Hey Guys-

Here's our second round of coverage from the recent National Rifle Association meeting and exhibition which occurred between May 27-29 at George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX, just days after the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde which took the lives of 19 students and 2 teachers.

In this episode, we gain access to the NRA Exhibitor Hall and spend most of our time on the Second Amendment side of the aisle, with the goal of finding some some common ground with pro-gun folks in regard to increased background checks and mental health evaluations.

We also gain entry to the NRA's annual 'Concealed Carry Fashion Show,' interview an RPG salesman, and talk to a passionate piano man from New Orleans.

Next episode will take place in Uvalde, TX.

Hope you guys enjoy

- Andrew, Nic and Evan.

Dude I wish this guy was right about education being free holy fuck that'd be tight.

This was a masterpiece.

Dude just said : "That dumb sunovabitch drove 300 miles! I would have just drove 10" without a hint of sarcasm.

UltraBlake

Never a dull moment, huh?

Quint from Jaws

Stomach sank when I saw the Uvalde water tower. Thank you for this journalism

Gavin Manley

The common ground was so easy to find, but they're too busy hating each other to bother doing anything.

Chris

This stuff is wild lol, making guns obtainable through a licensing system with upkeep like your driver's ID is perfectly logical and would chase away most of these kids who are usually too anti-social to even talk to their family. Filling out that form is fast and pretty effortless atm, but that really needs to change.

Anonymous

holy shit Robin Williams is still alive

Hey Andrew , I'm a former Nra employee ( was not my first choice but needed health insurance) if you ever want some info on them hit me up.

I cannot handle that dude with the belt that has both a holster and a cup holder.

The kid that was shouting across the street was insufferableeeeee You know he's gotta be a fucking psycho with a porn addiction - no other reason to obsess like that

Thank y'all for covering all of this. From a Texan who wants better laws in place

This one made me question reality to the point where I was genuinely expecting them to pull a gun out from under the baby's shirt during the "fashion show" 😱

Klovar

6:07 that lady has the worst posture i have ever seen in my life

Who else thought that baby was carrying

Anonymous

I'm real glad that dad was there to back up his boy with the stats on mental health

Anonymous

Andrew should have asked dad about the most popular porn category, since he's the number guy in the fam

that's 1 proud papa

E C

This was good. I know I'm going to get an AR15 soon, but definitely think red flag laws and mental health evaluations and community input is important. I've left plenty of hateful voicemails on the Uvalde chief's voicemail, flamed Abbot's social media, but damn - I don't think every AR needs to be taken away. But NRA kooks weird me out to no end.

When that guy with the bullhorn responds with "are you serious?" I laughed for 3 minutes.

Some people really only have black and white thinking... to them its either right or wrong and there is no grey area ... how can you compare abortion to a 2nd mass shooting at an elementary school.... like how does your brain just ignore the vast differences between the two?? :/

Anonymous

MA has a licensing system and has the lowest rate of gun violence in the country. Coincidence? I think not.

FrivolousExamination

Good journalism! Show people on both sides. I've learned a lot about people who are different from me in your videos. Thanks, Channel 5.

Just the random homophobic slur being shouted at 6:11 - classic.

The solution is easy: Pass the "Make Muskets Great Again" law. Only legal form of firearm allowed are muskets. Anyone caught in violation is sentenced to capital punishment via a firing squad of musketeers.

What kind of pussy needs an AR to hunt with

Anonymous

Get the last guy on Joe Rogan( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

E C

Antelope, hog, elk, self defense. It'll be chambered with .762. Mostly in it for hunting, but I've got a few insane neighbors that have threatened me so I'm down to be armed.

Andrew R

All of you here in the comments are a bunch of idiots. I love everyone in the comment section 🥰

Anonymous

Even if they ban assault rifles, they are not going to take away ones that have already been sold. This will keep any new 18 year olds from buying them for their birthday kill spree. … and no one will want to sell them their own precious irreplaceable death idol.

E C

I don't think people who own AR15s consider them irreplaceable death idols. Especially in states that are not going to enact any changes. It's pretty nice hitting targets from 400 meters with the same rifle you can do hog hunting with. It's about plinking for most.

Blue Cheese

Even though I find many of their views distasteful, it’s fascinating to see how some people live in a totally different world than my own. For many people this kind of thing is normal, “of course it should be this way, why would it be any other way?” Reminds me of the opening scene of The Wire where a police officer is talking to the friend of someone that repeatedly stole from the late night craps game and would always get beat up for it. He asked him “if your friend would always grab the money and run, why would you even let him in the game to begin with?” The guy that he’s talking to doesn’t even seem to understand the premise of the question. He said “you’ve got to, this is America, man.” It feels like we live in a system of institutions deliberately set up for tragic cycles, with no sign of genuine change.

