let it go man.

Anonymous

Fine by me. Do what you’ve gotta do Colin. Love the content you produce!

Anonymous

Drop the news burst. I liked it at first, but now I get so many emails - I typically end up glossing over it most days. Thanks for all you do. Fireside Chats is amazing!

Anonymous

I truly love the news bursts BUT I can't imagine the time it must take to do all the research and develops

Anonymous

Drop it man and focus on creating more easily consumable content 🙂

Anonymous

I think once a week CLS videos and integrate News Burst to Fireside Chat. I think we all like to hear what you have to say. But reading is really restricted to us $5+ Patreon and only on Patreon. My two cents

James Galos

I enjoy the news burst because I am a news junkie and hearing an honest opinion on everything is great to keep me honest and not one sided. With that said if you burn out then you won't be able to do anything. My suggestion is pick a news story or topic of the week pull a few opinions in from online keep everyone informed on the important issues that get lost in the noise.

Anonymous

I've always enjoyed the newsbursts and I'm always interested in what you have to say. However, I've always wondered how much time and energy you must have to put into them. In the end, I want you to enjoy the work you do and not to let it stress you out. You have a strong work ethic and you're also inspired to do a lot but when you're self-employed it is really easy to overwork because there is no set time when work ends. Watching your content over the years, i can see that you have a tendency to feel that what you are doing is never enough. Just want to be clear, and I'm sure I speak for a lot of the community. We LOVE what you put out so please feel happy about it! Set reasonable goals, have a good work/rest balance and don't feel guilty about it. We love your content and are happy with whatever your output is. Personally, I have no problem with you cutting the newsburst.

Anonymous

I enjoy the news burst when able but I have always wondered how you find the time to make as much content as you do. I'd be okay with that being cut since you produce plenty of other content. I'm a $5 patron because I believe in you and your content, so the benefits for me are that I get to support you and not that I get stuff early or in different versions, although that's nice. Do what you feel is best on this one. <3

Anonymous

I honestly stopped reading the News Burst long ago. It just doesn't fit in with my routine. I'd vote drop it and focus on producing other content.

NuFlash

I have enjoyed your news burst but I saw do whatever works best for you. Maybe even throw some of your thoughts on the news in to the fireside chat every now and then

Anonymous

I honestly stopped reading the news burst a while ago. Do what you gotta do. Keep up the Fireside Chats though!

Anonymous

Drop the news burst

David McKinstry

I like the news bursts a lot. But I haven't been getting notifications from the app on any of your stuff lately. I'll have to go through my settings and figure it out. That being said. If it's too much, drop it. You'll be no fun to watch if you are exhausted all the time

Jeremy

Feel free to drop it as far as I’m concerned. Work like balance is paramount.

Anonymous

I don't read the news burst. It's a excellent piece of clarity in a confusing news cycle but I rarely have time to read through it completely. If it's not audio, it's hard to fit in my schedule.

Anonymous

I have read a few of the news busts but they are not a part of my routine and difficult to find the time to read for me. I'd be totally cool if you dropped it.

Smokey Joh

The news bursts are super cool as an idea, but yeah they must be time consuming. I think people just want more of your opinion on things thats all. Whenever something goes down, I always look to twitter to see your thoughts on the matter, or any insights you have to offer. Maybe an easier idea would be a current events AMA for $5 and up subs every fortnight for like an hr or so. Less time consuming for you, and a more direct line for us! Win/win!

Anonymous

I do really enjoy the news bursts and I do view them as one of the few true sources of unbiased look at the news so I would be sad to see them go. On the other hand I don't want to see you burn out with the time you have to put into those. So prioritize what you need to do in order to keep providing the great content, if it's between this and the new podcasts you are doing I would keep the new podcasts.

Anonymous

Same! I highly enjoy the videos and fireside chats, have found ways to integrate them into my weekly routine, and would rather CLS time and focus be on these items. Colin, you work too hard brother! Take more time for yourself!

Micheal Boudreaux

If you decide to not to do the News Burst, I'd just people check out Eurasia's newsletter, the Signal. It comes out every Friday and is produced by the "greatest collection of international politics nerds the private sector has ever seen." The company focuses on analyzing and understanding political risk and does a great job selecting and detail stories!

Anonymous

The News Bursts are enjoyable and informative, but time draining (for both of us). Maybe do one weekly, or better yet, ad hoc. When you want to share a news item or two, but don't need to do an entire show on the topic(s). My 2 cents...plus the monthly donation of course. Thanks for everything you do!