JG

Captain is right, inspire the youth to do better and they can achieve. Im sure he was a pretty interesting guy.

Anonymous

IMO Red Flag laws are like no knock raids, they’re only good for getting people killed. But I agree with you about the mental health evals, if they implement it in a way thats fair and doesn’t serve to just keep as much people as possible from owning a gun it can be pretty useful in preventing psychos from having one.

Anonymous

I legitimately do not understand the argument about needing assault rifles as a check against a tyrannical government. At this point, if the U.S. government wanted to kill you and your family, they could do so with the click of a button and a targeted drone strike. Like what the hell is any gun going to do against that?

E C

Have there been instances where people died due to red flag laws? I’m definitely open to learning about that. I guess for me I think of my friend’s dad who leaves loaded guns all over the place in the presence of children and the family has been slowly confiscating them but there’s nothing preventing him from buying more. Definitely a niche scenario though.

Anonymous

perfect ending

Anonymous

If any of the US Army's efforts in Iraq and Syria are anything to go by, poorly trained civillian militias in urban environments with pretty mediocre weapons can actually hold their own against the US Military shockingly well. I think people overstate how capable the US Military are; they're not really very good at fighting off large scale urban insurgencies, and then there's the political issues around using things like drone strikes on home soil, which isn't something they'd likely do unless things are getting real bad. I still think these NRA dorks are total clowns, though.

Anonymous

The initial run of Robert Evans' It Could Happen Here podcast is a really fascinating (and horrifying) look at this stuff if you want a pretty well informed look at how civillian insurgencies in the US might go down in the modern day.

Quil_

I love channel 5

Anonymous

Iraqi insurgents, just as in vietnam, were sponsored and funded by neighboring states with material interests. furthermore, a common tactic of destabilization frequently used by u.s. intelligence is to just pump guns into civilian populations and watch the magic happen.

Anonymous

@E C I know there have been a few where police have shown up and either the person in question or the officers ended up dying due to a either the officers either being way to antsy or the person being really protective of their weapons for a variety of reasons. Overall there have been multiple instances of people just reporting those who although are a bit standofish or abrasive didn’t seem to actually pose a threat to anyone and were more social outcast that people didn’t like or were paranoid of rather than potential killers.you can look it up and find a couple. And yeah your friends dad is a bit of an idiot, I don’t really mind having your guns lying around for the most part but if you got kids around that’s a completely different story.

Last year I spent 6 months with a officer recruiter for the USMC because I wanted to become a better person. One night I went drinking with the recruits and up until that point I had never heard the word f***t so many times. I thought gen Z would be different but I realized these dudes were chasing an attitude where homophobia is normalized. As a gay man I recognized there was no place for me still in the armed forces. Glad I don't own a gun, weapons are ill omens

Anonymous

These pro-gun / 2A / NRA stans are moronic. I wish Andrew would ask them this: If your Second Amendment protects the right to own and carry a high-capacity, high caliber military grade rifle such as an AR-15, then why doesn't it protect your right to carry a fully automatic rifle such as an AK-47 or 63? Or more destructive weapons like a machine gun or RPG? Hmm, it's almost as if there's limitations to the Second Amendment.. Second question: why does ANYBODY need a high caliber rifle with 30-100 rounds? Why? If not to kill mass numbers of people, then why do you need it? Magazines on all firearms should be limited to 6 rounds, IMO. Third question: why should any Joe Blow be able to buy multiple military-grade firearms, body armour, and thousands of rounds of ammo in the same week? If not to kill mass numbers of people, then why do you need it? Fourth question: If guns aren't the problem, why did the NRA ban them from their convention after Uvalde?

Anonymous

NRA guy: I know this isn't normally your thing, you just let people talk Andrew: *lets him talk*

Anonymous

the shot of them arguing across the street starting at 4:00 is a really great visual metaphor, as well as the cut back to him calling the other guy an idiot after saying they have humanity or soul or whatever. y'all got some of the best documentary and journalism work happening right now.

Buz Lee

Dude at the end is a legend

M.T.

Could you expand on your experience with the USMC, like what drew you there, any other things which drove you away? Really interested to hear more of that.

M.T.

Army vets said during the 2014 Ferguson riots that the SWAT dispatches had more equipment to quell American protesters than some soldiers had been given in Afghanistan. It's tough to make Iraq comparisons because we're closing in on 20 years since that happened, the military probably played its cards close to its chest for what it could/couldn't do (then if not since), and the amount of surplus gear going to municipal police forces hasn't exactly decreased in the aftermath of 1/6/21.

Josh Weyland

that ending transition... GODDDDAMN

Alden Rizor

The captain had the best vibes

Adz

I still don't understand how in the hell an RPG is legally allowed to be sold to civilians. What the fuck

Anonymous

The cut back actually seemed like a weak "gotcha" editing move to me that is more reminiscent of old AGNB vids. The kid's inconsistent statements spoke for themselves.

Anonymous

That kid’s father should be held responsible for the amount of Fox News talking points this kid has OD’d on. Pretty sad he has to ask his Dad for a statistic he couldn’t remember as he spewed his nonsensical beliefs

Anonymous

tranical government is the reason we need funding for public education, not AR-15s

Anonymous

"The problem isn't the guns, the problem is a people problem, mmmkay"

E C

I appreciate the insight. I can see how it would backfire more clearly now.

Anonymous

What is your definition of military grade or high caliber? Because an AR-15 are neither of those things. And what is an AK-63? And 1) before 1986 you could buy an automatic weapon and you still can as long as it’s made before and shipped to the US before that year or if you an FFR and you can buy an RPG even with the explosive ordnance I believe you just need a license and a lot of money to buy ammo with any kind of explosive in it. As to why I dunno, hunting or self defense? That’s why they are used most of the time and if you don’t get it you probably never will until you talk to people who aren’t radical about their opinions on it. For the fourth one, probably because they figured they’d take less of a hit banning them in Uvadale and avoid an even bigger whiplash? Idk but either way the NRA doesn’t represent a lot of gun owners and just because they do something to avoid a public mob doesn’t exactly mean that the mob is right. I understand where you’re coming from but I don’t think you really know enough about guns and hunting judging from what you’re saying and I’d encourage you to do a bit of research into guns, their history in the United States, and the process of actually owning one before suggesting how to police it.

Anonymous

@EC No problem man, just happy we can have a civil convo. I really like your idea on psych evals and think that if we can find it way to implement it well it would be a great middle ground.

E C

@Eutikus Thanks, I’m happy to have gained fresh insight and to have shared some. I I even gave pause to the psych eval topic. It’s definitely difficult to implement equitably. Sounds okay on paper, but I can see how discrimination could become a factor. I’m fortunate to have telehealth covered therapy and noticed that of the 100 therapists offered only one is African American. He’s one of my favorite people in the world, but if white people are determining whether African American/black people can get a license then that could go south. I definitely don’t know how to fix this problem.

Anonymous

I feel like a lot of people would probably defect from the military as soon as they start pointing guns at the people they swore to defend the rights of.The military isn’t made up of emotionless husks that carry out the will of the government without question, its in the oath you take that if you’re being given an order that’s unconstitutional you are obligated to disobey it.

Anonymous

@EC Yeah it screams Jim Crow if it were ever implemented without some serious safeguards. I wouldn’t either tbh, but regardless it would be worth looking into to find a solution.

Tim Furlong

I want to see these govt tyranny gun types go up against modern military hardware. You know they have an Air Force, right? They have guns that can shoot you from 26 miles away, that AR is doing nothing

Anonymous

People having guns doesn't mean they will outshoot the feds or military, it just means the cost for the gov to use force is increased, the Bundy Standoff is an example of this being effective. That shit probably wouldn't work in a country like where I live.

Anonymous

Man let me tell yall something. I live in switzerland where 1/4 of the population has a STG90 and we had roughly 20 people killed in 100 years from any type of shooting. BUT! We cant carry guns, we canMt just get a gun like candy, we can‘t just shoot them anywhere we want. We‘ve got legislations, regulations and on top of that a working government. Stfu about NOT banning AR15s for the general people. If you‘re not in the army you don‘t fucking need a gun period! Tell me one good reason to own a gun, if your country is the most privileged and greatest of all. If yall have gun problems you just move down couple of places in my ranking man. Guns, drugs, corruption, fallen government, homeless people, yall are delusional if you try to tell me that the usa is anything than a second or third worl country man

Adam Davidson

You live in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territory, or Nunavut and have to defend yourself from Polar Bears. Or you are indigenous and hunting is part of your culture… but other than that, yeah if you aren’t in the army you don’t need a gun.

Adam Davidson

My favourite part of all of this is when that kid was like “I want to hear your opinion” and Andrew asked another question and got him talking again. Andrew you are a GOAT and Nic and Evan are amazing newswing men. I truly hope I get to meet you one day but you gotta come to Canada!

Anonymous

got it. makes sense. do yall hunt with ARs? we do hunt aswell but we use hunting riffles and bows and shit. polarbears aint a problem here though so cant relate hah

Anonymous

My understanding is that hunting with ARs doesn't make a lot of sense, unless you suck at it and need to be able to get 10 rounds off quickly to be able to kill something.

DLOW

So you’re saying our politicians should stop taking money from private groups?

I know it's three months late, but take a peak at the homicide rate by firearms for each state. When sites do gun violence stats, they include suicides. Those are two completely different issues.

Yoo it's so fucked up that when the black dude is sporting his concealed carry fashion the claps are so weak and everbody else gets way stronger applause.