Anonymous

I think it’s fine to forego the news burst, but I hope you’ll also consider hiring someone to help you with tasks that you can delegate. Not sure if you’ll ever reach normalcy without someone else to rely on. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we want you to find a way to balance your work and life, so you can sustain your output.

Anonymous

I like the bursts but if you need the time to relax and chill out a bit go for it. I know how hard it is too juggle many things for work. u decide I will keep up supporting you Colin. Thanks for everything u have already done and will continue to do 😊

Anonymous

I think one solution is to do a news burst when there is an important development or if it pertains to a cls video. No need for the super in-depth analysis of every item. Maybe use the effort of news burst to flesh out a internal thoughts. Like a way to think aloud. This will make patreon notifications have more weight.

Anonymous

I'm fine with you dropping the news burst, trust me I'll still support. I also wanted to let you know that I am really loving the new podcast. That's my favorite thing you're doing now, more than the YouTube videos. I just finished listening to the episode with Ramon and I really enjoyed it. Try not to stress yourself too much, we'll always be here for you. Much love to my boy Colin!

Anonymous

The News Bursts are interesting, but if they went away I wouldn't cry foul. And if it means that you'll have a little less stress, then do what you need to do. The last thing I think anyone wants is for you to burn yourself out. We're all in a little bit of uncharted territory here, and this is a trial and error process for both the audience and for you. So do what you think is best for your sanity, happiness, and health. And, if you don't necessarily want to completely abandon the News Burst idea, maybe just have it be something you share when you find a particularly interesting article that you don't think you'd cover otherwise.

Anonymous

Do what's best for you, dude. Everyone here loves you and work, so do whatcha gotta do! We all want a happy Colin, as well as great content - I'm sure those go hand in hand. I'll still be a patron either way! <3 All the best.

Anonymous

Although I enjoy the news bursts, they are my least favourite aspect of CLS and so, if they have to go, then by hell, let it! Haha. PLEASE take care of yourself my boy Colin M. Also, maybe instead of a regular video, once every 2 weeks, come out with a very loose styled off the cuff discussion of the news and your thoughts.

Anonymous

While I personally enjoy the news bursts and think the level of engagement they offer with myself and maybe some others is amazing and really separates you from other creators, I understand. I ran my first business 20 hours a day 7 days a week. Days off were really paperwork or catch up days and in the end I couldn’t maintain my sanity. If they offer you that much stress then I agree they should go. Have you thought of doing a monthly AMA, that way we could still hear your opinions on the news burst topics but in more bite sized chunks that should be less stress inducing for yourself.

Dan Sievers

The news burst is great, but when my schedule gets busy I rarely have the time to read it. I’m loving fireside chats and would definitely prefer that content over the news burst. I hope stopping the news burst helps cut down on stress and frees up time for more personal pursuits. You gotta stay sane somehow!

Daniel

I do enjoy the news bursts, but I rarely go out and read them myself. I would still be a Patron if you only did one 15 minute video a week, but I might be in the minority. You do what you need to do so CLS can last.

I rarely got to the news burst because I usually read the news on my own anyways so it wasn't a top priority for me to get to. I'd be perfectly fine letting it go.

Anonymous

honestly didnt even know about them. I really just love the podcasts

Shawn Cassidy

I read them a lot in the first couple months but it's definitely not something I prioritize anymore, so that seems like the most logical content to remove.

Anonymous

The news burst are good reads. I’ve read them the first couple of months but since then I haven’t had a chance to catch up and read them. By the time I do get around to doing it, it’s old news. I support them going and you focusing on everything else especially the podcast which is great!

Anonymous

As a $5 tier patron, I feel that I’m getting far, far more than my money’s worth in terms of content. Two episodes a week, one fireside chat podcast episode a week, one news burst a week and not to mention hearing your thoughts/updates on CLS posted here on Patreon. If you want to make the fireside chats a semi-regular thing (perhaps record a few podcasts all in one week, then slowly release them every other week or even every two weeks), I’m totally fine with that. If you decide that a weekly news burst is too much, perhaps you can just send one out only when you feel there are stories that you truly want to share your thoughts on. One, longer CLS episode instead of short shorter ones doesn’t sound like a shortchange at all. In fact, sometimes I’d rather you go more into detail on one topic than split your work between two different topics a week. Bottom line is, we’re getting a plethora of stuff from just one man, so if you decide to pump the brakes on a few things, don’t feel like you’re underserving us!

Bud, you have the most incredible, decent, fair minded individuals following and supporting you. It makes me super emotional-in a good way. Blessed a million times by them, indeed. Do what you need to do, Col. Like so many others, I'm right behind you- always. Love you so much. ❤️😘

Brent Lindquist

I want to add that, although it would be a big step, I agree with some of the folks here who have floated the idea of just one video per week. It's easy to forget that it's just you steering this ship, and having only dipped my toes into the whole video editing thing, it seems like a great deal of work to research and produce two videos in addition to a podcast (which has been really fantastic so far, by the way). Don't get me wrong, I love the two videos per week and I eagerly look forward to them, but if it's burning you out to do that much, then I'd be more than okay with cutting one. I know it's a big step away from what was originally offered by this Patreon, but I wouldn't be swayed at all by a decision like that.

Sam

Tbh I rarely read the news bursts so I’m willing to live without them!

Ryan Blushke

I definitely look forward to the News Burst every week, but I will not remove my pledge if you decide that removing it from the weekly schedule is the way to go.

Anonymous

I am going to keep my pledge either way, but if I'm being honest I would still like to hear your take on current events if not on a weekly basis maybe a monthly basis then. Take the stories you have heard throughout that month and give us your take on your top five. That being said I hope you can find that balance because I love what you are doing with CLS and I don't want you to burn out.

Anonymous

You have my support, no matter with or without a news burst. More content is always great, but as long as I see my patronage contribution going towards a great and refined product, I have no qualms.

Alec Shaner

I'm okay with no news burst at all. Personally I prefer the history episodes over current events anyway!

Lewis Creech

Colin, thanks for being so straightforward. I am a weekly reader of the news burst, it melds well with the politico playbooks. After consideration, the enjoyment of the news burst is the insight and experience you provide to the stories, the stories which news-minded folks would already probably have gotten from other outlets already. While not exactly the same this service this could also be done through more regular checks of Facebook and Twitter feeds... I did/do? particularly like when you take to Facebook for a few paragraphs on a political/social issue you are really passionate about as you have done a few times in the past. I do think there is other ways to be vocal on these weekly issues that don't require the time dedication those burst currently provide. Society member tier would still be well worth what we get for it. Your continued enjoyment of this endeavor is important and fully support this balancing.

Anonymous

What if, instead of writing a weekly news burst that is only relevant for a brief period of time, you highlighted a single story that you felt was most important? This could even be a freeform 'podcast,' which could save time? At least then your thoughts on a particular story would be perpetuitous. I don't know anything about production though, so maybe thats not actually a way to save time. Anyhow- my support isn't tied to the newsbursts, to be clear.

Michael Bonnano

Colin- Your candor is refreshing. I enjoy the News Bursts. I do look forward to them. The podcast early access isn't a difference maker to me. I enjoy the podcast, and look forward to it, but I listen to several of them and simply wait for it to show up in my feed and listen to it with the others as they come out. Having one episode instead of two is my preference.

Ben Blaney

Take some time off if you need it, that's important for content, always.

Anonymous

By all means cut the News Burst if it saves you a meaningful amount of time. Burnout is no fun. You got burnt out on the games industry and it would suck to see you burn out on CLS in any way.

Joey Finelli

I pay for a episode of CLS. As long as i get one of those you can rest easy for everything else.

Niall Prendergast

I dip in and out of the news burst dependednt on the news. CLS i am enjoying but I think I prefer the more free style conversational podcast style. Not sure if the prep would save time but those are my feelings. Thanks Niall

Anonymous

New Bursts are great but I prefer video/audio content since I listen while I drive. If it makes your life less hectic I vote for removing the News Bursts

Chris Eboli

I stopped paying much attention to the news bursts once the timing of their delivery changed. I much prefer the podcast and would prefer to see your time being spent on that

Anonymous

$5 patron here, & while I do read & appreciate the News Bursts, I'd feel no ill will losing them for your sanity's sake! Also super stoked for the Jeff Cannata episodes, y'all are my two favorite Internet personalities. Often my heart aligns more with Jeff but my mind more with Colin. I find it to be a great balance lol.

Anonymous

As much as I love the idea of a curated new list I just don't have time to read it let alone the articles that go with it. I don't even have time to read your synopsis of the different articles. If something has to go I'd be ok with it being news burst. Maybe you revisit it later with some revamped ideas or delivery. Thanks for all you do.

While I'm definitely a fan of the news bursts, I can absolutely understand the need to cut down on content (one man can only do so much), and this probably makes the most sense to cut.

Anonymous

I have no issue with the news bursts being cut; while I do enjoy them, the other content is much more valuable to me.

Anonymous

I personally pay no attention to the news bursts. I feel I can do the research myself if I wanted to. I am a much bigger fan of the videos you do as well as the podcast fireside chats. Colin I personally would rather you take as much time as you need to take care of yourself. Get some more sleep and do whatever it is you need to do to live a healthier life. PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF COLIN.

Koray Savas

I personally stopped reading the news bursts awhile ago. It was a bit too much content for me to dig through. That’s why it was an easy vote for me to make it once per week, and why it’s an easy decision for me say: Cut it! I don’t think I’m alone in saying that we’re here to see Colin M. do what makes Colin M. happy. You’ll always have my support regardless.

Anonymous

Hey Colin! News Bursts are great but please axe them if you truly believe it will improve your everyday life!

Anonymous

Cut it man, i personally can't keep up. I try and digest as much content you put out, but i never get to really dig into the news blast.

Bryan Finck

I consider myself one of the bigger fans of the news burst, and I would gladly see it go if it means that you don't wear yourself out and get sick or worse due to stress. I'm sure somewhere along the line a story will catch your eye and you could do a deep dive on it, but otherwise your focus should be on the things that make you and the majority of your patrons happiest. I think the one longer episode per week sounds promising if it has the effect you want it to have on your sanity. I'm sure I speak for everyone here in saying that I appreciate you asking us, that's no small deal. Take care of yourself!

Anonymous

I agree with all of those above - cut the News Bursts! We appreciate all of the content you provide but I don't believe anyone wants you to risk burnout to maintain every content stream. As you introduce Fireside chats, which I have thoroughly enjoyed thus far, it makes sense to cut the News Bursts.

Anonymous

I’ll be honest, without the News Bursts I’ll probably drop down my pledge. I’ll always support the channel, but I’ve really enjoyed the News Bursts and I like being able to get at least a bit of your perspective on current events as well as being exposed to events that flew under the radar for me. I enjoyed those more than the podcasts, but that’s just my personal preference. It looks like the decision’s already been made, but hopefully if you’re able to hire on some help and add the News Bursts back in maybe some other form, I think that’d be really cool. That being said, it’s all about quality over quantity and I’m sure we’re all in agreement that you need some time to yourself and to not be consumed by your work. I’ll always be happy to support your channel and continue to look forward to whatever CLS has in store.

News Bursts provide me with some helpful news, but I agree with you that it would help make yourself a little happier and freer to pursue your other projects. I'm willing to sacrifice that for some kickass Colin for sure.

Anonymous

I love the News Burst and I look forward to reading it every week. However, I would much rather you be in good health and not burn yourself out. If cutting the News Burst ensures that, so be it.

Anonymous

Honestly I think News Burst, one video, and one podcast a week is plenty, and that keeps it well rounded. I would keep the news, and cut a video.

Leonard Jacobson

I don't mind the news burst going! I do enjoy it on occasion and I'm sure there those who rely on it for news opinion, but I'm definitely more interested in Fireside Chats and the regular content.

Bryan Silva

As a busy guy myself I find it works best with one video and podcast a week. I do enjoy the newsburts but at the rate of news, fake news, tragedies, etc it can be exhausting to keep up with. I’d say maybe a monthly recap of what happened news wise? If that. Quality over quantity my friend! 🤘

Anonymous

I don't read the news burst very often since I don't come on here very often. So to me personally I wouldn't mind if it went away

2022-01-24 16:54:59 Work / life balance is a big deal mate. I struggle to keep on top of news bursts, and I only have to read them! If I had to digest and regurgitate news & thoughts to an audience, it would be like being forced to do a written live commentary of a neverending tennis game ... Back & forth, serve, return, Trump, Hillary, on and on. Be happy, cut the newsburst totally or maybe a Monthly roundup if you feel so inclined. If you lose some $5 members as a result, that doesn't really matter much if you get the balance right and can produce content for twice as long and keep the fire burning. 🤙

For me, I love the Fireside chat audio, but I would love video if it too. That in and of itself would be a massive thing to me.
